  • Akihabara Yodobashi’s PlayStation Section Transforms Into an Arcade Machine Corner

A sighting report claiming that the PlayStation section on the 6th floor of Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara has been converted into an arcade-style corner stocked with crane games went viral on X (formerly Twitter). With the PS5’s packaged (disc) version confirmed to end sales this coming January, some see this as a related effect. On a 5ch thread, visitors clashed over conflicting eyewitness accounts of whether the Nintendo and Xbox sections on the same floor had actually shrunk too, sparking debate.

The PlayStation corner on the 6th floor of Yodobashi Akihabara has somehow turned into an arcade corner…

The ripple effects of PS5 packaged version sales stopping this coming January have hit #YodobashiAkihabara…😄👟💨 The PS and Xbox sections have already shrunk by half at this point😆👀 There are even reports noting an insane drop in PS software sales volume…👀 Looks like Nintendo Switch’s reign is set to continue for years to come😄 By the way, the #Aikatsu (girls’ arcade card game) machine seems to have been played out completely — it’s out of cards

From Sony's perspective it's probably like: 'Go right ahead, retailers can pull out of PS lol. I mean, we're the ones who already pulled out of retail lol. PS is already at 95% digital downloads, so retail isn't even necessary anymore lol.'

Man, this is genuinely scary though — the crane games, the gacha machines, the girls'-arcade cabinets, they're all Bandai and Happinet, right? Takara Tomy and Sega aren't even competition anymore at this point. In the end, Nintendo's real enemy is Bandai, not Sony

Happinet treats Switch as a valued client, so they'll protect that turf. PlayStation, on the other hand, is basically no longer a business partner once discs go away, so they can crush it without hesitation. And it's not just Happinet — plenty of companies are flipping from valued clients to business rivals once discs are discontinued, so brace yourself

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Sony has officially announced that the packaged version of the PS5 will end sales this coming January, signaling a shift in focus toward digital downloads. Since retail game sections allocate floor space based on console and package sales volume, it stands to reason that shelf space would shrink as packaged distribution declines. What split opinion on the thread, however, was whether the Nintendo and Xbox sections had actually shrunk as well — visitors’ eyewitness accounts conflicted, and no consistent photos or official statements have confirmed it either way. Since a store’s layout can look different depending on when you visit and what angle you shoot from, it would be premature to draw firm conclusions about the industry’s overall balance of power from this sighting alone.

  • Nippon-Ham Announces Pitcher Koji Fukutani’s Departure — FA Signing Struggled as Bullpen-Only Arm

Nippon-Ham announced on the 20th that pitcher Koji Fukutani, who had joined the club via free agency, would be departing. Fukutani was Chunichi’s first-round pick in the 2012 draft and racked up wins as both a reliever and a starter before moving to Nippon-Ham via free agency in the 2024 offseason. Over his two years with the team he pitched exclusively in relief, going 1-1 with 2 holds in 14 games in 2025 and 0-1 with 1 hold in 12 games in 2026, with an ERA stuck in the mid-4s. On the 5ch (Geisports Hayabusa+) thread, attention centered less on his numbers than on the gap between his academic pedigree — a Keio University Science & Engineering grad nicknamed “the pitching PhD” — and his underwhelming playing career.

Nippon-Ham announced on the 20th that pitcher Koji Fukutani would be leaving the team. He had joined via free agency in the 2024 offseason, and this season he appeared in 12 games, going 0-1 with 1 hold and a 4.26 ERA.

Fukutani joined Chunichi as their first-round pick in the 2012 draft, establishing himself as a reliever with 72 appearances in 2014, and notched 8 wins as a starter in 2020. In his first season with Nippon-Ham in 2025, he went 1-1 with 2 holds in 14 games and a 3.77 ERA. Every outing since the move has come out of the bullpen.

Apparently he won the Fujihara Award — given to (supposedly) the top student in the Science & Engineering faculty (Keio's engineering school traces back to the old Fujihara Institute of Technology, hence the name). Sounds like he was better cut out for that than baseball.

    An update from me
In August the club told me I wasn't part of next year's plans, but I asked to keep playing as a Fighter through the end of the season, and they granted that wish.

    https://note.com/fukuta2/n/nf25aa3906d43

They could've just called it a release, plain and simple.
Calling it a "departure" makes it sound like Fukutani walked away on his own.

