  • Monkey Rampages Through Residential Neighborhood, Hurls Cat Into Pond and Injures Man — Shunan, Yamaguchi

At around 3:30 PM on the 13th, a monkey leapt down from a roof in the yard of a house in Tokuyama, Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and attacked a 49-year-old man, leaving a minor injury on his back. The animal, a lone adult estimated at about 50 centimeters long, was also seen at the scene catching a cat and hurling it into a pond. On 5ch, the thread unexpectedly took off, with posters worrying over the tossed cat’s fate, swapping trivia about monkey behavior, and clashing over opinions on culling wildlife.

Tame enough to be scooped right out of the pond, and apparently there's a kitten at the house — maybe it's one of those cases where someone was feeding a stray, it had kittens, and they only took in that one as their own.

The article says it's a stray living at the house and its kitten, and there was a photo of the pond — it's a small pond. Since it's a young kitten that got caught that easily even while being tormented by a monkey, I'd guess it's easy enough for a person to catch too, especially if it's drowning.

Watch lemurs and they all cooperate and share food, but with Japanese macaques, even when a baby monkey finally gets hold of some food, a big adult will seriously attack and bite it to steal it away. No other creature is this rotten both in looks and personality — they should just go extinct.

    Background and Key Talking Points

Monkey attacks on people aren’t unique to Yamaguchi — they’re reported nationwide, and incursions into residential areas along with crop damage have become an ongoing headache for local governments. The thread’s reference to “Peace-kun from Omiya Park” points to a monkey that caused a stir in Saitama Prefecture back in 2024, which posters likened to this incident. The original article never clarified whether the thrown cat survived, and commenters called it out as a “thoughtless article.” Also worth noting, since it’s commonly misunderstood: culling a problem animal requires local government authorization under Japan’s Act on the Protection and Management of Wildlife — it’s not something private citizens can simply do on their own.

  • Idol Fest Mosh Pit Shuts Down the Music Mid-Song — 5ch: “Moshing Makes It ‘Real’? Lame.”

At a Gunma-chan idol festival show, audience members engaged in moshing and other dangerous behavior, forcing the song to stop mid-performance and the show to be halted. The performing group’s official account commented that the stoppage was “the organizers’ decision,” and reportedly also said they intend to put on a “real festival unbound by regulations.” On 5ch, opinions split between those backing the organizers for prioritizing safety and those criticizing the lack of clear rule announcements and inconsistent handling by staff, with many also questioning the whole point of moshing at an idol show in the first place.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Moshing originated as an audience-participation style from overseas punk and hardcore scenes, and in recent years it’s crept into some idol venues as well. This particular event appears to have had a public, local-government connection, and there are claims that rules banning dangerous behavior were announced beforehand. What split the thread was, first, how to judge the organizers’ response — should the show have been stopped the instant dangerous behavior appeared, or would a staged response with a warning first have been better — and second, how to read the group’s comment about wanting to “put on a real festival unbound by regulations.” Those defending the organizers argue it’s too late once someone’s hurt, while skeptics point to the unfairness of moshing being overlooked in multiple spots that day while only this one group’s show got cancelled. Understanding of what moshing actually is also varies a lot between posters, suggesting the term itself has spread faster than any real grasp of what it involves.

  • Bunshun Teases a Takedown of an ‘Enta’ Comedian — 5ch Erupts Into a Guessing Game

At noon on the 14th, a teaser reading only “Bunshun’s Cannon Aimed at an Enta Comedian” began circulating, and with the target’s name withheld, a 5ch thread turned into a full-blown guessing game over who it could be. The only clue was a single silhouette image, and names of comedians who appeared on 2000s “Enta”-style variety shows — Hanawa, Passion Yura, Ultraman, Stretch Man, and more — came up one after another. Mentions of comedians who seemingly never get hit with scandals, like Egashira 2:50, got thrown in too, and the thread was buzzing well before any confirmed information surfaced.

    Background and Talking Points

Before an issue hits newsstands, Shukan Bunshun sometimes runs a teaser on “Bunshun Online” that withholds the target’s identity, along the lines of “embargo lifts today at noon” — and this “Bunshun’s Cannon Aimed at an Enta Comedian” post followed that same playbook. With the name kept secret, 5ch users ended up throwing out the name of practically every comedian who’d ever appeared on an Enta-style variety show. Worth noting: the only clue was a single silhouette image, and nobody actually had confirmed information. The thread’s appeal wasn’t about attacking any specific comedian — it was purely a guessing game — and based on the posts available at this point, there’s no way to confirm who the target actually turned out to be.

