  • Takezai Terunosuke: ‘If You’re Going to Compromise on a Live-Action Adaptation, Don’t Bother’ — 5ch Fires Back: ‘Being Too Faithful Is Pointless Too’

Actor Terunosuke Takezai, appearing on the ABEMA show “Uraaka Uraraka” streamed on the 17th, said of live-action manga adaptations: “If you’re going to compromise because you don’t have the budget, I’d rather you didn’t do it at all,” and “Respect for the source material is absolutely essential.” The 5ch thread that followed wasn’t just agreement — plenty pushed back with arguments like “If you’re just going to make it faithfully, you might as well read the original” and “If the director has no creative vision of their own, there’s no point adapting it,” citing specific works like Attack on Titan, Chiikawa, and Look Back as the debate grew into one about what “respect” for the source material actually means.

Manga and live-action are different mediums, so of course the way things are expressed will change — but I wish they'd keep away writers who delude themselves into thinking 'manga storytelling is childish, so let me improve it.'

It's the opposite. If the director isn't willing to tear the original apart to express their own creative vision, then don't bother making it — movie or anime. A work that's just a straight 'translation' is nothing but garbage pandering to fans of the original.

No idea who this guy is, but he sounds like a middle/high schooler.

Entertainment exists to make money. Of course you get creative and inventive to do that.

If the original creator doesn't like it, they can just turn the offer down.

And honestly, whether something 'respects' the source material is 100% subjective to whoever's watching anyway.

Machiyama Tomohiro, who the original author personally picked to write the screenplay, first wrote a script that followed the manga closely, but the author rejected it and asked for 'an original story the film can call its own, not just a retread of the manga.' That's how it ended up the way it did. And the author was the one who was happiest watching the finished film — so in a way, this adaptation showed the original creator maximum respect.

Take Look Back, where the anime made 2 billion yen but the live-action version flopped hard at just a few hundred million. The director's fans kept repeating things like 'actually, the live-action project got moving earlier' — maybe so, but to audiences it just looks like they took something already turned into an anime and live-action-ified it anyway, so saying that doesn't really change anything… that's the vibe. It's honestly startling how live-action defenders assume every single viewer already knows all these insider comments from people involved.
    60AnonymousOct 19, 2026 09:21
The example that comes to mind right away is Liar Game — there were character changes, but the story and the games themselves stuck completely to the original, so even fans of the source material found it enjoyable. I'm not saying you can't change anything, but as long as there's respect for the source material, well, it's fine.

    Re: #77
Isn't it precisely because that acceptance hasn't happened that they keep flopping across the board?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Takezai’s remark was just one comment on the ABEMA show “Uraaka Uraraka” and didn’t name any specific titles. What split the thread was how to even measure “respect for the source material.” Against those who championed faithful reproduction, others pushed back by pointing to the live-action Attack on Titan film, where the screenwriter added bold original developments at the original creator’s own request — and the finished film ended up being the thing the creator was happiest with — arguing that “faithfulness” doesn’t automatically equal “respect.” On the other hand, cases like the Chiikawa anime, which gets called out for being so faithful to the source that “you might as well just read the manga,” show there’s no simple right answer for what respect should look like. Criticism of casting popular talent purely to draw an audience also came up, but in places it veered from critiquing the work itself into attacks on individual actors’ looks or acting ability, so those portions have been left out of this article.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Entertainment] Terunosuke Takezai on live-action manga adaptations: ‘If you don’t have the budget and have to compromise, don’t bother’ — ‘Respect for the source material is absolutely essential’.”

  • PC vs PS5 Feud Flares Up Again, Even Bystanders Jump In — 5ch: “Can’t Be Helped”

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (commonly known as the “Geha” board), the long-running feud between PC gamers and PS5 users has flared up again, drawing in Xbox and Switch users who technically had no stake in the fight. The spark was a reaction to a pro-PC argument circulating on X (formerly Twitter): the thread saw clashes between the view that “if you have a PC, the PS5 is just a redundant, lesser alternative” and the counter-argument that “choosing based on price and convenience is perfectly reasonable.” As the discussion progressed, Xbox and Switch fans piled on too, each poking at the others’ weak points, turning it into a three-way free-for-all.