Fukutani was a bit high-strung. Maybe just not mentally tough.
Whenever he got into a jam, it showed plainly on his face.
He had a good fastball and real talent, but I always thought that hitch where he lifts his leg and holds it was bad for him.
Freezing like that right there just makes you more tense.
I don't get why so many pitchers today lift their leg and pause like that.
Better to go smooth like Horiuchi — lift the leg and flow straight into a soft release with no hitch. Horiuchi's delivery is the model everyone should be studying.

When truly high-achieving NPB players — guys who seriously studied at national universities or in hard-science programs at private schools — fail to produce, I think it's because overthinking works against them.

It's the internet, so if you're going to reply-anchor someone with "as a ballplayer, that is," at least put in the effort to lie properly — something like "I can say for a fact Fukutani's nothing special, because I was in Todai's Science II program." I hate one-upmanship that can't even be bothered to lie. Putting real effort into a snarky takedown, though — that's the internet at its finest, and I do love that.

    Re: #60
Exactly. Don't hedge your bets halfway.

    Background and Talking Points

Fukutani was Chunichi’s first-round pick in the 2012 draft and, while used mostly as a reliever, showed real staying power — including an 8-win season as a starter in 2020. He moved to Nippon-Ham via domestic free agency in the 2024 offseason, but over his two seasons there he pitched strictly in relief at the top level and never put up standout numbers for a free-agent signing. According to his own note article, the club told him in August he wasn’t part of next year’s plans, but agreed to let him stay on through the end of the season — meaning his exit came with his own consent rather than as a one-sided release, a distinction worth noting. What dominated the thread wasn’t so much his stats as the gap between his academic pedigree — a Keio University Science & Engineering graduate who won the Fujihara Award — and his on-field results. It’s worth flagging that the Fujihara Award is commonly misunderstood: it’s awarded based on extracurricular activities as well as academic performance, so it doesn’t necessarily mean “top of the class.”

The BD/DVD release of Hello! Project group Juice=Juice’s nationwide tour “Juice=Juice Concert 2026 UP TO 11 MORE! MORE!” opened with first-week sales of 4,834 copies, sparking discussion on 5ch’s “Hello! Project” board. That’s roughly on par with the previous release, “Queen of Hearts Special Flush,” which sold 4,968 copies, and still the top number among current Hello! Project groups. However, while the previous release sold out shortly after launch, this time stock remained available at stores and online retailers. Thread opinions were split between those arguing the group’s core fanbase has grown and those arguing that many new fans aren’t translating into actual purchases, with recurring complaints about talent agency Up-Front’s promotional efforts.

Since they have zero intention of selling Juice=Juice any further, they won't take measures to boost sales again either

In relative terms within current Hello! Project groups, they're the best-selling, but if you're talking about a group meant to keep breaking out further beyond that, it looks weak

Background and Key Points of Discussion

As the ranking against other groups shown alongside these numbers (see post #2) makes clear, this release still ranks among the top within Hello! Project. Even so, the strong “down from last release” narrative stems from a key difference in conditions: the previous release, “Queen of Hearts Special Flush,” saw demand strong enough to sell out after launch, whereas this time stock was adequately supplied throughout — meaning a simple comparison of unit numbers alone doesn’t fully capture the real picture. The thread’s debate largely splits into two camps: one holding that the core fanbase has grown, and the other arguing that most new fans are watching for free and aren’t translating into purchases — though neither side offers conclusive evidence. Whether environments like Hulu, where fans can stream the live footage through a flat-rate subscription, are affecting the motivation to buy physical discs was also discussed, but this too remains speculation.

  • Rays Sweep Into World Series With 3rd Straight Win — 5ch: “Such an Unpopular Team”

In the MLB postseason, the Tampa Bay Rays swept the Cleveland Guardians 3-0 in the American League Championship Series, clinching their third World Series berth in six years. The series MVP was starting right-hander Freddy Peralta. Starting on the 23rd, they’ll face the National League champion Milwaukee Brewers, meaning whichever team wins will claim the franchise’s first-ever World Series title. On 5ch, with neither team having a Japanese player or much name recognition, many posters wished for a matchup like Yankees vs. Dodgers instead, sparking a debate over TV ratings and team popularity.

