  • Brighton Thrash Bitter Rivals 5-0, Mitoma Left Out — 5ch: ‘No Spot for Him Anymore’

In Matchweek 7 of the Premier League on the 18th, Brighton — home of Kaoru Mitoma — thrashed Crystal Palace, the club of Daichi Kamada, 5-0 at home. The fixture, dubbed the “M23 Derby” due to a rivalry dating back to the 1970s, saw Mitoma left out of the squad entirely as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury, while Kamada started. Brighton have been on a scoring spree, netting 23 goals in their last 7 matches, and the thread was divided over why the team is thriving despite key players being sidelined, as well as over what the future holds for Mitoma.

◆ Premier League Matchweek 7: Brighton 5-0 Crystal Palace (18th)

Brighton, home to Japan international midfielder Kaoru Mitoma, hosted Crystal Palace, home to Japan international midfielder Daichi Kamada and Japan international defender Takehiro Tomiyasu. Mitoma, still recovering from his hamstring injury, and the injured Tomiyasu were both left out of the squad. Kamada, however, started as the undisputed regular he has become.

The clash between the two sides, whose rivalry has simmered since the 1970s, is known as the “M23 Derby” — a fiery affair despite the clubs not even being geographically close. While the fixture is always expected to be a tight, hard-fought contest, this time it was Brighton, who have been piling up goals all season, who ran out emphatic 5-0 winners.

That's because the teams without Japanese players are strong, and the ones with them are weak.

    Sweden international Ayari…

He was an annoying player to deal with in the Japan match too
    (in a good way)
    4AnonymousOct 19, 2026 11:11
Kubo and Mitoma both just got their timing wrong, I guess — well, that's just how it is.
    5AnonymousOct 19, 2026 11:12
There's no place for Mitoma anymore.
He'll be shipped out this winter.
    6AnonymousOct 19, 2026 11:12
Even once he recovers from injury, there's no spot for Mitoma now.
    Just transfer out already.
    9AnonymousOct 19, 2026 11:25
Crystal Palace are in worse shape than Brighton, surely.
    10AnonymousOct 19, 2026 11:29
Mitoma's current injury is a lingering effect from being taken to the Asian Cup and played while his muscle strain hadn't even healed yet.
If the national team manager weren't Moriyasu, who doesn't look after players' conditions, he'd be in a different place by now.

This is that stretch — and it won't last long lol

Mitoma's crossing and finishing are poor, after all.
His dribbling and ball control are good though.
    16AnonymousOct 19, 2026 11:35
That said, it's not like the left side has been consistently great either, so I think he'll get his chance once he's back from treatment.

    Re: #17
And quietly, Ayari's goal was basically a deflection off Kanbo too, so that's effectively another gift goal.

Even when they slip up, the whole team is committed to never letting the opponent transition, so once Brighton win the ball back everyone piles forward aggressively.

They only play with flair when the situation allows it — and once a player decides he can't beat his man, a backward-pass merchant like Mitoma just doesn't fit this team anymore.
    19AnonymousOct 19, 2026 11:41
Brighton are just too strong this season.
They might seriously win the title.
    22AnonymousOct 19, 2026 11:55
He's been treated badly at Brighton — if he'd gone to another club, he wouldn't have ended up this much of a benchwarmer (スペ, short for "spare," i.e. a reserve player), Premier League or not.

    Mitoma

Mitoma tore his thigh muscle stretching his leg out to control a long ball from behind while sprinting at full speed.
That's just not the kind of play a player approaching 30 should attempt late in a match when his muscles are fatigued.
He's already been out for close to half a year now.

So basically, Mitoma is the reason they couldn't win.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The “M23 Derby” is a nickname for a rivalry dating back to the 1970s between two clubs that aren’t even geographically close, and it’s known as one of the most heated matchups in the Premier League. The thread was divided over the cause of Mitoma’s injury, with some claiming it’s a lingering effect of being forced to play at the Asian Cup, and others claiming it happened landing awkwardly during an official Premier League match — it’s worth noting both theories remain unconfirmed hearsay. Also, the allegations of financial rule violations against Manchester City mentioned in the thread are an ongoing, unresolved case still under review, not a finalized punishment.</analysis>

  • Downtown Plus Hit by Wave of Cancellations Before Even Hitting One Year — 5ch Dubs It ‘Schrödinger’s Matsumoto Hitoshi’

Claims that the streaming service “Downtown Plus” is struggling less than a year after launch have spread across 5ch. With annual subscriptions set to renew next month, threads buzzed with reports that even members who signed up for a full year right from the start are now talking about canceling. Posters also raised the fact that the service has begun partial distribution on Netflix, and that Hamada Masatoshi’s appearances have been kept to a bare minimum. Meanwhile, some argued “we don’t actually know if membership has really dropped,” and opinions were split over the reliability of the widely reported figure of 500,000 subscribers.

