  • Whisky advice for highballs hits 5ch: ‘If you’re used to rock-bottom whisky, Kaku counts as premium’

A thread titled “Recommend me a whisky that’s great as a highball, neat, or on the rocks” popped up on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board. The poster said they only knew Black Nikka and Jack Daniel’s, and replies poured in with everything from standards like Ballantine’s, Jim Beam, and Maker’s Mark to Chivas Regal’s Mizunara 12 Year.

Two points sparked debate: whether making a highball with expensive whisky is a “waste,” and how to rate Suntory’s Kaku bottle. Because Kaku strips out character to appeal to everyone, it’s often dismissed as “underwhelming” — though some called it “a great-value premium whisky,” and opinions split down the middle.

I've only ever bought Black Nikka and Jack Daniel's, usually just mixed with cola.
But cutting it with lemon-flavored sparkling water? That was actually great.
    5AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:07
Jack Daniel's Apple is pretty versatile.
Though it loses to Honey neat.

    What about Jim Beam?
    6AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:08
Ballantine's is cheap and good neat too.
If you're mixing it, just use whatever you like.

Thanks. Is it a safe bet?

Jack Daniel's is trash because the quality's inconsistent.
Take a lesson from Iichiko's reliability (a popular Japanese shochu brand), you clown.

Stay away from the dirt-cheap Japanese ones (Rin, "Kōshū," etc).

Beyond that it's all down to taste — you'll have to find your own favorite.

Honestly, if there's a word you don't get, just Google it first.

Bourbon, Irish, and Scotch are whisky categories based on region of origin. Just understand roughly that each region has its own flavor tendencies.

Malt refers to the malted barley used as a whisky ingredient.
    50AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:32
If you're fine with sweetness like a Jack and Coke, I'd just recommend bourbon straight up.

Something like I.W. Harper or Maker's Mark — those are good no matter how you drink them.

    107AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:52
    Re: #95
Whether it's lame or not aside — it's a whisky thoroughly stripped of character to appeal to everyone. So the lack of a distinct flavor often gets read as "underwhelming."
    101AnonymousOct 20, 2026 22:50
I like Riku (a Nikka Japanese whisky), and I realized I like that vanilla-ish flavor, so I figured bourbon would suit me — but there's no such thing as dirt-cheap bourbon, huh.

    Jim Beam's cheap though.

Background and key points of this discussion

Whisky is categorized by region of origin into types like Scotch, bourbon, and Irish, while “malt” refers to the malted barley used as an ingredient — a separate axis of classification from region. Suntory’s Kaku bottle, which split opinion in the thread, is designed as a blended whisky built for easy drinkability, so compared to whiskies with strong personality, its “lack of character” gets read both as “underwhelming” and as “an easy-to-handle, great-value option.” Whether it’s right to turn an expensive whisky into a highball also has no industry-standard answer — it’s easy to mistake this for more than just a matter of personal taste. And since bourbon’s ingredients tend to bring out a strong natural sweetness, recommending it to people used to sweeter drinks like cola mixes was also a practical point.

  • Discount Chain “Trial”: The Can’t-Miss Signature Dish for First-Timers Is Katsudon — Plus the Inside Story of the Seiyu Buyout

A thread where regulars recommend items to a poster who’s about to visit the discount supermarket “Trial” for the first time. One after another, they bring up the chain’s signature katsudon (pork cutlet rice bowl), egg sandwiches, frozen seared chicken tataki, and Seiyu’s private-label retort curry, though many also pointed out that the katsudon’s quality is hit-or-miss depending on the store. Along the way, posters also share some industry backstory that’s not widely known to shoppers — like how Seiyu went from Walmart to an investment fund before being bought by Trial, and how Seiyu’s old private label “Minasama no Osumitsuki” (Everyone’s Seal of Approval) will keep being sold alongside “Oishiku Nare!” (Become Delicious!) for the time being.

