  • Facial tattoos on celebs like Junji Urita and ‘Saikoro’ spark debate — 5ch: “Got it on a whim”

A thread titled “People with facial tattoos” popped up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. Names of celebrities and fighters with facial ink kept coming up one after another — Junji Urita, “Saikoro” (Dice), Ryusei Ashizawa, and others — with posters curious whether laser treatment can remove them and why anyone would go that far. A news article quoting Urita as saying he regrets his facial tattoo was also cited, and the thread debated whether removal is really possible and the mindset that leads teens to get inked on impulse.

It's not about tattoos being good or bad —
I'm just endlessly curious why someone would like a design so much they'd put it on permanently with no way to remove it

That's exactly me — in your teens you just can't think that clearly
I was totally obsessed with the little accent tattoos overseas artists have
and got mine on a whim

    Background and Points of Debate

In Japan, tattoos can still be grounds for being turned away from bathhouses and pools, and a facial tattoo is seen as an unusual choice even among fighters and some celebrities. Laser treatment can lighten tattoos, but fully erasing them is said to be difficult, and there are cases — like Junji Urita’s — where the person has publicly spoken about regretting it. The thread split over whether to accept it as a form of individuality or to chalk it up to a decision made in youthful impulsiveness, with curiosity about why people got them and skepticism toward the mindset behind choosing a design that can never be removed forming the core of the discussion. Worth noting: as some pointed out, teardrop tattoos overseas can signify the number of people someone has killed — a very different context from the purely decorative intent assumed in Japan.

  • “Niconico” Service for Switch to End — 5ch Reacts: “I Only Used My Switch for Niconico!”

It has been announced that the “Niconico” video streaming service available on Switch will end on March 31, 2027. The service has run for about 10 years since the Switch’s 2017 launch, and there are reportedly no plans to support it on the successor console, the Switch 2. On 5ch’s console/industry (geha) board, comments crossed over multiple threads: the declining trend in Niconico’s premium membership numbers, disappointment from users who valued the ad-free viewing experience, worries about the future of YouTube on Switch, and repeated concern over where the service itself is headed.

《Closing the curtain on roughly 10 years of service since the Switch launched in 2017. It was also announced that there are no plans to support the Switch 2.

    14AnonymousOct 13, 2026 20:15
It's easy to use precisely because there are no ads —
which is probably exactly why it's not coming to the Switch 2, and why it's ending.
    16AnonymousOct 13, 2026 20:15
    Forget the Switch angle —

Niconico's premium membership stood at 893,000 as of the end of June 2026. This is the first time the count has dropped below 900,000.
A year earlier (end of June 2025), membership was 994,000 — meaning it lost roughly 100,000 members in a single year.

    30AnonymousOct 13, 2026 20:25
Back in the 3DS days they were selling custom home menu themes made by famous Niconico composers and creators — it was definitely content that resonated with younger users.

Now it's a washed-up has-been, unrecognizable from what it used to be.
    32AnonymousOct 13, 2026 20:26
What's even the point of the Switch 2 as a portable gadget anyway?
    33AnonymousOct 13, 2026 20:31
Niconico's turned into a place for watching anime and reading manga, but you can't read manga on Switch, and now that phones and PCs cover everything just fine, it's served its purpose.
    35AnonymousOct 13, 2026 20:35
Who's even watching Niconico anymore, seriously?
    41AnonymousOct 13, 2026 20:38

    Re: #96
Probably the same reason they're cutting off YouTube too.

Background and Key Points of This Thread

What’s actually ending here isn’t Niconico itself, but the viewing feature within the Switch app. The service launched alongside the Switch in 2017 and is closing the curtain after roughly a decade. It was also revealed that there are no plans to bring it to the Switch 2, and many posters in the thread pointed out Nintendo’s apparent reluctance to support video streaming on its new hardware. Niconico’s own membership trends also came up for discussion, with figures cited showing premium membership at 893,000 as of the end of June 2026 — down about 100,000 from 994,000 a year earlier, and the first time the count has dropped below 900,000. What stands out about this thread is how the timing of the membership decline and the end of Switch support became intertwined, with posters voicing concern both over Niconico’s own future and over the Switch’s fading momentum.