    1AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:08
Renewal time for annual contracts is next month, but even the diehards who signed up for a full year from day one are flooding in with cancellation announcements
Maybe Dow-Pla can't make it on its own — they've started streaming some of it on Netflix too
Has Hamada already written it off? He's barely involved anymore

Not sure if it's true, but apparently when people expected him to apologize to Ozawa, he instead got defensive and snapped, 'You introduced me to some seriously messed-up women, you know that?'
He's probably not going to appear on the show, and besides, Ozawa had already resumed his entertainment career
Seems like in the TV industry, the read is: Matsumoto got cut loose, and Ozawa got forgiven
    84AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:47
    Re: #71
    Yeah, that's about right
Though whether there's even demand for Ozawa is looking tough too

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Downtown Plus is a paid streaming service that Matsumoto Hitoshi launched after failing to get the outcome he wanted in his lawsuit over the sexual misconduct allegations and pulling back from network television, with co-starring appearances alongside Hamada Masatoshi serving as its main selling point. What split opinion in the thread was whether membership is genuinely declining: some pointed to cancellation reports circulating on social media as evidence of a downturn, while others countered that no official membership figures have ever been released, so the real situation is unknown. The “500,000 members” figure mentioned in media reports also came with no cited source, and questions about its reliability kept coming up in the thread. Readers should keep in mind that neither the reports of a wave of cancellations nor the membership figure itself have been confirmed by an official statement from those involved or verified by a third party.

  • Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG’s Massive Overseas Ban List Overhaul Sparks Debate Over the Gap With Japan’s OCG

TCG, the overseas counterpart to Japan’s Yu-Gi-Oh! OCG, implemented a major Forbidden & Limited list update effective October 19. The changes mainly target splashable “engine” staples, bridge/extender gimmicks, and generic lock-down power cards, with players overseas saying the game has “basically become a different game.” On 5ch, threads erupted with complaints about the gap between this and Japan’s OCG rules, as well as frustration with the current meta where whoever goes first simply locks the game down and wins outright — discussion also spread to the strength of individual cards like Dragoon and Magicians’ Soul.

    1AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:07
Apologize for ever printing those 34 now-banned cards in the first place.
    3AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:08

Honestly I'm surprised garbage meta cards like Spell Shield Type-8 didn't get banned.
Though, cards that are easy to summon and negate anything, or just pad out combos for no reason, are lame anyway, so banning them is fair enough.
Still think Droll & Lock Bird ("Doroba," a staple hand trap) should get banned too.
    14AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:15
So disruption cards and busted Extra Deck power cards are the main targets, huh. Fine by me since disruption-heavy stuff is gross, but why ban Magicians' Soul? Is the Dark Magician deck really that strong? Is the Golden Castle of Light build any good?
    16AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:18
    Re: #14
Apparently this ban wave is aimed at killing off the splashable engine parts, bridge-type cards, and lock pieces that are popular overseas.
Magicians' Soul seems to have gotten hit because it's run in full 60-card Light/Dark decks.
    17AnonymousOct 19, 2026 13:18
    Re: #13
Totally agree on the garbage meta cards.
There's "good Droll" and "evil Droll," so Limited is probably as far as they can push it.
    Re: #14
Soul(s) probably got banned for being a splashable draw engine.
They banned Dragoon too, so honestly the whole "destruction" gimmick is pretty much dead now.

    Current OCG is seriously rough.
If you lose Game 1 after going second,
then in Game 2, even going first yourself, you're dead unless you can fully shut down an opponent who's lazily stacked every clutch comeback staple in the book (lit. "lazy Goemon piled with turnaround cards" — forum slang for a loaded-up grindy board).

    Re: #73
Generic power cards are just boring, honestly.
All that's left as a measure of strength becomes "whichever deck can splash generic cards easiest." Every time a generic card with nothing to do with the archetype's theme gets summoned, the game stops being make-believe and turns into pointless solitaire.

