DQ6 Strategy Guide’s Paladin Gear Has 5ch Asking, ‘Do These Guys Have a Grudge Against Paladins or Something?’

From our other sites

The story

A post reminiscing about the strategy guide for “Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation” became a hot topic on 5ch’s Nanademo Jikkyo G (anything-goes live-commentary) board. Posters got fired up swapping memories about the guide and the game itself — questioning why the Paladin’s equipment was a bamboo spear and a loincloth, debating the merits of role-playing Hassan (a bruiser-type character) as the faith-based Paladin class, and reliving just how terrifying the Death Staff enemy was. Opinion was split on whether the guide “hid” the job class requirements on purpose or simply never figured them out.

How did a strategy guide get away with hiding the one piece of info that actually mattered?
59AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:22
Re: #10
They're not hiding it, they just didn't know 😤
114AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:50
Re: #10
It's not that they were allowed to hide it — more like they weren't allowed to publish it, I bet
13AnonymousOct 6, 2026 22:39
Isn't it weird that the Paladin's weapon is a bamboo spear?
19AnonymousOct 6, 2026 22:43
Re: #13
You can shoot down a B-29 with that, can't you? (a dark joke referencing WWII-era propaganda about using bamboo spears against American bombers)
15AnonymousOct 6, 2026 22:40
You'd stubbornly refuse to ever make Terry a Martial Artist, right?
57AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:21
Re: #15
Terry as a Battle Master is basically résumé fraud
16AnonymousOct 6, 2026 22:40
The real way to use a strategy guide back then was just looking at the illustrations to get hyped up
17AnonymousOct 6, 2026 22:42
Re: #16
Hyped up (racy underwear) (angel leotard) (bunny suit)
55AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:19
Re: #16
True,
they'd sneak in surprisingly detailed lore about the towns and dungeons here and there, it was fun
24AnonymousOct 6, 2026 22:49
Doesn't staring at this hairstyle make you uneasy?
33AnonymousOct 6, 2026 22:57
Re: #24
Tact's hairstyle is even more unsettling
46AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:12
Re: #24
For a second I saw the DQ11 hero in there
52AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:16
Re: #24
Onion from hell
25AnonymousOct 6, 2026 22:50
But everyone made the hero a Magic Warrior anyway, right?
27AnonymousOct 6, 2026 22:51
Re: #25
Feels like the class closest to Hero
28AnonymousOct 6, 2026 22:53
Re: #25
Yeah I did lol
It's the biggest detour of a route though
32AnonymousOct 6, 2026 22:57
Wasn't that info just shown plainly in-game?
37AnonymousOct 6, 2026 22:59
Re: #32
Wasn't there a trap where Ranger wasn't listed or something?
34AnonymousOct 6, 2026 22:57
I'm not a fan of people who make Hassan a Paladin.
Can you really come up with a convincing role-play reason for how Hassan suddenly found religious faith?
Just make him a Battle Master like normal.
36AnonymousOct 6, 2026 22:59
Re: #34
It's muscle worship
40AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:06
Magic Warrior, the most useless class there is
44AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:08
Re: #40
Not many people can actually name the elements of Blaze Slash and Lightning Slash
51AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:16
Re: #40
It's the only one that learns Kafrizzle though
Slap an Echo Hat on it and it'll reliably one-shot an enemy every turn
50AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:15
Everyone bought the Enix strategy guides, right?
The books probably made almost as much money as the games did
54AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:17
Re: #50
My game time was limited, so the rest of the time I just kept reading the strategy guide
66AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:26
It's right there in the book, see

Enix: "The Paladin's gear is a loincloth and a bamboo spear."
Square: "The Paladin is a slaughterer of Dark Knights who poses as a hero while stealing his best friend's girlfriend."

Do these two companies have some kind of grudge against Paladins?
85AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:34
Re: #83
Don't just pull a jump and vanish on us (a jab at Kain the Dragoon from Final Fantasy IV, who keeps abandoning the party mid-battle using his Jump ability)
90AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:36
Re: #83
That… Dragoon guy?
97AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:41
Death Staff really is the #1 monster when it comes to childhood trauma
100AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:42
Re: #97
They all breathe Icy Blizzard at once and wipe your whole party
109AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:47
Re: #97
I hate these guys too
They're so thin that a ton of them show up at once
101AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:42
I owned this guide — used to copy the equipment illustrations and draw them myself
107AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:46
Re: #101
Love how Hassan's steel nipples poke through even the thickest armor
112AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:50
Re: #107
Now that I think about it, if the armor fits Hassan perfectly it'd be way too baggy on everyone else, so you couldn't actually hand it down
Is it like a Saiyan battle suit that stretches to fit?
108AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:46
There's that Hero-to-Superstar-back-to-Hero route, but
doesn't that leave the hero permanently underpowered?
111AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:49
Re: #108
For support there's the Dancer's Dazzle Dance, and for offense there's Moonsault, so it's probably still better than Ranger
115AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:51
Re: #108
It's basically just a shortcut to becoming Hero faster

Background and talking points

The reason strategy guides didn’t cover every job class requirement comes down to how they were made back then: writers worked on a tight turnaround timed to the game’s release, so guides could only include information locked in before the game’s specs were finalized. The thread was split on whether this counted as the guide “hiding” information or simply “not knowing” it, but either way it’s a telling anecdote about the limits of strategy guides in that era. It’s also worth noting that the frustration over the Paladin’s bamboo spear and loincloth outfit stems from a contrast with the heavily armored knight image the Paladin class carries in Square’s (now Square Enix’s) Final Fantasy series. A common point of confusion for readers: the equipment and character designs are specs set by the game itself (Enix), not something the strategy guide invented on its own.
