  • CoroCoro Comic’s Manga Depicting the ‘Future of a Cynic’ Sparks Debate on 5ch

CoroCoro Comic, a manga magazine for children, became a hot topic on 5ch after running a panel suggesting that people who “sneer” cynically at things end up a certain way later in life. In the thread, some commenters agreed with the rebuke of a cynical attitude that mocks earnest effort, while others countered that “the problem isn’t cynicism itself, but being irresponsible in situations where you should be a stakeholder.” The discussion spiraled from criticism of so-called “cynic types” into a full generational debate spanning the Baby Boomers, the Lost Generation, and Gen Z.

More than whether it's 'cynicism' or not,
I think having a personality that gets a kick out of lording it over others is just bad.
    – Don't rush to rank people as better or worse by a single yardstick
    – Be kind to strangers you don't even know
Let's all try to keep that in mind.
I'm working on it myself every day too.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The term “cynic type” (reisho-kei) spread on Japanese social media in the 2020s to describe an attitude of sneering at people who talk about effort or ideals. The CoroCoro Comic panel that sparked this discussion appears to have been drawn with the intent of cautioning against that same cynical attitude. What divided the thread was whether the simplistic framing of “cynicism = bad” was itself fair. While some commenters agreed with the message, others pushed back, arguing that “the problem isn’t cynicism itself, but being irresponsible in situations where you should be a stakeholder”—essentially questioning the loose use of the term. Separately, posts sorting generations from Baby Boomers through Gen Z and Gen Alpha into “hot-blooded,” “cynical,” and “lukewarm” categories are a familiar genre of online generational theorizing, and it’s worth noting they aren’t based on any rigorous survey or academic research.

  • College Students’ Fashion Trend Splits Opinion — 5ch: ‘Not Trying Is the New Trying’

A photo posted on X (formerly Twitter) captioned “This is literally every college student’s outfit these days,” showing an oversized T-shirt paired with wide sweatpants, went viral and racked up over 10,000 likes. On a 5ch thread on the “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, users reacted with comments like “Must be nice being able to go outside in your pajamas” and “I thought wide pants had already gone out of style.” Over why sweats-style outfits have become the norm, opinions split between those who called it “just another swing of a pendulum the fashion industry has always had” or “people simply spending less money on clothes,” and younger posters who countered that “deliberately not dressing up IS the new dressing up” — exposing a generational divide in how the look gets read.

These Gen Z kids actually think this loungewear look is stylish, which makes the outfit even more pathetic
    92AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:11
If you make both the top and bottom too polished or too casual it ends up overdone, so you deliberately rough it up by putting sweatpants on just the bottom
    96AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:12
    Re: #92
By that logic, shouldn't the top be a shirt or jacket instead of a T-shirt then
    102AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:13
    Re: #96
Even with a T-shirt it works fine if you throw on a necklace or some accessories
    119AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:20
    Re: #102
Balancing it out with accessories is a given, but honestly I think this strays from dress-casual theory
since both the top and bottom are full-on casual loungewear

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The habit of wearing sweats and oversized T-shirts — essentially loungewear — as actual outdoor clothing is often described as an extension of the “comfort-wear mindset” that spread after the COVID-19 pandemic, and this thread can be read in that same light. Within it, an older-generation view that “they’re just following a trend with no real agency of their own” collided with the younger generation’s own stance that “deliberately not dressing up IS the stylish choice,” and the two sides talked past each other without ever really meeting. Worth noting: the photo in the original post likely doesn’t represent “college students in general” so much as a cherry-picked image of the kind that spreads easily on X. Some in the thread also pointed out that “there’s always been a segment dressed like this, going back to the delinquent/yankee subculture era,” suggesting this isn’t necessarily a brand-new phenomenon so much as a longstanding group of people who don’t spend money on clothes. A theory that the trend originated in Korea was also floated, but with no evidence offered, so it shouldn’t be taken as settled.

