Xenoblade 3 Alone Splits Opinion — 5ch: “Wordy Dialogue Is Part of Why It Left a Bad Impression”

The story

A thread on a gaming board debated the reputation of the Xenoblade series. Sparked by a post claiming “If it weren’t for 3, the whole series would be a masterpiece,” users discussed the merits of 1 and 2’s individual scenarios, complaints about 3’s story pacing and dialogue, and differing reactions overseas. The thread saw criticism that 3’s narrative structure was “rushed” and “wordy” clash with calls to judge the series as a whole, and the conversation eventually branched out into character design trends and Nintendo’s IP strategy behind the series.

1: A polished, deep scenario
X: Strong personality, one of a kind
2: A classic, red-blooded story

Honestly I don't think 3's story itself is bad when you look at it as a whole.
The biggest reason it leaves a bad impression is the bittersweet-ending vibe of the presentation, and above all how wordy the characters' text — or rather, their dialogue — gets.
Especially Noah.

Honestly the ending is just under-explained and crammed in at a rushed pace, so you end up going "wait, what?" — but if you sort it out later with the lore in mind, it does hold together to some degree.
What really ruins the game is the back half, where the whole "exchange of lives" theme that's supposed to be the main point ends up meaningless, plus stress-inducing garbage scenario bits like the long-winded fat guy's flashback and the sloppy jailbreak plan.
Even XDE chapter 13 handles the "life for life" theme more properly.

3 has a monotonous story like a two-hour movie, so it goes over badly with Japanese fans but well with overseas fans.

Re: #36
Guess it's free to dream the impossible dream that it's popular overseas.

The "Xeno-haters" were making the exact same complaints back in 2015 when Xenoblade Chronicles X first released, and they're still making them in 2025 for Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition.
It's honestly scary that their attitude toward the game hasn't changed in 10 years — that only happens if you've refused to take in any new information at all.

Re: #37
Brings back memories of them being so absorbed in bashing Xenoblade Chronicles X that they were caught totally off guard by Splatoon's massive hit, lol
44AnonymousAug 31, 2026 08:47
Is it really getting praised, though? It's always just someone making a thread to trash Xeno, getting shot down for it, or the thread turning into a chit-chat thread and getting hijacked.

Re: #40
That's actually true — that "Whatchamacallit 33" game (i.e. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33) also went over well overseas because it's got a movie-like story.
For you guys entertainment means manga and anime, but over there movies are the main entertainment, so the tastes are just different.

The real motive on the "Xeno-hater" side is that they want to argue on topics where "Nosuke" (a forum regular known for sales-chart arguments) and distribution numbers don't come into play.
In fact, arguments in Xeno-related threads actually come with people bringing proper in-universe evidence to back their points, rather than just being emotional slap-fights.
And above all, the person on the other side isn't one guy pretending to be several.

If it were right after release, sure, but going out of your way to argue about a game's content years later on Geha (5ch's hardware/console-wars board) is a total complex.
Before you go knocking Xeno, you should be hyping up Tales, Kiseki (Trails), or Marvel instead.

Re: #55
Sure, that's true for threads made now, but people were saying this exact thing nonstop back during the DLC promo period too, lol

Re: #55
If it were a bash thread for those other series, sure, but praise or chit-chat threads probably just don't last and the thread falls off the board.

Re: #61
Same goes for Fire Emblem, but having Nintendo's backing is a real strength.
The scale is completely different, but maybe something like CDPR, which gets state support, is a closer comparison.

Everyone knows Xenoblade will keep getting made, so even if an entry stumbles a bit there's nothing to worry about.
What's actually worrying is that pitches for other IPs just don't get approved at all.
Feels like Nintendo's gone into turtle mode.
99AnonymousAug 31, 2026 09:52
Genesis feels kind of shaky too, honestly.
Like how plain the characters are.
101AnonymousAug 31, 2026 09:54
Re: #99
FE Banshi's character buzz has been getting better and better ever since its first reveal, so maybe it's the same story for Genesis depending on what comes next?
102AnonymousAug 31, 2026 09:59
Re: #99
Honestly I think the characters are plain in every entry except 2.
Say what you want, but 2 had a ton of character designs prepared, so it stood out.
106AnonymousAug 31, 2026 10:14
Re: #99
2's character designs were just aimed squarely at kids — the Xenoblade series is basically plain-looking otherwise.
104AnonymousAug 31, 2026 10:02
The Blade art has no unity
Each Blade's events are thin
There are too many Blades you never use

And yet 3's Hero content was made specifically in response to that feedback.
The people who keep endlessly whining "I wanted more of what 2 did!"
lost out to the people who actually gave the developers proper feedback.
105AnonymousAug 31, 2026 10:13
Re: #104
Was "the Blade art lacks unity" actually a complaint people had?
I thought it was good that each artist brought their own distinct style.

Re: #104
And that's exactly why it's no good — they went and made unhinged stuff like Ethel's storyline, with its ethics-free resurrection and life-span-shortening nonsense.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Xenoblade series is an RPG developed by Monolith Soft and published by Nintendo since the first title in 2010; the third entry, released in 2022, has drawn mixed reactions compared to the first two games over its character banter and story pacing. The “overseas reception” discussed in the thread isn’t backed by concrete sales data — it’s based on subjective opinions drawn from individual reviews and impressions, with no numerical evidence presented. Also, Expedition 33, brought up as a point of comparison, is a 2025 RPG from an unrelated company with no connection to the Xenoblade series. While Xenoblade continues to receive new entries as one of Nintendo’s flagship IPs, the thread also voiced the view that pitches for new titles in other Nintendo-originated IPs have a harder time getting approved — reflecting an underlying interest in the series’ position within Nintendo as a whole.

*This article was compiled by excerpting and summarizing the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, aka Geha) thread “If it weren’t for Xenoblade 3, you could call every entry in the series a god-tier masterpiece — such a shame.”
