  • Foreign Fan Hunting for a New ‘Oshi’ to Replace Berryz Kōbō Set to Appear on ‘Why Did You Come to Japan?’ — 5ch Reacts: ‘A Berryz Otaku for the Show’s 600th Episode, lol’

TV Tokyo’s “Why Did You Come to Japan?” announced an upcoming episode following a foreign fan who traveled to Japan in search of a “new favorite” (oshi) to replace the now-disbanded popular idol group Berryz Kōbō, setting off a buzz on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. The preview also showed the fan heading to a massive idol festival with roughly 1,200 groups performing, and the thread filled with guesses about his true identity — “Isn’t his current favorite Juice=Juice?” and “He seems like a fan of Reina or Ocha (Kanami Ishiguri)” among them. Since a Hello! Project concert was held the same night at Toyota Arena, some posters also wondered whether the schedules overlapped.

Those aren't real Hello! Project otaku

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“Why Did You Come to Japan?” is a TV Tokyo information-variety show built around following foreign visitors to Japan. This episode features a foreign fan who came to Japan looking for a “new favorite” to replace Berryz Kōbō, and the preview also teases his attendance at a massive idol festival with roughly 1,200 participating groups. Since Berryz Kōbō disbanded in 2015, the thread’s main focus became speculating which current Hello! Project group the fan would end up gravitating toward. There was also discussion of the fact that a Hello! Project concert (Harocon) was held at Toyota Arena the same night as the broadcast, raising questions about whether the festival and concert schedules overlapped, and whether the fan actually managed to attend Harocon himself. Because the broadcast blurred the fan’s face, his identity was never confirmed, and the discussion ended without resolving whether he was the same person previously featured as a fan of Maria Makino or Juice=Juice.

  • Rina Ise’s Birthday Event Venue Shrinks by 300 Seats: 1,200 Down to 900

The venue for a birthday event featuring ANGERME’s Rina Ise has been changed from Meguro Persimmon Hall’s Main Hall (1,200 seats) to Hulic Hall Tokyo (900 seats) — a 300-seat cut that became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. Posters noted that “last time there were so many empty seats you could buy up to two same-day tickets,” fueling the view that the downsizing was simply a response to unsold seats rather than a sign of declining popularity. Others pointed to an industry practice where booking multiple venue dates together brings a discount, leaving the thread awash in speculation.

    25AnonymousOct 19, 2026 18:23
So the biggest money-maker in ANGERME is… Hulic (the venue company)?
    27AnonymousOct 19, 2026 18:24
Kawashima's event being at Hulic too is probably because bulk bookings get a discount. Such a cheapskate agency.
    29AnonymousOct 19, 2026 18:25
    Re: #27
So Juice=Juice's Kawashima is the reason?
    41AnonymousOct 19, 2026 18:41
Oda and Akiyama seem to have had some serious connections, so now that they're out of the picture maybe Hello! Project is winding things down. Juice=Juice could earn however much and it'd all just get donated to Kumamoto anyway — Up-Front might just not have the motivation left anymore.
    42AnonymousOct 19, 2026 18:41
    Re: #41
Isn't it only the fading ANGERME that's winding down?
    45AnonymousOct 19, 2026 18:45
Maybe the agency's finally realizing they've been wasting money on oversized venues.
    49AnonymousOct 19, 2026 18:47
    Re: #45
For tours, appearances matter, so they'll use a venue too big for their actual draw even if it doesn't fill up. But birthday events only pull a super-niche crowd, so they probably prioritized profit this time.
    60AnonymousOct 19, 2026 18:53
I don't think Tsubaki Factory wota care about any of this, though.
    69AnonymousOct 19, 2026 18:55
Sometimes they book a venue so big it makes you go "huh?", and sometimes the opposite — this time it just happened to land on the smaller side.
    75AnonymousOct 19, 2026 18:57
900 seats is still fine, honestly. It's not like they downgraded to a blimp.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Thread participants shared information that ANGERME’s most recent solo event failed to fill seats, with same-day tickets left unsold — cited as the leading theory behind this venue downsizing. However, some pointed out that venue size depends not only on popularity but also on contractual factors, such as discounts for booking multiple shows together, making it premature to read the smaller capacity as straightforward proof of declining popularity. The discussion branched out from there, with some arguing that Rina Ise’s individual popularity should be considered separately from the group’s overall popularity, while others noted a possible connection to Juice=Juice’s Kawashima using the same venue around the same time — the debate never moved past speculation.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Rina Ise’s Birthday Event Venue Loses 300 Seats: Meguro Persimmon Hall Main Hall [1,200 seats] → Hulic Hall Tokyo [900 seats].”

