  • Utsunomiya Japan Cup: Rider Crashes After Contact With Spectator — 5ch Asks, “Can We ID the Culprit?”

On October 18, a crash occurred during the “Utsunomiya Japan Cup” cycling road race in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, after a rider made contact with a spectator along the course. On the 19th, the event’s official X (Twitter) account confirmed the incident and issued a statement urging spectators to follow proper race-watching etiquette and asking people to refrain from trying to “identify the culprit” on social media. On 5ch threads, users searched for footage that might show the scene, discussed the race’s international reputation and Japan’s unique culture of broadcasting road races, and — despite the organizers’ request — kept speculating about the age and gender of the person involved.

The official X account of the “Utsunomiya Japan Cup Cycle Road Race” — billed as Asia’s top-level road race — posted an update on the 19th regarding the race held on the 18th.

It reported that a rider had made contact with a spectator and crashed, and once again called on spectators to follow proper viewing etiquette.

The organizers’ official X account stated, “During the road race held on Sunday, October 18, a rider made contact with a spectator along the course and crashed,” adding, “Regarding the running of the event…”

So anyway — if you check this thread, can you figure out who did it?
    10AnonymousOct 19, 2026 20:50
The Japan Cup road race is technically one tier below the top-level UCI WorldTour, in the UCI ProSeries — but foreign riders have been saying things like "the crowd's energy is amazing and they really get the race" and "the organization is great too, they should just bump it up to WorldTour level." Well, this kind of put a damper on that.

If the person doesn't come forward themselves, this witch hunt is probably going to keep going.
    29AnonymousOct 19, 2026 20:56
That kind of thing happens all the time at the Tour de France. Dogs running across the road too, for that matter.
    30AnonymousOct 19, 2026 20:58
You don't have to go hunting for the culprit, but acting all "not my problem" after causing a crash is garbage.

In the first place, is it even okay to just take over the roads of a decent-sized town without any regard for the residents? "We got a permit" doesn't automatically make it fine.

There must be people who are unhappy about it. Japan doesn't even have a bike-racing culture to begin with — so just hold it at a racetrack like F1 does, or do it indoors.

France and other European countries air plenty of their own domestic races, but they don't really broadcast other countries' races live very much. J Sports 4, though, broadcasts absolutely everything live.

"Asia's top-level cycling road race, the Utsunomiya Japan Cup Cycle Road Race" —

I'm a cyclist myself, and I didn't even know a race like that was being held in Japan.
    69AnonymousOct 19, 2026 22:01
Re: #65 Calling it "Asia's top-level" is just wrong. Of the top-tier UCI WorldTour races, only these two are held in Asia:

Feb 16-22: UAE Tour (United Arab Emirates)
Oct 13-18: Tour of Guangxi (China)

The Japan Cup is in the category one tier below that.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The Utsunomiya Japan Cup is a race in the UCI ProSeries, one tier below the UCI WorldTour, and as some thread users pointed out, the “Asia’s top-level” label is debatable (the only WorldTour races held in Asia are the UAE Tour and the Tour of Guangxi). A defining feature of Japanese road cycling races is that spectators can watch for free right up close to the course, which is part of why overseas riders praise the “incredible crowd energy” — but that same closeness is also what creates the risk of contact accidents like this one. In fact, the Tour de France has seen multiple crashes caused by spectator banners or contact, so this incident isn’t especially unusual. Where thread opinion split was over the gap between the organizers’ request to refrain from “hunting for the culprit” and the reality — posts speculating about the person’s age and gender kept coming anyway. There was also disagreement over the road closures themselves: some worried about the impact on residents’ daily lives, while others countered that the actual closed sections that day were mostly park roads and golf-course access roads, so the real-world impact was limited — meaning it’s not quite fair to simply call it “seizing public roads without asking.”