  • Nozomi Sasaki’s Son and Daughter Fight Over Who Gets Mom — Husband’s Face Says It All

Actress Nozomi Sasaki made a guest appearance on TV Asahi’s “After My Husband Falls Asleep,” airing late night on the 13th, where she talked about raising her kids. Her 8-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter apparently both compete over who gets to be “next to Mom,” leaving her husband, Ken Watanabe, with a complicated look on his face. On the 5ch Entertainment/Sports News+ thread, rather than focusing on this heartwarming family anecdote itself, the conversation centered almost entirely on Watanabe’s involvement in the affair scandal reported in 2020 (the so-called “multi-purpose restroom” incident), with many posters cracking jokes referencing his old scandal.

    That part was hilarious.
The woman Watanabe had the affair with went to a tabloid and called it 'an affair.'
So Sasaki came right back at her with something like, 'Oh, so it was an affair? Then I guess I'll be filing for damages against you — since it was an affair and all, I'll expect a hefty payout, thanks,' and the woman just went silent and vanished lol

Background and Key Points of This Topic

In 2020, while active as part of the comedy duo “Anjash,” Ken Watanabe had relationships with multiple women that were reported by tabloid magazines, leading him to take a long hiatus from entertainment work. The keyword “multi-purpose restroom” comes from the secret meeting spot named in that reporting, and has since become a go-to mocking nickname for him online. This thread was originally about a heartwarming episode Nozomi Sasaki shared about raising her kids, but most of the replies drifted into jokes rehashing his old affair scandal. Note that the affair was not a criminal matter, and some comments using the term “sex crime” are a mischaracterization that doesn’t match the reported facts.

  • Netflix Grabs Exclusive Rights to All of Spain’s 2030 World Cup Matches — 5ch: ‘Great, As Long As It’s Not on Free TV’

On October 13, Netflix announced it had acquired the exclusive broadcast rights to all matches in Spain and Andorra, two of the co-host nations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The company also holds exclusive streaming rights for the US and Canada for the 2027 and 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cups. On 5ch, a debate broke out over just how far that ‘exclusive’ label extends, with posters pointing to reports that Spain’s national team matches, the semifinals, and the final will still air free on terrestrial TV — prompting a string of corrections. The thread also spiraled into a back-and-forth between soccer fans and baseball fans.

Netflix announced on the 13th that it has acquired the exclusive broadcast rights to all matches of the FIFA World Cup 2030 in Spain and Andorra.

Netflix, which operates one of the world’s largest video streaming platforms, revealed that in addition to live coverage of every match in the tournament, it plans to stream pre- and post-match programming, daily highlights on match days, and special programs ahead of the tournament’s start.

Furthermore, Netflix also holds exclusive streaming rights in the United States and Canada for the FIFA Women’s World Cups to be held in 2027 and 2031. It also announced plans to stream the draw ceremony for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027, scheduled for December 11 this year.

The broadcast rights fees are on a totally different scale than the WBC's, so there probably won't be many matches included in the base price
So if you want to watch every match, you'll likely need to pay extra

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The 2030 World Cup is an unusual tournament co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with additional matches in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay as part of a 100th-anniversary commemoration; broadcast rights are sold separately for each country or region. What Netflix acquired this time is only the rights for Spain and Andorra, but on the thread, a string of posts latched onto the word ‘exclusive’ alone and mistakenly assumed terrestrial broadcasts would vanish entirely. In reality, according to reports, Spain’s national team matches, the semifinals and final, and one match per round are still expected to be available free on terrestrial TV, meaning Netflix’s exclusivity only covers a portion of the matches. That correction then snowballed into a back-and-forth between soccer and baseball fans, who brought up the WBC’s streaming setup for comparison.

  • Ohtani to Start Game 3 of the NLCS Again — Manager Roberts: ‘He’s Onto Something’

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed on the 13th that Shohei Ohtani will again start in Game 3 of the NLCS. Ohtani has been mired in a batting slump this series, and the possibility of him starting on the bench had even been floated, but after talking things over with Ohtani, Roberts explained that he’s ‘onto something’ with his hitting and decided to keep starting him. On 5ch, the thread split between posters harshly criticizing the slump itself and those arguing that, having come this far, the team should commit to riding or dying with Ohtani — with plenty of differing takes on what’s really behind the decision.

MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers held their day-before workout at home at Dodger Stadium on the 13th (14th Japan time) ahead of Game 3 of the NLCS. After dropping the first two games on the road, they’re looking to turn things around over a three-game homestand. Manager Dave Roberts, 54, addressed the slumping Shohei Ohtani, 32.