  • CC2 President Matsuyama: ‘Twice in 30 Years, We’ve Had a Project Canceled or Development Reassigned’ — Remark Sparks Discussion

Hiroshi Matsuyama, president of game development studio CyberConnect2 (CC2), sparked discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board after remarking in a Famitsu interview that “in our 30-year history, there have been exactly two occasions where the same client canceled a project or reassigned development to another company.” Phrases in the remark such as “highly detailed artwork” and “a building that looked somewhat familiar” led many to speculate he was referring to the development shake-up around Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY VII Remake. The thread split between posters criticizing Square Enix’s track record of harshly cutting contractors, and those defending it as simply par for the course in contract development.

To be clear, this is simply something that, looking back over CyberConnect2’s 30-year history, has happened exactly twice.

Our assistant staff drew an incredibly high-detail rendering of a building that might look somewhat familiar, so it may seem like the client in question was the company behind that building — but I’m sure that’s just your imagination (please, just don’t think about it too hard).

As for the “canceled project,” it was essentially an unannounced title, so that’s information only the parties involved could possibly know.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

CyberConnect2 is a major contract development studio known for work on the .hack series and the CG for the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure games; this remark comes from a Famitsu interview. It’s worth noting that President Hiroshi Matsuyama never named a specific title himself — the theory that he was referring to FF7 Remake spread purely as speculation among 5ch posters. In contract development, it’s hardly unusual for a client to cancel a project or switch developers at its own discretion. The thread’s central divide was between those who argued Square Enix is especially harsh in how it cuts contractors, and those who countered that this is simply something that can happen to anyone who takes on contract work.

  • Shimakura Rika’s YouTube Views Hit 10x an Ex-Hello!Project Idol’s — 5ch Buzzes

It became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hello!Project board that former Hello!Project member Shimakura Rika’s Showa-era kayo (retro Japanese pop) cover videos are getting ten times the views of similar covers posted by Ogata Yuu, a “yame-halo” (fan slang for an idol who left Hello!Project). The thread included screenshots showing the like counts had flipped in Shimakura’s favor, and while the low comment counts fueled speculation that older viewers and non-fans searching for Showa kayo songs were driving the traffic, opinions were split on whether the view gap came down to Shimakura’s own popularity or simply the fame of the songs she chose to cover.

But the like counts have flipped.

Having a clear target audience is nice.
And she gets to do what she actually wants too.
    24AnonymousOct 19, 2026 17:09
Comments and likes just reflect hype inside the fandom.
The point is Shimakura's videos are being watched by people outside the 'village' too.
    26AnonymousOct 19, 2026 17:10
Probably just older folks searching by song title and stumbling onto it.

I doubt Ogata Yuu's views would climb anywhere near this high even singing the same song.

Rika-sama used to sit around 10k views — when did it blow up like this, lol.
    30AnonymousOct 19, 2026 17:21

Why did Sato's 'Saudade' cover blow up like that?

Why doesn't Karin's cover of that famous song get any traction?
    41AnonymousOct 19, 2026 17:29
Yeah, with Rika-sama's looks, Showa-era kayo would definitely hit home for middle-aged guys.