    Re: #80
Dragoon itself isn't even that strong anymore, it's just a single piece of disruption.
It's more that gimmicks popped up letting you summon Dragoon easily, and that's what caused this.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Yu-Gi-Oh! runs separate Forbidden/Limited card lists for Japan’s domestic “OCG” and the North American/European “TCG,” and since the card pools and release schedules also differ between the two, the degree of regulation often ends up different as well. This round of TCG changes appears aimed at curbing the first-turn lockdown (so-called “solitaire”) meta built around splashable engine parts, bridge/extender gimmicks, and generic disruption power cards, and some in the thread pointed to declining overseas tournament turnout as the backdrop. Meanwhile, complaints have also surfaced about Japan’s domestic OCG, where more and more archetypes can’t be stopped by hand traps alone once the opponent takes the first turn — so even though the regions differ, “the strength of generic cards” and “the gap between archetypes” are shaping the meta in both places alike.

  • Man in His 20s Scammed Out of ¥15,000 After Falling for ‘¥1.2 Billion Jackpot’ Text — 5ch Reacts: ‘Hope That ¥1.2 Billion Shows Up Soon’

A man in his 20s, a company employee living in Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture, was reportedly scammed out of roughly ¥15,000 after a “You’ve won ¥1.2 billion!” text message led him to a site that told him he needed to pay a “deposit.” Following the instructions, he bought prepaid e-money cards at a convenience store three separate times and handed over the card numbers to the scammer, according to police. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, the news drew a wave of mocking replies like “Hope that ¥1.2 billion gets transferred soon,” alongside genuine surprise that “even someone in their 20s these days falls for this kind of scam,” with posters also comparing it to other scams targeting young people, like the “yami baito” (shady under-the-table job) schemes.

On October 2, a man in his 20s, a company employee living in Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture, was the victim of a scam in which a “You’ve won ¥1.2 billion!” notification on his smartphone led him to be defrauded of roughly ¥15,000 worth of e-money usage rights.

According to police, on October 2 a text message notification reading “You’ve won ¥1.2 billion!” arrived on the smartphone of a man in his 20s, a company employee living in Kakegawa City.

To pay the “temporary deposit” listed on the site he was directed to, the man followed the scammer’s instructions and bought e-money cards at a convenience store on three separate occasions. He relayed the card numbers to the scammer and was defrauded of approximately ¥15,000, police said.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

This report describes a classic case of SMS fraud disguised as a fake “lottery win” notification. Having victims relay e-money card numbers is a method that’s hard to trace, making it one of the scam types most frequently reported to police. The thread title’s phrase “heading to the police” is the thread’s own ironic flourish — the original article was actually published after the fraud had already come to light and police had explained the case, meaning the man isn’t still sitting around waiting for his ¥1.2 billion to arrive. Within the thread, reactions ranged from surprise that “even people in their 20s these days fall for this,” to comparisons with other scams targeting young people such as “yami baito” shady job schemes, to posters sharing their own experiences with similar solicitation emails. A notable feature of the thread was how mocking jabs at the victim coexisted with sober observations that “anyone could be tricked.”

  • Fukumura Sei Says ‘No Skipping Baths Before Shows’ — Her Message to Fans Goes Viral

Fukumura Sei, who continues performing as a Hello! Project OG, called out to the crowd during the MC segment of a release event: “Think about how fun today was and soak in the bathtub — no skipping your bath before a show!” The moment blew up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. “Furo-kyan” (bath-skip) is otaku slang for skipping a bath or shower before rushing to a live venue, and it had usually been told as an anecdote about a different member. Because Fukumura herself brought it up this time, the thread filled with fans’ concrete stories about body odor at venues and how the smell varies from one venue to another.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“Furo-kyan” (bath-skip) is otaku slang originally referring to skipping a bath or shower in order to make it to a live show on a packed schedule, and among Hello! Project fans it had long been told as an anecdote about a different member. In the thread, some reactions tied this remark back to that member’s running joke, but others pointed out, “For Fukumura this is probably just about otaku smelling horrendously bad, plain and simple,” and the prevailing view was that her call-out was simply meant as a countermeasure against body odor at venues. Multiple fans also shared firsthand experiences of how the smell changes depending on a venue’s size and audience makeup, with some noting that the odds of running into a bad smell go up at halls and joint events, while others recommended antiperspirants or baking soda — making for an interesting look at a worry unique to live venues.