The manager stated, ‘I talked with Shohei. We had a really good conversation. He has a strong will to play. He feels he’s in good enough shape to be in the lineup, and he’s onto something with his hitting. I have a very good feeling about that too,’ confirming that Ohtani will start again in Game 3.

Well, they made it this far thanks to Ohtani, so going down with him at the end seems fair enough

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Ohtani has been playing solely as a hitter this season, and after the Dodgers dropped the first two games of the NLCS at home, some had floated benching him from the starting lineup due to his batting slump. Manager Roberts has explained that, after talking it over with Ohtani, he decided to keep starting him out of respect for Ohtani’s own desire to play. On the thread, opinions split between those who see the ‘onto something’ comment as thin, unsubstantiated optimism, and those who feel that, having come this far, the team should stick with Ohtani to the end. It’s worth noting that comments like ‘the sponsors made a deposit’ are baseless jabs, not an actual stated reason for the decision. Between arguments over who’s to blame for the slump and whether continuing to start him is the right call, opinions remain split.

A paper by a research team from IBM, Rutgers University, and others reporting the observation of a “phase transition from quantum chaos to order” — achieved through repeated measurement-and-reset cycles in a 100-qubit experiment — was published in Nature Physics on October 9. On 5ch’s Science News+ thread, opinions split over just how close this result actually brings quantum computers to practical use. Some posters, recalling past “quantum bubble” collapses, warned that this was just hype; others emphasized that the work had cleared peer review, and carefully explained how this experiment differs from quantum error correction. The discussion also spread to when codebreaking might actually become feasible.

    Gemini's summary

A research team from IBM, Rutgers University, and others succeeded in observing a "phase transition from quantum chaos to order" in a 100-qubit experiment through repeated measurement-and-reset operations.

    Key points

    • Experiment scale: Repeated measurement and reset operations performed on 100 qubits.
    • Number of iterations: Quantum state control was carried out through roughly 5,000 repeated operations.
    • Result: It was shown that a chaotic many-body quantum system transitions into an ordered state once the frequency/conditions of external intervention (measurement and reset) cross a threshold.
    • Significance: Seen as an important step toward understanding quantum error correction and entanglement dynamics, and toward stable control of quantum computers
    5AnonymousOct 12, 2026 21:52
This is a classic case of hype dressed up through impression management

That said, resetting all qubits to a known state and protecting unknown quantum information (as quantum error correction must) are fundamentally different goals.

Dunno, but even just looking at the surface wording as a layman — if chaos becomes order, then "phase" (相), i.e. 転移 (ten'i) / 移転 (iten), is just the translation of the English word "transfer"
(kind of like 産生 (sansei) / 生産 (seisan) being the translation of "produce" — that's the level of stupidity Japanese academics operate at)
    that's what's changing

To begin with, the English text opens with something like "chaos (theory) is a very familiar idea in science," which tells you it's written for people who already understand what "chaos" means scientifically
Anyone who reads it at the level of "there was chaos in ancient times" goes off in the wrong direction from there

What this experiment aimed to do was reset qubits to the known "0" state.
Quantum error correction, by contrast, has to protect the unknown quantum information being used in a computation.
Sure, if you measure the qubits and reset them all to 0, you do get an ordered state — but in the process, you also destroy the quantum information that was supposed to be preserved.
Understanding this difference in goals is essential to thinking about how this result relates to fault-tolerant quantum computing.

What this experiment and quantum error correction have in common is the technical element of measuring partway through a quantum computation and repeating processing based on the results.
This study does not show that logical qubits were protected and error rates were lowered.
Even so, there's value in having coordinated large-scale measurement and feedback on an actual quantum processor and obtaining statistical data usable for verifying the underlying physics — because it managed to carry out, on a large-scale circuit, the repeated measure-and-control operations that quantum error correction will also require.

Quantum computers don't make computation faster across the board
They only speed up specific problems like integer factorization, so encryption algorithms that depend on that are simply being phased out of new adoption,

    Good news
Looks like US NIST has officially certified AES-128 as safe post-quantum cryptography
This was in the English-language source article that the Nikkei xTECH piece was based on
So, at least for AES-128, claims like Team Mirai's (a Japanese political party) "the encryption will be broken" are flat-out false
Not sure about elliptic-curve cryptography, but it's probably safe too, right?

In justifying the use of AES-128, NIST refers to the same observations we explained above, and introduces the concept of MAXDEPTH which is exactly the maximum serial computation that forces parallelization and limits Grover's quadratic speedup.