Trial's base is Kyushu, while Seiyu was mainly a Kanto thing

They're swapping the signs over to something like "Trial Seiyu" and renovating
Sounds like it's turning into a store that's different from both the original Trial and Seiyu
They're also rolling out a smaller format called "Trial GO" that uses Seiyu's kitchens to make deli food to sell

So it's a rival to La Mu (another discount supermarket chain)

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Seiyu was long known as being “under the umbrella of Walmart USA,” but it was later sold to an investment fund, and in 2023 Trial Holdings (a discount supermarket chain based in Kyushu) acquired shares, with the business integration now underway. The reason store signage is changing from “Seiyu” to “Trial” or “Trial Seiyu” is this buyout, and a smaller format called “Trial GO,” which uses Seiyu’s kitchen facilities, is also being rolled out. Opinion in the thread was split on the signature katsudon, with some saying “it’s just cheap, the taste is average” and others saying “it’s better than Seiyu’s,” suggesting quality varies by store. There was also word that Seiyu’s affiliated former private-label lines, “Minasama no Osumitsuki” (Everyone’s Seal of Approval) and “Oishiku Nare!” (Become Delicious!), won’t be merged and will continue to be sold side by side for now — both being treated as familiar Seiyu assets, which is easy to misunderstand without knowing the background of the buyout.

  • “I’ll Never Let My Kid Become a Nerd”: Mom’s Parenting Policy Has 5ch Saying “This Might Backfire”

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, an image apparently showing a mother’s social media post declaring she’ll “absolutely never let my kid turn into a chii-gyu” was posted, sparking discussion over her strict game-restricting parenting policy. “Chii-gyu” is a 5ch-born internet slang term for someone with a stereotypically “nerdy” look and vibe, and the thread’s title is itself a jab suggesting her approach could backfire. In the thread, commenters repeatedly warned that an all-out ban tends to breed rebellion, leading to isolation from friends or a total loss of self-control once the kid becomes an adult, with some arguing the real problem isn’t the ban itself but the “all or nothing” mindset behind it.

    12AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:30
Banning games just makes them more alluring, you know.
When I was banned from gaming, the most fun I ever had with games was in that window — my parents left for work at 8:10 and I left for school at 8:25.
Those 15 minutes in between were unbelievably fun.

    13AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:31
    Yeah, I get it.
I grew up not playing games in middle/high school myself.
Building social skills during that period is probably important.

But the reason I didn't play games wasn't because my parents restricted me.
It was simply because the people around me weren't playing either.
Parental restrictions don't really have that much power.
There are always plenty of workarounds.
    14AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:33

    15AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:35
Still, whatever the method, at least she's trying to raise her kid properly — that's better than nothing.
My friend's wife hands her 4-year-old a smartphone to shut them up, and spends the whole time on her own phone.
According to the kid, all three meals a day are frozen yaki-onigiri (grilled rice balls).
To put it mildly, that's abuse.
    17AnonymousOct 20, 2026 12:36
Well, it's still better than handing over a phone and neglecting them completely

Background and key points of this discussion

Worth noting: “chii-gyu” originated on 5ch and spread as a derogatory slang term for someone with a stereotypically unpopular, nerdy-looking face, and this thread proceeds on that premise. The thread split into two camps: those who argued that an all-out ban invites rebellion and isolation from friends, and those who argued the real issue isn’t the ban itself but the extreme “all or nothing” mindset behind it. The original post appears to be an unverified social media image, and it doesn’t definitively identify any specific family or individual. Some replies include anecdotes about acquaintances’ households, but these are all unverified hearsay, so they’re best read as general commentary rather than claims about any specific person.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry [Geha]) thread “[Sad News] The ‘I’ll Never Let My Kid Become a Chii-gyu’ Mom’s Parenting Policy Looks Like It’ll Raise a Chii-gyu Instead.”

  • Doi Yoshiharu’s “Apple Cut into Rounds” Goes Viral — Fans Say You Can Eat It Right Down to the Core

On October 18, culinary expert Doi Yoshiharu posted on X under the title “Wagiri Ringo” (ring-sliced apple), showing a photo of an apple cut horizontally into rounds instead of the standard wedge cut. The post drew attention after people pointed out that it lets you eat the apple skin-on, including the nectar-rich area around the core — and it’s become a hot topic. This spilled over into a thread on 5ch’s Entertainment & Sports News+ board, where opinions split between supporters (“They’ve cut it this way in Aomori forever,” “An apple cutter does the same thing”) and skeptics (“No juiciness, feels like eating a vegetable,” “Not something you’d serve to guests”). The discussion also branched into a side debate about what that “nectar” inside apples actually is.

Culinary expert Doi Yoshiharu updated his X account on October 18. He posted a photo of an apple cut in a way other than the standard wedge cut, and it’s become a hot topic.

