Goodbye Lara Episode 10: Fans Buzz Over Real Cel Animation and Pre-Broadcast Leaks

The story

Following the broadcast of Episode 10 of the anime “Goodbye Lara,” the thread lit up over the discovery that the show’s distinctively textured animation was actually shot using real cel (hand-painted transparency) footage on an animation stand, along with speculation about the psychological meaning behind the different drinks Luka gave Lara. Multiple posters also shared pilgrimage reports from real-world locations featured in the show, such as Lake Biwa Terrace, complete with photos of the crowds and fog on site. On top of that, some pointed out that content said to have circulated from overseas accounts before the broadcast matched the actual episode, prompting calls to be on guard against leaks of the next episode.

◆When starting a new thread, copy the following so it fits on three lines↑

Though a mermaid princess, Lara longed for love with a human.

But — that wish would not come true, and she vanished into the sea as sea foam.

Thanks for the new thread
Previous thread hit 1000
Nah, that texture is obviously real cel animation, you can tell at a glance

Re: #6
On first watch I figured it just looked cel-style, but I never imagined they were actually shooting it on a real animation stand

Re: #12
At the preview screening they played a short behind-the-scenes video before the opening, so we already knew they were using real cels before watching the episode itself
Even after showing us that much, we were told to keep quiet about it

Re: #12
Same here
I mean, you could fake a cel-style look digitally if you really wanted to

I love Goodbye Lara and the staff, but
honestly there wasn't really any need to insist on real cels

Stuff that's okay to photograph.
Apparently the exhibit started today.

I really don't think Lara's the one who'll confess first
her feelings clearly aren't into it
she's more worried about the food than about Luka tripping and falling
she keeps a straight face even about the ladybug's message
and she doesn't look like she's enjoying herself at all even on the swan boat
49AnonymousAug 29, 2026 18:13
Re: #46
I wonder what Lara's going to say while she's grabbing Luka's clothes to stop him
54AnonymousAug 29, 2026 18:41
Re: #46
Going by the synopsis Lara's the one panicking, so
I think Lara will push herself on Luka and he'll get confused and turn her down
72AnonymousAug 30, 2026 00:36
Isn't Luka just falling over all the time because he's simply clumsy…?
75AnonymousAug 30, 2026 01:43
Re: #72
Yeah I think that's just it
his little brother even calls him clumsy in his first appearance episode
76AnonymousAug 30, 2026 01:44
Re: #72
That's possible, but I do wonder whether they'd really choose such a distinctive way of falling just to portray Luka as a klutz.
86AnonymousAug 30, 2026 09:51
Hates humans (but loves their culture)
92AnonymousAug 30, 2026 11:18
Re: #86
Rowan hates humans, but Lisa doesn't seem to, huh
also she's not into the dark either — so what was up with her being lit up like that?
or is that just a profile inconsistency

Her tastes sound like a Japanese grandma's

A super-elderly lady who's obsessed with washing cars

Curry bread from Lake Biwa Terrace.
Fresh out of the fryer, so it's too hot to hold.

89AnonymousAug 30, 2026 10:32
This is how it looked at 9am today.
Can't see the view at all.

91AnonymousAug 30, 2026 11:08
Re: #89
It would've been nice for someone who traveled so far to see the grand view, but I guess you could be satisfied knowing you got the same experience, the same view, as Lara and the others
Well done making the trip
Take care on your pilgrimage

Re: #89
Honestly the fog looks nice and cool
Can you actually jump off partway through this thing?
105AnonymousAug 30, 2026 12:56
Phew, glad the bread survived!

a classic Goodbye Lara moment

Re: #105
I thought that spot was flat, but there's actually a step there.
I took this from where I bought the bread, so the step's hard to make out.

Re: #110
Yeah, that really is hard to see
you could actually trip on this
107AnonymousAug 30, 2026 13:33
Made it to Notogawa Arena, but there seems to be a sports tournament going on with athletes out front, so I can't get a photo of the building.

109AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:01
Quick question — am I right that Lara already knew from episode 1 that she'd turn into foam and die once the medicine wore off?
113AnonymousAug 30, 2026 15:52
Re: #109
Didn't she only find out because Lisa told her?
118AnonymousAug 30, 2026 16:17
Re: #109
I think it's fine to just assume she didn't know
111AnonymousAug 30, 2026 15:06
W-wait, don't tell me you went to Lake Biwa Terrace… alone?!
112AnonymousAug 30, 2026 15:48
Re: #111
Of course, alone.
This time I got a clear card at Heiwado (a local supermarket chain) but forgot to go to the fresh fish section, and there are still spots I haven't made a pilgrimage to, so I'll give it another shot after the show wraps up.

It'll probably be around the time I go check out this Nara event.

Re: #111
Nothing wrong with going solo
if parking were cheaper I'd buy an annual pass and go by myself just to take photos
(2000 yen on weekends is way too much for somewhere that isn't even downtown — makes me not want to go back repeatedly)

She accepted the can of cocoa from Mari, but she clearly rejected the mystery drink (an energy drink?) that Luka gave her — feels like there's some meaning behind that

284AnonymousAug 31, 2026 01:53
Re: #274
The cocoa was given to her when she was all alone, so she was happy about it
with the energy drink, it was the bird scene right after that let her feel Luka's kindness
it's not like one has to negate the other
286AnonymousAug 31, 2026 01:55
Re: #274
Luka probably would've been happy if Lara came to like the things he likes, but
what he gives her afterward on Blumen Hill was cocoa after all
289AnonymousAug 31, 2026 01:57
But man
that episode 9 leak from the overseas account that was going around beforehand turned out to be the real deal…
292AnonymousAug 31, 2026 01:58
Re: #289
If that's the case, episode 10 will probably leak too…
better take precautions
295AnonymousAug 31, 2026 01:59
Re: #289
Huh? I thought that was just fan art, so it was actually a leak?
300AnonymousAug 31, 2026 02:02
Re: #289
Seriously?
what did the leak actually show?
383AnonymousAug 31, 2026 03:28
The direction is amazing
the breaker tripping, the lighting, the moon shown almost fully eclipsed — all building unease
they only show Mari's mouth, never her eyes (so you can't tell if she really means it when she says it's for the best)
the spinning tire in the confession scene cutting to a flash of Mari also feels loaded with meaning

Luka was doing his best to understand Lara, but
his choice of drink didn't land
and the portrait he draws of Lara doesn't look anything like her
that's probably why he went to Mari to say he can't understand Lara
I think the reason he turned down the kiss at the end was some kind of fear that comes from not truly understanding her
385AnonymousAug 31, 2026 03:30
Re: #383
Wasn't it simply that her breath smelled bad?
She's a mermaid, so she'd probably smell fishy
388AnonymousAug 31, 2026 03:36
Re: #383
The portrait will probably be finished the moment Luka comes to understand Lara
though that's probably the final episode
389AnonymousAug 31, 2026 03:39
Re: #383
Whether it's what someone likes or anything else, that's the kind of thing you come to understand about each other gradually — but the lack of time is what's getting in the way here

Background and Key Points of Discussion

“Goodbye Lara” depicts a romance between a mermaid and a human, and this time the discussion centered on three main points. First is the animation technique: a behind-the-scenes video shown at the preview screening revealed that the show’s distinctive texture comes from real cel animation shot on an animation stand. Second is a psychological reading based on the drinks (cocoa vs. an energy drink) that Luka gave Lara, with fans interpreting the difference in gifts as a sign that Luka still doesn’t fully understand Lara. Third is the topic of a “leak”: content said to have circulated from overseas accounts before the broadcast reportedly matched the actual episode, raising concern about the next episode as well. All of this remains within the realm of fan speculation and impressions — it’s worth noting that neither the authenticity of the leak nor the intended meaning behind Luka’s psychological portrayal has been officially confirmed. Several pilgrimage reports were also posted, showing fans enjoying the contrast between the real-world scenery and the show’s scenes.
