Torneko’s Great Adventure Remaster Gets a Day-One-Ish Patch — Fans Ask Why It Wasn’t Fixed Before Launch

The story

On September 16, Square Enix released an update for the Steam version of Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon – A Slightly Nice Remaster. Other platforms will get the update as they become ready. On a 5ch hardware/industry (“geha”) board thread, many users asked why the fixes couldn’t have been made before release, given how soon after launch they arrived, while others noted that console versions face a certification process that delays updates, and the conversation also touched on comparisons with Shiren the Wanderer 6, which launched around the same time.

If it's something fixable in about a week, how do you not catch it and fix it before shipping the product?
8AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:56
Re: #2
Obviously because the people who made it have zero interest in the actual content.

Re: #2
Thanks to the paying customers doing the debugging for free, that's how.

Re: #2
Guess this just proves humans still beat AI in this particular field.
3AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:51
What's so 'godly' about it? They should've had this done from the start.
4AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:52
If anything, this is exactly the kind of thing you're supposed to nail before launch…
5AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:52
Charging the same price as Shiren 6? What a total rip-off.
6AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:53
Guy probably never even played it (lit. "air-play," i.e., faking it) lol
Guess the plan is to let the paying customers handle QA.
7AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:54
What about everything besides Steam?
9AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:56
Re: #7
Console versions lag behind because they have to go through the hardware maker's certification process.
79AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:25
Re: #9
There was that whole incident where an update got pushed through without review and ended up shipping with a virus, and it became a huge problem…
And they're still doing no-review updates? (´・ω・`)

What about the attack-miss bug, or the freeze during level-ups?
12AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:57
This! This is exactly it, Square Enix! I can already picture the YouTubers doing a total 180 and praising it now 🤭

Re: #8
They say Romancing SaGa gets such high praise because almost the entire staff are hardcore Romancing SaGa fans themselves.

Re: #17
Yeah, even watching the livestreams you can tell the devs genuinely love the original.
28AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:02
Did they actually fix the level-up freeze?
31AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:04
Re: #28
Nope, not yet.
36AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:06
Thanks to this mess, I ended up buying Shiren 6 instead and I'm having a blast, so honestly, I'm grateful.
51AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:11
Re: #36
It's wild you hadn't picked up something that fun until now.
71AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:22
Re: #36
Mystery Dungeon-style games really are great, aren't they.
43AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:08
Should've done this before release — what's even the point of a remake otherwise?
47AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:10
Is making customers do the debugging some kind of trend now? Also, does that actually save them any money? Getting called out for cutting corners seems like it'd just cost them more in the long run, honestly.
82AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:28
Re: #47
It means the staff get to clock out on time, that's why.
54AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:14
Re: #51
Because Torneko being so rough made people re-appreciate how polished Shiren is.
58AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:17
Re: #54
Kind of sad if you can only appreciate something's appeal by comparing it to something else.
56AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:16
Did they actually fix the diagonal input?
I'm still hitting spots where pressing diagonal doesn't move me diagonally. Has the update just not reached me yet?
59AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:17
Re: #56
Right now it's Steam-only.
60AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:17
Re: #56
From what I've seen in streams it does look improved.
But so far only the Steam version has actually gotten the update.
63AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:18
Huh, it's the latest version.
Wait, don't tell me it's Steam-only and the Switch version got pushed to the back of the line?

Seriously, that's enough to make you lose it, right? Hey.
70AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:21
Re: #63
Not just this game — Switch versions always get their updates late.
74AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:24
Re: #63
What is this guy even talking about.

Well, from a player's point of view,
no matter how much better a game becomes through updates,
if a player quits at the very start,
that's the end of it for them.
So really, having it in the best shape possible
right from the beginning
is always going to be better.

Re: #64
This kind of remake mostly sells to tamed diehard fans anyway, so it's not really an issue.
84AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:30
We're supposed to be comparing it to Torneko and everyone's back on Shiren again (´・ω・`)
86AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:30
Re: #84
My bad.
96AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:40
Why couldn't they get this right from the start?
There's no way they wouldn't have noticed it during testing.
98AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:41
Re: #96
If they'd had an AI handle it, this might've slipped through, since it's not a progression-blocking bug.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Steam version can receive patches from the developer at any time, but console versions have to clear each hardware maker’s certification process, which typically delays rollout anywhere from a few days to a few weeks — that structural difference is why thread posters singled the update out as “Steam-only” or said the “Switch version got pushed to the back of the line.” The exchanges in the thread suggest this update mainly improves diagonal-input responsiveness, while other issues — like the control freeze during level-ups — remain unfixed. The conversation later drifted toward comparisons with Shiren 6, likely because that similarly-themed title, released around the same time, offered a natural benchmark for polish; it’s worth noting that comments about pricing and quality reflect individual opinions rather than any official comparative data. Likewise, the recurring question of “why couldn’t this have been fixed before release” mostly comes from speculation by people without direct insight into the actual development and QA process, and no definitive conclusion was reached in the thread.
