The story
Xbox Cloud Gaming has introduced a new 15-hour monthly cap on cloud play — a perk Game Pass Ultimate members had previously been able to use with essentially no limit. Microsoft points to the difficulty of scaling up server capacity as the reason, and going over the cap now means paying extra. The original article was briefly pulled before being republished with an added explanation of the new pay-as-you-go option, and on 5ch that back-and-forth fueled both “isn’t this basically a retreat” takes and comparisons to PlayStation’s cloud service.
Xbox Game Pass caps Ultimate cloud-play time at 15 hours a month
Game Pass Cloud Gaming, previously usable with no time limit at all, now comes with a usage cap because scaling up server capacity is difficult

What people said
Microsoft: "Games, thirty minutes a day."
At this rate you'd be better off just playing mobile gacha games
Sounds like they just don't want to keep investing in infrastructure
Same as with AI — they can't recoup the losses, so they're throttling it to keep it on life support
before eventually pulling the plug entirely
and now suddenly it's 15… that's rough
Because the Xbox division isn't turning a profit
while PlayStation's is
15 hours is barely enough for a trial run of a game…
Going over 15 hours now requires an extra fee
https://www.theverge.com/news/989211/microsoft-xbox-cloud-gaming-pay-as-you-go-option
Microsoft has introduced a monthly time cap, limiting Ultimate subscribers to 15 hours a month.
As a result, many Game Pass subscribers may end up having to pay for hourly bundles,
or simply cut back on how much they use cloud gaming.
Sounds like it'd be cheaper to just go to an arcade
If it's true, that's just ridiculous
Because I can't defend this one
The official blog's got the same thing posted

I played Persona 3 on the cloud for like 100 yen.
It even ran on my PC with no graphics card, so I figured I'd play Persona 6 on Game Pass too,
but now that's off the table
If Persona 6 turns out to be a 100-hour epic like 5 was, that'd take over half a year at this rate
and not a single tweet is mentioning it.
Does that even happen?
Even searching "cloud" just brings up stuff about Final Fantasy
It's just not turning up in search — three or four people are actually talking about it
PS Portal seems to be selling pretty well,
so PlayStation's cloud service seems more likely to stick around
Microsoft's old "This is an Xbox" slogan (everything is an Xbox) is officially dead now
Turns out you did need actual hardware after all
Yeah, I do that a lot too — downloading's a hassle so I'll just try it on cloud for a bit first
That's gone the moment you play 1 or 2 indie games.
If you actually want to play them properly, it's nowhere near enough
It's 15 hours a MONTH, not a day.
That defense doesn't hold up, genius
Guess Asha (5ch shorthand for Microsoft/Xbox) has decided selling hardware matters more after all.
They already went digital-only on discs, so hopefully hardware price cuts are next
Even the gutless Series S costs 100,000 yen — who's actually buying that?
Sure, you don't need anything on your end, but they still need hardware to run the game on their end plus high-speed lines — there's no way that turns a profit
Keeping all that running 24/7 must be brutal on the costs
PlayStation's doing reasonably well with it though.
Isn't it just that Xbox and Game Pass aren't popular?
Right, that's why I'm saying it'd be nice if they cut the price too
SK Hynix: "Demand won't loosen up until 2030. Even if inventory builds, prices won't come down."
Chip prices are never getting cheaper again, so just give it up already
Glad I picked up my Series X for around 50,000 yen
Background and key debates
Xbox Cloud Gaming had long been marketed on the fact that Game Pass Ultimate members could use it with essentially no limit. This change introduces a 15-hour monthly cap, citing the cost of scaling up server capacity, and any usage beyond that switches to a pay-as-you-go extra charge. The article the thread first cited was taken down and later replaced with a version that added details about the pay-as-you-go option — likely why early comments questioned whether the news was even real.
Opinions in the thread split over whether to read this as a simple cost adjustment or as an early sign of Microsoft pulling back from cloud gaming — and from the Xbox hardware business more broadly. Commenters pointed to PlayStation’s cloud/Portal business reportedly being profitable while Xbox’s isn’t, using that as a point of comparison.
One point of confusion for readers is the “30 minutes a day” framing — that’s simply the 15-hour monthly cap divided evenly across 30 days, not an officially stated daily limit. The exact per-hour price for overage usage also hadn’t been confirmed as of the thread’s latest posts.