  • Natsuyaki Miyabi Still Has Unfinished Business With Singing — Thread Spirals Into Hello! Project Vocal-Skill Debate

Former Berryz Kobo and Buono! member Natsuyaki Miyabi posted a video of herself singing a Hello! Project song, and it set off a lively thread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. Alongside comments praising Natsuyaki’s vocal ability itself, posters kept comparing her singing style to that of fellow Buono! member Dambara Ruru, as well as Tanaka Reina and Suzuki Airi. Supportive takes (“Miyabi could just be the guide vocalist at this point”) appeared right alongside harsher ones about her popularity (“she’s not the type who can make it outside the ‘village’”), and the thread widened into a debate about how singing ability and commercial success don’t always go hand in hand.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Natsuyaki Miyabi is a former member of Berryz Kobo and Buono!, and this thread started after she posted a video of herself singing a Hello! Project song. The “guide vocal” (仮歌) mentioned in the replies refers to a temporary vocal take recorded before the official version, and the question of who handles guide vocals is the kind of topic only fans familiar with Hello! Project’s behind-the-scenes workings would raise. The thread also brings up how fellow Buono! member Nihei recently drew attention online over an unrelated matter, reflecting shifting name recognition within the group. Opinions in the thread are split — some say she “has the vocal skill but lacks individuality” or “wouldn’t sell outside the ‘village’” — reflecting a debate common in the entertainment and idol world: that vocal talent and commercial success don’t always go together.

  • Why the Wii Was a Huge Hit But Had a Short Lifespan: 5ch Says “Even With 100 Million Consoles Sold, Software Was Only Half of PS3’s”

The Wii launched in 2006 and ended production in 2013. While cumulative hardware sales topped 100 million units, a thread points out that the number of packaged software titles stayed at roughly half of the PS3’s total. On the 5ch Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, a thread debated why such a massive hit switched to its successor, the Wii U, after such a short run. Opinions were split between those who see it as a short-lived fad that third parties never fully bought into, and those who argue the Wii was never designed to be a long-running platform in the first place.

    1AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:02
・It was ultimately a one-hit wonder, riding on titles like Wii Sports
・Completely overhauling a game interface people had loved for years wasn't a good move
・During the shift to HD, the player base got split between it and PS3/Xbox
    2AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:04
The boom was just a fad for casual, mainstream audiences — only Nintendo's own games actually sold.
    Third parties had zero motivation.
Sony brought out Move, so the direction shifted.
Sony was only ever chasing Wii's leftovers anyway, so they weren't motivated either.
    That's basically it.
    3AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:10
It was a complete one-hit wonder, plain and simple.
If it actually had something great going for it, those elements would've carried over to later hardware.

VR controllers are basically an evolved form of the Wii remote, right?
    5AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:17
Wii: launched 2006, production ended 2013.

Dragon Quest X kept supporting it through the end of Version 3 even after hardware production ended (support was finally cut with Version 4 in November 2017).
That seems plenty long to me.
    52AnonymousOct 5, 2026 09:38
    Re: #5
It was completely dead in its later years though.
    6AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:18
It can only be because it was just a gimmick for kids.

Making the game react properly to how you swing the remote requires sophisticated physics calculations, but the Wii didn't have the power for that.
Swapping buttons for stick-waving just made things more tedious.

Given its limited power, the only physics simulations it could pull off were simple mini-games like bowling.
In other words, it was hardware that peaked at Wii Sports.
I thought it was just a showcase for what was coming, but there was no further development beyond that.

It's not bad, but honestly I'd rather just play with a normal controller.
    9AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:26
Because they never intended for it to live long.

They pushed the Wii U out even though it was clearly unprepared.
They could've held off that year and kept milking the Wii a while longer instead.
I think the intent was to get ahead of the PS4, though.
    10AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:27
That said, the Wii was the one that started letting you download and play old retro games.
Even so, the Wii Remote's pointer accuracy was way too low, making it hard to control the way you wanted.
(They clearly knew that — that's why they later released the Wii Remote Plus with built-in MotionPlus.)
    12AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:46
The Wii's hardware topped 100 million units, but it only put out about half as many packaged software titles as the PS3.

People say it had more million-sellers than the PS2,
but in reality sales were abnormally concentrated in about 30 specific titles and the usual handful of 4 or so publishers that always do well on Nintendo hardware —
everything else barely sold at all.

By its third year on the market, pretty much all the buzz was about the Virtual Console.

    Core gamers disappeared almost overnight.
    18AnonymousOct 5, 2026 08:03

Those core gamers are basically an endangered species now anyway, and they barely buy software, so the Wii's direction was the right call.

Capcom's Street Fighter IV went to PS3 and 3DS, while the Wii got Tatsunoko vs. Capcom instead — but Tatsunoko vs. Capcom (a Capcom/Tatsunoko-characters crossover fighter) was actually pretty fun.