Compared to a straight 4060, the PS5 Pro actually performs better.
If you're going to buy a PC with something like a 3060, you'd be far better off just getting a PS5 Pro.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

This type of PC-vs-console argument is a recurring topic that regularly resurfaces on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (the “Geha” board), and this round was sparked by reactions to a pro-PC argument circulating on X. One comparison that came up later in the thread — that “the PS5 Pro’s GPU performance is roughly in the RTX 4060 to 4060 Ti class” — is only a rough benchmark-based estimate; actual performance depends on software optimization and architectural differences, so it shouldn’t be taken as a direct apples-to-apples comparison. The debate also started out as a straight PC-vs-PS5 matchup, but Xbox and Switch fans kept piling in one after another — a classic Geha-board chain reaction where, once a post attacks one piece of hardware, other camps jump in to tout their own side’s advantages too.

  • Ruling Party Floats Tax-Free Horse Racing Payouts Amid ‘Taxed Twice’ Complaints

Momentum is building within the ruling coalition to reconsider how winnings from public gambling like horse racing and keirin are taxed. Under the current system, organizers first take their cut (the “terasen,” or house take), and the remaining payout is then taxed again as “occasional income” — unlike lottery winnings, which are tax-free. This has fueled persistent complaints about being “taxed twice.” The calculation rules are also said to be so complicated that some bettors end up unintentionally flagged for failing to file or evading taxes. On 5ch, opinions were mixed: some argued losing tickets should be deductible against winnings, others suspected this is groundwork for future casino legalization, and still others insisted pachinko should be taxed first.

Within the ruling parties, debate has emerged over reforming the tax treatment of public gambling like horse racing and keirin, including making payouts tax-free. Complaints persist that it’s unfair for betting tickets to be taxed on top of having the organizer’s cut deducted, while lottery tickets stay tax-free. The filing rules are so complex that some bettors have been flagged for “tax evasion” without even realizing it. Still, if gambling activity expands, gambling addiction could rise too, so where this debate is headed remains unclear.

Even Winning Tickets Can Trigger Back Taxes

Under tax law, payouts from public gambling are classified as “occasional income” — windfall gains. Half of whatever remains after subtracting a special deduction of 500,000 yen and the cost of the winning tickets from the year’s total payouts is subject to tax. For payouts of 1 million yen, the tax comes to a few tens of thousands of yen; for 500,000 yen, it’s tax-free.

Laying the groundwork for tax-free public casinos, maybe?
    5AnonymousOct 17, 2026 23:35
Calling it "double taxation" is a stretch — one's the house cut, the other's tax.
Thinking you could gamble without a house cut in the first place is the weird part.
That said, I do think they should let you offset losing tickets against your winnings.
    7AnonymousOct 17, 2026 23:54
Another thing — if a race gets cancelled because a horse falls or whatever, organizers should refund the ticket buyers.
It's messed up that bettors have zero chance of winning once a race is scrapped, yet the organizer still pockets the money.
Even when 5-6 horses get caught up in a cancellation, it's still a total take… at that point it practically feels rigged.

    > The tax filing rules are said to be complicated and confusing,
    > unintentionally becoming "tax evasion"

Yeah, this is exactly why it should just be tax-free like the lottery.

By the way, once next year's food consumption tax drops to 1%,
the tax rate will swing by a full 9 points between takeout and eat-in,
so that'll cause plenty of unintentional "tax evasion" too —
let's all be sure to call that out just as harshly lol
    11AnonymousOct 18, 2026 00:17
    I've never bought a ticket myself, but…
taking a cut off the top as house take, then taxing you again if you win —

A house cut of 25% barely even qualifies as gambling at that point.
10% would be the reasonable ceiling.
And there's no causal link between gambling addiction and taxing winning tickets —
you'd see that if you thought in terms of "playtime" rather than amount of money.

