The story

Voice actor Hiroaki Hirata appeared at a screening event for the dubbed version of director Christopher Nolan’s new film “The Odyssey,” pushing hard for the dub. The film, based on Homer’s epic and starring Matt Damon, sparked a flood of reactions on 5ch — some argued “the actor’s real voice is better,” others countered that “subtitles eat up all your focus just trying to read them.” While many felt comedies and sitcoms suit dubbing, plenty of others said original-language audio is better for performances that hinge on acting skill, splitting opinion down the middle between subtitle and dub camps.

Fair point, but voice actor dubbing is way too over-the-top. And it's so one-note that it doesn't matter who's doing it.
5AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:49
Comedies are definitely funnier dubbed.

Re: #5
The "Nagano Movie Channel" on BS-TBS mostly airs foreign films with subtitles, but Cannonball Run was the one exception they aired dubbed.

Re: #5
The Big Bang Theory is definitely better subtitled. Not that the dub is bad, but Sheldon's weirdness comes through better in the original performance.

Re: #5
Agreed. Even shows that aren't full-blown comedies but have a lighter tone work well dubbed — Columbo, for instance.
6AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:50
Jackie Chan is the one exception — that Ishimaru guy's dub voice feels more "real" than his actual one. (Hiroya Ishimaru is Jackie Chan's longtime Japanese dub voice actor)

Re: #6
Same goes for Schwarzenegger, right?

Re: #6
Same with T-Bag from Prison Break. Hearing his real voice with subtitles on just isn't intimidating at all — total buzzkill.
7AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:50
Before long, AI will be good enough to replace both voice actors and actors lol
14AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:52
Re: #7
With AI you could probably translate into other languages while keeping the actor's actual voice.

Re: #7
Nah, voice actors have idol-level popularity here, that's not happening. Maybe just for straight dubbing or narration work.
8AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:50
If you don't offer both subtitles and dubbing, you're leaving a lot of viewers behind.
9AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:51
Worst case, even with no subtitles available and not understanding the language, I'd still rather hear the actor's real voice.
10AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:52
Well of course voice actors push the dubbed version — it's the version that keeps them employed.
11AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:52
Uncharted is great dubbed, but I tried it with subtitles and the mumbly dialogue made it boring lol
13AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:52
Subtitle purists spend over 80% of their attention just reading the text — they've got no bandwidth left to actually take in the real voice, let alone the acting.
The normal move is to watch the dub first to get the dialogue and plot, then watch the original version.
Besides, Hirata, with the nuance you bring to your own dub performances, that's plenty for casual viewers.

Re: #13
Reading speed varies a lot by person, so someone who reads fast isn't using anywhere near 80% of their attention. Subtitles don't even have that many characters to begin with.
17AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:52
Jackie Chan's actual voice sounds fake — it just doesn't suit him.
18AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:52
You can't say that lol. It's like a traditional restaurant's proprietress saying "Western food is the best."
19AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:53
I've got low vision so I can't really read subtitles. Dubbed is my only option.
21AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:54
Muir Freya (from "The Old Man in the Backwoods Becomes a Holy Sword," voiced by Arisa Nakata):
"Old man, you really shouldn't say things like that."

The man himself, Beryl Gardenant (from "The Old Man in the Backwoods Becomes a Holy Sword," voiced by Hiroaki Hirata):
"Yeah, I know, but still……" (a joke playing on the fact that Hirata voices a character in that very anime)
23AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:54
Dubbed is easier to watch — with subtitles you end up just chasing the text.
24AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:54
Streaming dramas and movies absolutely need subtitles included, even alongside the dub.
26AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:55
Dr. Carter has to be voiced by Hirata.
62AnonymousSep 21, 2026 21:07
Re: #26
Yeah, I can't picture that character with any other voice at this point.
95AnonymousSep 21, 2026 21:21
Re: #26
Dr. Carter, Jack Sparrow, and Sanji all have to be him.
27AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:55
Matt Damon's usually voiced by Miki though~ (referring to Hirokazu Miki, Matt Damon's regular Japanese dub voice actor)
28AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:55
I want a dub for GTA. Don't care about anything else.
29AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:55
Same with YouTube — I end up just chasing the subtitles with my eyes. That's why auto-dub versions are an absolute lifesaver.
32AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:57
Re: #29
Watching fighting game streams, I love how even the on-screen characters' battle cries get auto-dubbed.

Top 3 movies/shows that are funnier dubbed:
Columbo
Jackie Chan movies
What's the third one?
111AnonymousSep 21, 2026 21:30
Re: #38
Taichiro Hirokawa in the Mr. Boo! films.
63AnonymousSep 21, 2026 21:08
Game of Thrones was better dubbed…

except for that "It's me, it's me, Border" bit. (a meme referencing one particularly awkward-sounding line from the Japanese dub)
70AnonymousSep 21, 2026 21:10
Re: #63
Honestly, you kind of feel bad for both the translator and the voice actor on that one…
68AnonymousSep 21, 2026 21:09
At home I go with dubbed — I just don't have the focus for subtitles.
85AnonymousSep 21, 2026 21:18
Re: #68
Dubbed with subtitles on, you mean.
110AnonymousSep 21, 2026 21:30
The annoying thing about dubs is when the voice actor changes depending on the broadcaster, or differs from the disc release — it just feels off the whole way through.
113AnonymousSep 21, 2026 21:31
Re: #110
Well, subtitles are the mainstream choice in practice, so it can't be helped.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The dub-versus-subtitles debate has long been a recurring topic in how Japanese audiences watch foreign films and dramas, and this time the spark was a voice actor himself publicly advocating for the dub in a public setting. On the thread, the dominant reasoning wasn’t a simple either-or stance but a genre-based split — “comedies suit dubbing,” “serious performances come through better in the original language.” Works like Jackie Chan’s films or Columbo are cases where the dubbed version actually became more beloved in Japan than the original ever was abroad, which can be seen as a product of Japan’s uniquely developed dubbing culture. At the same time, the spread of streaming services — which let viewers freely switch between subtitles and dubbing — has fueled more comments along the lines of “I watch both” or “I pick depending on the situation.” There was also some discussion of whether AI-generated voices might eventually replace voice actors’ work, though it’s worth noting this was purely viewer speculation about the future, not something Hirata himself actually said.
