Honogurashi no Niwa Passes 200,000 Units Sold in Japan — 5ch: ‘It’s Been Sitting Near the Top of the eShop Charts’

The story

Nippon Ichi Software’s farming-meets-horror simulation game “Honogurashi no Niwa” has surpassed 200,000 cumulative units sold in Japan roughly a month after launch, according to an announcement on the game’s official X (Twitter) account. Thread posters were divided over whether that figure leans more toward physical or digital sales, and whether PS5 or Switch/Switch2 is driving the numbers. With Famitsu’s weekly retail tracker showing a mere 1,186 physical units sold, some argued physical sales must be sluggish, while others pointed to the game’s strong reviews on the eShop and Steam as proof it’s still selling briskly.

“Honogurashi no Niwa” Tops 200,000 Units Sold in Japan

About a month after launch, thanks to everyone who picked up the game, we’ve surpassed 200,000 cumulative units sold in Japan.

The whole staff is truly grateful to everyone enjoying their days in Kanogatsu Village.

The PS5's digital download rate is 95%, so that basically means it's not selling at all on Switch.

Re: #4
Is escaping into fantasy on Geha (the console-war/hardware board) really that much fun for you?

Re: #4
PS5 physical copies are just under 10,000,
and Switch+Switch2 physical copies are 44,000,
so that would put Switch+Switch2 digital sales at negative 40,000. (Yeah, that math doesn't work.)

Re: #4
Huh? I checked the PS5 rankings and it's nothing but free-to-play games — where's this thing supposed to be?
10AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:58
Physical copies are sold out, so I guess digital alone stacked up 50,000 units on its own?
That's impressive
It has been sitting near the top of the eShop charts the whole time after all.

Re: #10
I'd bet over 70% of total sales are on Switch and Switch2.
11AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:01
How is this game at 200,000 while Chameleon is at 20 million?

Re: #11
Not much point comparing a ¥700 game and a ¥9,000 game on the same footing.
20AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:07
Since this is order/reservation numbers rather than shipment numbers, the Switch2 version — which is still seeing an ongoing physical stock shortage — is probably favored here.
Naturally, if physical stock is short, the digital download rate would also be higher for Switch2.
I'd guess that added 50,000 units is almost entirely the Switch2 version.

Re: #20
Even though this week's Famitsu numbers show only 1,186 units sold?
31AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:12
Steam reviews are absurdly high — I wonder how many copies it's actually sold there.

Re: #31
The Steam version is estimated at 12,000–32,000 units sold.

Even with the horror twist added, farming sims should naturally be able to hit numbers like this.
The fact that Nippon Ichi is the one pulling it off just shows how much Marvelous has been slacking.
38AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:13
Re: #32
Marvelous always dumps a crappy game on its users right when it matters most.
That's exactly why they're stuck as a mid-tier publisher forever.

Announcement: "Story of Seasons: Let's! Wind's Grand Bazaar" Surpasses 500,000 Units Shipped Worldwide
September 16, 2025

And yeah, Story of Seasons is actually selling several times more.

*Note: that's a future figure — they haven't even manufactured it yet, let alone shipped it.

Well, since it's releasing on both Switch2 and Switch, there's probably a fair amount of repeat physical purchases going on.

Re: #34
You doing okay reading Japanese?
It's just obviously the combined total of digital and physical shipment numbers hitting 200,000 🤔
48AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:20
This is thanks to the Nintendo Direct — the BGM during its reveal was great.
51AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:22
Re: #48
When it debuted at the Direct it got attention, but also got hit with "wait, not until next year?" comments.
Still, I think Nippon Ichi did a great job keeping the buzz alive all the way to launch.
54AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:25
Is this actually any good, though?
It's Nippon Ichi, so I can't really trust the content.
60AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:29
Re: #54
It's getting high praise across every platform and has even spawned devoted fans, so the quality must be solid.
57AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:26
Farming sims really do have high potential as a genre.
65AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:30
By the way, on the Nintendo Store's overall ranking, the Switch2 version sits at #6 and the Switch version at #11 — digital sales keep quietly climbing too.
I wonder if that overall ranking is sorted by revenue rather than unit count?

Re: #65
It used to be unit-based, but partway through last year it switched to a revenue basis.
75AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:35
They've put out a ton of bug fixes and still haven't finished patching everything.
Until that's done, DLC is probably out of the question.
77AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:38
Re: #75
That fix update actually dropped today.
78AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:38
I like the cozy/heartwarming genre, but I passed on this one because of the horror element.

Even someone like you can rest easy! (see for yourself)
85AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:45
Re: #80
Somehow that makes me feel cheated.
Honestly, makes me think it'd have been better not to touch it at all.
83AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:44
So from now on, Nippon Ichi is going to be known for Honogurashi instead of Disgaea? 🤔
107AnonymousSep 2, 2026 19:23
Re: #83
This should improve cash flow for the Yomawari dev team, so I've got high hopes for their next project.

Though they might blow it on some pointless venture and tank the company lol
92AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:48
I've only played the Honogurashi (dim-living/horror) mode — does the Anshin-gurashi (safe-living/cozy) mode stop partway through on story and character interactions?
98AnonymousSep 2, 2026 19:06
Re: #92
I've also only played the Honogurashi mode, but apparently:
the main story doesn't progress,
character stories cap out at level 3 so you never get to the deeper stuff,
there's no ominous floor in the mine,
there's no nighttime so skill training works differently,
and mysterious/yokai items are just bought outright.
That's how it apparently works.

Re: #1
Only a Japan-only version has been released, yet 70% of its Steam reviews are from overseas players.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Honogurashi no Niwa” is a farming-meets-horror simulation released by Nippon Ichi Software, and thread posters note that its development team includes people known for the “Yomawari” series. The “200,000 units” figure comes from an official social media announcement, and it’s not clear whether it combines physical and digital sales or how it breaks down by platform. Where the thread split was over how to interpret the gap between Famitsu’s low weekly retail figure (1,186 units) and the impression that the game is “still selling,” given its steady position near the top of the eShop charts and its strong Steam reviews. Some argued the low physical number reflects a shift to digital due to stock shortages, while others see it as simply sluggish physical retail sales — both remain speculation. It’s also worth noting, since it’s easy to overlook, that despite being a Japan-only release, 70% of its Steam reviews come from overseas users, showing its reputation is spreading abroad.
