  • Morning Musume Faces the “Wait, Are They Still Around?” Debate

A thread went up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board about the public’s reaction of “Wait, is Morning Musume still a thing?” It started from the gap between the public’s perception—frozen at golden-era hits like “LOVE Machine” and “Renai Revolution 21″—and what the current members and follow-up groups like Juice=Juice are actually up to now. Some pointed out the group’s last big hit was nearly 30 years ago, while others drew a contrast with AKB48’s 20th-anniversary appearance on NHK’s Kohaku Uta Gassen, which pulled high ratings—sparking disagreement over just how much media exposure actually matters.

    Apparently so
    3AnonymousOct 20, 2026 07:36
That's just "Ankasu" talk (a derisive 5ch nickname mashing ANGERME's name with "kasu," meaning trash)
    56AnonymousOct 20, 2026 09:16
    Re: #3
ANGERME isn't recognized by the mainstream either
    5AnonymousOct 20, 2026 07:36
Morning Musume isn't doing this for the general public's sake.
Even if the general public knew about them, it's not like the general public would actually pay money for it

    Re: #5
They've spent forever basking in a hit song from a quarter-century ago, yet not only does nobody show up to current shows chasing that nostalgia—they don't even perform that quarter-century-old hit live anymore. It's a mystery of a group
    7AnonymousOct 20, 2026 07:37
Both "Renai Revolution 21" and "Chokotto LOVE" played within a single commercial break, and it really drove home that the public's impression is stuck entirely in the golden era
    8AnonymousOct 20, 2026 07:39
Even if some middle-aged guy says "wait, you're still around?" nobody's going to care, lol
    9AnonymousOct 20, 2026 07:40
Thanks to Juice=Juice, people are at least getting to know them now
    12AnonymousOct 20, 2026 07:46
Seems like the public needs to forget about them once before they can be a hit again
    13AnonymousOct 20, 2026 07:46
Variety shows perform Morning Musume's songs but never actually invite the members on
    14AnonymousOct 20, 2026 07:47
Yeah, figured. Even as a fan club member, when I go to Hello! Pro concerts it's more like "oh right, she's in the group" level of recognition for me
    17AnonymousOct 20, 2026 07:51
At the very least, I'd want younger people to at least know them as "Juice's little sister group"
    19AnonymousOct 20, 2026 07:57
Juice is a lost cause for that.
You'll have to find someone else
because unlike the other Hello! groups, Juice=Juice is now the only unit still branding itself as a "little sister" act
Even once every Morning Musume member becomes their junior, they're still the stubborn "baby sister who doesn't care if you've got a problem with it" type
From their very debut they never called themselves "Hello! Pro"—they've always gone with "little sister unit" instead

Hello! Project itself had basically been forgotten and turned into a fossil
when Juice=Juice showed up on TV, the reaction was more like "oh, Hello! Project still exists?"
nobody would even imagine there are other groups like ANGERME or Tsubaki Factory in there too

    Well, obviously—but that's peak-era Morning Musume

unless you're the type who actually goes to shows in person or one of the hardcore fans (nicknamed "wolves"), nobody's going to casually call them "Musume" or "Morning" lol
    29AnonymousOct 20, 2026 08:12
Well, they were popular 30 years ago
and almost nobody who was popular 30 years ago is even still in the group
    30AnonymousOct 20, 2026 08:12
The point is that after finally stepping back from relying on peak-era OGs (veteran former members) for the 20th anniversary,

It's been 30 years, so there must be plenty of people hearing about them for the first time

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Morning Musume formed in 1997, born out of an audition on the TV show "ASAYAN," and had a golden era defined by the explosive 1999 hits "LOVE Machine" and "Renai Revolution 21." The group has kept going for nearly 30 years since, continually swapping out members. What split the thread was how to read this "frozen name recognition." On one side were voices treating it as a problem that only the golden-era songs and image have stuck in the public’s mind, while the current members and Hello! Project as a whole go unrecognized. On the other side were voices arguing that, since the business model runs on a fixed fan base built around the fan club and handshake events, broad public recognition doesn’t really matter in the first place. The comparison to AKB48’s high-rated 20th-anniversary Kohaku appearance also came up, raising the question of whether media exposure directly determines whether a group stays known after a generational turnover. One point readers might easily misread: this "never heard of them" reaction doesn’t itself signal the group’s decline—it stems from a difference in how the group operates.