I bet there's at least one Gigazine reporter out there reading the 5ch thread on their own article

Background and Key Points of the Debate

This result demonstrates a “measurement-driven phase transition” that resets qubits to a known state — a goal different from quantum error correction, which protects the unknown quantum information used in a computation. Because this distinction wasn’t easy to grasp, the thread split between those who saw it as “hype” or a “bubble” and those who, pointing to its peer-reviewed publication, judged the result on its merits. On the cryptography side, with an eye toward practical quantum computers, the US’s NIST is pushing a transition to post-quantum cryptography such as lattice-based schemes, and even experts disagree on exactly when AES-128 or elliptic-curve cryptography might actually be threatened. The significance of the research itself needs to be read separately from the inflated expectation that codebreaking is “right around the corner.”

  • Shohei Ohtani Benched, DePaula to Start at DH — 5ch: “Did They Finally Remove the Cursed Ornament?”

On 5ch’s “Live Broadcast G” board, word spread that the Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani would start on the bench for a postseason game, with DePaula taking over at DH. Ohtani has been mired in a slump, going homerless in 110 at-bats this season, and the move is believed to follow a conversation between Ohtani and manager Dave Roberts — though conflicting reports claim Ohtani has shown strong eagerness to play, leaving the situation murky. On the thread, some blamed the slump on age-related decline, while others speculated that if DePaula delivers results, Ohtani’s playing time could shrink even further, with opinions divided over the reasoning behind the move and what happens next.

It's a fact that the team doesn't get energized and morale doesn't rise unless Ohtani is hitting.
Back when he was casually smashing leadoff homers in the first inning like it was nothing, the lineup had momentum and they were winning.
His teammates got used to assuming Ohtani would homer as a matter of course, which let them relax at the plate and produce good results themselves — so there's no doubt that something negative kicks in once Ohtani stops hitting.

That's exactly why Betts is the most worried about Ohtani's condition, and has even said they can't keep advancing without him.

The kind of people who'd actually pay just from seeing a plain paper notice are relatively conscientious already
so I think it's questionable to go out of your way to annoy exactly those people

Background and Key Points of Debate

Collection notices are a routine administrative step sent to people who’ve fallen behind on taxes or insurance premiums, and the wording is normally dry and bureaucratic. What made this one newsworthy was the use of forceful language apparently meant to boost the chances recipients would actually open the envelope. The thread’s main fault line ran between a defense — that encouraging people to open the notice is meant to help them avoid the worst-case outcome of having assets seized — and criticism that the ward should lower premiums instead of spending budget and effort on a stunt like this. A poster claiming to be a Bunkyo Ward resident also shared that their own resident-tax collection notice came in a similarly flashy, multicolor design, suggesting this kind of attention-grabbing notice design may not be limited to this one case. • Keio University’s Hironari Hiroike to Challenge MLB Without Going Through NPB — 5ch: “Let’s See Results First, Then We’ll Talk”

Keio University pitcher Hironari Hiroike (22) has decided to pursue a challenge in MLB without going through NPB if he isn’t drafted at the October 22 NPB Draft Meeting, Nikkan Sports reported. He throws a fastball topping out at 156 km/h (97 mph), and several US teams, including the Rangers and Yankees, are reportedly interested. His father is Koji Hiroike (53), general manager of the Seibu Lions, and if this comes to pass, he would follow fellow Keio alum Kotaro Tsunematsu (22), who signed with the Cubs last year, becoming the second straight year a Keio player has joined an MLB organization. On 5ch, discussion spread to cover the difficulty of challenging the majors without NPB experience, the attention drawn by his father’s position as a team executive, and the current struggles of Tsunematsu, who went to the US before him.

It was learned on the 13th that Keio University pitcher Hironari Hiroike (senior = Keio), son of Seibu Lions general manager Koji Hiroike (53) and owner of a fastball that tops out at 156 km/h, has decided to pursue a challenge in MLB without going through NPB. If he is not drafted at the October 22 Draft Meeting, he will accelerate the move to the majors he has been harboring. Negotiations would come after the full official schedule concludes, but if realized, he would follow outfielder Kotaro Tsunematsu (22), who signed with the Cubs last year, as the second consecutive year a Keio player has joined an MLB organization. According to sources in the baseball world, several US teams have already shown interest, making his future moves one to watch closely.

Clawing your way up from the minors is brutal in MLB. In Japan there's still a shot ("wanchan" — punning on "one chance" and the dog joke above) of going straight into the starting lineup on the top team.

The only Japanese pitchers without NPB experience who've ever made it to the majors are probably Mac Suzuki, Tadano, and Tazawa.
And they were all first-round-pick caliber.

    What about Roki Sasaki?

Seibu drafts him in the developmental slot
→ "I was moved by GM Hiroike's persuasion, I'll sign with Seibu"
What are the odds of this actually happening?