Shimakura → her "Odoriko" cover is a hit
Takase → her solo live is so in-demand both sessions have lottery losers
Yuu → her bar event sold out in general sale
    54AnonymousOct 19, 2026 17:43
I'm not too knowledgeable about this myself,

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Yame-halo” is fan slang for a former Hello!Project trainee or member who graduated or left the agency, and Ogata Yuu is cited in the thread as one such example. The core difficulty in this discussion is separating out whether Shimakura Rika’s high view count comes from her own popularity or from the search-traffic pull of the famous Showa-era song titles she chooses to cover. The low comment count and the reversal in like counts are raised as evidence of “traffic from outside the fandom,” but this is only speculation within the thread, not data that directly shows who the viewers actually are. Some posters also pointed to cases like the Murashita Kōzō cover, suggesting that searches for that specific song title may be driving traffic — meaning the view count could be shaped more by how well-known the song is than by Shimakura’s own ability. A point readers might easily misread is treating this view-count gap as simply “Shimakura is 10 times more popular,” when posters in the thread repeatedly note that the relationship between song choice and song fame hasn’t actually been disentangled.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hello!Project board) thread “Did You Know Shimakura Rika Gets 10x the YouTube Views of Yame-halo (Ogata Yuu)?“.

  • Ise Suzuran reveals Moe Kamikoryo showed up at her concert — 5ch: ‘Mocchi apparently guessed Masaharu Fukuyama’

Angerme leader Suzuran Ise has revealed that fellow Hello! Project member Moe Kamikoryo (of Juice=Juice) made a surprise visit to one of her concerts. To keep it secret until the show ended, she only told the other members that “a certain big-name celebrity is here” — and the first name member Mocchi guessed was Masaharu Fukuyama. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, the thread lit up both over the comedy of that wildly off-base guess and over just how far up the “big name” scale Kamikoryo really ranks compared to other idols.

Calling someone from your own circle a 'big-name celebrity,' really?

    Background and talking points

Angerme, led by Suzuran Ise, and Juice=Juice, which Moe Kamikoryo belongs to, are both Hello! Project groups, so members frequently cross paths at events and shows. What split opinion on 5ch was how to compare the groups’ name recognition and drawing power — posts arguing both sides piled up one after another. Masaharu Fukuyama is a nationally famous singer-actor on an entirely different level from a ‘big name’ within the idol industry itself, and it’s that very gap with Mocchi’s guess that makes the episode funny. The thread also included some unverified claims about Moe Kamikoryo’s personal beliefs and relationships, but since these have no backing, this article does not cover them.

※This article excerpts and summarizes the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Suzuran Ise: ‘I kept it secret that Kamikoryo-san was coming to the concert and told the members a big-name celebrity was here — Mocchi said “Masaharu Fukuyama?!”‘“.

  • Why Dragon Quest IX Gets Called the Worst Game in the Series

Released on the Nintendo DS, Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies put adventure-sharing via StreetPass and multiplayer front and center, and at launch it logged some of the best domestic sales in the series’ history. At the same time, opinions on it within the series are sharply divided, and a thread on 5ch’s Nanademo Jikkyou G (a general “let’s-react-live” board) debated the question of why 9 gets called the weakest entry in the series. Many posters pointed to a thin story, characterless party members, and graphics that fell short, while others pushed back by citing the StreetPass experience of the era and praising the supporting cast — making clear that reactions depend heavily on when and how someone played it.

    1AnonymousOct 19, 2026 15:42
Even the diehard fans can't name a single thing that's actually fun about it — all they've got is sales-figure bragging and "you have no friends" jabs.
Its popularity came mostly from being a DS communication gadget, not from being a solid mainline Dragon Quest game.
    Graphics.
    4AnonymousOct 19, 2026 15:44
    Simply put, the story's boring.
It's bad enough that you'd think Horii (the series' creator) handed the script off to a ghostwriter.