    ◇October 19 (October 20 Japan time) — ALCS Game 6: Rays 7, Guardians 3 (St. Petersburg)

In the MLB postseason, the Rays won their third straight game to take the series 4-2, securing their third World Series berth in six years.

Starting right-hander Freddy Peralta (30) was named series MVP, holding the Guardians to 5 hits and 1 run over 5⅓ innings to pick up the win — his second of the series. The World Series, hosted by the Brewers in Milwaukee, opens on the 23rd (24th in Japan). Whichever team wins will be claiming its first-ever championship.

MLS isn't seeing any attendance boost right after the World Cup.

    https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Articles/2026/09/16/mls-not-seeing-immediate-post-world-cup-attendance-bump/

According to an analysis by Sports Business Journal, the soccer buzz surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted in North America hasn't translated into bigger MLS crowds in the two months since the league resumed from its 7-week break. Average attendance across the 154 regular-season games played since the league restarted on July 16 was 22,098 — down 1.7% from the same period in 2025, and essentially flat compared to this season's pre-break attendance.

Pitch velocity went up and home runs went down.
The end of the fly-ball revolution.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Rays have long struggled with low home attendance and are known as a small-market club. Their World Series opponent, the Brewers, is likewise a small-market team, and the thread’s view that “team owners actually welcome a matchup where they can win without spending money” reflects the realities of MLB’s revenue-sharing system and luxury tax under team management. On the other hand, concerns about falling ratings stem from recent data showing that games involving the Dodgers — Shohei Ohtani’s team — draw dramatically higher average viewership, a point that’s easy to overlook when considering how the presence or absence of Japanese players affects US television ratings. Comparisons with soccer ratings also came up, but reports that MLS attendance has struggled to grow even after the World Cup suggest it would be premature to call this a simple reversal of popularity.

  • Takayasu Stays Behind Alone After Akashi Tour Practice — Oldest Top-Division Wrestler Grinds Through 30 Minutes of Shiko and Suri-ashi

At the Grand Sumo tour stop in Akashi, Takayasu — the oldest wrestler currently in the top makuuchi division — stayed behind alone after practice and kept up shiko (leg-stomping) and suri-ashi (sliding-foot) drills for 30 minutes straight. Now 36, Takayasu is still fighting it out near the top of the division, and while he has reached the rank of ozeki, he has yet to win a top-division championship. On 5channel’s Geino/Sports News+ (芸スポ速報+) thread, some posters praised his steady, workmanlike training with comments like “I just want to see him win a title, even once,” while others cracked jokes playing on the word “shiko,” which also doubles as slang with a very different meaning. Some also pointed out the mental hurdle that keeps tripping him up — he tends to lose whenever a championship race comes down to the wire.

If Takayasu could just get past that mental block where he always loses once he heads into the final stretch still in title contention, he could actually win the whole thing.

    Background and talking points

Takayasu has been in the top makuuchi division since his debut there in 2012, and despite having reached ozeki rank, he still has no top-division championship to his name. At 36, he’s currently the oldest wrestler in the division, though Tamawashi is expected to return to makuuchi next basho, making that title a temporary one. The thread split between two reactions: praise for his steady, no-nonsense extra training, and pointed remarks about his tendency to lose once a championship race reaches its final stretch — a mix of admiration for his work ethic and frustration that it hasn’t translated into results. On top of that, the training term “shiko” also carries a separate, slang meaning, which sparked a wave of jokes from posters claiming to have misread the headline. That’s a separate matter from the actual subject of the article — Takayasu’s solo extra training session during the Akashi tour — and should be read as such.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5channel (Geino/Sports News+) thread “[Sumo] Takayasu stays behind alone to train after Akashi tour stop — oldest top-division wrestler does 30 minutes of shiko and suri-ashi.”