Under the title “Wagiri Ringo” (ring-sliced apple), Doi posted a photo of an apple sliced horizontally into rounds rather than cut into wedges.

The post has drawn responses such as: “Someone from Aomori taught me this cut! You can eat it skin-on,” “In my house we always cut it this way — you get to enjoy it all the way to the core,” “I want to drizzle on melted butter and sugar and torch it with a blowtorch,” “Ever since I learned this cut, I still find myself wanting more,” and “You get to eat the nutrient-rich area around the seeds too — kinder to the earth as well.”

Background and key points of the debate

Doi Yoshiharu is a culinary expert known for concepts like “one soup, one dish” (ichiju-issai); his father was fellow culinary expert Doi Masaru. On TV he’s frequently introduced unconventional cooking methods, and this “ring-slice” apple is seen as another example. The thread’s real divide wasn’t so much over whether the cut itself is good, but between those who already knew about it (“it’s an old technique in growing regions like Aomori,” “an apple cutter does the same thing”) and skeptics (“no way I’m copying this,” “it’s bland and vegetable-like, not good”). The other point readers often get wrong is what that “nectar” actually is. As comment 59 points out, that translucent area is where sugar (sorbitol) has seeped into the tissue along with water — strictly speaking it isn’t “nectar” itself, and on its own it actually tastes rather bland. The real reason ring-sliced apples taste good once they’ve ripened enough to develop that nectar is that the surrounding flesh gets sweeter — a bit different from the popular belief that the nectar itself is the tasty part.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Entertainment & Sports News+) thread “Culinary expert Doi Yoshiharu’s “way of cutting an apple” goes viral: “You can eat all the way to the nectar-rich area around the seeds, even the core”.”

  • Nio Kou sparks buzz over new short haircut spotted hatless: “Fired up now” “Leveling up, huh”

Chunichi Sports reported on the 19th that pitcher Kou Nio (26) was photographed without his cap after live batting practice, with the shot posted on the team’s official Instagram. His newly trimmed hairstyle, short on both sides, drew approving comments on the 5ch Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ board like “He’s fired up” and “Leveling up, huh.” At the same time, some posters admitted they don’t recall his Koshien heroics and couldn’t see why he’s getting so much attention, while others voiced concern over new manager Kudo’s reputation for being tough on players — turning a thread about a haircut into a wider debate about Nio’s future role.

The Chunichi Dragons’ official Instagram was updated on the 19th with a photo of pitcher Kou Nio (26) with his cap off, and fans are buzzing about his new hairstyle.

The post shows Nio, looking fired up, removing his cap with his right hand as he walks off the mound. His hair was cropped short on both sides. The caption read: “Nio heads off the mound after pitching in live batting practice — October 19, at Nagoya Dome (photo by Keita Imaizumi).”

The comments section filled with words of encouragement: “Cut his hair even shorter — fired up, leveling up, huh,” “Got a haircut, he’s fired up,” “Damn, good face on him,” “The manager change is in a way a new shot at opportunity,” “The new manager likes players who give it their all, so go get ’em.”

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Kou Nio was the Chunichi Dragons’ first-round pick in the 2019 draft, an unusual player who split time between pitcher and infielder in high school. As a pro, he’s never settled into a fixed position or role, and has gone long stretches without producing results. That’s the backdrop to why a simple change in hairstyle is generating buzz: it reflects his status as a player who draws attention for reasons other than performance. The thread split between posters reading the new look as a positive sign and those taking a cooler view of a player who hasn’t delivered results still getting image-driven coverage. Comments about the new manager’s strictness likewise mixed hope and anxiety, and it should be noted that the manager’s actual approach can’t be definitively judged from thread comments alone.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Breaking News+) thread “[Chunichi] “He’s fired up” — Kou Nio’s hatless hairstyle draws attention, fans stare: “Leveling up, huh” “Good face on him” [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★]” thread.

  • Sohin Warns Sponichi: ‘You’ll Never Cover Me Again’ — 5ch: ‘Kaus’s Overindulgence’

Sohin, of the comedy duo Shimofuri Meisei, caused a stir on 5ch after warning Sports Nippon (Sponichi, a major Japanese sports daily) on social media: “Pull the article running in tomorrow’s paper — after this, you’ll never get to cover me again.” According to Sohin himself, his tactics include excluding Sponichi alone from his press conferences and leaking information exclusively to rival outlets. The thread debated this from several angles: whether he actually has any right to force a newspaper to comply with such a demand, how it squares with freedom of the press, and — with a touch of irony — the fact that Sohin himself is usually the one dishing out criticism of others.

