Netflix Grabs Exclusive Rights to All of Spain’s 2030 World Cup Matches — 5ch: ‘Great, As Long As It’s Not on Free TV’

The story

On October 13, Netflix announced it had acquired the exclusive broadcast rights to all matches in Spain and Andorra, two of the co-host nations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The company also holds exclusive streaming rights for the US and Canada for the 2027 and 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cups. On 5ch, a debate broke out over just how far that ‘exclusive’ label extends, with posters pointing to reports that Spain’s national team matches, the semifinals, and the final will still air free on terrestrial TV — prompting a string of corrections. The thread also spiraled into a back-and-forth between soccer fans and baseball fans.

Netflix announced on the 13th that it has acquired the exclusive broadcast rights to all matches of the FIFA World Cup 2030 in Spain and Andorra.

Netflix, which operates one of the world’s largest video streaming platforms, revealed that in addition to live coverage of every match in the tournament, it plans to stream pre- and post-match programming, daily highlights on match days, and special programs ahead of the tournament’s start.

Furthermore, Netflix also holds exclusive streaming rights in the United States and Canada for the FIFA Women’s World Cups to be held in 2027 and 2031. It also announced plans to stream the draw ceremony for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027, scheduled for December 11 this year.

If it's not going to air on terrestrial or BS, I'm thrilled.
4AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:23
This is great. Netflix really is the most reliable option, no question.

Re: #4
No way lol
All I picture is them outsourcing it to subcontractors lol
6AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:24
Whoever wants to watch it can just pay to watch it themselves.

Seriously, don't need soccer.
11AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:26
Re: #6
Don't need sports in general
Make it all pay-per-view
16AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:27
Re: #6
All 8 billion people on Earth already decided baseball ('yakyuu') was unnecessary — that's why it got permanently booted out of the Olympics, the world's great sporting festival, as an official event. So who cares.
7AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:24
Unless you're one of those live-thread commentators, you really don't need an NHK subscription.
10AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:26
They were saying young people don't watch soccer at all anymore
Looks like there'll be even fewer chances to watch it now
20AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:27
Re: #10
People just don't watch baseball ('yakyuu') to begin with, that's all
12AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:26
I thought Europe had laws against exclusive broadcast rights for sports events — guess Spain's different?
13AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:26
They'll probably make only the Japan matches pay-per-view lmaooo
14AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:26
So are the matches held in Portugal or Morocco covered by someone else…?
22AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:28
Answered my own question — it's just Spain and Andorra

So the popular matches obviously still get terrestrial coverage, that's all this is

Re: #33
Even Netflix has to give ground there, I guess
23AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:28
Seriously?
Young people are already drifting away from soccer more and more, and doing this is just going to speed that up
25AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:29
Re: #23
In America, soccer kicked baseball ('yakyuu') and basketball to the curb

World Cup final: US viewership hits an all-time high of 63 million! Popularity exploding, far surpassing the MLB and NBA Finals ★2

This isn't even about Japan
71AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:43
Re: #61
Well, broadcast rights differ by country
I'd like Netflix for Japan too, but maybe it'll be U-NEXT's turn next time
72AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:43
Re: #68
Can't you read the word 'exclusive'?
80AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:46
Re: #76
It says exclusive, so it's exclusive
Or is this 'exclusive' a lie?
83AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:47
Some idiot's gotten the wrong idea lol
The 2030 World Cup is co-hosted by Spain and several other countries
They only got the broadcast rights for the matches played in Spain and Andorra
106AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:54
Re: #83
Why is it so easy to fool people…
84AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:47
If Ohtani's not playing, I wouldn't pay even 500 yen
90AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:48
Re: #84
Even if he is playing I'm still not paying lol
85AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:47
Re: #80
That's right
The Nikkan Sports article doesn't actually say 'exclusive'
89AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:48
Re: #85
Could Nikkan just have it wrong?
At the very least, if it's truly exclusive there shouldn't be any terrestrial broadcast
87AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:48
The J.League has an exclusive DAZN deal too, but it still airs on terrestrial TV like normal
It's different from the WBC, which for some reason got locked away completely
100AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:52
Re: #87
J.League games air on terrestrial TV all over the country pretty much every round
And ABEMA streams multiple matches too, including European ones, so there's plenty you can watch for free
Soccer fans who are tight on cash seem to get by just fine that way
91AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:49
Netflix should do this in Japan too
Their ad-supported monthly plan is already cheap at 890 yen — if they rolled out a 500-yen-a-month World Cup plan, tons of people would jump on it
And with Netflix you wouldn't have to worry about them tricking you into a year-long contract by fudging the plan details
99AnonymousOct 14, 2026 10:52
Re: #91
The broadcast rights fees are on a totally different scale than the WBC's, so there probably won't be many matches included in the base price
So if you want to watch every match, you'll likely need to pay extra

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The 2030 World Cup is an unusual tournament co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with additional matches in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay as part of a 100th-anniversary commemoration; broadcast rights are sold separately for each country or region. What Netflix acquired this time is only the rights for Spain and Andorra, but on the thread, a string of posts latched onto the word ‘exclusive’ alone and mistakenly assumed terrestrial broadcasts would vanish entirely. In reality, according to reports, Spain’s national team matches, the semifinals and final, and one match per round are still expected to be available free on terrestrial TV, meaning Netflix’s exclusivity only covers a portion of the matches. That correction then snowballed into a back-and-forth between soccer and baseball fans, who brought up the WBC’s streaming setup for comparison.