  • Reactions Pour In Over 2027 Winter Anime Lineup: ‘5ch Says, “This Lineup Is Insane!”‘

A thread titled “2027 Winter Anime Roundup,” posted on 5ch’s Entertainment/Sports News+ board, compiled information on new and rerun anime starting next January. Alongside the final arc of the hugely popular “Golden Kamuy,” Season 2 of “The Fable,” and Season 2 of “SAKAMOTO DAYS,” it was also revealed that the long-running manga “Historie” is finally getting an anime adaptation, drawing excited replies. At the same time, some commenters complained that with so many shows, it’s hard to choose what to watch, others questioned why so many isekai (reincarnated-in-another-world) titles keep getting adapted, and there was discussion over why reruns make up such a large share of the lineup.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The 2027 winter anime season kicks off in January, and this thread was sparked by new information reported by Animate Times, including “Akane-banashi” Season 2. Particular attention went to “Historie,” Hitoshi Iwaaki’s long-running and still-unfinished manga; since the source material hasn’t concluded, some commenters worried the anime could catch up to and overtake it — a different situation from anime sequels based on already-completed source material. As for why reruns feature so prominently, some commenters speculated it’s meant to build the habit of watching the weekly TV broadcast, even as binge-watching whole seasons via streaming becomes the norm — though this is just viewer speculation, not an official explanation. On the question of why isekai-reincarnation shows keep getting churned out despite audiences seemingly being tired of them, some wondered how shows that don’t even crack the streaming charts manage to turn a profit — a reminder that anime production-committee financing and revenue structures are often invisible to ordinary viewers.

A thread titled “Isn’t she just too cute?” about AKB48’s Momoka Ito blew up on a 5ch idol board. Ito, formerly with Stardust Promotion and already drawing attention during her run on the drama “Hoshikuzu Telepath” (Stardust Telepath), has been on a roll — her latest social media post hit 30,000 likes almost the moment it went up — and some in the thread argued she’s generating more buzz than members of the Sakamichi groups (Nogizaka46, Sakurazaka46, etc.). Background and key points of this story

Momoka Ito came up through Stardust Promotion and joined AKB48 after appearing in the drama “Hoshikuzu Telepath” (Stardust Telepath). Talent with a different background from existing members suddenly going viral on social media has been a notable pattern in the female idol world lately, and hitting 30,000 likes this time is one more example of it. What split opinion in the thread was the gap between “popularity by the numbers” — reaction counts on social media — and the more traditional idol-fan emphasis on looks and “idol-like” presence. Note that while one post claimed AKB48 is now a strong contender for a slot on Kohaku Uta Gassen, this is speculation discussed within 5ch, not an official announcement.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Isn’t AKB’s Momoka Ito-chan just way too cute?“.

  • Large-scale support for restaurant industry to be shelved — 5ch: “Takeout would be cheaper, though”

It was learned on the 13th that the government is coordinating to keep the consumption tax rate on restaurant dine-in at 10%, while lowering the rate on food products from 8% to 1% in April 2027. The restaurant industry had requested demand-boosting measures such as issuing meal vouchers, warning that the widening tax gap could reduce customer traffic, but the government has leaned toward forgoing large-scale, across-the-board support, citing differing impacts by business type. It also signaled plans to offset reduced take-home income for small and micro-scale farmers through cash benefits, and the differing treatment between industries is expected to draw opposition pushback in Diet deliberations. On 5ch threads, distrust over pandemic-era support measures fueled comments like “we don’t need support now,” with opinions also divided over points such as alcohol being excluded from the tax cut and labor shortages.

It was learned on the 13th that, regarding the consumption tax cut on food and beverages, the government is coordinating to forgo demand-boosting measures such as issuing meal vouchers that had been requested by the restaurant industry, which will keep its 10% rate. While the widening tax-rate gap with boxed lunches and prepared foods—dropping from 8% to 1%—risks reducing customer traffic, the government has leaned toward judging that large-scale support is not appropriate given that the impact varies by business type. In deliberations over the related bill submitted to the Diet on the 9th, opposition parties are expected to push back and demand more robust measures.