At the very least, online betting — where fraud isn't really possible — should allow offsetting losses against winnings; anything less is absurd.
You can do it with stocks, FX, and crypto, so it's logically inconsistent that horse racing can't.

What brought this on all of a sudden?
Did some lawmaker rig a race and hit a long-shot payout?

If that's it, they might as well just give lawmakers blanket tax-exempt status on everything —

Pachinko's "three-shop system" exists because, back when only general prizes were allowed, organized crime would buy up the leftover prizes as a funding source,
and the resulting turf wars made public order worse — so the police themselves set it up as a stopgap.
Scrapping cash-outs would just take things back to how they were before; it'd be better to build a system that tracks how much customers spend and win, and fold that into the tax system.

Horse racing should just get the same 50% deduction as the lottery.
Stocks and gambling are things people do with spare cash, so taxing them more is fine —

Fair enough, thanks for the correction, and sorry about that.

Still, what's taxable is the profit. It ties into loss-offsetting too, but the core problem remains: ignoring the actual net result — both within "occasional income" itself and across the household's overall finances — leads to the contradiction of excessive taxation.
    71AnonymousOct 19, 2026 08:57
If it's going tax-free, I'll accept it — but only if the deduction rate also matches the lottery's.

    Re: #71
First things first, they need to properly tax pachinko.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Under income tax law, payouts from public gambling are classified as “occasional income,” and half of what remains after subtracting a 500,000 yen special deduction and the cost of winning tickets from the year’s total payouts becomes taxable. Because the cost of losing tickets generally isn’t recognized as a deductible expense, there are cases where big winners face unexpected back taxes. The thread split on two points: whether making payouts tax-free would boost betting activity and fuel gambling addiction, and how this debate might connect to the future taxation of public casinos or pachinko. Meanwhile, the article doesn’t clearly spell out that the organizer’s cut (the house take) deducted from payouts is an operating cost rather than a tax, and is a separate matter from taxation — so it’s worth being careful not to misread what the phrase “double taxation” is actually referring to.

  • Hanshin Coach Atsushi Fujimoto Abruptly Quits — 5ch: ‘Guess the Golden Age Is Over’

It was learned on October 18 that Atsushi Fujimoto (49), the Hanshin Tigers’ first-team general coach, has asked the club to let him go at the end of this season, and the club has accepted. Fujimoto joined the coaching staff in the 2014 offseason as second-team fielding and baserunning coach, and has served as first-team position players’ general coach since the 2025 season. The club reportedly tried to talk him out of it, but his resolve was firm and they accepted his resignation; Hanshin, aiming for a third straight title, now begins the search for a replacement. On 5ch, reactions split between shock that a departure would happen on a team in the middle of a title streak, and theories pinning it on manager Kyuji Fujikawa’s handling of the team and his lack of authority, with candidates for the successor also being thrown around.

Shockwave for back-to-back champion Hanshin — General Coach Fujimoto abruptly departs; club tried to retain him but accepted his firm decision; search begins for successor as team eyes third straight title

It was learned on the 18th that Hanshin’s first-team general coach Atsushi Fujimoto (49) will be leaving the club at the end of this season.

He reportedly submitted his resignation to the club, which had been accepted by this date. He joined the coaching staff in the 2014 offseason as second-team infield/baserunning coach, and became first-team position players’ general coach starting in the 2025 season.

Background and key points of this topic

Atsushi Fujimoto is a former infielder who played for the Kintetsu Buffaloes, Yakult Swallows, and Hanshin Tigers; he entered coaching in the 2014 offseason as Hanshin’s second-team fielding and baserunning coach, and has served as first-team position players’ general coach since 2025. In NPB, coaching staff changes typically happen during the post-season contract renewal period, and staff turnover isn’t unusual even on a championship-winning team. The club has only said that “his resolve was firm, and though they tried to retain him, they accepted his decision,” without disclosing a specific reason for the departure. What split opinion on the thread was whether to read this as routine personnel movement or as a sign of doubts about manager Kyuji Fujikawa’s handling of the team and his authority over it; framings like “Fujikawa’s one-man rule” or “scorched earth” are purely speculation from an anonymous message board and should be read as separate from facts the club has announced. Hiroyuki Imaoka’s name has also come up as a possible successor, but that too is just speculation within the thread, not an official club announcement.