  • Musk to Gift SpaceX Stock to Every Child in America

Elon Musk has revealed he will give the SpaceX stock he personally owns to every child in the United States. AFPBB News reported the story on October 19, 2026, and a thread quickly sprang up on 5ch’s News Flash+ board. Word also spread that rather than issuing new shares, the stock would be distributed by transferring Musk’s personal holdings into the U.S. Treasury’s “Trump Accounts.” Reactions in the thread were mixed — some praised it as a generous giveback, while others wondered whether receiving shares might be conditional on supporting the Republican Party, and whether it would affect the stock price or existing shareholders.

"If everyone in the world invested, everyone could profit (get richer)" — that's entirely plausible under how capitalism works. The feeling that "it's weird for everyone to profit" comes from treating investing like gambling (horse racing, casinos), a 'zero-sum game' where someone's winnings are someone else's losses. But the real nature of stock investing is a 'positive-sum game' — the world's total wealth (value) keeps growing, so everyone's slice of the pie gets bigger.

    Re: #197
    That's America for you, incredible

Background and Key Points of This Story

This stock gift is built on the “Trump Accounts” system established under the Trump administration. Under this scheme, the U.S. Treasury automatically opens brokerage accounts for children and encourages contributions, and it appears Musk will transfer his own shares into these accounts. Since this isn’t a new share issuance, it shouldn’t dilute existing shareholders’ stakes — though since SpaceX is privately held, the actual state of its share price is hard for outsiders to verify. Some in the thread speculated the plan might fall through depending on the midterm election results, but that’s speculation not confirmed in the article itself — the only confirmed fact is the announcement that “every child in America” is the intended recipient.

  • Matsuko Always Orders the Same Mister Donut Classics — 5ch: ‘French Crullers Are a Work of Genius’

When Mister Donut’s new “Sichuan-style Spicy Addictive Mala Noodles” came up on the October 19 broadcast of “5-ji ni Chuu!”, Matsuko Deluxe instantly shot back, “I would never eat that,” revealing that she always sticks to the same go-to order. That set off a lively 5ch debate that had nothing to do with the new product — French Cruller vs. Angel French, whether Old Fashioned dough tastes different than it used to, and everyone’s own personal Mister Donut staples.

    10/19 (Mon) 8:51 PM

TV personality Matsuko Deluxe (53) appeared live on TOKYO MX’s “5-ji ni Chuu!” (weekdays at 5:00 PM) on the 19th, where she talked about her “ordering philosophy” at the famous donut chain.

The show covered news that Mister Donut’s new menu item, “Sichuan-style Spicy Addictive Mala Noodles,” was generating buzz, but Matsuko flatly declared, “I would never eat that.”

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The original article is about Matsuko Deluxe’s remarks on her ordering style, made when she was asked on “5-ji ni Chuu!” about Mister Donut’s new “Sichuan-style Spicy Addictive Mala Noodles.” The thread quickly abandoned that new product and turned into everyone sharing their own “go-to order at Mister Donut.” The debate split along two main lines: (1) whether French Cruller or Angel French fans have the more “normal” preference, and (2) nostalgic complaints that Old Fashioned and Pon de Ring “don’t taste like they used to.” There’s almost no discussion of the new product itself — the thread’s real content shifted from the mala noodles in the headline to a debate about how classic donuts have changed over the years, which readers might not expect from the headline alone, since it reads like a new-product report but isn’t really about that. Note that some posts touching on Matsuko’s body or age were excluded from this writeup, as they amounted to personal insults.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

At one point in the thread, a poster claimed Kaori Iida’s age was “45,” but as corrected in >>9 and >>11, that’s just posters’ guesswork based on memory, not a number she’s ever publicly confirmed — readers shouldn’t take it as settled fact. Separately, as pointed out in >>24, Morning Musume convention is to say “Nth gen” (期), not “Nth-gen member” (期生), so the “-sei” phrasing used in the thread title is the kind of thing fans would typically flag for correction. For context, Morning Musume is known as a group where alumnae (OB/OG) and current members stay closely in touch, and Iida, even among 1st-generation members, is known for frequently treating and cheering on her juniors. Multiple posters also testified that Homare Okamura, as a 15th-generation member, has had an unusually large number of one-on-one meetups with OGs over roughly the past year, and the sheer breadth of that social circle became the thread’s central topic. That said, it’s worth noting that the specific list of which OGs she’s met is based on posters’ hazy recollections, not confirmed official information.