In that case, Seibu would need to draft him in that year's draft.

Because NPB doesn't really "develop" players —
pitch-count management and position assignments are all one-sided.

If it doesn't work out, Daddy's probably got a job lined up for him too, right?

Must be nice being a Keio kid.

Apparently he got married. Well, if you can afford to get married while still in the minors, he's probably got other options even if baseball doesn't pan out.

He broke his wrist this season and has
    only played in 6 games.
    13AnonymousOct 14, 2026 06:33
Well, he's not top-tier talent so I think it's a "sure, go ahead" situation. That Tsunematsu guy only went to America because he went undrafted too.
    14AnonymousOct 14, 2026 06:34
He seems like he'd do decently in NPB, so why bother?
He could just live comfortably with Seibu.
    15AnonymousOct 14, 2026 06:36
Did Hiroike really rise all the way to GM despite not having much of a pro playing record?

He's the key figure behind this year's Seibu resurgence on the front-office side.

Having a good playing record doesn't automatically mean you're good at the job either. He was probably just a competent professional in his own right.
    17AnonymousOct 14, 2026 06:37
So that Hiroike's son grew into such a fine pitcher.
The father himself hurt his shoulder and played as a fielder through high school, college, and corporate-league ball, yet still entered the pros as a pitcher.
If he hadn't hurt his shoulder, he might have become an incredible pitcher.
    18AnonymousOct 14, 2026 06:37
Even if it doesn't work out, top companies will hire him just for having taken the challenge, right?

I'd rather have Iiyama Junior than Hiroike Junior.

Hiroike gives off a strong Hiroshima image, but
far from having no connection to Seibu,
he was actually a member of the Seibu Lions Fan Club
    as a kid,
so he's basically one of the longest-standing Seibu Lions fans there is.
    22AnonymousOct 14, 2026 06:44
His dad is a guy who carved out his own path to the pros too.

By the way, Rintaro, 22, who signed with the Marlins this year, will be in the rookie league next year,
and Morii, who signed last year, is currently in a lower-level A-ball league.

If they don't produce results within a few years, they'll be cut.
It's not like they'll wait eight years for you the way they did for Neo.

Nishida is definitely one of the success stories.
He went from Tohoku High School to a US college, then
got picked in the 11th round (329th overall) of the 2023 MLB Draft.
From there, he made it to the majors in just three years.

He's small (168cm/5'6"), but he probably got noticed for being able to play a
    heads-up, detail-oriented brand of baseball.

Let's be honest, Big-Six-league Keio is a pain to deal with.
They don't impose an obvious round cutoff,
but there's an atmosphere where the baseball team's pride makes them resist low-round or developmental picks.

Even though Kiyohara's son himself says he doesn't care about that,
the coach and the OBs (alumni) around him make a fuss about it — of course he doesn't get drafted.

Why is the Dodgers' Enriquez — a flamethrower on the level of Mizurowski (was that the name?) — stuck as like the 5th reliever in the bullpen?
If he's got heat like that, he should just learn three more pitches and start instead.
He's throwing 164 km/h (102 mph) without even trying hard.
    84AnonymousOct 14, 2026 08:37
Well, if you're a Keio grad, making some memories in the US before slipping into a top-tier company might honestly be smarter than floundering around in NPB.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Among Japanese pitchers who went straight to the majors without going through NPB, only a handful — Mac Suzuki, Kazuhito Tadano, and Junichi Tazawa — actually managed to stick in MLB. Roki Sasaki, whose name came up in the thread, is a different case: he was posted after building a track record in NPB first, so the premise doesn’t match Hiroike’s situation. Meanwhile, Hiroike’s father, Koji Hiroike, is drawing attention less for his own playing record than for his reputation as the front-office figure credited with Seibu’s roster-building behind this season’s resurgence — turning jabs like “he got promoted despite a thin playing record” into, in effect, a fair acknowledgment of his front-office skill. The comparison repeatedly cited was Kotaro Tsunematsu (22), who signed a minor-league deal with the Cubs last year but has struggled this season — hitting .150 in just 6 games after a wrist fracture — serving as a recurring example of how hard it is to aim directly for the majors. The thread’s discussion settled into two overlapping threads: “how difficult it is to challenge MLB without going through NPB” and “this is a path only available because of his Keio background and family circumstances,” mixing genuine evaluation of his ability with pointed commentary on his social background.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geisoku Sokuho+) thread “Keio’s Hironari Hiroike leaning toward an MLB challenge, drawing interest from multiple teams including the Rangers and Yankees — following Keio alum Kotaro Tsunematsu (22), who signed with the Cubs last year.”