  • 1 Million Savers Blow Past Japan Post Bank’s ¥13 Million Cap — Private Banks Fume Over Push to Scrap It: ‘That’s Basically a State Bank’

Japan Post Bank caps its ordinary savings accounts at ¥13 million, and the number of customers nationwide who have gone over that limit has now reached roughly 1 million. Since the ¥9.7 trillion in excess deposits earns no interest at all, Japan Post Bank has asked the government to scrap the cap. Private banks, however, are pushing back hard, arguing it would strip away the deposits their whole business model relies on. Because the government holds a stake in Japan Post Holdings, the cap has historically existed to stop an implicit government guarantee from distorting competition — so whether to remove it is anything but a simple call. On 5ch, the thread ranged widely: debate over whether Japan Post Bank is effectively state-run, questions (and answers) about why it even wants the cap lifted, and speculation over where the oddly specific ¥13 million figure came from.

The number of Japan Post Bank customers exceeding the ¥13 million cap on ordinary savings accounts (roughly equivalent to a regular deposit account) has reached 1 million. The ¥9.7 trillion in excess deposits earns no interest, putting customers at a disadvantage. The bank has asked the government to remove the cap. Private financial institutions, which compete fiercely for the deposits their businesses are built on, are pushing back hard, calling it an unfair encroachment on private business.

The government holds a stake in Japan Post Holdings, Japan Post Bank’s parent company. Regulations exist precisely so an implicit government guarantee doesn’t distort the competitive landscape. The savings cap was set by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and the Financial Services Agency…(continued in the paid edition, 1,408 characters remaining)

Compared to a few years ago,
    it's actually gotten decent.

With ¥10 million even in a regular savings account

Used to be like ¥100 a year even on ¥10 million 😭

Honestly the one genuinely useful thing about Japan Post Bank is that there are tons of places to pull out cash with zero fees.
So just keep your money somewhere with a better rate normally, and transfer it over to Japan Post fee-free whenever you actually need cash, no?

Never really thought about Japan Post's cap, but
once you're over ¥10 million you'd just spread it across other banks
or buy government bonds with it.
    25AnonymousOct 20, 2026 07:51
These are customers who are fine with the excess earning no interest, right?
Why is Japan Post Bank itself so desperate to add interest that it's lobbying the government for it?
If they're that dying to pay out interest, just raise the rate on deposits within the existing limit.

Japan Post Bank is scarier than even Norinchukin Bank (the big agricultural co-op bank that took huge losses).

Japan Post Bank is using your deposits to buy both US Treasuries and Japanese government bonds, so it's taking losses on both fronts at once.
That's why it's cutting staff costs and hiking fees to try to plug the hole.

On top of that, it's making it harder to actually withdraw your own deposits.

If you think 'it's my money, of course I can withdraw it,' go to a post office and try pulling out ¥1 million.
    They'll refuse you.

    Re: #126
I recall it used to be ¥10 million quite a while back, so maybe they bumped it up because of inflation?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The ¥13 million cap on ordinary savings accounts exists under authorization from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and the Financial Services Agency, specifically to keep the government’s stake in Japan Post Holdings — and the implicit government guarantee that comes with it — from distorting competition with private banks. Behind the push to abolish the cap is Japan Post Bank’s own concern that the low limit keeps it from attracting wealthy depositors’ money, and the thread featured a noticeable back-and-forth between posts questioning that motive and posts explaining it. What’s easy to miss, though, is that this cap only applies to ‘ordinary savings’ accounts on their own — a separate ‘time deposit’ category carries an identical cap, so combining the two effectively allows deposits of up to ¥26 million. The oddly specific ¥13 million figure, meanwhile, is simply the result of a previous ¥10 million cap being raised over time, adjusted along the way to track shifts in prices and interest rates. There’s more nuance here than a simple ‘encroachment on private business’ versus ‘benefit to customers’ framing can capture.

  • Miki Fujimoto Goes All-In on Squid in Hachinohe, Aomori — 5ch: “MIKITYYY!”

The October 19 broadcast of NHK’s “Tsurube’s Family Toast” (鶴瓶の家族に乾杯, a long-running travel show in which comedian Shofukutei Tsurube drops in unannounced on small Japanese towns) featured former Morning Musume member Miki Fujimoto visiting Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture, sampling squid dishes and meeting locals along the way. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board (dedicated to the Hello! Project idol stable that includes Morning Musume), posters reacted in real time to Fujimoto’s antics, Hachinohe’s squid cuisine, and her exchanges with Tsurube. The thread also spun into the board’s favorite recurring argument — “who really loves Morning Musume the most?” — plus reactions to Fujimoto’s meeting with a fan who calls himself Hachinohe’s #1 Morning Musume supporter.