※This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Morning Musume.’s 1st-gen member Kaori Iida and 15th-gen member Homare Okamura went on a lunch date 🤍💛.”

  • Ichiro Furutachi slams Atsuhiko Nakata’s rare TV return — 5ch reacts: “Is this just a wrestling act?”

Freelance announcer Ichiro Furutachi, 71, brought up Atsuhiko Nakata of the comedy duo Oriental Radio on Fuji TV’s official YouTube channel on the 19th — Nakata is set to appear on “Neptune League” for the first time in 16 years — and had some harsh words: “He turned his back on TV, and now suddenly he’s popping up everywhere? That pisses me off.” Nakata had scaled back his TV appearances in recent years due to his school-management work and political remarks, making this something of a return to his old stomping ground. On 5ch, reactions split between those calling Furutachi’s remark “pro-wrestling-style theater” (a scripted feud for show) and those calling Furutachi himself “the smaller man” here, with plenty of side discussion about how TV casting has shifted since Hitoshi Matsumoto’s hiatus from entertainment work.

Freelance announcer Ichiro Furutachi (71) appeared on Fuji TV’s official YouTube channel on the 19th, and had a moment where he called out a certain comedian.

It happened in a preview clip for the same network’s “Neptune League,” airing on the 26th. In it, Atsuhiko Nakata of Oriental Radio — making his first appearance in 16 years — smiled and said, “No wonder I’m so happy, especially getting to be in this studio with my partner,” before declaring, “Delivering perfection is what makes the Perfect Human.” (A reference to Oriental Radio’s signature “Perfect Human” song and catchphrase.)

    Background and Key Points

Atsuhiko Nakata has drawn mixed reactions over the years for his political remarks and his school-management ventures, and there was a period when he scaled back his TV appearances as a result. This “Neptune League” appearance is said to be his first in 16 years, and Furutachi’s comment takes the form of a sarcastic jab at that “TV comeback.” Within the thread, some pointed out that the two men are actually close friends off-camera, and the prevailing view was that this is less a genuine clash than a scripted back-and-forth — in other words, pro-wrestling-style theater. There was also a notable amount of speculation that, since Hitoshi Matsumoto stepped back from entertainment work, variety-show casting has shifted, making it easier for someone like Nakata, who had kept his distance from TV, to be booked into the openings left behind. It’s worth noting, however, that this is speculation from 5ch users and not a confirmed fact about the shows’ actual casting decisions.

  • Neuroscientist Nobuko Nakano Apologizes for ‘Sexual Entertainment’ Remark — 5ch: ‘That’s Not Really an Apology’

During the broadcast of Nippon TV’s “News to” on the 15th, brain scientist Nobuko Nakano sparked controversy by using the phrase “sexual entertainment” while discussing how politicians build their personal networks. On the 19th, Nakano apologized on her Instagram, saying her words had been “taken in a way different from what I intended,” and explained that she had meant to point out “the structural problem of female politicians finding it hard to attend nighttime gatherings.” The incident is also remembered for MC announcer Chiaki Kuroki immediately pushing back on air with, “I don’t think that’s the case.” On 5ch, many posters questioned the form of her apology, saying it reads as pinning the blame on listeners’ interpretation rather than owning her words, while some showed understanding for the underlying point she was trying to make.

The guy who got seriously chewed out by the former president of Microsoft Japan was also a "brain scientist," wasn't he.

