GTA6 Slips to No. 29 on US Amazon Preorder Charts — Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake Takes No. 1

The story

A post on 5ch’s hardware industry board (Gehazoku) sparked discussion after noting that GTA6 had slipped to No. 29 on US Amazon’s preorder chart, while the remake of *The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time* claimed the top spot. GTA6 had previously announced changes to how it handles its packaged (disc) edition ahead of launch, and many in the thread pointed to that as a likely factor behind its weak ranking. At the same time, some argued that “Western users actually want physical media more than people assume,” which clashed with the common image of overseas markets as digital-download-first. Since GTA6 also carries high expectations for its PC version, opinions were split on whether the ranking alone can capture its true popularity.

The disc discontinuation is clearly hurting them big time…
why'd they announce killing the disc version before GTA even launched…
7AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:27
Looking at the replies to that post, wait — do Western gamers actually prefer physical discs?? I thought it'd be the other way around.
8AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:27
Surprising… still, Zelda's popularity with overseas kids is something else.
15AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:30
I get that the original Ocarina of Time was a classic back in the day, but I don't get why this remake is getting this much hype and attention.
Didn't think it'd sell this well.

Re: #15
Zelda's profile in Japan changed dramatically after Breath of the Wild.
This Ocarina of Time remake is aimed at that newer crowd, so it looks like the strategy paid off.
And overseas, well, that goes without saying.
16AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:32
When it comes down to choosing between 30fps and 60fps though……
17AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:33
An unfinished GTA6 can wait, so of course people are buying Ocarina of Time instead.
18AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:34
It's less that Ocarina of Time is selling well and more that GTA6 just isn't…

Well, like with GTA5, they'll probably pad the numbers later with a free giveaway lol

Re: #18
That's the "Dirt Uncle" guy (an obscure 5ch in-joke nickname).
21AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:36
Up until recently, tons of Americans were insisting GTA6 had to be a masterpiece even with zero info out…
guess seeing the trailer made them lose hope instead.
22AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:36
Who's buying a box with nothing but a download code in it?
Digital download, that's the way.
24AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:37
Nobody's buying a package that's just got a piece of paper in it.
27AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:38
This is what happens when people go around trolling that "30fps will blind you."
28AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:38
Pretty shocking how much the GTA6 defense squad has thinned out.
People are being more even-handed about it than I expected.
29AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:39
It's obvious the momentum died the moment they killed the disc version.
30AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:39
Both Zelda and Fire Emblem are way more popular than they used to be. Probably thanks to hits like Breath of the Wild and Three Houses (´・ω・`)
Nintendo knew this, which is why they're counting on it for the year-end sales battle.
31AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:39
It's just a crappy game where you drive around running from cops anyway.
33AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:40
Destined to sink right along with PlayStation 😭
40AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:42
Realistically even GTA fans probably don't want to play the gimped "PlayStation" version on PS5 (a snarky pun on "degraded" + "PlayStation").

The more hardcore the fan, the more likely they're holding out for the PC online version (´・ω・`)

Re: #40
Yeah, fair point
It's not really the kind of game you need to rush to play anyway.
43AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:44
Normally you'd just play both Ocarina of Time and GTA6, right?
I mean, this is the console-war board after all.
48AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:45
Re: #43
Normally Ocarina of Time would take priority
GTA6's a wait-for-PC situation.
101AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:58
Re: #43
Like console-war posters actually play games!
Nobody here's playing either one.
61AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:49
Well yeah, hardly anyone's buying a box that just has paper in it.
65AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:50
Re: #61
And that flimsy piece of paper is PlayStation's last hope 😭
64AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:49
Wait, this is about US Amazon?
I thought it was Japan — well, it'd probably look similar there too
This isn't so much Ocarina of Time being high as it is GTA being low, huh?
67AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:50
Re: #64
Japan doesn't even get a packaged version.
71AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:51
Does stuff like this actually happen? ( ゚Д゚)
87AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:54
Re: #71
No, in a way it's only natural
Even in an overseas-only matchup, comparing PS5 versions of Zelda and GTA6, Zelda wins hands down

Most of GTA's sales are on PC anyway.
72AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:51
HD-2D games keep pulling off hit after hit in the 3-million-unit class,
and they're faster and cheaper to make too

Sony's so obsessed with high-end graphics games that they're missing where the industry's actually headed.
77AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:52
Re: #72
I heard GTA6's preorders are already something like 5 million, which is nuts.
73AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:51
Re: #69
For real?
Guess I should preorder soon then?
76AnonymousSep 13, 2026 13:52
Re: #73
You can't even buy it through official channels anymore.

Background and Key Points

US Amazon’s best-seller and preorder rankings are tallied before launch, so they don’t necessarily reflect actual sales figures or real-world popularity. GTA6 had already signaled plans to scale back its disc edition ahead of release, which may have hurt its standing given how persistent physical-media demand still is in the North American market. Rockstar titles have also traditionally seen strong demand on PC, meaning console-only rankings don’t fully capture real-world performance. Meanwhile, the *Legend of Zelda* series has seen a major surge in overseas support since *Breath of the Wild*, so it’s not especially surprising that a remake would rank highly too. In the thread, many found it “surprising” that overseas users lean toward physical media, but this may say more about the specifics of this particular ranking than about any broader market trend.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry board, Gehazoku) thread “[Bad news for Sony fans] Overseas gamer: “GTA6 ranked 29th on the overseas Amazon charts lol, Ocarina of Time is #1 lol”.”