  • Uma Musume US Concert Canceled Over Visa Delays — 5ch: “Approval Takes Over Six Months”

Uma Musume Pretty Derby’s US concert was canceled, sparking an extended back-and-forth on 5ch over what caused it. At the heart of the discussion is a claim about how the process currently works: the short-term visa needed for a performance can’t be applied for until the schedule is locked in, and the review itself reportedly now takes more than six months to complete. Opinions split between posters asking why this wasn’t sorted out in advance — given that major concerts like this are typically planned roughly two years ahead — and others countering that visa screening has only gotten this strict quite recently. Whether fans who had already traveled to the US deserve compensation also became a major talking point.

The short-term performance visa can't even be reviewed until the dates are fixed, and only from six months before the show.

    16AnonymousOct 20, 2026 14:12

Probably because the rules changed after Trump took office, and it got especially strict starting around the middle of last year [2025].
A concert like this gets locked in something like two years ahead of time.
    75AnonymousOct 20, 2026 15:37
Apparently you can apply up to a year ahead, so I asked an AI when that rule actually started.
It said: 'I double-checked the official records. May 16, 2007 is correct as the effective date from which O-visa and P-visa petitions [US visa categories for people of extraordinary ability and performing groups] could be filed up to one year in advance. This is also stated in the text of the US Federal Register.'
So does that mean entertainment-visa applications have actually been allowed a full year out for quite a while now?

    Re: #75
General visas are a separate category from artist/group work visas — for this one, applications only open six months out, and six months isn't enough time for the visa to actually get issued (which is exactly what happened here).
    76AnonymousOct 20, 2026 15:54
They're covering hotel and travel costs too, right? That's fine then.

    Re: #76
Ha, not a chance — hotel costs are different for everyone anyway.

Background and key points of debate

Piecing together what the thread laid out about the rules: short-term visas for performance/work purposes can only be applied for once the concert dates are confirmed, and while some posters noted that applications in general can open up to a year ahead, several others pointed out that under the current administration, actually completing the review now often takes six months or more. If that’s accurate, even a major concert planned two years in advance could still miss the window, depending on exactly when the screening standards tightened. The thread split over where to place the blame for that delay — one camp argued Cygames was too optimistic about securing the visa in time, while another argued that back when the show was first planned, the process wasn’t nearly this strict. Opinion was similarly divided on compensating fans who had already traveled: some wanted Cygames to address the emotional fallout, not just the money, while others argued that anyone who chose to travel independently bears that risk themselves. It’s also worth flagging that no one in the thread cited a firm source for exactly when the screening tightened — one poster leaned on an AI chatbot’s answer — so the specific timeline should be treated with some caution.

Aichi has a lot of factories and actively supports foreign workers.
Back in the day, the Mikawa-to-Hamamatsu (Shizuoka) corridor had a lot of Brazilians too.

The reasons Aichi Prefecture has so many foreign workers, including Vietnamese, boil down to three big factors: 'a high number of job openings from manufacturing concentration,' 'relatively high wages,' and 'support systems from local government and communities.'

Efforts toward multicultural coexistence and living environment
    • Government/corporate support: Aichi Prefecture was early to establish initiatives like the 'Aichi Multicultural Coexistence Promotion Plan,' putting effort into multilingual consultation desks and Japanese-language education support.
    • Community building: Having fellow countrymen and seniors who arrived earlier helps with sharing everyday life info and forming communities, creating a cycle that draws in even more people.

Those aren't essential businesses anyway, so just ban hiring foreigners for that kind of work.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

These figures come from the foreign resident statistics the Immigration Services Agency publishes every six months, and the key point is that, by residency status, ‘Specified Skilled Worker’ has overtaken ‘Technical Intern Training’ to become the largest category. This also reflects the ongoing shift from technical intern training to specified skilled worker status, so the numbers don’t simply indicate a surge of brand-new arrivals. As for the swap in prefectural rankings between Osaka and Aichi, commenters on the thread pointed to several factors on Aichi’s side: ‘abundant job openings from manufacturing concentration,’ ‘relatively high wages,’ ‘government support systems like the multicultural coexistence promotion plan,’ and ‘the presence of same-nationality communities’ — suggesting this isn’t mere coincidence but the cumulative result of industrial structure and administrative policy. Meanwhile, no concrete explanation for why Osaka took the top spot emerged in the thread, and that point remains unresolved even in this article.