  • Hideki Matsui’s Name Surfaces for Next Giants Manager — Kiyoshi Nakahata: ‘The Promise to Nagashima, the Time Has Come’

Kiyoshi Nakahata (72), chairman of the Yomiuri Giants’ alumni association, named Hideki Matsui (52) as a candidate for the team’s next manager during TBS’s “Sunday Morning” broadcast on the 18th, saying, “The promise I made with [Shigeo] Nagashima… it feels like the timing has finally ripened.” The club is reportedly set to pick its next manager mainly from among its alumni, with Yoshinobu Takahashi (51) and Masahiro Kawai (62) also seen as candidates. On 5ch, a thread reacting to the news split over whether Matsui genuinely wants the manager’s job, with optimists facing off against skeptics who said, “He’s had chances before and never taken them.”

Ichiro's baseball showdowns against JK (high-school girls) have basically become his life's work, and he has zero intention of coming back to Japanese baseball.
Matsui's been dragged along to join in on that and it's gotten too awkward for him to back out now, so he's not going to become manager either.
    85AnonymousOct 19, 2026 12:15

My prediction for the Chunichi manager:
    Favorite: Ibata
    Dark horse: Kudoh
    Long shot: Nomo

And my prediction [for the Giants] is:
    Favorite: Matsui
    Dark horse: Hara
    Outside long shot: Uehara

I think the Giants are honestly in a critical state as a franchise right now. They don't have a single star player.
They've become such a forgettable team that you can't even guess who'd bat DH.
Only Matsui or Hara can turn this around. My guess is they'll sign Reyes and also reach out to someone like Yamakawa.

Where exactly am I supposed to look to think "Manager Matsui" sounds competent?
Can a guy with zero coaching experience even function as a leader?
Even if he becomes manager, he'll get beaten up by criticism and end up quitting.
The manager isn't the one playing — the players are.
Well, Matsui himself probably knows that, which is why he's hesitating… probably.

Well, even if Reyes falls through, they'll definitely go after a DH/cleanup hitter.
Could be from MLB, could be a big trade. There's no real big fish left in free agency.
If Chunichi hadn't gone with Kudoh, it might've been someone like Uehara, but now that it's Kudoh, I think the Giants feel the pressure too.
My guess is it ends up being Matsui or Hara.

Isn't this happening because Hara's running away from Kudoh, who thrashed him in the [Japan] Series?

Background and Key Points of This Story

The Giants’ managerial succession has been proceeding behind the scenes, centered on team alumni, and the pattern of insiders’ remarks leaking out ahead of any official announcement has repeated itself here. One thing readers can easily miss is that the “promise to Nagashima” Nakahata mentioned isn’t the club’s official position — it’s based solely on his own remarks. The thread split over whether Matsui genuinely wants the manager’s job: optimists argued “the emotional friction is gone now, so he’s motivated,” while skeptics countered, “He’s had chances before and never acted on them.” A misconception also circulated that “only college graduates can become Giants manager,” but as the cases of Sadaharu Oh and Tsuneo Horiuchi show, no such educational requirement actually exists. Candidates also include Yoshinobu Takahashi and Masahiro Kawai, and it’s worth remembering that at this stage Matsui is just one name among several candidates.

  • Tsubaki Factory to Perform at Osaka’s “Yoi Don! Fest” — 5ch Reacts: “The Price Is So Low It’s Worrying”

A thread went up on 5ch’s “Hello! Project” board announcing that Tsubaki Factory will perform at “Kantele Matsuri! 2026 Yoi Don! Fest,” a Kansai TV (Kantele)-affiliated event being held on November 22, 2026, at Ogimachi Park in Osaka. As part of an “Idol Special Live,” the group will reportedly share the same viewing slot as “PG,” a vocal and dance group made up of elementary and middle schoolers. The thread filled with a mix of surprised reactions to the cheap 1,500 yen advance ticket price and puzzled comments about pairing groups with such different age ranges.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“Yoi Don!” is a long-running local Kansai information program on the Kantele (Kansai TV) network, and every autumn it holds a free or low-cost fan event tied to the show, “Yoi Don! Fest,” at Ogimachi Park in Osaka. The 1,500 yen advance ticket price is cheap even compared to underground idol shows in the city center, and the surprise in the thread likely stems largely from the event’s positioning as a public broadcast taping and local fan-appreciation gathering rather than a typical ticketed idol show. At the same time, it’s not necessarily standard for Hello! Project-affiliated groups to appear at Kansai TV program events, and some comments in the thread speculated about inter-network dynamics, suggesting “MBS is cozy with Juice=Juice” — but this is just one user’s impression, not a substantiated fact. The co-performing group “PG” is a vocal and dance group made up of elementary and middle schoolers, and the thread also showed some puzzlement over pairing groups with such different age ranges. This article excludes posts that disparage Tsubaki Factory members personally or sexualize minors.

