  • Are Jump’s Current Series ‘Small Potatoes’? Chart of Legendary Hits’ First-Print Runs Goes Viral

On 5ch’s “Live News G” board, posters debated whether Weekly Shonen Jump’s current lineup has gotten “small-time.” The thread weighed in on ongoing series like Sakamoto Days, Akane-banashi, and Kagurabachi, while also posting a ranking of first-print runs for legendary hits — One Piece (4.05 million copies) and Demon Slayer (3.95 million copies) among them — as a point of comparison with today’s titles. Some brought up Frieren’s year-long hiatus over at Shogakukan’s Sunday, while others pointed out how often One Piece itself goes on break, making both the quality of current series and the hiatus problem plaguing flagship titles hot topics.

Seriously, Jump's reached a point where you could swap it with Kairakuten (a hentai manga magazine) and nobody'd notice.

    Frieren's small-time, it only sells 600–800k copies.
If Sunday's leaning on that, it's done for either way.

Needs to be putting out at least a million copies minimum.
    7AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:14
The people actually running in the magazine all know it too, right.
    That part.
    9AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:14
The editor who built up Dandadan went independent and poached the author, right?

    Re: #76
My Hero Academia's actually pretty low on the list, huh.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “first-print run rankings” posted in the thread refer to the initial print run for each series’ first collected volume — not total sales across the whole series or a measure of current popularity. First-print numbers are also shaped by a publisher’s expectations and print-run decisions, so they shouldn’t be read as a simple popularity ranking. The thread also raised the view that “One Piece has lost popularity because it goes on hiatus so often,” but Case Closed (Detective Conan) and Hunter × Hunter are both well known for frequent hiatuses too, so hiatus frequency doesn’t necessarily track with popularity. As for Kagurabachi, the author’s health issues are known to be one reason behind the irregular publication schedule, which should be considered separately from any judgment of the collected volumes’ quality or content. Opinions in the thread were split between those calling the current lineup “small-time” and others praising Sakamoto Days, Akane-banashi, and Kagurabachi.

  • ‘Psikyo Memories’ Collects All 12 Psikyo Shooters, Launching for Switch 2/PS5 in February 2027

Ediia has announced that “Psikyo Memories” will launch for Nintendo Switch 2 and PS5 on February 18, 2027. The collection bundles all 12 of Psikyo’s arcade shooters, including “Strikers 1945” and “Gunbird,” but commenters on the thread were quick to point out that “the content is probably just the existing PS port” and “the rights just moved from City Connection to a Korean company.” The pricing — 7,480 yen for the standard edition and 16,280 yen for the special edition — also drew complaints, with many noting these titles have sold for just a few hundred yen in past sales. The reasons behind the exclusion of titles running on other companies’ hardware, like Zero Gunner 1 and 1945PLUS, also became a topic of discussion.

    Re: #74
The collection was never sold digitally to begin with.
That's because it's really just a bundle of the individual download versions.
When you plug the cartridge into the console, each included title shows up as its own separate icon you can play standalone — that's all it is.
This pattern is common on Switch, where the digital versions are sold individually and the cartridge is just a bundled package of them.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Psikyo was a developer behind numerous 1990s arcade shooters, though the company itself has since dissolved. The rights to its titles later passed to City Connection, which had already distributed them individually and as a collection on Switch/PS4. This new “Psikyo Memories” is a repackaging through Ediia, working with a new rights holder (reportedly a Korean company), and multiple thread commenters pointed out that the included content appears to simply reuse the existing PS port data. There are two main points of contention. First is the question of why re-release on a new platform at all when the content hasn’t changed — a strong source of frustration among people who already own the older versions or bought them cheap in a sale, given the price. Second is the matter of missing titles: with Zero Gunner 1 (Sega Model 2 hardware), 1945PLUS (Neo Geo hardware), and Space Bomber all left out, commenters speculate that rights clearance for other companies’ hardware may be the obstacle. One thing readers might easily misread is that “all 12 titles” does not mean “every Psikyo game ever made” — it’s worth remembering that this is really just a bundle of the titles whose rights happened to be cleared.

  • Video of beer dumped out instantly at the ballpark sparks debate — 5ch: ‘Decency and rights are two different things’

A video showing a man buying draft beer from a ballpark beer vendor only to pour it out on the spot went viral on social media, sparking discussion on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyō G” (Live Commentary General) board. The act is believed to be aimed at boosting the vendor’s sales figures, and commenters clashed between defenders who, citing the vendors’ commission-based pay, called it “more rational than tipping,” and critics who argued “if you’re going to waste the booze, at least hand it out to the people around you.” Some compared it to padding a host club or hostess club employee’s sales numbers, while sharper critiques called it “tacky — decency and rights are two different things” or simply “an old Showa-era mindset.” The thread ended up split between praise and criticism.