    Background and Talking Points

“Tsurube’s Family Toast” is NHK’s long-running travel series in which comedian Shofukutei Tsurube visits regional towns with no advance arrangements. Miki Fujimoto joined Morning Musume as one of its early members in 1999, graduated from the group in 2007, and has worked as a television personality since. The episode’s destination, Hachinohe, is a port city famous for its squid landings, and the thread featured several posters reminiscing about local squid dishes. True to the Hello! Project board’s usual character, discussion drifted away from the broadcast itself and into the perennial debate over “who loves Morning Musume the most” — and the moment where Fujimoto looked blank at a younger member’s name was read by posters as a telling snapshot of the gap between the group’s alumni and its current lineup.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “■ Miki Fujimoto ■ Tsurube’s Family Toast — Meeting a Morning Musume Fan Who Calls Himself Hachinohe’s Best, in Hachinohe, Aomori ■ NHK General TV 19:57–20:42 ■“

  • Has NiziU really ‘lost momentum’? Opinions split over data showing 6 straight No. 1 albums

A thread that started with the question “Why has NiziU lost momentum?” quickly split into two camps. Harsh voices argued “they’ve never really taken off since debut” and “they never even got off the ground in the first place,” while others pushed back, pointing to Oricon album sales data showing six consecutive No. 1 albums since their 2021 debut album, with the latest release moving 192,000 copies in its first week — proof, they said, that the group’s popularity hasn’t faded. The discussion also touched on how a hit pre-debut song earned them a Kohaku Uta Gassen appearance before they’d even officially debuted, followed by four consecutive years on the New Year’s Eve show. The core of the debate became the gap between gut-feeling buzz and the actual sales numbers.

LOL, 12 shows for 120,000 total attendance
that's mid-tier at best — try filling a dome or something

Background and key points of this discussion

NiziU is a group formed in 2020 out of Nippon TV’s “Nizi Project” audition show. Because their pre-debut lead single became a hit, they landed a spot on NHK’s Kohaku Uta Gassen before they’d even officially debuted, and went on to appear for four consecutive years afterward. What split the thread was the gap between “felt-sense buzz” and “actual sales data”: some read the drop in online exposure and chatter as them “losing momentum,” but the numbers tell a different story — six consecutive No. 1 albums on Oricon since their 2021 debut album, with the latest release topping its predecessor at 192,000 copies in its first week. The fact that their arena tours are still drawing steady crowds was also cited as evidence a solid core fanbase remains. That said, claims about K-pop overall losing steam, or comparisons with other groups like HANA, remained largely impressionistic and should be read with caution, since they weren’t backed by hard data.

  • Nifty Suffers Unauthorized Access, Up to 540,000 Customers’ Data Possibly Leaked — 5ch Reacts: “Wait, Nifty Still Exists?”

Nifty announced on the 19th that its line application and reception management system was hit by unauthorized access from outside, potentially leaking the contract information of up to 542,513 customers of its fiber-optic services such as @nifty Hikari. Those affected are customers who applied for a line since 2019, with leaked data potentially including member ID, name, gender, date of birth, address, phone number, and email address — though bank account and credit card information was not affected. On the forum thread, many expressed surprise that Nifty still exists (“wait, Nifty’s still around?”), while others speculated about a possible connection to the recent KDDI-related suspicious email scare, and some voiced fatigue over having to change their passwords yet again.

Nifty doesn't own physical lines itself, so its connectivity services run over carrier lines.
It looks like mostly services using au lines are affected, so that's probably what's going on.
They also run business email services, so if the core system got breached, the damage could be huge.

    Re: #189
Telehodai was an NTT thing (the old flat-rate late-night phone line service).

Background and Key Points of This Story

Nifty was spun off from the Fujitsu group in 2017 and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Nojima in 2023 — a history that came up repeatedly in the thread. The data reportedly leaked this time consists of contract information such as member ID, name, address, phone number, and email address, with passwords and payment information excluded. Some posts in the thread conflated this incident with the recent “spoofed emails sent via a KDDI-provided email service” scare, but according to Nifty’s announcement, this is a separate case involving unauthorized access to its own line application and reception management system. The fact that the affected services run on au lines led some to speculate the root cause lies with carrier-side infrastructure, though there’s no confirmed information backing that up at this point. Amid a string of personal data leaks, there was also a noticeable gap in perception, with some pointing out that “this isn’t something you can fix by just changing your password.”

  • Japan to Resume Foreign-Worker Intake for Hospital and Nursing-Home Cooks, Shifting Them to a New Visa Category

Regarding the food-service industry category, where new intake under the “Specified Skilled Worker (i)” status had been halted, the government has told a panel of experts that it plans to resume accepting workers — limited to meal-service cooks at medical and welfare facilities — by reclassifying them under the “food and beverage manufacturing” category. This is an emergency fix after a post-halt survey revealed a severe labor shortage, with resumption expected next April. On the forum, the argument that “raising wages would bring Japanese workers too” clashed with the counterargument that “nursing and welfare wages are tied to taxes and insurance premiums and can’t simply be raised,” while others pointed to competition for workers with other industries like convenience stores.