  • Former Morning Musume Member Kaori Iida Shows Off Homemade Bento — 5ch Thread Ends Up All About the Bus Tour and Kikkoman (Again)

Kaori Iida (45), former member of Morning Musume, posted six photos on her Instagram showing a week’s worth of homemade bento boxes she made for her children. She wrote that the post “might help prevent menu overlap,” and the photos packed with a wide variety of side dishes drew attention — but rather than commenting on the bento itself, most of the reactions on 5ch dug up the oolong tea and banana episode from her 2006 “wealth-gap bus tour” fan event, turning the thread into a reminder of just how persistently a nearly 20-year-old bit still gets brought up.

Kaori Iida shares a week’s worth of homemade bento for her kids — daughter’s “favorite character” makes a cameo: “The daily nutritional balance and variety… it’s really impressive!”

Kaori Iida (45), former Morning Musume member, updated her Instagram on the 18th, showing off a week’s worth of varied homemade bento boxes for her children.

Iida wrote, “It’s such a nice, warm Sunday~ Between errands, I always end up thinking about tomorrow’s menu and bento while I shop — it’s become part of my daily routine. Here’s a roundup of last week’s bentos. Might help prevent menu overlap!!” along with six photos of bentos packed full of a variety of side dishes.

Background and Context of This Topic

Kaori Iida became a fixture of 5ch’s running jokes after a 2006 fan event called the “wealth-gap bus tour,” where she handed out banana pieces cut down to tiny portions and served unbranded oolong tea (actually made by Kikkoman) — behavior fans at the time slammed as “stingy” and “cheap.” Nearly 20 years on, with some commenters even pointing out that next July marks exactly the 20th anniversary, that old material still dominates. Even with this wholesome bento post, the thread follows the same pattern: references to the old “bus tour” and “Kikkoman oolong tea” jokes pile up before anyone even gets to discussing the actual bento. Genuine reactions to the bento itself (comments on nutritional balance or how brown the food looks) make up only a small slice of the thread; the real focus is almost the question of “how long is this old joke going to keep getting dragged out?” Words that might seem random to readers unfamiliar with the backstory — banana, oolong tea, amniotic fluid, and so on — all trace back to this old episode.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Geinou Supo Sokuhou+) thread “[Entertainment] Former Morning Musume member Kaori Iida shows off a week’s worth of homemade bento for her children: “The daily nutritional balance and variety… it’s really impressive!”“

  • New Buzzword ‘Known-Content-Rumination Guy’ Sparks Debate — 5ch: ‘Dopamine Kids vs. Known-Content Geezers’

A thread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board reported that the term “Known-Content-Rumination Guy” — referring to “a middle-aged man who’s lost the stamina to digest new content and only touches stuff he’s already familiar with” — had started trending. Posters piled on with examples like remastered titles outselling new releases, and the feeling of being overwhelmed by the sheer volume of new manga volumes, while others pushed back, arguing it’s really a problem on the creators’ side, who can only churn out rehashes. The thread showed a clear split in tone: some embraced this return to nostalgia, while others saw it as a kind of age-based excuse-making.

and if that's the case, it's a creator problem.
    6AnonymousOct 19, 2026 10:26
Yeah, I barely go anywhere except Hello! Project stuff either.
    8AnonymousOct 19, 2026 10:28
    For me it's manga.
Every so often I think "alright, let's read some manga" and head to a bookstore, and I get overwhelmed by the sheer number of new releases.
On top of that, each series runs way too long with way too many volumes.
I know it'd probably be fun if I actually read it.
But picking it up feels like way too much effort.
So I just keep re-reading the same old Dokuro Bozu and Punk Ponk (old manga titles he already owns) forever.
    9AnonymousOct 19, 2026 10:29
Honestly, the guy checking X trends on a Monday morning and excitedly starting a thread about it is pretty "that" himself, if you ask me.