Today's a weekday, so there are more students and NEETs (not in education, employment, or training), hence more praise

I was in the thread yesterday too — yeah, it was nothing but criticism

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Ballpark draft-beer vendors often earn a commission on top of their base pay, which is thought to be the real motivation behind “contributing to sales even by dumping the beer without drinking it.” The thread touched on this commission structure, with some pointing out that boosting official, company-tracked sales pays off better than a personal tip would. The debate largely split into two camps: one rejecting the act of wasting alcohol on principle, and the other defending it on the grounds that “it’s his own money to spend as he likes” — with many drawing comparisons to boosting sales for host club or hostess club staff. Note that one post claimed the previous day’s thread (same series) leaned more critical while today’s leaned more approving, chalking the shift up to different user demographics posting on weekdays versus holidays — but this is just one user’s personal theory, not a backed statistic, so it should be taken with a grain of salt.

  • Is Piling Rice on the Back of the Fork Really Proper Manners? 5ch Says: ‘Fake Showa-Era Urban Legend’

A personal story went viral on social media after a stranger told a woman at a restaurant that “proper manners require eating rice balanced on the back of your fork.” On 5ch, many commenters argued this eating style is actually a myth that spread during Japan’s Showa era and isn’t standard practice in the West at all — while others pointed to real regional differences, noting that “the British style puts food on the back of the fork, while the American style uses the front.” The discussion expanded into other “correct way to eat” debates, like whether to twirl pasta on a fork or the quirks of eating fried rice with a Chinese soup spoon, with opinions split down the middle.

And serving rice with chopsticks stuck straight up in it — that's the Chinese style.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The practice of “piling rice on the back of the fork” is said to have been widely taught in Japanese school education and etiquette books during the Showa era, but actual Western dining customs vary considerably by region. Within the thread, commenters themselves pointed out that “the British style uses the back, the American style uses the front” and “France uses the front too,” showing there’s no single, unified “overseas manner.” The same goes for whether or not to twirl pasta — tourist-facing performances and locals’ everyday eating habits are easily confused on this point. What readers can easily get wrong is assuming “the manners I was taught growing up” equal a universally correct standard, when customs actually vary by country, region, and the formality of the setting. The disagreement in the thread largely stemmed from differing firsthand accounts of “what I personally saw abroad.”

  • Portugal Tops Group With Four Straight Nations League Wins Without Ronaldo — Xavi’s Netherlands Also Picks Up Second Win

Portugal, playing without Cristiano Ronaldo, have won their first four matches of the UEFA Nations League. In the October 4 clash with Norway, they conceded a stunning goal to defender Ajer in the first half, but Cancelo’s long-range strike leveled the score before Portugal completed a 2-1 comeback win. Meanwhile, the Netherlands — in Xavi’s debut as a national team manager after stints at Barcelona and Bayern — also picked up their second win. Opinions in the thread were split between “the team actually works better without Ronaldo” and “it’s too early to judge since they haven’t faced any strong opponents yet,” and the discussion also branched out into comparisons of Ronaldo’s and Messi’s career records.

    〈UEFA Nations League〉 ◇ October 4 (October 5 Japan time) ◇ League A, Groups 2 & 4, Matchday 4

In Group 4, Portugal (FIFA ranking 5th), playing without Cristiano Ronaldo, came from behind to beat Norway (ranked 19th) 2-1, extending their winning streak to four matches to open the tournament.

In the 36th minute of the first half, Norway’s Ajer scored a jaw-dropping goal from a set piece. But two minutes later, Portugal answered right back when Cancelo, receiving a long throw-in, unleashed a powerful long-range strike.

    Cristiano's thing was explosiveness.
His burst of speed was just insane.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Unlike the World Cup or the European Championship, the UEFA Nations League has a wide gap in strength between competing nations, and so far Portugal’s matches — including this one against Norway — have mostly been against opponents who aren’t quite evenly matched, with clashes against top-tier teams still to come. That’s why the thread was split between the view that “the team is more cohesive without Ronaldo” and the view that “the opposition level has been too low to draw any real conclusions,” with no consensus reached. There were also several replies asking to confirm “wait, is this the Xavi from Barcelona?” — showing that many readers weren’t aware this is his first stint as a national team manager since stepping down from club management. The Ronaldo-vs-Messi comparison, meanwhile, is the kind of topic that resurfaces in nearly every thread like this one, and while the back-and-forth over their respective records continued here too, no new conclusion was reached.