Regarding the issue of new intake being temporarily suspended in the food-service sector under the “Specified Skilled Worker (i)” residence status for foreign workers, the government told a panel of experts on the 19th that it plans to resume intake — limited to meal-service cooks at medical and welfare facilities — by reclassifying them under the food and beverage manufacturing category.

A survey conducted after the suspension revealed a serious labor shortage. While this amounts to an emergency fix of shifting the category rather than addressing the root cause, some experts are calling for the acceptance cap itself to be raised.

Employers wishing to bring in new meal-service cooks will be required to file fresh applications. The government plans to formally adopt the revised policy in a cabinet decision by year’s end, with intake expected to resume in April next year.

In nursing care, workers' wages come out of tax money
    So raising nursing-care workers' pay
Means raising taxes on the public

Background and key points of this discussion

“Specified Skilled Worker (i)” is a system for accepting foreign workers in fields facing severe labor shortages, and the food-service industry had previously had new intake suspended. This time, the plan only covers meal-service cooks at medical and welfare facilities, plugging the gap by shifting them into the “food and beverage manufacturing” category, which has different requirements — it is not a revision of the acceptance cap itself, a detail easy to miss from the article alone. On the forum, opinions split between “raising wages would bring Japanese workers too” and the counterargument that “wages in nursing and welfare are tied to insurance premiums and taxes, so simply raising them would come back as higher costs for users and higher premiums.” Some also raised concerns about competition for workers with other industries like convenience stores, suggesting the labor shortage can’t be fully explained by low wages alone.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Speed+) thread “[Specified Skilled Worker (i)] Intake of meal-service cooks at medical and welfare facilities to resume — reclassified from “food service” to “food and beverage manufacturing” — survey reveals severe labor shortage“.

  • PS5 Sells Out on Amazon — 5ch Weighs In: ‘No.1 and No.2 Are Probably Ocarina of Time and the Switch 2 Zelda Edition’

On 5ch’s “Hardware & Industry” (Geha) board, reports that the PS5 had sold out in Amazon’s sales rankings drew a crowd to the thread. Posters noted the PS5 also outselling the Switch 2 on Yodobashi, Rakuten, and Edion, briefly climbing as high as third place overall, while others claimed the Switch 2 had sunk outside the top 10 — ranking even below the DualSense controller. Some attributed this to a price cut to ¥52,778 and to leaked jailbreak information for the PS5, which some speculated drove demand from pirated-software users. The thread was split on whether this reflects genuine demand or demand fueled by piracy.

    Re: #79
The Trash-Station (ゴミステ) finally just started beating a Switch that's in its 10th year in weekly sales — how weak is that?

    Background and Key Points

There’s a generational gap at play here: the PS5 launched in 2020 and is about six years old, while the Switch 2 is a brand-new console that launched in 2025. In Japan, weekly hardware sales are typically dominated by Nintendo consoles, so any case where the PS5 pulls ahead is rare enough to become a talking point on its own — which is why reports of it selling out on retail sites quickly caught attention. That said, the “sold out” reports discussed in the thread refer to rankings and stock status on individual retail sites like Amazon and Rakuten, not the official weekly sales rankings compiled by outlets such as Famitsu — the two are easily confused but are not the same thing. The idea that a leaked “jailbreak” fueled demand from pirated-software buyers was also pure speculation within the thread, with no supporting evidence presented. The price cut to ¥52,778 is also seen as a factor behind the sellout, raising the possibility that this is simply a temporary spike in demand rather than a lasting trend.

  • “Will Splatoon 4 Even Sell?” — 5ch Split Over Spin-off ‘Raiders’

On 5ch’s Hardware & Industry board (Geha), a thread voicing sales concerns over the as-yet-unannounced Splatoon 4 has taken off. The spark was the assessment that “Raiders,” the Splatoon 3 spin-off, amounted to little more than an expanded Salmon Run mode. Using that as evidence, some posters argued the main series was “bound to hit a wall too,” and the thread filled up with posts looking back at how the series changed from 1 to 2 to 3. Others pushed back, calling it premature to judge the main series by a spin-off’s quality, while still more voiced nostalgia for the first game’s simple gear system or admitted they’d already moved on to Apex Legends or Helldivers 2. In the end, no consensus emerged.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The thread’s starting premise was the view that “Raiders,” the Splatoon 3 spin-off, amounted to little more than an expanded Salmon Run — and many posts tried to use that to gauge expectations for a fourth mainline entry. It’s worth noting that no official announcement or release window for “Splatoon 4” exists, so the entire discussion is purely speculative. The sticking point was whether Raiders’ quality says anything about the main series’ direction: some argued “it’s just a spin-off, so it’s no indicator,” while others insisted “it showed us where they’re headed.” Posters also traded corrections over finer, half-remembered details, like whether gear abilities actually had any distinct personality or whether hit-to-kill counts changed between entries. One thing readers might misread: the thread-title framing “Raiders showed its true colors” isn’t the thread’s consensus — it’s just one poster’s claim.