By the time you get to 9, aside from the broad outline, it's mostly staff writing it, not Horii himself.

9 only worked because of StreetPass.

7 crammed in way too much story — so much that the remake actually cut parts of it.
They should've used that leftover material for 9 instead.

    Re: #15

Without StreetPass it's a pretty hollow game.
Though online infrastructure has come a long way since then, so they could probably build something enjoyable in a different form than StreetPass.

It was a game you could only enjoy because of the environment at the time.

    33AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:02
My impression is that 9 and 10 drove the fans away, and 11 brought them back by returning to the series' roots.
    54AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:23

11 was basically doing the "this — this is exactly what I wanted" thing, right.
    41AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:10
You don't get attached to a single character.
There's no story development or content to make up for that.

Your party members can change their looks and jobs however you want, so you never get attached to any of them.

Meanwhile 3 never had that problem.
    113AnonymousOct 19, 2026 17:14
    Re: #112
Well obviously having infinite combinations is going to feel completely different from fixed, job-specific looks.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Released in 2009 for the Nintendo DS, Dragon Quest IX sold itself on letting players freely change party members’ appearance and job class, alongside StreetPass-based item trading and rescue features. That was an unusual design choice for the series — while it logged some of the best domestic sales in series history at the time, it draws frequent criticism when measured against more traditional RPG yardsticks like narrative arc and attachment to fixed characters. What split the thread was how to separate those huge sales figures from an assessment of the game itself — opinions diverged over whether to factor in the StreetPass-dependent, platform-specific experience of that era. One point worth noting, though not explicitly raised in the thread’s replies, is that taking high sales at face value as a measure of quality can be misleading.

  • Comedian Nozomu Iwao Vents Over Convenience Store Parking Hogs: ‘Should I Go Yell at Them to Move?’

Nozomu Iwao of the comedy duo Football Hour revealed his frustration with customers who park for long stretches in convenience store lots while staring at their phones, during the October 17 episode of the YouTube show “Zakkuri YouTube.” His comment that he feels like marching over and shouting “Move it, dammit!” at customers who won’t budge even when the lot is packed was reported by sirabee.com and sparked a reaction on 5ch. The thread split between critics insisting “only the store owner has the right to say that” and others sympathizing from their own frustrating parking-lot experiences, with plenty of posts speculating about why customers linger in their cars for so long.

Nozomu Iwao of the comedy duo Football Hour appeared on the YouTube channel “Zakkuri YouTube” on the 17th.

He let loose his frustration about “a certain car” he keeps running into in convenience store parking lots.

Iwao often stops at convenience stores while driving. Depending on the time of day, the lot gets so crowded that finding even a single open space isn’t rare, and that’s when his frustration kicks in toward the customers who just sit in their cars.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

It’s worth keeping in mind, as the article itself notes, that Iwao’s comment was made during a talk segment on a YouTube show, not an actual confrontation with a customer. Convenience store parking lots are managed property, and some stores post signs restricting long-term parking or idling, but such friction tends to get treated as a dispute between customers, with handling varying store by store. The thread split between a principle-based view — “only the store has the right to say that” — and agreement rooted in real experience, like “I’ve actually been stuck because the lot was full.” Posts speculating about reasons for lingering in the car for a long time — taking a break, timing a pickup or drop-off, sleeping overnight — were also prominent, and alongside debate over the remark itself, there was a mix of posts weighing in on Iwao’s personal character and his past behavior on other shows.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geisupo Sokuho+) thread “Nozomu Iwao’s ‘Frustration’ with Convenience Store Customers: ‘For people staring at their phones in their cars, I feel like going over and telling them to move, dammit!’.”

  • Digital Agency Reveals Compatible Android Phones for My Number Card App — 5ch: “Why Is the Pixel 7 the Only One Left Out?”

