Chunichi’s Next Manager: 5ch Reacts to Reports That Koichi Ogata Is the Frontrunner

The story

On 5ch’s “Anything Live Broadcast G” board, discussion was heating up over who might manage the Chunichi Dragons next season. Posters reacted with surprise to reports that Koichi Ogata was the frontrunner for the job, while big names like former players Kimiyasu Kudo and Masumi Kuwata also had their names floated — though many questioned how realistic it was for someone to take over a team they’d had no ties to as a player. Comments attributed to former catcher Takeshi Nakamura were also quoted, as posters weighed the chances of other names in the mix, including Hatsuhiko Tsuji and Hirokazu Ibata.

Apparently it's a done deal with Ogata lol — what a surprise
44AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:17
Re: #5
If this actually happens, an Ogata vs. Arai last-place battle would be hilarious to watch
9AnonymousOct 4, 2026 18:58
Guys like Kudo won't do it — he doesn't want to tarnish his legacy lol
12AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:01
Re: #9
By that logic, none of the big names would ever take the job
19AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:04
Manager Kuwata with Fukudome and Miyamoto as coaches would be popular enough
GM Tatsunami can handle Nagoya's political and business circles
63AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:25
Re: #19
Miyamoto isn't really popular though
20AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:05
I don't want to see Araki get bashed if he becomes manager and loses
21AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:06
Re: #20
That's the tough part when a player you loved becomes manager — you have to watch them get hated on
31AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:13
Does Kudo really need to go tarnish his reputation?
Maybe for Samurai Japan, but not for a team like Chunichi
34AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:14
Re: #31
He did come manage DeNA though…
73AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:31
Re: #31
Kudo's already said he'd take a manager job if offered one — he's not really the type to worry about his reputation
43AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:16
It's a total mystery why Kudo and Kuwata are even on the list
48AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:18
Re: #43
Kudo went to Meiden (Nagoya Denki, a well-known Nagoya-area high school)
51AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:20
Re: #48
Does just being from the area mean he'd actually join a team he had no ties to as a player?
52AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:20
Re: #48
That connection feels way too thin
46AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:17
Forget Kudo and Kuwata, where did Tsuji even come from?
47AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:18
Re: #46
He was a Chunichi coach at one point, remember?
49AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:18
Re: #46
He's coached at Chunichi before and has a managerial track record — honestly it makes more sense for his name to come up than Kuwata's or Kudo's
53AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:21
What about Manager Kuwata with Tatsunami as head coach?
57AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:21
Re: #53
Tatsunami doesn't seem like he'd want that
89AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:41
Re: #79
Most people only picture Occhi (nickname for Hiromitsu Ochiai) at Chunichi or the Giants
95AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:44
Re: #89
Wasn't he at Nippon-Ham too?
98AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:44
Re: #95
He was briefly at Lotte and Nippon-Ham too, near the end of his career
105AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:46
Re: #95
Some people don't even know Occhi was ever at Nippon-Ham — that image just never stuck
90AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:41
I remember Hisashi Yamada, formerly of the Hankyu Braves, managing the Dragons — was he from Nagoya?
97AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:44
Re: #90
He's from Akita
I think he went straight from being a Chunichi coach to manager
99AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:45
Re: #90
Yeah, from Akita — he'd been a coach the year before. He only took the job because Hoshino said he'd back him up, and then Hoshino turned around and poached Shimano too on his way to the Tigers. That's a rough story
102AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:45
For some reason online a lot of people trash Abe and praise Kuwata, so I'd like to see Kuwata actually get a shot once
Personally I think Kuwata's pretty old-school (Showa-era mentality) too though
104AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:46
Re: #102
No idea about his baseball philosophy, but at least he doesn't seem like the power-harassment type
107AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:47
Re: #102
You'll end up dreaming of a Furuta- or Tanishige-style manager
106AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:47
By the way, according to Takeshi Nakamura:

Shima — not impossible
Araki — not right now
Ibata — not next year
Tsujimoto — apparently he keeps turning it down himself, so no
Kudo — no
Kuwata — can't say anything careless about this one
112AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:49
Re: #106
Lol what is this
Basically already answered
132AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:56
Re: #106
So Kuwata, huh
Masa also said something like — since he hasn't heard of anyone from the Chubu region being approached for a coaching job, the manager's probably going to be someone from Kanto or Kansai
115AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:51
Kuwata: "You don't need 150 km/h — just be able to throw to the low-outside corner whenever you want. Rather than exit velocity, focus on the skill to aim for where the fielders aren't"

Is that really okay…?
118AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:52
Re: #115
People with great skill can't understand people without it
123AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:54
Re: #115
Training someone's control to be like Uehara's or Kuwata's is way less reproducible than just training a wild pitcher to throw 155 km/h — that's dozens of times more consistent as training…
124AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:54
Everyone's analyzing this seriously, but isn't what Chunichi's front office actually wants right now a manager who can draw fans, not necessarily one who can build a strong team?
128AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:55
Re: #124
Yeah, that's true
In that case, maybe someone like Ibata?
129AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:55
Re: #124
Then it'd just be Tatsunami
131AnonymousOct 4, 2026 19:56
Re: #124
Which manager would actually drive fans away?
Someone with yakuza ties or something?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Speculation about the Chunichi Dragons’ next manager is an annual post-season topic, but this time the fresh angle is the report that Koichi Ogata is the frontrunner. Ogata previously managed the Hiroshima Carp, so a move to Chunichi is seen as a surprising choice even within the organization. Big names like Kimiyasu Kudo and Masumi Kuwata also had their names floated, though many think it’s unlikely someone would take over a team they had no connection to as a player. Within the thread, the debate centered on whether the priority should be “a manager who can build a strong team” versus “a manager who can draw fans,” with Kazuyoshi Tatsunami and Hirokazu Ibata’s names coming up in the latter context. Comments attributed to former Chunichi catcher Takeshi Nakamura are also quoted, but readers should note that the source and timing can’t be confirmed from the text itself — it’s circulating on 5ch strictly as secondhand information.