Background and Key Points of This Story

The “I used an expression that invited misunderstanding” style of apology is a phrase politicians and celebrities reach for again and again, and it tends to locate the problem not in what was actually said but in how listeners interpreted it — exactly the pattern that draws backlash on forums like this, with posters saying she’s “blaming the audience.” Nakano’s actual point appears to have been a structural one: female politicians, who have a harder time attending nighttime gatherings and sexual-entertainment-type settings, end up at a disadvantage when it comes to trading information. But the term “sexual entertainment” itself carried such a strong punch that the word took on a life of its own before her explanation could catch up. The fact that the MC shot the remark down instantly, live on air, is also being read as a sign the show’s staff sensed the risk in real time. Beyond the rights and wrongs of the remark itself, the thread also spun off into discussion of Nakano’s past media appearances.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “[TV] Nobuko Nakano apologizes for her “sexual entertainment” remark on the 15th broadcast of Nippon TV’s “News to” — “it was taken in a way different from what I intended”.”

On 5ch, discussion centered on the existence of a “mandatory rule” requiring one of the key networks or NHK to carry the Japan Series broadcast live through to the end, the fact that Japan Series ratings in recent years have stayed in the single digits, and comparisons between those ratings and VIVANT’s.

“Baseball or Bepan?” [Bepan is the secret unit from VIVANT] Japan Series Game 2 — if the game runs past three hours, “VIVANT”‘s start time will be pushed back

On the 19th, TBS updated the programming schedule on its own website, confirming it will air a live broadcast of Game 2 of the pro baseball “SMBC Japan Series 2026” (at Yokohama Stadium) on the 25th.

The championship series between the Yokohama DeNA BayStars and the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks runs from the 24th at Yokohama Stadium and Mizuho PayPay Dome.

Broadcasting the baseball Japan Series isn't about broadcast rights or anything like that —
    it's mandatory.

Rules on broadcasting the pro baseball Japan Series:
    1. One of the key networks + NHK absolutely must broadcast it
    2. The game absolutely must be broadcast start to finish

No matter how low the ratings, no matter how much a station doesn't want to air it, if they're assigned, they have to broadcast.

    Not many people know this.
From the perspective of TV industry people, pro baseball is treated like a cursed object because of its low ratings

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

There’s a long-standing arrangement for broadcasting the pro baseball Japan Series: one of the commercial key networks or NHK must always carry the game live, from start to finish. Because the assigned station has to see the game through to the end regardless of ratings, broadcasts have continued even as ratings have stayed in the single digits in recent years. Alongside explanations of this system, posters in the thread pointed out that VIVANT’s per-episode ratings have topped those of past Japan Series broadcasts, and noted the broadcasters’ own circumstances — that ratings carry different value in Kanto versus regional areas — revealing structural factors on the industry side that can’t be captured by a simple popularity comparison.

※This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Entertainment & Sports News+) thread “[TV] “Baseball or Bepan?” TBS to broadcast Japan Series Game 2 — if the game runs past three hours, Sunday Theater’s “VIVANT” start time will be pushed back.”

  • Triple Crown Winner Teruaki Sato in MLB? Maybe Just ‘.260, 30 HR, 80 RBI, .820 OPS’

Teruaki Sato, who claimed the Central League Triple Crown with the Hanshin Tigers, got NPB fans on 5ch debating “what kind of hitter he’d actually be if he moved to MLB.” The thread’s starting point was a baseline the original poster threw out — a .260 average, 30 home runs, 80 RBI, and an .820 OPS — and from there the discussion branched into comparisons with Munetaka Murakami and Kazuma Okamoto, the rule of thumb that college-drafted position players adapt to top-level pro ball more slowly than those who turn pro straight out of high school, and how Sato’s free-swinging approach would hold up in MLB, where plate discipline gets tested far more. Both optimistic and harsh predictions followed.

    9AnonymousOct 19, 2026 23:51
He could probably hit even more homers than that — the ball carries farther over there.