In the tax reform outline decided in September, the government stated explicitly that it would “assess which business types are affected and implement appropriate support” for the restaurant industry. It plans to focus on encouraging business diversification—such as introducing takeout options and automation—and will finalize the details of support measures by year-end, when the initial fiscal 2027 budget is compiled.

As for support for businesses affected by the tax cut, the government is leaning toward using cash benefits to cover the drop in take-home income for small and micro-scale farmers. It appears the treatment of restaurants and farmers will differ significantly.

    Denmark 25% (food 25%)
    Norway 25% (food 15%)
    Finland 24% (food 14%)
    Japan 10% (food 8%)

Japan's consumption tax is already low, so there's no need for a tax cut or abolition

Fools say the weak should just get culled without a second thought —
when you see restaurants overflowing all over central Tokyo, it's easy to think "things would be fine even if quite a few close down."

But that's not the whole story: food wholesalers that supply restaurants, and everyone else who does business with the restaurant industry, would all take a hit too.

There was actually an expert at the national council who argued that places like Yoshinoya and other fast-food-priced restaurants aren't exactly a luxury, so they should get the 1% rate too. Though I guess it's fine since takeout will get the tax cut anyway.

Yoshinoya currently charges 8% for takeout, so it's 2% cheaper

But McDonald's makes takeout the same price as eating in

    Re: #304
Don't you know restaurants mostly use processed and frozen goods from China?
If anything, it's the anti-Japan restaurant industry that's been destroying Japanese farmers

Background and key points of this topic

Starting in April 2027, the consumption tax on food products will drop from 8% to 1%, while the rate on dine-in restaurant meals will remain unchanged at 10%. There are concerns that the widening gap with takeout and prepared foods will hurt restaurant foot traffic, and the government’s September tax reform outline stated it would provide “appropriate support after assessing the impact,” but it has leaned toward forgoing large-scale, across-the-board support given that the impact varies by business type. Meanwhile, cash benefits to offset reduced take-home income are being considered for small and micro-scale farmers affected by the tax cut, and the differing treatment between industries looks set to become a point of contention in upcoming Diet deliberations. On the thread, frustration over fraud and profiteering tied to pandemic-era business continuation subsidies and shortened-hours cooperation payments fueled widespread comments of “we don’t need support now,” while structural issues like labor shortages and reliance on imported ingredients also came up. One easily misunderstood point: alcohol is excluded from this tax-rate cut and will continue to be taxed at 10%.

※This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (News Express+) thread “Large-scale support for restaurant industry to be shelved — 10% consumption tax maintained, fears of customer attrition.”

  • Japan’s GDP Set to Slip to 6th in the World Next Year — 5ch Reacts: ‘A Small Number Definitely Means You’re Poor’

The IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook, released on October 12, projected that Japan’s nominal GDP will be overtaken by both India and the UK in 2027, dropping Japan to 6th place globally. The previous forecast, from April, had the UK overtaking Japan in 2029, so this timeline has been moved up. On 5ch’s Breaking News+ thread, posters pointed to Japan’s reliance on car exports and tourism — both propped up by the weak yen — as a factor in the ranking slide, while others noted that Japan has already been overtaken by South Korea in per-capita GDP, sparking a split in opinion over how to judge the true strength of Japan’s economy.

Japan’s GDP Projected to Fall to ‘World’s 6th Largest’ as India and UK Overtake It Next Year… Revealed in IMF ‘World Economic Outlook’ : Yomiuri Shimbun

[Washington — Yukinobu Sakamoto, Bangkok — Seiji Tabata] Japan’s nominal gross domestic product (GDP) is now projected to fall to 6th place worldwide in 2027, overtaken by both India and the United Kingdom. This was revealed in the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) latest World Economic Outlook, published on the 12th. In the previous forecast from April, the UK was expected to overtake Japan in 2029, but that timeline now appears to have moved up.

