Movie ‘Be-Bop High School’ Sparks Nostalgia for Showa-Era School Turf Wars — 5ch: ‘Delinquents Brawling in Arcades’

The story

A poster who had just watched the live-action film ‘Be-Bop High School’ for the first time asked 5ch whether school turf wars like that really happened back in the Showa era. The thread quickly filled with firsthand accounts from people who remembered the period — brawls in game arcades, students riding motorcycles down school hallways, and more. Discussion also touched on how corporal punishment by teachers was still permitted at the time, and why the original manga toned down its fight scenes in its later chapters. Posters couldn’t agree on which real school the series was supposedly modeled after, with several competing theories floating around.

Watched it 'cause I had nothing else to do

Weird how Be-Bop came out right at the peak of the bō sōzoku (biker gang) era, but no biker gangs show up in it at all

Re: #4
Maybe drawing motorcycles was just too much of a pain
7AnonymousOct 21, 2026 20:30
Heard this kind of thing really happened in Chiba

Re: #7
Wasn't the model school actually somewhere in Fukuoka City?
13AnonymousOct 21, 2026 20:33
It really happened. When I was in elementary school, delinquents were legitimately terrifying 😭
20AnonymousOct 21, 2026 20:36
Re: #13
Kids today probably can't even imagine delinquents brawling it out in an arcade
24AnonymousOct 21, 2026 20:37
Heard that 40 years ago at my old school, there was a guy who used to ride his motorcycle straight down the hallway
29AnonymousOct 21, 2026 20:39
Re: #24
Not inside the building itself, but they'd ride right into the schoolyard
33AnonymousOct 21, 2026 20:41
Re: #24 That's basically School Wars (another famous delinquent-teacher drama)
27AnonymousOct 21, 2026 20:39
Teachers back then must've had it rough — I doubt there was any kind of hazard pay for working at a rowdy school
31AnonymousOct 21, 2026 20:40
Re: #27
Then again, corporal punishment was still allowed back then, so
30AnonymousOct 21, 2026 20:40
There are 6 films in the series — is Part 2 really the best one?
34AnonymousOct 21, 2026 20:41
Re: #30 The theme song alone is legendary

Miho Nakayama is absurdly cute in this

Re: #32
Kyoko's great too, honestly
37AnonymousOct 21, 2026 20:42
Wasn't it kind of insane that Kikunaga played the role of Minoru?

Re: #37
The fat guy was Maeda, right?
39AnonymousOct 21, 2026 20:44
Anyway, the early OVA entries are legitimately scary
58AnonymousOct 21, 2026 20:52
Re: #39
Well yeah, those were real honest-to-god delinquents, not trained actors
56AnonymousOct 21, 2026 20:51
Be-Bop really doesn't have any motorcycles in it, does it
62AnonymousOct 21, 2026 20:53
Re: #56
It was an all-newcomer cast, so there was no budget for that
65AnonymousOct 21, 2026 20:57
Did everyone actually walk around puffing their chest out and swinging their arms wide like that?
75AnonymousOct 21, 2026 21:01
Re: #65
Everyone walked out of the theater doing exactly that. Everybody felt like a delinquent for a little while
70AnonymousOct 21, 2026 20:59
The model for Be-Bop is Fukuoka, right?
76AnonymousOct 21, 2026 21:02
Re: #70
Oh wait, my mistake — I was actually thinking of Rokudenashi Blues (a different delinquent manga)
73AnonymousOct 21, 2026 21:00
Talked to a 58-year-old guy the other day, and he said 90% of the photos in his old graduation yearbook had punch perms
82AnonymousOct 21, 2026 21:10
Re: #73
No way. Don't believe some old man's exaggerated war stories
88AnonymousOct 21, 2026 21:12
Multiple sightings of guys riding motorcycles down school hallways have also been confirmed in Saitama
92AnonymousOct 21, 2026 21:13
Re: #88
This is urban-legend territory, like that old story about a kid supposedly seeing 'Mickey' drown in a pond
96AnonymousOct 21, 2026 21:15
Re: #88
Happened at a junior high in Shiga in '92 too — a guy rode his moped right up to the shoe lockers and revved the engine during class.

The PE teacher who yelled at him for it had a bamboo sword on hand too, by the way
89AnonymousOct 21, 2026 21:12
The manga's story completely stalled out in the back half of its run while it was still serializing, so I stopped reading
93AnonymousOct 21, 2026 21:13
Re: #89
They just couldn't draw the fight scenes anymore — schools had gotten rowdier because of that manga's influence
101AnonymousOct 21, 2026 21:17
This is actually where I first learned the word 'shatei' (a gang's junior member/underling)
108AnonymousOct 21, 2026 21:19
Re: #101
'Shatei' originally just meant your actual younger blood brother
112AnonymousOct 21, 2026 21:22
Shonan Bakusozoku (Shonan Biker Gang) was the pioneer of mixing comedic spice into delinquent manga — pretty much everything that got popular afterward borrowed that same flavor
113AnonymousOct 21, 2026 21:23
Re: #112
Chameleon and Kyou kara Ore wa!! do that too, but the Crows-style ones don't really go for it much

Background and key points of this discussion

‘Be-Bop High School’ is a representative title among the manga and film series of the 1980s that depicted delinquent (tsuppari) culture. Around the same era, similar works like ‘Shonan Bakusozoku’ and ‘School Wars’ appeared one after another, and the late Showa period was also a time when school violence and juvenile delinquency were widely reported as social problems. The main point of disagreement in the thread was how much of this was true to life versus exaggerated for effect — eyewitness accounts of students riding motorcycles down hallways came in from multiple regions, while the claim that ‘90% of a graduation yearbook had punch perms’ was dismissed as an exaggeration. Some posts named specific schools as the supposed model for the series, but since these remain unsubstantiated rumors, references to specific schools or regions have been left out of this article. It’s also worth noting that these personal recollections vary from person to person and don’t necessarily reflect a uniform nationwide situation.