  • Ocarina of Time Remake Leaves New Fans Confused: 5ch Says ‘Nicer Graphics Alone Won’t Get Me to Buy It Again’

As the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time draws attention, opinions have split on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Geha)” board. The original is a 1998 Nintendo 64 title, the origin point of the traditional 3D Zelda format of clearing shrines and puzzle-filled dungeons. But since Breath of the Wild in 2017, the series has shifted toward open-world design, and more new fans have grown used to paragliding around rather than grinding through dungeons. In the thread, opinions clashed over a remake approach that only updates the graphics while keeping the original design intact — debating who the product is actually for, nostalgic veterans or newcomers, while comparing past sales figures and discussing hopes for the next entry.

    1AnonymousOct 20, 2026 11:40
I'll just say it: ever since Ocarina of Time, the Zelda series has had a history of declining sales.
For Japanese players, Zelda carries a lot of baggage — "you can't enjoy it if you're bad at action games," "you can't progress without solving strict puzzles," "the story's just boring to begin with."
The Ocarina of Time remake only polishes the visuals while leaving all those negatives exactly as they were.
    2AnonymousOct 20, 2026 11:41
I've only played Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom — the shrine puzzles were such a hassle that I looked up every single solution, so if this one's all about dungeons I might not enjoy it.
Also, I've gotten way too used to just paragliding everywhere.

To be fair, there's precedent for this: adding back "things they wanted to do at the time but had to cut due to memory or schedule constraints" — like footage Nintendo showed at Spaceworld that never made it into the final game, or the Mirror Zelda (the whole game flipped, a Wind Waker pre-order bonus), or the changes to the Iron Boots mechanics and camera work in the 3DS version. That kind of thing is fair game.
    56AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:46
    Re: #52
Stuff that existed mid-development but got cut from the final game is usually cut because it was boring in the first place, and if an idea was genuinely good but got dropped due to memory or deadline issues, it was almost certainly already reused in a later Zelda game after Majora's Mask — just think about it logically.
I can't say what's going on with Mirror Zelda specifically, but if we're just talking small quality-of-life tweaks like the 3DS version had, the Switch 2 version is doing that too, and that's beside the point here anyway.
    58AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:50

    71AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:56
Fans genuinely want retro game revivals, and the hypocritical idea that classic game design should be erased for the sake of a new generation has already lost.
If you're going to keep milking a series that's decades old, failing to properly resupply the accurate history of the old games will just make even younger players see you as a scammer and damage trust in the series.
That's exactly why people bluntly say "this is a completely different game from what I saw in the footage."
    73AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:57
    Re: #71
That only holds up if the sequels actually keep coming though. It's a problem if there's no new game and the series just stalls out on remakes.

    74AnonymousOct 20, 2026 13:01
    Re: #72
The characters were never all that popular to begin with, and demand for rail shooters has basically disappeared, so I think Star Fox fundamentally doesn't have much reason to exist anymore.
    81AnonymousOct 20, 2026 13:28
There's a fundamental question here: what is this Ocarina of Time remake even being released for?

If the question is whether you can't play it because it's an old game — no, you already can, via N64 Online.
If the question is whether newcomers will enjoy it — no, since the gameplay is still exactly as unforgiving as before.
If the question is whether nostalgic fans will enjoy it — the motivation to buy is thin, since basically only the graphics changed.

In the end, this remake exists on top of business-driven buzzwords like "we want a Zelda release in Switch's second year," "we want a Zelda out before the movie," and "the 40th anniversary" — but it was born out of compromises like "we want to keep the development budget down" and "we don't want to fully commit the 3D Zelda team's development pipeline to this."

We should take a hard, critical look and ask: is it really okay to settle for something this half-baked?
Because this will affect sales of the Majora's Mask remake waiting in the wings, and newcomers will just repeat history by concluding "Zelda isn't for me."

Not everything deserves blind praise just because it exists.

If anything, ever since A Link to the Past, the series kept neglecting the fun, go-anywhere freedom of the very first Zelda game, and Breath of the Wild finally felt like it brought that back to life — reborn, even.

