Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Update Upends Time Attack Records, Opinions Split

The story

A +0.1 change to coin-boost acceleration in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s latest update has pulled the rug out from under years of Time Attack (TA) records. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board (“Geha”), the change split posters between TA enthusiasts furious that their records were rendered meaningless without explanation, and cooler-headed users who shrugged it off with “just set new records under the new rules” or “TA players are a tiny minority, this is overblown.” Some pointed out that records from the old ruleset aren’t actually deleted, just archived separately by patch — leaving a noticeable gap in how seriously people took the controversy.

What people said

Looks like the +0.1 coin-boost change just made every existing TA record meaningless
2AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:05
Why not just get hyped and restart from scratch to set new records?
4AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:06
Just go set the record again, it's that simple
Don't lose your mind over something this trivial
6AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:08
Re: #4
Why'd they even add +0.1?
7AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:10
Re: #6
Go ask Nintendo
55AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:55
Re: #7
If they patch something that changes times with zero explanation, yeah, people are gonna be pissed
57AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:56
Re: #55
By that logic, racing games could never be updated again
59AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:58
Re: #55
Why rage on a gaming forum instead of complaining straight to Nintendo?
Not that I'm stopping you
8AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:11
Records are managed per patch to begin with
The old patch's champion title doesn't just vanish
9AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:13
Less than 0.01% of players even do TA runs
Let them rage among themselves
11AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:14
They're not mad about the record itself, they're mad about the ranking lol
16AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:17
Re: #11
Why not just compete in the new-ruleset category?

Right now you could probably blow past the old times and grab the top spot
12AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:15
It's really just a new ruleset category

I get the argument that it's meaningless if you can't keep playing under the same conditions, though

And records from the old ruleset stick around too, preserved permanently
13AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:15
A real athlete would just chase the top spot again once the rules change
15AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:17
What's even the deal with TA players?
I genuinely don't get the appeal at all

Even watching TA runs, they cut corners in weird spots that just look wasteful, so I never think "wow, impressive"
They just seem like an odd bunch to me

Re: #14
If you care this much, you must be a Time Attack guy yourself
Show us your times, then
19AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:18
Isn't this exactly the kind of thing that gets hardcore players hyped to hunt for new routes?
20AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:20
I could understand complaining about an actual nerf, but whining over a routine update is just toxic
21AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:20
What's the actual reason for bumping the speed up a notch?
22AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:20
I don't want to watch some "champion" cling forever to a record they only pulled off once, fluke or not
34AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:29
Why change the base speed at this point, of all things?
40AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:33
Re: #34
That's clearly aimed at people who want more reasons to keep grinding 8DX
49AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:43
Since [Mario Kart] World turned out to be a dud, a lot of players are probably coming back to 8DX
51AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:44
Re: #49
If you want to be cynical about it, this update could also be read as trying to keep people away from 8DX
60AnonymousSep 3, 2026 19:58
Doesn't the Switch 2 version run at a higher framerate anyway? Wouldn't that get you better times regardless?
64AnonymousSep 3, 2026 20:02
Re: #60
Ah, I see
So it's about bringing it in line with the Switch 2 version
The whole point of the update is probably to funnel people toward the Switch 2, so that tracks
69AnonymousSep 3, 2026 20:06
You get to discover new routes and everyone starts from zero — that's a good thing
If you're a TA player this is basically your one big shot at touching the #1 world ranking, so getting mad about it makes zero sense to me
72AnonymousSep 3, 2026 20:07
Re: #69
I can picture someone who doesn't even understand how TA records and rankings work just picking a fight based on assumptions
75AnonymousSep 3, 2026 20:17
Mario Kart is famous for quietly selling forever under the radar
It's kind of scary how it's a perennial fixture on the yearly sales charts
86AnonymousSep 3, 2026 20:34
Re: #75
Then they need to be more careful with their updates
82AnonymousSep 3, 2026 20:32
I'd get being mad if it got slower and made beating records impossible
But if it got faster, doesn't that just mean more to dig into? Shouldn't that be a good thing?
84AnonymousSep 3, 2026 20:34
Re: #82
That's an easy thing to say if you don't actually play it
83AnonymousSep 3, 2026 20:33
Now we finally get to throw this right back at Sony every time they push an update
88AnonymousSep 3, 2026 20:35
Re: #83
Though apparently people went ballistic demanding Shell no Surge (a game title) get pulled from the KOTY list ("Kuso of the Year," Japan's unofficial worst-game-of-the-year award) just because it can be patched
85AnonymousSep 3, 2026 20:34
Re: #57
If updates had kept coming steadily since launch, you'd figure more were on the way, but this really came out of nowhere — like, why now?

For reference, Sonic Racing handles it by tweaking multiplayer balance separately while leaving Time Attack mode on the old specs
89AnonymousSep 3, 2026 20:38
Re: #85
So it's a timing issue, huh
Though if they patch Time Attack separately, wouldn't that make it harder to practice?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s Time Attack (TA) system is designed so records are sorted and managed by patch (ruleset), and even after this update, records set under the old ruleset are preserved rather than erased. Several posters in the thread made this same point (>>8, >>12), suggesting the thread title’s claim of “wiping out the past entirely” is something of an exaggeration. The debate split along two lines: (1) whether even a small tweak like a +0.1 coin-boost change — which alters racing lines and undercuts the foundation of existing TA strategies — should be seen as an “unreasonable blow,” or whether players should simply take it as a chance to “chase the top spot again under the new ruleset”; and (2) whether the whole controversy deserves to be taken seriously at all, given how small the TA-playing population is. Some posters also speculated that the change was made to align with, or nudge players toward, the Switch 2 version, though this can’t be confirmed from the thread itself.