  • Hitoshi Matsumoto Resurfaces on Broadcast TV — ‘DOWNTOWN+’ Ad Airs During Gaki no Tsukai’s Slot, Shows Him ‘Deep in Thought’

On the 18th’s broadcast of Downtown’s Gaki no Tsukai ya Arahende!, a commercial for Downtown’s new streaming service “DOWNTOWN+” aired, showing Hitoshi Matsumoto looking pensive. With Matsumoto himself still unable to appear in the studio, the fact that only footage of him aired on broadcast TV sparked questions on 5ch about the promotional approach — comments like “He’s not even in top form, so why push this so hard?” and “Not mentioning that it’s also on Netflix seems like a bad look” — along with speculation about what call the Gaki no Tsukai sponsors made. At the same time, some voices expressed hope for his return, leaving reactions split.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Hitoshi Matsumoto has avoided appearing on broadcast TV since a weekly magazine reported allegations against him at the end of 2023, and this commercial doesn’t feature him live either — it’s built from old footage, framed around the image of “Matsumoto deep in thought.” “DOWNTOWN+” is a paid subscription service streaming Downtown’s back catalog, and using a broadcast TV ad slot to promote it is itself an unusual move. The thread split into two camps: skepticism about why they’re promoting this so heavily while the man himself stays absent (why spend ad money on this now, and why not clarify its relationship to the Netflix release), versus comments welcoming the ad as a possible sign of an impending return to broadcast TV. Neither the article nor the thread confirms what judgment the show’s sponsors actually made about featuring Matsumoto — that remains unverified as fact.

Truly intelligent people are more focused on mastering their own craft as specialists

Background and key points of debate

Kinosuke Takezai previously made headlines with remarks like “99% of people with tattoos are…”, and on 5ch this latest “I hate idiots” comment was seen less as a one-off and more as a recurring pattern for him. The show itself is built around celebrities riffing on anonymous posts to a secret account, premised on the idea of “saying what you really think without fear of backlash.” What split opinion in the thread wasn’t so much whether the remark itself was acceptable, but where exactly to draw the line on “idiot” — with academic background, behavior, and conduct under anonymity all raised as separate yardsticks, creating a structure where anyone could plug in their own personal theory of what makes someone an idiot. At the same time, some comments also tied in judgments about the speaker himself and his past history, a classic example of how a celebrity’s remark can easily shift into commentary on the celebrity’s own character. What context or specific anecdote backed up the remark within the show itself isn’t made clear by the original article.

  • Love Live! 106th-Gen Reveal Sparks a 5ch Slugfest Over Livestream Viewer Counts

A thread titled “Why isn’t anyone hyped about today’s 106th-gen reveal?” popped up on 5ch’s Love Live! board — but instead of discussing the new unit reveal itself, it turned into a pitched battle between fans of Nijigasaki (虹), Hasunosora (蓮), and Liella (星, nicknamed “star” after “Superstar!!”) over whose livestream pulled bigger concurrent-viewer numbers. Posters threw out figures — 8,500 concurrent viewers for Nijigasaki’s broadcast, 15,000 for Hasunosora’s reveal, and just 500 for Liella’s JAXA collab stream — arguing over which series actually commands the most support. Opinions were split on the trending-chart rankings too.

Translator’s note: 5ch’s default anonymous handle on this board is “Anonymous Dreamer,” with a parenthetical tag auto-appended showing the poster’s mobile carrier or browser (a well-known site quirk, not a chosen username) — e.g. “Mushroom” and “SIM” below are just different devices, not different people. “>>21” means “replying to post #21,” and the trailing “w” is 5ch shorthand for laughter (like “lol”).