The Digital Agency has announced which Android smartphones support the My Number Card’s digital ID functions on-device. The “attribute certification feature,” which can stand in for physically showing ID, is limited to select Pixel and Motorola models, prompting questions on the forum like “why is the Pixel 7 the only one excluded?” along with technical discussion about differences in the secure-element hardware used for authentication. Some pointed out that the iPhone already supports an equivalent feature.

    Re: #1
This is confusing. The "electronic certificate" is the thing tied to that 6-plus-digit My Number password, while the "attribute certification feature" is basically the app version of the My Number Card itself. So having the attribute certification feature means you skip the hassle of tapping your card or entering a password on things like Mynaportal.
    133AnonymousOct 19, 2026 15:50
    Re: #130
I wouldn't be inconvenienced even without this.
    137AnonymousOct 19, 2026 15:52
    Re: #130
Logging into Mynaportal or pulling a residency certificate at a convenience store is handled by the electronic certificate (and that's already possible today, for that matter). The attribute certification feature, as I understand it, lets you present ID (via IC-chip reading) or verify your identity in an app without needing the physical My Number Card.
    160AnonymousOct 19, 2026 15:58
The old electronic certificate for Android phones used the FeliCa SE, but this new Android My Number Card feature uses StrongBox instead and doesn't touch the FeliCa SE — so technically it should work on pretty much any phone.

The catch is it's a whitelist system: it only works once the Digital Agency's database is updated to include your model, so if it's not on the list, you're out of luck.
    190AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:11
    Re: #160
So they dropped the FeliCa-only restriction and moved to a global standard. If manufacturers submit test results and the Digital Agency approves and adds the model to the list, then in theory almost any Android 9-or-later device could work.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Putting the My Number Card on a smartphone involves two separate features: the “electronic certificate,” used for things like logging into Mynaportal, and the “attribute certification feature,” which lets you skip carrying the physical card when presenting ID. The list published this time covers the latter. As posters on the forum noted, the older Android electronic certificate relied on FeliCa’s secure element, which limited it to FeliCa-compatible phones — but the new attribute certification feature switches to Google’s StrongBox, making it technically possible to broaden support to more devices. In practice, though, which models actually qualify still comes down to a whitelist system, where manufacturers must submit test results to the Digital Agency for each device to get registered. That’s likely why a phone like the Pixel 7 is missing from the list — not a technical limitation, but simply a registration process that hasn’t caught up yet.

  • Brighton Thrash Bitter Rivals 5-0, Mitoma Left Out — 5ch: ‘No Spot for Him Anymore’

In Matchweek 7 of the Premier League on the 18th, Brighton — home of Kaoru Mitoma — thrashed Crystal Palace, the club of Daichi Kamada, 5-0 at home. The fixture, dubbed the “M23 Derby” due to a rivalry dating back to the 1970s, saw Mitoma left out of the squad entirely as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury, while Kamada started. Brighton have been on a scoring spree, netting 23 goals in their last 7 matches, and the thread was divided over why the team is thriving despite key players being sidelined, as well as over what the future holds for Mitoma.

◆ Premier League Matchweek 7: Brighton 5-0 Crystal Palace (18th)

Brighton, home to Japan international midfielder Kaoru Mitoma, hosted Crystal Palace, home to Japan international midfielder Daichi Kamada and Japan international defender Takehiro Tomiyasu. Mitoma, still recovering from his hamstring injury, and the injured Tomiyasu were both left out of the squad. Kamada, however, started as the undisputed regular he has become.

The clash between the two sides, whose rivalry has simmered since the 1970s, is known as the “M23 Derby” — a fiery affair despite the clubs not even being geographically close. While the fixture is always expected to be a tight, hard-fought contest, this time it was Brighton, who have been piling up goals all season, who ran out emphatic 5-0 winners.

And quietly, Ayari's goal was basically a deflection off Kanbo too, so that's effectively another gift goal.