And maintaining that infrastructure is becoming harder and harder

Background and Debate Points on This Topic

Rankings based on dollar-converted nominal GDP are heavily shaped by exchange rates, not just the underlying size of each economy. In the thread, it wasn’t widely acknowledged that Japan’s ranking drop reflects not only a shrinking real economy but also significant erosion in value from the weak yen. The IMF’s World Economic Outlook is revised twice a year, in April and October, and the core of this report is that the timeline for the UK overtaking Japan has moved up from the previously forecast 2029 to 2027. In the thread, voices expressing alarm — citing Japan’s heavy reliance on the auto and tourism industries and the fact that it has already been overtaken by South Korea in per-capita GDP — clashed with those arguing that GDP size alone doesn’t measure a nation’s prosperity. However, the question of how much the exchange-rate effect should be discounted when reading into the rankings wasn’t discussed much.

  • VIVANT’s amateurish hacker-typing scene draws fire — 5ch: ‘This cliché hasn’t changed in 20 years’

The “typing scene” featuring the genius hacker character in the drama VIVANT has become a hot topic among viewers. According to an article by Josei Jishin, the actress herself revealed what went on behind the scenes of that performance. On 5ch’s Geisupo Sokuhou+ thread, posters traded opinions on how unrealistic the keyboard-tapping motion looked, as well as on the genre staple of showing a PC screen with a mysterious custom-made UI. Some voiced exasperation, saying “that depiction hasn’t changed in like 20 years,” while others shrugged it off as just one of those standard drama conventions — and the discussion expanded from this one niche detail about typing all the way to debates about the show’s overall quality.

Background and key points of this discussion

VIVANT was a major TBS drama that became a hit starring Masato Sakai and Hiroshi Abe, and the “rapid-fire typing” performance by the Mongolia-set hacker character has been criticized as “not how real hacking looks” ever since it first aired. The thread also featured comments like “shows like this always have some mystery PC with a custom UI” and “that typing depiction has been going on for like 20 years,” reflecting a half-resigned acceptance of it as a shared “genre convention” with cop dramas and special-forces stories. Where opinions split was over whether to view this device as “cheesy but acceptable visual shorthand” or as “an outdated technique that no longer lands with Reiwa-era viewers.” The part where the term “blind touch” itself was flagged as discriminatory may seem abrupt without the background: since the word evokes visual impairment, it has increasingly been replaced in recent years by “touch typing.” The Josei Jishin article behind this thread is itself about the actress revealing the behind-the-scenes story of the performance, but the thread’s interest expanded heavily into a broader debate over the scene’s realism.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Mobile battery fires are often triggered by internal lithium-ion battery degradation or deformation from being dropped, and there have been incidents even with PSE-certified products (Japan’s official electrical-safety mark). In its warning issued at the end of last year, Chofu City did not ban charging itself — it only banned leaving the office or one’s desk while a battery was charging. This nuance was pointed out later in the thread with comments noting “it’s not a charging ban,” a detail easy to miss from the headline alone. Opinions in the thread split between criticism of using city electricity to charge personal devices, and a more permissive view that takes into account how commonly phones are used at work for quick lookups or as calculators. A reprimand is the lightest category of disciplinary action for local government employees, and the fact that the fire itself resulted from negligence rather than intent likely factored into the leniency of the punishment.

  • Ramen Jiro Kyoto Store’s Customer Service Scandal Rages On Despite Official Denial

A firestorm broke out after a customer at Ramen Jiro’s Kyoto location posted on X that a staff member had yelled at them. The Kyoto store responded on its official X account, saying that after checking with staff, “no such conduct took place,” and stated it would not tolerate yelling at customers who had done nothing wrong — but even after that statement, more and more people online reported receiving the same kind of treatment, and the controversy shows no sign of dying down. On 5ch, a thread saw opinions ranging from the taste of Jiro-style ramen and its customer base to debates over who was really in the right, the staff or the customers.

Popular ramen chain “Ramen Jiro Kyoto Store” has found itself embroiled in an online controversy over how its staff treat customers. After a customer posted on X that they’d been yelled at by an employee, the post spread rapidly, drawing heavy criticism of the staff’s attitude.

In response, the Kyoto store stated on its official X account that after checking with staff, “no such conduct took place.” It said it would continue investigating the facts, while making clear it would not tolerate suddenly yelling at customers who had done nothing wrong.