Nijigasaki, on the other hand, has never hit No. 1 at anything — livestreams included

    Background and talking points

The Love Live! franchise currently runs several parallel series — Nijigasaki, Hasunosora, and others — and fans of each camp frequently clash on 5ch’s Love Live! board over whose livestream concurrent-viewer counts or social-media trending rank prove superior. This thread followed the same pattern: there was little actual commentary on the new unit reveal itself, with most of the discussion consumed by Nijigasaki-vs-Hasunosora-vs-Liella number comparisons. It’s worth noting that concurrent-viewer counts swing heavily based on broadcast time slot, platform, and whether a collab tie-in is involved, so treating them as a clean popularity metric is shaky — and that pushback did surface within the thread itself. It’s also easy to misread the headline’s “isn’t hyped” as meaning the thread itself fell flat; in reality, the thread stayed lively right to the end, just fueled by inter-fandom sniping rather than reactions to the reveal.

    Re: #77
Yeah, that's exactly the kind of thing AI's good at

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Japan’s carriers phased out “3G” mobile service around 2024, meaning old-school flip phones have, in practical terms, become essentially unusable. Most devices currently sold and referred to as “garakei” (flip phones) are actually “garaho” — Android-based 4G devices with a button-style exterior but a smartphone’s innards underneath; calls and email work fine, but some apps aren’t supported, putting them in an awkward middle ground. What split opinion in the thread was whether Shimazaki’s comment was technically a true “flip phone” or actually describes a “garaho,” along with differing real-life takes on why people still keep a landline. Many commenters shared circumstances a smartphone alone can’t fully replace — credibility on contract paperwork, business necessity, peace of mind for elderly family members — while others noted that landlines these days get nothing but sales calls. A common misconception readers should watch out for is the idea that “flip phones are now completely unusable”: a 4G-capable garaho can still make calls and send email today.

  • VTuber Laplus Darkness Sparks Backlash After Calling Sexual Harassers ‘Gross’ and ‘Males’ — 5ch: ‘Well, They Are Males’

Hololive VTuber Laplus Darkness called out sexually charged comments from viewers using words like “gross” (kimoi) and “males” (osu), but the harshness of her language itself drew criticism and sparked a backlash. On 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo board, opinions split over whether the blame lies with those who sent the harassing comments or with her choice of words in calling them out. The thread also debated whether calling viewers “males” amounts to reverse sexism, and whether light-hearted trash talk between streamers can fairly be equated with harassment directed at listeners.

No, sexual harassment IS gross though.
If some lady kept needling you about being short, you'd snap too 😓
    43AnonymousOct 19, 2026 05:39
If she'd framed it more like "Being sexually harassed hurts, please stop" 😢,

everyone would've rushed to comfort her. She just handled it badly.
    44AnonymousOct 19, 2026 05:40
    Re: #43
Probably her pride wouldn't let her do that — it'd feel like losing 😓
    45AnonymousOct 19, 2026 05:41
    Re: #43
If you're going to do it, the move is to expose it:
"I got this awful comment: XX!" and lock in the victim position.
This time she went on the offensive instead, which looks bad, and outsiders have no idea what kind of harassment she actually got.
    48AnonymousOct 19, 2026 05:41
    Re: #43
It's not that she can't do that —
she's just the type who wants to say "I told them off good"
    instead.
    52AnonymousOct 19, 2026 05:42
    Re: #41
"I posted a creepy comment, but she scolded me with strong language! How dare she!"
Sorry, that just made even less sense to me.
    65AnonymousOct 19, 2026 05:47
    Re: #52
The thing is, they don't even realize their own comments are creepy.
So when they suddenly get stabbed with harsh words, they snap.
    55AnonymousOct 19, 2026 05:43
Doesn't Hololive have any compliance standards to begin with?
Calling your own viewers "males" should normally be a no-go…
    56AnonymousOct 19, 2026 05:44
    Re: #55
"Male" is just a fact though.
Now if she said "shitty male," sure, that'd read as an insult, but 😓
    61AnonymousOct 19, 2026 05:46
    Re: #55
Isn't this just her character concept and the way she's marketed, though?
    72AnonymousOct 19, 2026 05:55
    Whoa