Even when they slip up, the whole team is committed to never letting the opponent transition, so once Brighton win the ball back everyone piles forward aggressively.

They only play with flair when the situation allows it — and once a player decides he can't beat his man, a backward-pass merchant like Mitoma just doesn't fit this team anymore.

They're seriously ridiculously strong. If they get good results through this run of 5 straight away games, they're the real deal.
    62AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:14
Ever since Mitoma and Old Man Welbeck (ウェル爺, a nickname for veteran striker Danny Welbeck) disappeared from the lineup, the attack has come alive.
    69AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:23
    Re: #62
And that's even without Minteh in the squad.
    71AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:26
    So they're strong without Mitoma…
    76AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:33
    Re: #71
So basically, Mitoma is the reason they couldn't win.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The “M23 Derby” is a nickname for a rivalry dating back to the 1970s between two clubs that aren’t even geographically close, and it’s known as one of the most heated matchups in the Premier League. The thread was divided over the cause of Mitoma’s injury, with some claiming it’s a lingering effect of being forced to play at the Asian Cup, and others claiming it happened landing awkwardly during an official Premier League match — it’s worth noting both theories remain unconfirmed hearsay. Also, the allegations of financial rule violations against Manchester City mentioned in the thread are an ongoing, unresolved case still under review, not a finalized punishment.</analysis>

  • Downtown Plus Hit by Wave of Cancellations Before Even Hitting One Year — 5ch Dubs It ‘Schrödinger’s Matsumoto Hitoshi’

Claims that the streaming service “Downtown Plus” is struggling less than a year after launch have spread across 5ch. With annual subscriptions set to renew next month, threads buzzed with reports that even members who signed up for a full year right from the start are now talking about canceling. Posters also raised the fact that the service has begun partial distribution on Netflix, and that Hamada Masatoshi’s appearances have been kept to a bare minimum. Meanwhile, some argued “we don’t actually know if membership has really dropped,” and opinions were split over the reliability of the widely reported figure of 500,000 subscribers.

    1AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:08
Renewal time for annual contracts is next month, but even the diehards who signed up for a full year from day one are flooding in with cancellation announcements
Maybe Dow-Pla can't make it on its own — they've started streaming some of it on Netflix too
Has Hamada already written it off? He's barely involved anymore
    3AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:09
    Someone tell Matsumoto
People wouldn't watch you even if it were free — that's where you're at now lol
    13AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:13
    Re: #3
Yeah, by about a year after he vanished from TV, reactions to articles about him had already died down too
These days it's basically just the die-hard fans and 5ch still bothering to pay attention to Matsumoto
    4AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:10
Not sure if it's actually dropping though
    8AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:12
    Re: #4
    Schrödinger's Matsumoto Hitoshi
    18AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:15
    Re: #4
People are posting cancellation announcements all over social media, it's not even funny anymore
Even Hikaru said in a video it was boring and he's canceling his annual subscription
    5AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:11
Now it's not just Hamada — even Matsumoto's gone. What exactly are people paying for with this subscription?
    6AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:11
The sexual misconduct allegations are nowhere near cleared up, and even the fans who signed year-long contracts are giving up and canceling left and right
    It's over
    32AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:21
    Re: #6
    Yeah, exactly
When even the fans who were still paying just to watch that old man who's practically confirmed to be a creep (5ch slang tied to the scandal) are abandoning him — that says it all
    10AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:12
They put out a big official announcement padding the subscriber numbers to the max, so why's it tanking lol
    38AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:22
    Re: #10
That '500,000' figure has zero credible sourcing anyway
And when the article about the subscriber crash dropped, Matsumoto — who never tweets — came rushing in, which is just pathetically small-time, lol
    16AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:14
Honestly it's weird that anyone thought this would succeed
    41AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:24
    Re: #16
He lost the lawsuit, got banned from network TV, and then didn't even show up for Dow-Pla's first broadcast — all while saying 'I totally won that one!'