Even after the store’s explanation, however, voices online reporting similar treatment — and general dissatisfaction with the staff’s conduct — have kept piling up. Why won’t this controversy settle down?

You walked into a thug hangout on your own two feet and now you're complaining it's rough around the edges?

Going somewhere normal people wouldn't set foot, then complaining about it, is just backwards — people with sense shouldn't go near the place, and if you really must go, go in with your eyes open

This is exactly why Japanese tourists get a bad reputation abroad too
Being a customer at a Japanese-run shop themselves, they're fine

First-timers have no way of knowing the rules
Shouldn't the shop be doing more to inform people?

Background and Key Points of This Controversy

Ramen Jiro is known for its distinctive ordering ritual, called the “call,” along with a set of unspoken rules among its regulars (“Jirolians”) — a structure that makes it easy for first-time customers unfamiliar with the etiquette to clash with staff. This latest controversy pits the customer’s claim of being yelled at squarely against the store’s statement that “no such conduct took place,” and without objective evidence like security footage being made public, it’s hard for outsiders to judge who’s telling the truth. The rise of the term “customer harassment” (kasuhara) in recent years reflects real struggles in the restaurant industry with dealing with abusive customers — but there are also concerns that the term is being used as cover to justify overly aggressive responses from the staff side. The discussion thread also branched out into Jiro-style ramen’s particular customer base and its sodium content, revealing a complexity that doesn’t boil down to a simple question of whether the shop or the customer is at fault.

  • Shampoo Hat’s Koi Announces Oropharyngeal Cancer Diagnosis, Pausing Activities at Stage 1

Koi (50), of the comedy duo Shampoo Hat, revealed on October 13 via his own YouTube channel that he has oropharyngeal cancer and will be pausing his activities for treatment. He also disclosed that he first noticed a lump in his neck in August and underwent testing at a cancer center in Osaka. Reactions on the thread were split between surprise that the cancer was only “stage 1” despite the lump reportedly being big enough to notice just by looking, speculation that his lack of energy in the months before the announcement may have been due to concerns about possible metastasis, confusion over conflicting reports on whether HPV infection or drinking/smoking was cited as the cause of the pharyngeal cancer, and discussion of who might fill in for him on the horse-racing show he appears on.

Koi (50), of the comedy duo Shampoo Hat, updated his YouTube channel “Koi-chan Paradise” on the 13th to announce that he will be pausing his activities to undergo treatment for oropharyngeal cancer.

On August 18, Koi revealed on social media that he had a lump in his neck, and in a video posted on the 24th he reported, “It’s been decided that I’ll be getting tested on the morning of Friday the 28th at a cancer center in Osaka.” He explained that his regular doctor had told him he should get checked at a larger hospital.

Regarding the test, he said, “I feel like I can accept whatever the result is,” and shared his state of mind: “Of course, there’s still a part of me that’s a bit optimistic, thinking I’ll probably be fine. But, well, I am going to the hospital with the worst-case scenario in mind, just in case.”

Checked the online news — it only lists drinking and smoking as the cause. Maybe they're leaving out HPV to spare his reputation? Dunno though.

    Re: #109
Koi apparently drinks a ton, so that's probably more likely the actual cause.

    Re: #117
Thinking about it normally, yeah, probably Tetsuji.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Oropharyngeal cancer develops at the base of the tongue or the upper pharynx. It has traditionally been attributed mainly to drinking and smoking, but in recent years a link to HPV (human papillomavirus) infection has also been noted. The thread’s confusion between what was reported and popular assumptions stems from the fact that both of these causal pathways coexist — there’s no way to determine which one actually applies here beyond what Koi himself or the medical institution discloses. Also, “stage 1” is a staging classification based on tumor size and spread, which doesn’t necessarily correspond to how large a swelling looks from the outside, so it isn’t unusual for a case with a visibly large lump to still be caught early with a good prognosis. The multiple posts noting that he seemed unwell in the months before the announcement likely overlap with the period he spent waiting on detailed test results, including whether metastasis had occurred.