    Re: #137
From the video, it doesn't look scandal-related
he's mad because leaking it early would wreck a bunch of projects he has lined up around announcing that info.

Background and key points of this discussion

Sports newspapers can refuse interview requests or ask an outlet be left off a press conference’s guest list, but they generally have no legal mechanism to actually stop a story from running. What Sohin’s side is reportedly using isn’t the “pull the article” demand itself, but operational pressure — excluding Sponichi from press conferences, or leaking information exclusively to rival outlets — a tactic commonly used by entertainers and their talent agencies to steer coverage. The thread split over whether to view this as “interference with freedom of the press” or simply “within the normal bounds of controlling one’s own media access.” Some also questioned the consistency of it, given that Sohin himself is usually known for his critical remarks about others. One point easy to miss from the headline alone: it reads as though he “ordered a publication ban,” but this is really still at the request/warning stage — he has no actual power to enforce it.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G, a “live commentary” discussion board) thread “[Breaking] Sohin warns Sponichi: ‘Pull what’s running in tomorrow’s paper — after this, you’ll never get to cover me again’.”

  • flumpool Hit with ‘Ghostwriter’ Allegations — Composer Claims He Secretly Wrote Their Songs for 8 Years, Files Suit

It’s been reported that pianist and composer Fuminori Oura has filed a damages lawsuit against flumpool guitarist Issei Sakai. Oura claims that for roughly eight years he composed songs — including “Koe ni Naranai Omoi” (“Feelings That Can’t Be Voiced”), used as background music in the TBS drama Taigan no Kaji: Kore ga, Watashi no Ikiru Michi! (“Housework on the Other Shore: This Is the Path I Live”) — that were credited to Sakai instead of himself. On the 5ch Geisoku Sokuho+ (celebrity/sports tabloid) thread, posters repeatedly compared the case to the infamous Mamoru Samuragochi ghostwriting scandal, while speculation also swirled about whether other famous artists’ songwriting credits hold up to scrutiny.

“For about eight years, I created background music for dramas at the request of flumpool guitarist Issei Sakai. But the songs I composed were released under Sakai’s name, and I was never credited as the composer,”

says Fuminori Oura, who works as a pianist and composer. Alongside scoring an upcoming horror game set for release in 2027, he also works as a piano teacher.

The dispute centers on “Koe ni Naranai Omoi,” a piece of background music (“gekiban”) used in the 2025 spring TBS drama Taigan no Kaji: Kore ga, Watashi no Ikiru Michi!, which starred Mikako Tabe with Dean Fujioka among the cast. Oura is now suing Sakai over the song, seeking damages.

If ghostwriting is set up as an actual agreed contract between both parties, there shouldn't be any problem with it. So why does it blow up later? Even with novels or manga, these days it's rarely made by just one person — it's a team effort. But calling the person who gave instructions and had it made 'the author' alone is something society generally accepts.

At the very least they should've paid him the same rate as an arranger — several hundred thousand yen per song.

Background and Key Points of This Story

This case is often compared to the ghostwriting scandal involving Mamoru Samuragochi that came to light in 2014, but the legal nature is different. In Samuragochi’s case, the problem was that he publicly presented a false persona — a deaf composer who was a second-generation atomic bomb survivor — and deceived the public. By contrast, the lawsuit Oura has filed concerns a dispute over contract terms and moral rights of authorship: he claims the songs he composed were credited to the person who commissioned them rather than to himself, not that the work itself was stolen or that anyone faked their background. In the music industry, it’s not uncommon for outside composers to write background scores or songs credited to a singer or idol group, and this poses no legal problem as long as it’s agreed to by contract. The thread prompted a flood of unverified speculation about other famous artists’ songwriting practices, but as of now the only confirmed, public matter is the lawsuit between Oura and Sakai — treating other cases as equivalent to it would be premature.