This brainwashing that "paying taxes makes you a great person" is genuinely messed up. By that logic, rich people who don't work hard but rake in huge taxes off money squeezed from laborers would be the "great" ones — what a world that'd be.

Why are the students even protesting? If they just quietly put up with it for 3-4 years, the education system might improve on its own eventually. I don't get it.

Honestly, the protesters might actually win this one.

What exactly counts as "just get a real job"? Is it fine to just be a middleman skimming off subcontracts ("nakanuki")? That doesn't exactly sound like contributing to society either, does it?
    152AnonymousOct 19, 2026 22:37
    Re: #133
The whole thing started because of France's massive pension debt crisis, so no matter who "wins," it's already game over. The debt's unpayable — they'd need to cut pension payouts to around 40% of current levels, but that alone would spark an even bigger riot.
    218AnonymousOct 19, 2026 22:49
Going to school, working, paying taxes — these are mechanisms for keeping society running, not grounds that justify society itself. When there's something wrong with the system, simply following it doesn't prove you're in the right.

Instead of asking what society actually needs to improve, we sort people by whether they're living up to society's expectations — and then laugh off the complaints of whoever doesn't make the cut. Is that really okay?
    227AnonymousOct 19, 2026 22:51
    Re: #218
If that stopped being the majority's values, society would collapse. Activists like Greta only get to exist in the first place because they're a minority.

You're the one with the problem here — and you're the one who's wrong.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Greta Thunberg, born in 2003 in Sweden, first rose to prominence through her school strikes for climate action, and she has also publicly disclosed that she has Asperger’s syndrome. This article touches on the protests against pension reform happening in France, reporting that Thunberg joined the student demonstrations. Within the thread, opinions split between those agreeing with the article’s stance that she “should get a real job and pay taxes,” and those pushing back that “it’s wrong to judge people’s worth by whether they conform to the system.” The latter view raises a broader question about the legitimacy of challenging the system itself, not just a personal attack — worth reading as more than mere criticism of an individual. Notably, France’s pension system has been flagged for worsening finances, and the conflict over reform is the backdrop to this demonstration.

  • China’s Pony.ai Partners with MK Taxi to Launch Robotaxis in Japan — Backed by Toyota Funding

Reports say Chinese autonomous-driving developer Pony.ai and major domestic taxi operator MK Holdings have signed a memorandum of understanding for a strategic partnership. MK has a track record of embracing new technology — it has already put Hyundai’s Nexo fuel-cell vehicles into part of its fleet — and this time it’s teaming up with Chinese self-driving tech. Reports also point to Toyota’s involvement as a funding source behind Pony.ai. On 5ch, opinions split between hope for the technology and anxiety over regulations, safety, and wariness toward China.

    Big news just dropped.

MK Holdings (MK), which operates MK Taxi, announced it has signed a memorandum of understanding for a strategic partnership with Chinese autonomous-driving developer Pony.ai.

The move appears to have an eye toward rolling out autonomous driving services in Japan.

Guess the day's coming when the yakuza start stuffing people into taxis to stage accidents (for the payout)…

Background and Key Points of This Topic

MK Holdings is a long-established Kyoto-based taxi company known for its high service quality, and it has also been proactive about adopting new technology, such as introducing Hyundai’s fuel-cell vehicles. Pony.ai is a Chinese autonomous-driving startup that already runs commercial robotaxis within China, and it appears to have set its sights on the Japanese market as part of its overseas expansion. However, what was announced this time is only a memorandum of understanding for a strategic partnership — a stage well short of an actual service launch, a distinction that’s easy to overlook. Within the thread, an unconfirmed rumor circulated that Nihon Kotsu was planning to acquire MK, which another poster disputed using publicly available information — a reminder that speculation tends to take on a life of its own around topics like this. Opinions on the autonomous-driving plan split along two different lines: assessments of the technology itself, and wariness toward the fact that a Chinese company would be running the service — two things worth reading separately rather than conflating.