The last few days "Fishing Freak Sanpei" has been going viral, and the moment it did, creepy old guys lit up like fish back in water, going on and on about Takao Yaguchi — it's kind of hilarious.
"This is an era I can actually talk about!"
    12AnonymousOct 19, 2026 10:32
Part of it is that picking up something new feels like too much effort, but part of it is also just feeling like you've already had enough.
    13AnonymousOct 19, 2026 10:36
Hello! Project would've gone extinct without that.
    14AnonymousOct 19, 2026 10:38
Plenty of Hello! Project fans despised even Buono!, you know — because it wasn't built around the "known" thing (Tsunku).
    15AnonymousOct 19, 2026 10:41
I mean, content has always just been stuff to trick kids with, in every era.
People just keep clinging for life to whatever tricked them when they were kids.
There are just grown-up kids out there.

"Guy Living in the Past" fits better, if you ask me.

Maybe it's fine for us to just live in the past now.
We've got more past than we can even handle.
Let's just savor it slowly — that kind of vibe.

On the flip side, I think it's genuinely impressive when middle-aged and older folks can still get hooked on whatever drama or movie is trending right now.

So does someone who only listens to Hello! Project count as one of these guys?
    23AnonymousOct 19, 2026 10:45
New releases aren't necessarily good anyway.
They're full of nothing but rehashes and watered-down versions.

    Re: #57
Nah, you're surprisingly just rotating through a handful of favorites anyway.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The term “Known-Content-Rumination Guy” is itself a coinage that originated in this thread — there’s no official statistic or definition behind it. The backdrop includes the real-world fact that ports and remasters often outsell new releases, along with an oversupply problem where the sheer number of new manga and anime releases each year has become too much to keep up with. The thread split between two views: one framing this as “declining stamina and motivation,” and the other arguing that “creators themselves can only produce rehashes” — the latter view, which questions the quality of new releases themselves, drew fairly strong support. There was also a current of opinion affirming the act of returning to nostalgic favorites outright, pointing to the idea that nostalgia helps stabilize one’s mental state. What readers may easily misread is that none of this is based on any actual trend survey or poll — it’s purely a clash of gut feelings and personal theories within 5ch itself.

  • Right After Hanshin Fans’ ‘One More Strike!’ Chant, Yokohama’s Mimori Delivers the Decisive Hit — CS Swings on a Dime

On 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G (Live Sports Commentary) board, a Climax Series game from two days ago got dug back up and became a hot topic. The spark was a moment where, right after Hanshin fans sent up their customary “One more strike!” chant, Yokohama’s Mimori delivered a hit that flipped the momentum. The thread’s discussion ranged from in-game analysis (“There’s a ghost haunting Koshien,” “Why’d he throw it high?”) to criticism of the Climax Series format itself, with posters arguing the pennant winner’s advantage is far too small. Some replies mockingly dragged manager Kyuji Fujikawa into the jinx, drawing pushback like “This is about the fans — Fujikawa has nothing to do with it,” so reactions to the jinx were far from unanimous.

Nobody coordinated it, yet everyone sent their balloons up together — when it comes to comedy, even ordinary fans operate at a pro level (nod to the Hanshin tradition of releasing balloons in the 7th inning).

It's precisely because they secretly sense a hit coming in a big jam
that Kansai folks just can't stop doing the jinx-inducing "one more strike" chant — it's in their blood.

He's getting teased online as "Atogawa Ikkuji" (a pun mixing "one more pitch" with Fujikawa's old "One-Pitch Boy" nickname), but if you think about it, this is all on the fans — Fujikawa himself has nothing to do with it.

    Re: #98
Your mistake was assuming Mimori plays for the BayStars.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The “one more strike” chant is considered a jinx because of an incident in the 2003 Japan Series, when Hanshin’s closer at the time, Kyuji Fujikawa, came within one pitch of sealing the win but got hit — earning him the mocking nickname “Ikkuji” (“One-Pitch Boy”). Ever since, fans have passed down a jinx in which sending up this chant while ahead gets the team reversed. This time, the thread lit up because it felt like history repeating itself, but since Fujikawa is no longer an active player and had no direct involvement in this particular play, some posters pointed out that “tying the fans’ behavior back to Fujikawa misses the point” — worth noting is how excitement over the jinx coexisted with discomfort at dragging an individual into the joke. It’s also worth remembering that the Climax Series format lets a team with a better regular-season record still lose to a lower-ranked one, so complaints about how small the pennant winner’s advantage is amount to criticism of the format itself, not of any particular team — the two should be read separately.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “Hanshin fans: “One more strike! lol One more strike lol!” Yokohama’s Mimori: “(CRACK)” Hanshin fans: “…”“.