  • Sony’s New Walkman Costs ¥679,800, Hits Shelves in November

Sony’s newly unveiled Walkman, the “NW-WM1ZM3,” is reportedly priced at ¥679,800 for the 256GB model and set to launch in November, sparking a wave of reactions on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board. At 670g — heavier than a bottle of water — it drew repeated questions about who would actually buy such a thing in an era when listening to music on a smartphone is the norm, while others guessed it’s aimed squarely at audiophiles and car-audio enthusiasts. Some pointed out that the Android-equipped models have notoriously poor battery life, with the older non-Android series lasting far longer, and the thread split over exactly who this device is for.

    104AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:29
    Re: #102
That battery life is seriously way too weak

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The “NW-WM1ZM3” at the center of this discussion is the successor to Sony’s top-tier Walkman “Signature Series,” and the previous model also cost around ¥400,000 — these have always been known as premium gear aimed at audiophiles, not mass-market devices for the general public. The design prioritizes sound quality, right down to using oxygen-free copper in the chassis, and the 670g weight is said to be a byproduct of that. Now that listening to music on a smartphone is the norm, it’s natural that people would question the point of a standalone player, but as the thread itself pointed out, the target audience isn’t people looking for a “smartphone replacement” — it’s listeners seeking high-quality playback through car audio systems or home setups. Meanwhile, the point that Android-equipped models burn through battery fast, while the non-Android S series and A series last much longer, is a nuance that’s easy to miss for readers unfamiliar with the Walkman lineup — and the thread split in tone between those who saw the price alone as a “rip-off” and those who viewed it as simply “the going rate in that hobby’s world.”

Photography should be allowed at Yodobashi Akihabara, so go take a photo right now

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Sony has officially announced that the packaged version of the PS5 will end sales this coming January, signaling a shift in focus toward digital downloads. Since retail game sections allocate floor space based on console and package sales volume, it stands to reason that shelf space would shrink as packaged distribution declines. What split opinion on the thread, however, was whether the Nintendo and Xbox sections had actually shrunk as well — visitors’ eyewitness accounts conflicted, and no consistent photos or official statements have confirmed it either way. Since a store’s layout can look different depending on when you visit and what angle you shoot from, it would be premature to draw firm conclusions about the industry’s overall balance of power from this sighting alone.

  • Nippon-Ham Announces Pitcher Koji Fukutani’s Departure — FA Signing Struggled as Bullpen-Only Arm

Nippon-Ham announced on the 20th that pitcher Koji Fukutani, who had joined the club via free agency, would be departing. Fukutani was Chunichi’s first-round pick in the 2012 draft and racked up wins as both a reliever and a starter before moving to Nippon-Ham via free agency in the 2024 offseason. Over his two years with the team he pitched exclusively in relief, going 1-1 with 2 holds in 14 games in 2025 and 0-1 with 1 hold in 12 games in 2026, with an ERA stuck in the mid-4s. On the 5ch (Geisports Hayabusa+) thread, attention centered less on his numbers than on the gap between his academic pedigree — a Keio University Science & Engineering grad nicknamed “the pitching PhD” — and his underwhelming playing career.

Nippon-Ham announced on the 20th that pitcher Koji Fukutani would be leaving the team. He had joined via free agency in the 2024 offseason, and this season he appeared in 12 games, going 0-1 with 1 hold and a 4.26 ERA.

Fukutani joined Chunichi as their first-round pick in the 2012 draft, establishing himself as a reliever with 72 appearances in 2014, and notched 8 wins as a starter in 2020. In his first season with Nippon-Ham in 2025, he went 1-1 with 2 holds in 14 games and a 3.77 ERA. Every outing since the move has come out of the bullpen.

Keio Science & Engineering — guy's genuinely smart.

Apparently he won the Fujihara Award — given to (supposedly) the top student in the Science & Engineering faculty (Keio's engineering school traces back to the old Fujihara Institute of Technology, hence the name). Sounds like he was better cut out for that than baseball.

Did he fight a bear or something?

The Fujihara Award factors in extracurricular activities too, not just grades, so calling it "top of the class" isn't quite right.

    An update from me
In August the club told me I wasn't part of next year's plans, but I asked to keep playing as a Fighter through the end of the season, and they granted that wish.

They could've just called it a release, plain and simple.
Calling it a "departure" makes it sound like Fukutani walked away on his own.
    13AnonymousOct 20, 2026 16:50
    Apparently he's ridiculously smart.
Could've gone the researcher route instead.
He got stuck with a nickname like "the pitching PhD."

Yeah, and he's out of Jishukan High School too.