Because “weirdo” can also read as sarcastic taken at face value, reactions split over whether it’s an affectionate nickname or a jab, with one cooler-headed reply asking, “Being happy about this does make you a weirdo, sure, but you know you’re being mocked, right?” Meanwhile, the sheer scale of the reaction — 1.369 million impressions — speaks to just how widely the post was read. Several replies also brought up her younger sister, actress Hirose Suzu, suggesting that the contrast between the two sisters’ public images shaped how the topic spread.

  • Haruka Ayase vanishes into the night on a LUUP scooter — Kaori Mochida: “She just zipped away”

On the October 4 broadcast of TBS’s “Sunday’s Hatsumimigaku,” singer Kaori Mochida revealed that her friend of 20 years, actress Haruka Ayase, rode off into the night on a LUUP electric scooter and “just zipped away.” On 5ch threads, posters expressed surprise that an actress would ride this kind of vehicle at all, along with worries about falls or drunk driving, while other comments pointed out the regional gap — that LUUP is concentrated in urban areas and still hasn’t spread to the countryside. Plenty of comments also praised Ayase’s acting skills.

Doesn't your place not even have LUUP by the station?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

LUUP is an electric-scooter sharing service classified as a “specified small motorized bicycle” under a 2023 legal revision — riders 16 and older don’t need a driver’s license, and helmets are only recommended, not required, which is the backdrop for the thread’s “is it really okay to ride this?” reactions. Service locations are concentrated in major metro areas like Tokyo and Osaka, so the comments noting it’s rarely seen in the countryside aren’t a joke — they reflect the service’s actual rollout. That said, the worries about falls or drunk driving go beyond what the show itself reported and should be read as speculation, not confirmed fact.

  • Yoshinobu Yamamoto to start again the day after tomorrow? Fans spar over why he’s only the ‘No. 3’ starter

As the Dodgers push deeper into the MLB playoffs, a 5ch live-commentary thread lit up over news that Yoshinobu Yamamoto will start again the day after tomorrow. Posters repeatedly questioned the decision to slot him as the “number three” starter — some pointed to a tactical reason (he reportedly performs better on the road than at home), while others just vented frustration at the other starters. Shohei Ohtani’s hitting drew mixed reviews too: he hit a leadoff home run, but also had a moment that helped the opposing team win.

Since the World Series began in 1903, there have only been 15 cases of back-to-back titles. Of those, only 4 teams managed three-peats or more: the Yankees (1936–39 and 1949–53), the Athletics (1972–74), and the Yankees again (1998–2000).

    Re: #95
This gets said about every sport, but why act like "data" is needed for something this obvious?
Of course the team that's already up 1-0 has a higher win rate from that point on — that's just math.

Background and key points of this discussion

The thread’s premise is the starting rotation as the Dodgers advance through the MLB playoffs. As one reply notes, only four franchises since 1903 have won three or more consecutive World Series titles (the Yankees in the 1930s-50s, the Athletics in the 1970s, and the Yankees again around 2000) — a reminder of just how hard the feat the Dodgers are chasing really is. Where the thread splits is over the question of “why is Yamamoto only the number-three starter,” with some questioning his ability and others pointing to a tactical reason: that his stats are better on the road than at home. A point readers can easily misread is that being “number three” in the rotation doesn’t mean a downgrade in ability — it actually reflects both high trust in Yamamoto and deliberate, careful use of him. Despite the inflammatory tone of the thread title, the overall assessment of Yamamoto within the posts themselves is highly positive.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The term “cynic type” (reisho-kei) spread on Japanese social media in the 2020s to describe an attitude of sneering at people who talk about effort or ideals. The CoroCoro Comic panel that sparked this discussion appears to have been drawn with the intent of cautioning against that same cynical attitude. What divided the thread was whether the simplistic framing of “cynicism = bad” was itself fair. While some commenters agreed with the message, others pushed back, arguing that “the problem isn’t cynicism itself, but being irresponsible in situations where you should be a stakeholder”—essentially questioning the loose use of the term. Separately, posts sorting generations from Baby Boomers through Gen Z and Gen Alpha into “hot-blooded,” “cynical,” and “lukewarm” categories are a familiar genre of online generational theorizing, and it’s worth noting they aren’t based on any rigorous survey or academic research.

On a 5ch thread on the “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, users reacted with comments like “Must be nice being able to go outside in your pajamas” and “I thought wide pants had already gone out of style.” Over why sweats-style outfits have become the norm, opinions split between those who called it “just another swing of a pendulum the fashion industry has always had” or “people simply spending less money on clothes,” and younger posters who countered that “deliberately not dressing up IS the new dressing up” — exposing a generational divide in how the look gets read.