Isn't it more accurate to say the dungeon-puzzle format that started with Ocarina of Time just got stale and stopped being in demand?
Even Ocarina of Time, which gets treated like a sacred cow, sold less than half of what Breath of the Wild did domestically, and its follow-up Majora's Mask sold shockingly poorly.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Ocarina of Time is a Nintendo 64 title released in 1998, and its structure of clearing shrines and dungeons through puzzle-solving went on to serve as the basic format for 3D Zelda games for a long time afterward. Since Breath of the Wild in 2017, the series has shifted toward open-world design, and the number of new fans unfamiliar with the puzzle-focused older titles has grown. What split opinion in the thread was whether a remake that only updates the visuals while leaving the old design untouched should be seen as “staying faithful to existing fans,” or as “a missed opportunity to bring in new players.” It’s worth noting that posts about development budget and direction (such as claims that the team “wants to keep costs down”) are speculation from within the thread, not anything confirmed by an official Nintendo announcement. Points were also raised that domestic sales of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask were lower than titles from Breath of the Wild onward, suggesting the criteria used to judge the series has shifted from game to game.

In a thread on 5ch’s News VIP board, the regular mascot character “Pomii” asked fellow posters how many Whopper-sized Burger King burgers they could eat in one sitting, and the answers were all over the map. For posters without a nearby Burger King who didn’t know how big a Whopper actually is, others stepped in to explain it as “about the size of a Big Mac.” Partway through, the thread drifted into fries and drink add-ons, the food court at Apita (a Japanese supermarket chain), shampoo, and oden fillings.

I figured it was just my scalp acting up before, but now I'm sure it's the shampoo's fault.

    Background and talking points

Burger King’s “Whopper” is often described as one size up from the Big Mac, and even a single one is considered quite filling on its own. On VIP, this kind of self-reported “how many of this big food item can you eat in one sitting” bragging thread is a classic format, and this one was no exception — no scientific data or official size/calorie figures were cited, with posters splitting into a “two to three is fine” camp and a “one is plenty” camp based purely on gut feeling. Some posters don’t have a store nearby and don’t know the Whopper’s actual size, which led to others explaining it using the Big Mac as a reference point. Toward the end, the conversation drifted into shampoo, the food court at Apita, and oden ingredients — a typical tangent for a VIP chat thread — with the actual Whopper discussion concentrated in the first half. Readers should keep in mind that the headline’s “how many can you eat” is a tally of posters’ self-reported guesses, not a measured result.

  • Amazon Weighing 12 Small Nuclear Reactors in the US — 5ch: ‘Build One in Tokyo’

On October 19, 2026, Amazon announced it is considering building 12 small modular reactors (SMRs) in Indiana, USA. Working with reactor developer X-energy and utility American Electric Power (AEP), the plan targets a combined output of 960,000 kW to power the local grid and data centers in the region. On 5ch, a thread lit up with jokes about where such a reactor would go if built in Japan (“Tokyo or Osaka?”), concerns over uranium supply and safety, and surprised comments like “Wait, isn’t Amazon supposed to be just an online bookstore? Now it’s building nuclear plants?”

    Re: #7
These are small modular reactors (SMRs), so output per unit is lower than a conventional reactor.
The advantage of going smaller is a larger surface-area-to-volume ratio for heat dissipation, which even allows air cooling in emergencies.

    152AnonymousOct 20, 2026 13:45
I get why going smaller makes sense for safety and post-decommissioning handling,
but the reason reactors got bigger in the first place
is that bigger is fundamentally more thermally efficient.

Uranium, the fuel for nuclear power, isn't actually that abundant a resource,
so isn't it a problem if small reactors become the trend?
    156AnonymousOct 20, 2026 13:47
    Re: #152
It's costly, but you can also extract it from seawater

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Amid surging electricity demand from AI data centers, Amazon and other major US tech companies have increasingly turned to nuclear power to secure their energy supply. The SMR design at issue here is X-energy’s Xe-100, which uses TRISO fuel (high-assay low-enriched uranium) rather than plutonium. While the thread was full of jokes about where such a reactor might be sited, opinions split between concerns over uranium depletion and the view that seawater-extraction technology could offset it. It’s also worth noting that Amazon itself won’t own or develop the reactors — it will receive power through contracts with the utility and the reactor developer — a distinction that wasn’t fully appreciated in the thread.