As a baseball player, that is.
    14AnonymousOct 20, 2026 16:50
Well, he raked in a nice paycheck without much to show for it on the mound, so he's got nothing to complain about lol
    15AnonymousOct 20, 2026 16:53
And it's Keio's Science & Engineering program, no less.
Impressive he managed to juggle both.
    17AnonymousOct 20, 2026 16:53
If he was already told he was out of the plans back in August, why announce it in the second wave of roster cuts? Was there a reason — did he briefly get back into the plans?
    18AnonymousOct 20, 2026 16:54
Good for him, pocketed a nice chunk of change.

Last year his salary held steady at 20 million yen.
This year it was 45 million yen.

That's the salary he got after moving as a free agent?

Pretty cheap for a free agent.

Players who move from the "Perfect League" (Pacific League fans' own cheeky nickname) tend to succeed even after switching to the "Second League" (their dig at the Central League), but it feels like guys crossing from the Central League over to the Pacific have a much higher bust rate.
    20AnonymousOct 20, 2026 16:55
Amazing he even managed to graduate — there's no way you graduate from Keio Science & Engineering if you're only focused on baseball.
    21AnonymousOct 20, 2026 16:55
Since it's a "departure" and not a formal release notice, is that why the announcement reads differently from Umebayashi and the others?
    23AnonymousOct 20, 2026 16:56
Fukutani's probably the only active player who can read sabermetrics papers in English and actually understand them.
Even a Todai liberal-arts grad would have a tough time reading them with a real grasp of the statistics.
    26AnonymousOct 20, 2026 17:01
Let's get him into the Dragons' front office — he could become the club's second-ever team president to have come up through the pro ranks.
    27AnonymousOct 20, 2026 17:02
Would love to see him go to grad school and then make his mark as an electrical/electronics engineer.
    28AnonymousOct 20, 2026 17:02
If he'd stayed with Chunichi, he probably would've landed a job at the Chunichi Shimbun, CBC, or Tokai TV after retiring.

Nippon-Ham seems like an uncomfortable place to be unless you're one of Shinjo's favorites.

"…and I hope for your continued support going forward."
That line's probably in there for Ham too, right?
    32AnonymousOct 20, 2026 17:07
If he'd stayed with Chunichi, he'd likely still be with the club now and on track to be an executive someday.

Would you even want to be at today's Chunichi [Shimbun] though?

Fukutani was a bit high-strung. Maybe just not mentally tough.
Whenever he got into a jam, it showed plainly on his face.
He had a good fastball and real talent, but I always thought that hitch where he lifts his leg and holds it was bad for him.
Freezing like that right there just makes you more tense.
I don't get why so many pitchers today lift their leg and pause like that.
Better to go smooth like Horiuchi — lift the leg and flow straight into a soft release with no hitch. Horiuchi's delivery is the model everyone should be studying.

    Re: #46
When truly high-achieving NPB players — guys who seriously studied at national universities or in hard-science programs at private schools — fail to produce, I think it's because overthinking works against them.

They probably just aren't built to empty their heads and go for it.
    60AnonymousOct 20, 2026 17:45
It's the internet, so if you're going to reply-anchor someone with "as a ballplayer, that is," at least put in the effort to lie properly — something like "I can say for a fact Fukutani's nothing special, because I was in Todai's Science II program." I hate one-upmanship that can't even be bothered to lie. Putting real effort into a snarky takedown, though — that's the internet at its finest, and I do love that.

    Re: #60
Exactly. Don't hedge your bets halfway.

    Background and Talking Points

Fukutani was Chunichi’s first-round pick in the 2012 draft and, while used mostly as a reliever, showed real staying power — including an 8-win season as a starter in 2020. He moved to Nippon-Ham via domestic free agency in the 2024 offseason, but over his two seasons there he pitched strictly in relief at the top level and never put up standout numbers for a free-agent signing. According to his own note article, the club told him in August he wasn’t part of next year’s plans, but agreed to let him stay on through the end of the season — meaning his exit came with his own consent rather than as a one-sided release, a distinction worth noting. What dominated the thread wasn’t so much his stats as the gap between his academic pedigree — a Keio University Science & Engineering graduate who won the Fujihara Award — and his on-field results. It’s worth flagging that the Fujihara Award is commonly misunderstood: it’s awarded based on extracurricular activities as well as academic performance, so it doesn’t necessarily mean “top of the class.”