    Re: #9
Wait, does the MLB ball really fly farther?
    26AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:08
For position players, only the ones who adapted to pro-level pitching within 4 years of turning pro out of high school ever make it over there. Maki, who hit .300 with 20 homers as a college-draft rookie, actually has better odds than Sato.
    28AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:08
    Re: #26
Sato was slow to adapt as it is, and he's a free swinger on top of that.
    36AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:14
He could probably hit around 30 homers or so? Batting average would be .230 at best, though.
    46AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:28
Ichiro, Matsui, Ohtani, Seiya, Okamoto, Murakami — for position players, success comes down to whether you adapted to pro-level ball within 4 years of turning pro out of high school. By that measure, college draftees are already out of the running.
    48AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:29
    Re: #46
Even college draftees are fine if they adapt by year one or two, though. Look at Aoki — dominant batting title in the minors in year one, then won the batting title AND Rookie of the Year in the majors in year two.
    50AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:30
Sato still hasn't even passed Maki in career hits or OPS. He should become the best in Japan first before we talk MLB.
    76AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:58
    Re: #50
That's because manager Okada had him messing with his hitting mechanics and other unnecessary tweaks, they clashed, and he got sent down to the minors over it.

    .215, 35, 85, .750 — that's probably about right.
    55AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:37
    Re: #52
If he puts up numbers like that, it'd actually beat expectations. But if an MLB team is paying out something like 3 billion yen, they're probably expecting more like an .880 OPS.
    53AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:35
    Re: #48
College draftees really are a mixed bag. Akiyama, a similar type of player, flopped over there too.
    57AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:39
    Re: #53
Akiyama didn't blossom into a title-caliber, top-tier player until his 5th year as a college-draft pro. That really is late.

And Sato's in his 5th year as a college draftee too.
    54AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:36

    61AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:44
    Re: #60
Year one could go pretty badly for him. It all comes down to how well he adjusts — he grew enough to win the Triple Crown in NPB, so that's exactly the kind of growth I want to see from him over there.
    63AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:50
He doesn't have the power Murakami or Okamoto have. I'd guess 15 homers, .230, .790 OPS.
    71AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:56
    Re: #63
That OPS is way too high! How many walks is he supposed to be drawing to get there?
    64AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:50
Ohtani put up something like a 1.066 OPS, so shouldn't Sato be able to clear at least 1.000, maybe even push past 1.100 if things break right? And don't forget his home park is Koshien.
    65AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:52

    87AnonymousOct 20, 2026 01:04

He's not the type who draws walks like Murakami. Sato's an even bigger free swinger than Okamoto.
    86AnonymousOct 20, 2026 01:02
He's the Triple Crown winner, but it's all first-half banked stats, so there's no real sense of dominance. Even on paper, drop his numbers into the Pacific League and he wouldn't have won a single title.
    90AnonymousOct 20, 2026 01:05
    Re: #86
When Murakami won the Triple Crown, he was also interleague-play MVP that same year.

Background and key points of this discussion

The Triple Crown measures domestic standing — leading the league in batting average, home runs, and RBIs — and whether those numbers hold up in MLB, where pitching quality and ballpark differences are far greater, is a separate question entirely; that premise runs under the whole thread. Commenters split mainly on two points. First, whether Teruaki Sato — now in his 5th year as a college draftee — fits the rule of thumb that “only players who adapted to top-level pro pitching within 4 years of turning pro out of high school have gone on to succeed in MLB.” Second, how his free-swinging approach would play in MLB, where plate discipline is tested much more rigorously: optimists pointed to his raw power and how differently the ball carries over there, while the more cautious pointed to a likely jump in strikeouts and drop in OPS. Readers should note that the predicted batting averages and home run totals floated in the thread are just individual posters’ gut feelings, not an official forecast based on team scouting or statistical modeling.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G board) thread “Even Triple Crown winner Teruaki Sato would supposedly end up just a ‘.260, 30 HR, 80 RBI, .820 OPS’ hitter in MLB“.

The Murakami Fund got caught up in the insider trading scandal involving Livedoor and Nippon Broadcasting System shares, and when its founder was forced to step down (he later made a comeback), the fund sold off its Hanshin Electric Railway shares. Hankyu Holdings (now Hankyu Hanshin Holdings) bought up those shares, putting Hanshin under Hankyu's umbrella — so maybe that salary-suppression thing isn't really an issue anymore?

They prioritized Teru's shot at 40 home runs.
Put another way, that's about all the Climax Series is worth — it's just a sideshow.