    77AnonymousOct 19, 2026 05:57
This isn't really about the harassment itself — it's the "males"/"gross" remarks that are actually what's blowing up.
    86AnonymousOct 19, 2026 06:03
    Re: #77
Even so, the harassment is what triggered this in the first place.
Brushing that aside and just pushing the "her wording was bad" angle doesn't fly.
    84AnonymousOct 19, 2026 06:01
Wait, isn't the whole point of VTubers that it feels like talking to a girl friend?! 🤯🤢
    102AnonymousOct 19, 2026 06:17
    Re: #84
Do you sexually harass your girl friends?
    89AnonymousOct 19, 2026 06:06
Streamers trash-talking each other is just pro-wrestling-style banter.
Dragging that up to say "you did the same thing" is one thing, but that doesn't mean the listeners' harassment gets a free pass either.
    103AnonymousOct 19, 2026 06:17
    Re: #89
"You do it too" obviously doesn't hold up as an excuse,
but I don't think "it's just wrestling banter" holds up either.
    93AnonymousOct 19, 2026 06:08
Lol ("草"/kusa, forum slang for laughing)

    100AnonymousOct 19, 2026 06:16
Me (a girl) sexually harassing males is a legitimate right.
But you lot (mere males) sexually harassing girls is unacceptable.
Basically: know your place in the gender hierarchy.

    108AnonymousOct 19, 2026 06:23
The idea that "it's fine because of such-and-such" is itself the justification that enables harassment —
and here we've got two sides fighting who both don't get that.
    Truly ridiculous.
    110AnonymousOct 19, 2026 06:25
    Re: #108
It's not really that the streamer herself is justifying anything —
the weird part is people taking it that seriously in the first place.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Sexual comments from listeners have long been an issue in VTuber streams, but it’s rare for a streamer to push back with a blunt word like “gross” (kimoi) herself, and this time it was the sheer force of her language that split opinion. The debate boils down to two main points. First: is the problem the people sending the harassing comments, or her choice of words in calling them out? Second: her use of “males” (osu) was read by some as a reverse-sexist slur, prompting questions about Hololive’s compliance stance. Meanwhile, criticism of the notion that “women’s sexual desire is pure, so it’s fine” has also been prominent, turning the existence of a gender-based double standard into its own point of contention. Note that the thread also saw baseless speculation about her real identity (such as her voice or nationality), but since that amounts to unsubstantiated personal attacks, this article does not cover it.

  • Ami Tanimoto’s TikTok Live Floods 5ch with Comments — “Once You Hear Water Running, She’s Definitely in the Bathroom”

Tsubaki Factory’s official X (formerly Twitter) account announced that Ami Tanimoto would go live on her personal TikTok account starting around 9:30 PM. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, a running commentary thread kicked off the moment the stream began — but the reactions focused less on the broadcast itself than on the viewing experience: an “HTTP ERROR 403” that blocked anyone trying to open TikTok in a browser, an odd-looking filter effect, and the sound of running water that had commenters wondering aloud, “Is she streaming from the bathroom?” There were also comments noting that her usual Instagram Live audience is always the same familiar faces, with some hoping TikTok might bring in new fans.

Today‼️ Starting around 9:30 PM, #AmiTanimoto will go live on TikTok on her personal account!

If you don’t have TikTok yet, download it, follow her, and be ready to watch! 🫶🏻🫶🏻

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Trying to watch TikTok in a PC browser while not logged in can trigger a 403 error, which means only people who have an account set up on their phone can reliably watch a stream. The repeated “can’t watch it” and “made an account on my phone” comments in the thread stem directly from this technical limitation. It’s also worth noting that more Hello! Project members have been running personal TikTok accounts in recent years, and comments comparing viewer counts with Instagram Live, or pointing out differences in video quality and filters between streams, reflect a fan pattern of focusing on peripheral details — which app, and how it looks — rather than the content of the stream itself. What actually divided the thread wasn’t how exciting the stream was, but rather frustration over the inconvenient viewing experience and the observation that her regular Instagram Live audience is “always the same faces” — neither of which was really a judgment on the quality of the broadcast itself.