This is literally every college student's outfit these days
It's so trendy that basically every college student has turned into this lol
    7AnonymousOct 5, 2026 12:50
Well, if you can go outside in your pajamas, that's pretty convenient, gotta admit
Western countries have been traveling abroad in T-shirts and cargo shorts forever anyway

    Re: #7
In sketchy areas, if people think you're rich you get robbed, you know
    10AnonymousOct 5, 2026 12:50
Didn't wide pants already go out of style though?
    22AnonymousOct 5, 2026 12:52
    Re: #10
Apparently the trend now is a skin-tight T-shirt on top with baggy pants on the bottom

    Re: #1
Heads up — if you say "sweats are lame" you'll get branded an out-of-touch boomer and get swarmed, so watch yourself

Why are these people so aggressive about it
    16AnonymousOct 5, 2026 12:51
    Sweats really are everywhere lately
    35AnonymousOct 5, 2026 12:56
    Re: #16
There have always been people wearing this — like delinquent-type ("yankee") girls who were basically bottom-tier academically (hensachi 30, the lowest ranking bracket)
and older folks who've stopped caring about clothes wear it too
I guess since it's such a familiar sight, people just believed it when told it was "trendy"

    Re: #35
Yeah, my impression was always that it was delinquent types wearing this outside
    Trends really are strange things
    45AnonymousOct 5, 2026 12:58
The top half I can live with, but the bottom half is a bit much — that's literally middle-aged-guy loungewear

    Re: #45
That's just an old man's standards talking
    53AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:00
Apparently this trend started in Korea too
Japanese people can't even come up with their own trends anymore

    Re: #53
Sorry to say, but this look's been around forever
    58AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:00
I'm a sucker for oversized top + skinny bottoms
    61AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:01
    Re: #58
That was like 2016, wasn't it
    60AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:01
The stylish heather-gray sweatpants are actually cut with a flared or baggy-straight silhouette
but fashion-clueless college kids hear "sweatpants are trendy" and just grab the elastic-ankle jogger-style ones sold as loungewear at Uniqlo, and then middle-aged men and women see that and start going on about "poverty" and whatnot

    Re: #60
Funny seeing someone act all high and mighty without even understanding why the design gets tweaked slightly
Uncool people assume something's new just because it's a bit different
The fashion industry has been doing this forever, how do you not know that
You don't even need magazines to know what I'm talking about here
    67AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:03
    Re: #59
Bottom line, it's ended up not stylish and people are spending less on clothes
Young people today seriously don't spend money on clothes
Whatever the reason, the fact that students look more like broke students hasn't changed
    83AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:07
I mean, wide sweatpants were trendy a good while back already
Back then the Uniqlo ones were sold out everywhere
    91AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:11
    Re: #83
And having gone through that, it's become a wardrobe staple… 🫢
    84AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:07
Young people are the ones saying they like it,
so there's no point in us butting in
let alone acting like it says something deep about society
    87AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:08
    Re: #84
    Exactly this
Way too many tone-deaf people out there
Just watch young people's trends with a relaxed eye and leave it at that
    88AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:09
Come on, plenty of you guys didn't care about fashion either and went to college in tracksuits and sweats without a second thought
The times have finally caught up to us
    97AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:12
    Re: #88
These Gen Z kids actually think this loungewear look is stylish, which makes the outfit even more pathetic
    92AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:11
If you make both the top and bottom too polished or too casual it ends up overdone, so you deliberately rough it up by putting sweatpants on just the bottom
    96AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:12
    Re: #92
By that logic, shouldn't the top be a shirt or jacket instead of a T-shirt then
    102AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:13
    Re: #96
Even with a T-shirt it works fine if you throw on a necklace or some accessories
    119AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:20
    Re: #102
Balancing it out with accessories is a given, but honestly I think this strays from dress-casual theory
since both the top and bottom are full-on casual loungewear

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The habit of wearing sweats and oversized T-shirts — essentially loungewear — as actual outdoor clothing is often described as an extension of the “comfort-wear mindset” that spread after the COVID-19 pandemic, and this thread can be read in that same light. Within it, an older-generation view that “they’re just following a trend with no real agency of their own” collided with the younger generation’s own stance that “deliberately not dressing up IS the stylish choice,” and the two sides talked past each other without ever really meeting. Worth noting: the photo in the original post likely doesn’t represent “college students in general” so much as a cherry-picked image of the kind that spreads easily on X. Some in the thread also pointed out that “there’s always been a segment dressed like this, going back to the delinquent/yankee subculture era,” suggesting this isn’t necessarily a brand-new phenomenon so much as a longstanding group of people who don’t spend money on clothes. A theory that the trend originated in Korea was also floated, but with no evidence offered, so it shouldn’t be taken as settled.
