Wolverine’s Graphics Get Compared to Ocarina of Time, Sparking Buzz Overseas — 5ch: “Getting Owned by 20-Year-Old Graphics”

The story

A post comparing screenshots of the new action game “Marvel’s Wolverine” with 1998’s “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” and the GameCube version of “Super Mario Sunshine” went viral overseas and sparked discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. Commenters pointed out rough water and lava effects, tree rendering, and character facial animation, and many voiced suspicions about internal changes at developer Insomniac Games as well as doubts about its review scores. The discussion expanded to include Nintendo’s long-standing dedication to water rendering and even practices involving consulting firms in the Western game industry.

Don't compare a current-gen game to a PS2-era game.

Re: #6
It's also being compared to the GameCube's Sunshine, you know Re: #1

Is that a goblin on the right?
Way too lame-looking.

Re: #11
Same here…
It's impressive how there's zero effort to make Wolverine look cool.
13AnonymousSep 17, 2026 10:17
Zelda's always been known for its water effects, huh.

Re: #13
It's not just Zelda — when it comes to water effects, it's Nintendo as a whole, Mario included.

[Total Bummer] Flat, paper-thin 2D trees discovered in the world of Wolverine

Fresh material
There are paper-thin 2D trees too!

Re: #36
Forget the paper-thin trees — what's going on with that asphalt….
37AnonymousSep 17, 2026 10:25
Most of that money probably went to employee salaries.
38AnonymousSep 17, 2026 10:25
Wait, Sweet Baby doesn't get paid for pushing political correctness — they're the ones paying?
Seriously makes no sense.
41AnonymousSep 17, 2026 10:26
Re: #38
They pay money in order to get the PC treatment.
Just thought that sounds insane, didn't you?
Yeah, it is insane.
39AnonymousSep 17, 2026 10:25
If it were just Wolverine turning out to be trash, fine, but Concord, Saros, Marathon — it's flop after flop. What's going on with Sony?
40AnonymousSep 17, 2026 10:26
Re: #39
And don't forget their "fighting spirit" either (sarcastic dig implying Sony's effort has flopped too).
43AnonymousSep 17, 2026 10:29
A Metascore of 77 for this is way too generous.
It's getting a 20-30 point boost it doesn't deserve.
44AnonymousSep 17, 2026 10:30
Re: #43
Without the "Sony bonus points," this would be more like a 30.
46AnonymousSep 17, 2026 10:33
Where's all that money even going…
59AnonymousSep 17, 2026 10:40
Re: #46
Straight into Sweet Baby's pockets.
52AnonymousSep 17, 2026 10:37
It took 20 years for Nintendo's graphics to come back as a stick to beat people with (counting from the Wii's launch).
60AnonymousSep 17, 2026 10:40
Re: #52
You're so salty you can't even see straight anymore, huh lol
63AnonymousSep 17, 2026 10:41
Re: #52
Lol, at least he knows he's the one getting dunked on.
72AnonymousSep 17, 2026 10:46
Re: #52
Yeah, I never expected it'd take 20 years just to end up getting trolled with graphics from a 20-year-old game.
79AnonymousSep 17, 2026 10:50
Why on earth would Insomniac make such a low-quality game?
91AnonymousSep 17, 2026 11:04
Re: #79
Re: #82
The team members have probably been swapped out.

Look at the Bungie acquisition — once a studio gets tied up with PlayStation,
it apparently takes tens of millions of yen in retention bonuses just to keep staff from leaving.
82AnonymousSep 17, 2026 10:55
There's no way this happens if Insomniac is working under its normal setup.
Something's seriously wrong internally.
Did they have layoffs recently or something?
83AnonymousSep 17, 2026 10:56
No one else is pointing this out so maybe I'm just being overly picky, but
Link's face when he picks up an item creeps me out.
He's doing a joyful pose but his face is completely blank, no emotion at all.
Does nobody at Nintendo find that weird?
89AnonymousSep 17, 2026 11:03
Re: #83
Isn't that a homage to the original games?
90AnonymousSep 17, 2026 11:03
Re: #83
Have you never actually played Zelda ("エアプ" = talking like you've played when you haven't)? Link mastered a whole range of situational facial expressions ages ago.
92AnonymousSep 17, 2026 11:06
That's way too much regression in 10 years.
Did they forget how to make water?
98AnonymousSep 17, 2026 11:12
Re: #92
Even The Last of Us let you see the bottom in shallow water.
Wolverine… come on.
94AnonymousSep 17, 2026 11:08
And get this, the water splashes literally clip straight through the body lol🤣🌱bwaaaaaaaahahahahaha

Splashes floating in midair like a sloppy photoshop job😂fwaaaaaaaaーーーーーーーwwwwwwwwww

Re: #94
In Dragon's Dogma on PS3, your character actually got soaked when you stepped into a river or whatever — doesn't this game have anything like that?
101AnonymousSep 17, 2026 11:18
Re: #94
Same with the lava steam — the particle effects are used so weirdly it's hard to even tell what's supposed to be happening.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Nintendo titles, particularly the “Legend of Zelda” series, have long been praised for their water and lava effects, and that track record was cited repeatedly in this comparison. Meanwhile, “Sweet Baby Inc.,” the name that came up in the thread, is a consulting firm that advises on diversity representation in the Western game industry and has been a polarizing topic among Western gamers since around 2024; posters in this thread also voiced suspicions about its involvement. That said, claims about internal changes or layoffs at developer Insomniac Games remain speculation within the thread and are not confirmed facts. It’s also worth noting that 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board tends to produce skewed takes on specific manufacturers, and impressions can shift depending on how comparison images are cropped or under what conditions they were captured.