    Yeah, he got crushed
    19AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:16
So the articles saying 'you can't keep up with school conversations if you don't watch Downtown Plus' were just lies? 😭
    46AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:25
    Re: #19
That claim is just as sketchy as the '500,000 members' number
    59AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:31
    Re: #19
It's true that you can't keep up if you don't watch streamers, so sure, Dow-Pla counts as one of those too
    21AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:16

They packed the audience seats with young women, but this is supposedly the real fanbase…
There are even rumors they're hiring paid shills (sakura), lol
    26AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:19
People said back then it wouldn't even last a year, and they were right
    50AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:27
    Re: #26
Once the fans who signed up for the year from the start abandon it, it's over
There's nothing here that could grow membership, only shrink it
    27AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:19

Zero energy in this, probably because the end of service is near
    29AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:20
The comedy bits show up as shorts
    and they're absolute garbage
Can't believe people pay money for that
    55AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:29
    Re: #29
So this is apparently the funniest comedy bit Matsumoto's done all year…
    70AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:39
    Re: #55
The old Matsumoto would've probably snapped, 'You're losing points with how you wrote that flip board' (フリップ, the cue cards used in variety shows)
    33AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:21
Isn't it just too sad that this is how a comedian who built an entire era ends up?
    56AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:30
    Re: #33
Even though 'Iibe' (a 5ch nickname tied to the scandal) and Matsumoto both brought this on themselves, this is still way too sad an ending
    37AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:22
Call Nakai Masahiro before it ends — that alone would be enough to satisfy some egos and bring in viewers
    43AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:24
    Call Ozawa
    68AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:37
    Re: #43
    Yeah, I think so too
Abandoning the underling you squeezed money out of for so long is just cruel
    112AnonymousOct 19, 2026 14:15
    Re: #43
If I were Idota, I'd tell him to never come near me again
    52AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:28
    No way…
They said Downtown Plus was going to be the final blow to network TV
    69AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:38
    Re: #52
Dow-Pla's decline outpaced network TV's decline
Dow-Pla barely even became a topic of conversation in the first place
    54AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:29
If they just rounded up a bunch of sketchy guys like Miyasako and Ozawa, wouldn't that alone get people watching?
    73AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:40
    Re: #54
At this point Matsumoto might have no choice but to rely on big brother Hikaru
    66AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:36
If he'd gone with YouTube there was a real shot at success
This is where Matsumoto's stinginess shows through too
Being this cheap when he's got the money — now that's a talent
    82AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:45
    Re: #66
If he did YouTube, where the numbers are visible for everyone to see, and ended up losing to Egashira of all people, proud Matsumoto could never handle that
    71AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:39
Not sure if it's true, but apparently when people expected him to apologize to Ozawa, he instead got defensive and snapped, 'You introduced me to some seriously messed-up women, you know that?'
He's probably not going to appear on the show, and besides, Ozawa had already resumed his entertainment career
Seems like in the TV industry, the read is: Matsumoto got cut loose, and Ozawa got forgiven
    84AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:47
    Re: #71
    Yeah, that's about right
Though whether there's even demand for Ozawa is looking tough too

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Downtown Plus is a paid streaming service that Matsumoto Hitoshi launched after failing to get the outcome he wanted in his lawsuit over the sexual misconduct allegations and pulling back from network television, with co-starring appearances alongside Hamada Masatoshi serving as its main selling point. What split opinion in the thread was whether membership is genuinely declining: some pointed to cancellation reports circulating on social media as evidence of a downturn, while others countered that no official membership figures have ever been released, so the real situation is unknown. The “500,000 members” figure mentioned in media reports also came with no cited source, and questions about its reliability kept coming up in the thread. Readers should keep in mind that neither the reports of a wave of cancellations nor the membership figure itself have been confirmed by an official statement from those involved or verified by a third party.