    Re: #76
There's a title on the line, after all.
And Hanshin fans are coming out to see SatoTeru and Morishita, so they can't afford to rest them.
That's probably why he pleaded directly to get treatment time worked into practice hours.
    77AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:37
Murakami and Okamoto are both heading over too, so it's fine.
It's sad to see star players leave Japan, but there should be some balance.

    90AnonymousOct 20, 2026 00:41
A win rate just a bit over .500 and advancing in 3rd place is plenty good enough.
If an overqualified player wants out, just let him go.
Especially if he can't deliver when it matters most.
Using the money from the posting fee to reinforce the roster with multiple players is absolutely the better move.
Of course the coaches have to resign and take responsibility lol
It'd be scarier if they just quietly stuck around.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The posting system lets a player, with his team’s consent, gain the right to negotiate a move to Major League Baseball; Teruaki Sato is the Hanshin Tigers’ star hitter who won the Triple Crown in the 2025 season. Kanemura’s phrase “shiran de” is Kansai dialect roughly equivalent to “I can’t vouch for what happens next,” and reads as a blunt expression of concern over losing a key asset. Meanwhile, the club has given no official explanation for the departures of coaches Eiichi Koyano and Atsushi Fujimoto, and since Kanemura himself avoided stating anything definitive — saying only “I can guess” — speculation about internal circumstances spread through the thread. Readers should note that two competing takes on Sato’s Triple Crown coexist here: that he “only won it because Murakami and Okamoto weren’t around,” and that it was simply “an impressive record” — neither backed by any objective statistical analysis, both remaining purely impressionistic opinions from 5ch.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Sokuhou+) thread “[Baseball] Yoshiaki Kanemura voices concern over Hanshin’s approval of Teruaki Sato’s posting bid, “I have no idea”… “I can guess” about coaching staff departures.”

  • Even the Kamakura Shogunate Mnemonic Changed: 5ch’s Running List of ‘Things That Used to Be Called Something Else’

A 5ch thread listing things whose names have changed over the years — like “jeans are now ‘denim’” and “Georgia used to be ‘Gruzia’” — blew up with replies. Topics ranged from official renamings of countries and dog breeds to barely-alive slang for toothpaste and bell-bottoms, and partway through, posters started objecting that “some of these aren’t renamings — they’re just different things.” Plenty of people were also surprised to learn that the mnemonic for founding the Kamakura shogunate had changed from “Nice Kingdom (1192)” to “Nice Box (1185).”

Nosebleed (hanaji) used to be written 'hanadi' (鼻血/はなぢ)
Ground (jimen) was also written 'dimen' (地面/ぢめん)
The voiced form of 'chi' (ち) is technically 'di' (ぢ), but so many idiots kept misspelling it 'ji' (じ) that 'ji' got officially allowed too.

In other words, it's the bottom of society running the world.

    Re: #9
The 'ji' in 'jimen' (ground, 地) isn't a voiced version of 'chi' (ち) at all — it was always its own separate reading, 'ji' (じ). Same deal as in 'nunoji' (fabric), 'kiji' (dough/cloth), and 'jihada' (bare skin).

    Background and talking points

Each change raised in the thread has its own backstory. “Gruzia → Georgia” reflects a 2015 change by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made to move away from the Russian-derived name. “Kiev → Kyiv” followed Russia’s 2022 invasion, as major media switched to honor the Ukrainian pronunciation. “Nice Kingdom → Nice Box” stems from textbooks adopting the theory that the Kamakura shogunate’s founding should be dated to 1185, when real control was established, rather than 1192, when the shogun was formally appointed — the year itself didn’t change, just which year counts as the founding. Some replies argued these aren’t cases of “the name changing” so much as “one thing being swapped for an entirely different thing” (>>11), and the same objection came up around brake discs vs. disc rotors, where a difference in part terminology was being treated as a mere renaming. The ji/di spelling rule comes from modern kana usage conventions, and other replies pushed back on the accuracy of the popular theory behind it.
