Ohtani to Start Game 3 of the NLCS Again — Manager Roberts: ‘He’s Onto Something’

The story

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed on the 13th that Shohei Ohtani will again start in Game 3 of the NLCS. Ohtani has been mired in a batting slump this series, and the possibility of him starting on the bench had even been floated, but after talking things over with Ohtani, Roberts explained that he’s ‘onto something’ with his hitting and decided to keep starting him. On 5ch, the thread split between posters harshly criticizing the slump itself and those arguing that, having come this far, the team should commit to riding or dying with Ohtani — with plenty of differing takes on what’s really behind the decision.

MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers held their day-before workout at home at Dodger Stadium on the 13th (14th Japan time) ahead of Game 3 of the NLCS. After dropping the first two games on the road, they’re looking to turn things around over a three-game homestand. Manager Dave Roberts, 54, addressed the slumping Shohei Ohtani, 32.

The manager stated, ‘I talked with Shohei. We had a really good conversation. He has a strong will to play. He feels he’s in good enough shape to be in the lineup, and he’s onto something with his hitting. I have a very good feeling about that too,’ confirming that Ohtani will start again in Game 3.

Judging by yesterday's at-bats, I really don't see it…
This one was especially rough

Re: #4
Just because he can't hit, blatantly going for a catcher's-interference call is just pathetic🤮
5AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:16
Bet the sponsors slipped him some cash
6AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:17
Either way they can't win without Ohtani, so they might as well sink or swim together with him
7AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:18
If he doesn't rest properly his value's just going to tank

The 'awakening' challenge — pick the road to ruin
Public enemy #1 (lit. 'Class-A war criminal'), put on display for all to see
11AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:18
If anything, Ohtani's the one dragging the team down, that's why they're not winning lol
14AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:19
Impressive that you can watch that swing and still think that
16AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:19
So they've decided to go down with Ohtani if it comes to it
Of course, if they win, all is forgiven
18AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:20
Roberts let it slip that there's apparently some contract clause saying they have to talk it over with Ohtani and get his buy-in before benching him
So Ohtani just didn't want to sit out
If they lose now, it's entirely on Ohtani
19AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:21
It's obvious he can't swing hard anymore because of the injury, there's no 'sign' of anything
If he could still swing hard but just wasn't getting results, I'd get the reasoning for using him
21AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:23
Did the Japanese sponsors go lean on the owner?
They don't want headlines about him pathetically watching the last game from the bench as they get eliminated
22AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:24
The Real Eye Jutsu has arriveddd━━━━(°∀°)━━━━!! (riffing on the 'awakening' talk, Naruto-style)

Friedman: 'We just got a deposit from the sponsors'
25AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:26
Even getting talked to in that state, he's like 'no thanks, I'm playing'
Not your average guy, gotta give him that
27AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:26
He seems kind of scared of pain lately
Like he got the yips after getting hit by a pitch or taking a knee to the elbow
28AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:27
This is basically an SOS from Roberts lol
Wake up, Japan! It's not my call to bench Ottosho (nickname for Ohtani used in the thread)!!
29AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:29
Nah, that's not it
Starting Ohtani is just [Amari] covering himself from blame in case they lose
30AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:30
They're probably running psy-ops on the Brewers
32AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:32
Is starting Roki no longer an option?
38AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:36
Re: #32
Well if he keeps getting hit hard every single time through the order the second time around, yeah, that'll do it
He's not back to his peak yet but his velocity's actually up, which surprised me a bit
Shame he probably can't fully get back to his old form, but coming back at all after that wild mechanics overhaul is impressive
33AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:35
Kanemoto's form is coming along
A comeback's close
34AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:35
Sponsor money has arriiiived!!!
35AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:35
Well, benching Ohtani at this point basically means elimination anyway, so using him just to dodge the blame makes sense
Besides, it's true that Ohtani has final say on whether he plays or not
36AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:36
Roberts: 'Uh, um, Mr. Ohtani. You don't seem to be in great form, so how about starting on the bench for now? 😅'
Ottosho: 'Baseba! Baseba! Me play game🤤'
Roberts: 'Haha! Understood!!'
He's onto something, so he's starting 😭🤮
40AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:37
Shohei: 'Bankai!' (Bleach reference)

So he's finally unleashing it
Wonder what it's called
41AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:37
Tried to grab Roberts by the collar
49AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:44
What does that even mean
'onto something'?
51AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:45
Re: #49
Maybe he's onto the trick of drawing catcher's-interference calls lol
70AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:59
Does he have dirt on someone or what?

Re: #70
The Dodgers run on Ohtani money
71AnonymousOct 14, 2026 09:59
I bet he's getting ripped apart way worse by actual Dodgers fans over there than by us
88AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:08
Re: #71
Yeah he's genuinely getting roasted
Even local fans are calling Ohtani selfish
74AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:01
They're really starting a guy who's only 'maybe onto something' at DH in the postseason? When the series is basically slipping away?
78AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:03
Re: #74
Well, they made it this far thanks to Ohtani, so going down with him at the end seems fair enough

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Ohtani has been playing solely as a hitter this season, and after the Dodgers dropped the first two games of the NLCS at home, some had floated benching him from the starting lineup due to his batting slump. Manager Roberts has explained that, after talking it over with Ohtani, he decided to keep starting him out of respect for Ohtani’s own desire to play. On the thread, opinions split between those who see the ‘onto something’ comment as thin, unsubstantiated optimism, and those who feel that, having come this far, the team should stick with Ohtani to the end. It’s worth noting that comments like ‘the sponsors made a deposit’ are baseless jabs, not an actual stated reason for the decision. Between arguments over who’s to blame for the slump and whether continuing to start him is the right call, opinions remain split.
