GTA6 “The Smoothest 30fps of My Life” — Overseas Post Sparks Buzz

The story

A post about GTA6 gameplay footage by an overseas X (formerly Twitter) user — “If this is 30fps, it’s the smoothest 30fps of my life, it’s basically 50fps” — sparked a huge reaction. The post was picked up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“geha”) board, and the discussion spread in all directions: from suggestions that the poster “can’t tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps,” to amazement at how smoothly the characters’ hair moves, concerns over frame rate drops on the PS5 version, and console-war bickering over Switch 2 multiplatform titles being locked to 30fps. The thread also touched on reports that a high frame rate mode is being considered for the PS5 Pro.

True to its name, if this is 30fps, aren’t you guys overdoing it? This is the smoothest 30fps of my life. It’s basically at the level of 50fps.

This is getting as pseudoscientific as the audiophile crowd.

30fps is nothing but 30fps — what exactly are you seeing?

Re: #11
Audio stuff isn't pseudoscience unless you're geeking out over speaker cables lol

The definition of "going viral" (man-bazu, lit. "10k-buzz") has gotten confusing lately.
It used to mean over 10,000 retweets, I thought.

Re: #14
It originally comes from Mobile Suit Gundam Online anyway
a "bazooka" that deals 10,000-plus damage (the term is a pun combining "10,000" with "bazooka"/"buzz")

Re: #14
Ever since "mega hit" became a thing, digit counts stopped meaning anything.

> It's basically at the level of 50fps.

This line in particular makes no sense to me
It's amazing though — just coming up with that is wild

Re: #15
Doesn't this just mean he can't tell 30 from 60?

Re: #15
He's writing in French, so it might be because old CRT standards there ran at 50Hz (apparently a different standard from PAL)

Still, the smooth hair movement is genuinely impressive

Meanwhile Japanese games still have jagged, stiff hair even now
39AnonymousAug 29, 2026 07:21
Re: #19

Does it get interesting just because it sways in the wind?
43AnonymousAug 29, 2026 07:24
Re: #19
It's impressive, but wavy hair doesn't really move like that, does it
this motion looks more like someone with straightened or naturally silky straight hair
20AnonymousAug 29, 2026 06:59
There's barely any footage of actual extended gameplay to begin with
it's all walking cutscenes — I thought I was watching Hitman
23AnonymousAug 29, 2026 07:05
Re: #20
Exactly this
makes me genuinely worried whether it's really coming out this year
62AnonymousAug 29, 2026 07:56
Variable frame rate suddenly turning choppy kills the vibe, so a locked 30fps should be fine.

Re: #62
No good, it'll wreck your eyes
65AnonymousAug 29, 2026 08:00
Re: #62
At least on the base PS5 it sounds like it's 1440p with a variable 30fps lol
66AnonymousAug 29, 2026 08:03
I genuinely can't follow the logic here
what happens if a PC version comes out running at 60fps?
68AnonymousAug 29, 2026 08:05
Re: #66
He's saying he'll switch over once the PC version comes out, so he's satisfied for now
67AnonymousAug 29, 2026 08:05
We're probably heading into an era where mid-range PCs weaker than the PS6 cost hundreds of thousands of yen (several thousand dollars), so that scenario probably won't happen.
69AnonymousAug 29, 2026 08:08
Re: #67
Well, nobody even knows how powerful the PS6 will be yet
130AnonymousAug 29, 2026 08:58
Graphics this mediocre and it's only just hitting 30fps…
133AnonymousAug 29, 2026 09:01
Re: #130
Well, at 1440p it's probably going to look blurry anyway
152AnonymousAug 29, 2026 09:22
This has been fueled by big third-party titles coming out on Switch 2 one after another at 30fps
people desperately pushed the "anything under 60fps is unacceptable" line to deny the point of Switch 2 multiplatform releases
but now it's boomeranged right back on them
155AnonymousAug 29, 2026 09:26
Re: #152
It's Switch 2, yet it still comes out a generation late running at 30fps — that's the crappy part
also, did Switch users even actually want to play things like Cyberpunk or Elden Ring in the first place? That's where I doubted the point of those ports
though I have no idea how well they actually sold
158AnonymousAug 29, 2026 09:28
Re: #155
If you just say "did they even want to play it?" and do nothing, the market never grows
165AnonymousAug 29, 2026 09:32
Re: #155
Looking on X, there are plenty of reports of people who already played it elsewhere buying the Switch 2 version and enjoying it

The PS5 Pro's frame rate hasn't been fully locked to 30fps yet — that will be announced later

The base PS5 runs a smooth 30fps, but details on a performance mode haven't been revealed yet
regarding enhanced support for the PS5 Pro, Rockstar has confirmed it will talk about FPS modes and PS5 Pro enhancements at a later date

GTA6 High Frame Rate Mode

Digital Foundry: GTA 6: "Maybe the most impressive showcase we've ever seen"
– The technology is off the charts
– No severe frame rate drops — only extremely rare single-frame dips
– Captured on base PS5 — looks even better on PS5 Pro
– A high frame rate mode is under consideration for a post-launch update

Since it's not being sold on disc, there's said to be about three months left to carefully consider and implement it

This is a game
go watch a movie if that's what you want
219AnonymousAug 29, 2026 11:00
Re: #212
Movies run at 23.976fps though

Re: #212
Reminds me of PlayStation fanboys who used to say 24fps is enough for games too, since movies run at 24

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Even before launch, information had circulated through near-official channels (a Digital Foundry preview article) that GTA6 would run at a base 30fps on PS5, with an enhanced mode under consideration for PS5 Pro — and the “high frame rate mode being considered for a post-launch update” mentioned later in the thread fits that same context. Frame rate debates tend to get heated because the raw fps number and the perceived smoothness (how even the frame times are) are two different things, so the impression that “it’s 30fps but looks smooth” isn’t technically a contradiction. At the same time, the thread also drifts into the etymology of the term “10k-buzz” (man-bazu, said to originate from Mobile Suit Gundam Online) and into how Switch 2 multiplatform titles running at 30fps gets recycled as ammunition in the PlayStation-vs-Switch console war. It’s worth keeping in mind that this has more to do with 5ch’s characteristic console-war (“geha”) undercurrent than with the GTA6 topic itself, and runs on a separate track from what the original poster’s tweet was actually about.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “geha”) thread “Foreigner: “GTA6’s 30fps is the smoothest 30fps of my life. Basically 50fps level” → Goes viral“.