The painful part is that the DS ended up taking that exact position away from it.

The Wii's whole philosophy was: there's already a main console sitting front and center elsewhere, and it's fine if the Wii just quietly gets a spot off in the corner.
It gave up from the start on being some do-everything, all-in-one machine.

Now that Switch/Switch 2 have become the main console,
it's simply become capable of doing everything as a result.

Wii U, Switch, and Switch 2 all carry it forward, come on…

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Wii had a run of roughly seven years, from its 2006 launch to the end of production in 2013 — not extremely short compared to contemporaries like the PS3 and Xbox 360. What the thread calls “short-lived” isn’t about poor sales; it refers to the fact that, despite how widespread the hardware became, third-party software support stayed thin, and the transition to its successor, the Wii U, happened abruptly. Cumulative hardware sales topped 100 million units, making it one of the best-selling home consoles in Nintendo’s history, but according to the figures cited in the thread, the number of packaged software titles was only about half that of the PS3. The biggest point of contention is this twist of “it sold, but it didn’t last” — opinions were also split on whether the Wii’s control scheme and low-performance approach carried through to the Switch, or whether that lineage was cut off once by the Wii U’s struggles.

  • Free Gemini loses the Flash model on October 9 — only Flash-Lite left

On October 3, a post spread across X with the line “Google Gemini is ending.” What’s actually ending isn’t Gemini itself — it’s free users’ (those not on a paid plan) access to the “Flash” model. From October 9 onward, only the lightweight “Flash-Lite” will be available to them. On the 5ch thread, discussion moved past the change itself and into a broader comparison debate — “Is Gemini actually any good next to ChatGPT (nicknamed “Chappy”) and Claude?” — with some posters pointing to frequent hallucinations, while others said it’s plenty good for image generation or quick searches.

    “Google Gemini is ending.”

On October 3, a post spread on X with exactly that line. What’s actually disappearing isn’t Gemini itself. What’s going away is free users’ (non-paying-plan) access to the “Flash” model.

Background and key points of this discussion

Gemini comes in three tiers — Pro, Flash, and Flash-Lite — and Flash was the relatively capable mid-tier model that had been available for free. What’s actually changing is the scope of the free plan, not the end of Gemini itself, a distinction that’s easy to get wrong. Where the thread split was over how accurate Gemini’s answers really are: many pointed to misinformation (hallucinations) stemming from stale training data, while others felt it’s good enough for image generation or quick lookups. The conversation also grew into a wider “which AI is best to use for free” debate, with several services — ChatGPT, Claude, Qwen, and others — getting name-checked, reflecting a surge of interest in alternatives sparked by this cut to Gemini’s free tier. This kind of narrowing of free access isn’t unique to Gemini — it’s one example of a broader industry trend toward prioritizing profitability over free offerings.

Even the media's hyping it up as a title match

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Kirin Cup has traditionally been held mostly as a one-off friendly, so it’s unusual for this edition to feature a tournament bracket with an actual ‘final.’ This tournament also included matches against South American powerhouses, which is likely why the thread’s reaction of ‘wait, the final opponent is NZ?’ reflects confusion over how the bracket actually came together rather than any error. Commentator Yoichiro Kakitani is remembered for his trickster style of play during his career, but as the TBS commentary quoted in the thread shows, he’s praised for logical, articulate analysis — suggesting his broadcasting role rests on a different skill set than the flashiness of his playing days. It’s also worth noting, something the original article alone doesn’t convey, that inviting celebrity ‘guests’ onto terrestrial sports broadcasts has become a fairly standard practice in recent years, not something unique to this match. The fact that the third-place match is streaming YouTube-only appears to be a scheduling call made under limited terrestrial airtime.

  • Hama Sushi Soy-Sauce-Dumping Man Gets 1-Year Prison Term — The Backstory Behind His Viral Scandal, As Told in Court

Defendant Yuta Niinishi (43), who went viral for dumping a huge amount of soy sauce out at a Hama Sushi conveyor-belt sushi restaurant, has been sentenced to one year of imprisonment. According to reports, this was the second time he had done it, and before the verdict his wife said she had only been sleeping “two or three hours a night.” Commenters on the thread pointed out that he committed the same act again at the same restaurant just five days after being released, which they believe is what led to the actual prison sentence this time. Some criticized Hama Sushi’s initially lax response, others debated whether the sentence was too light or too harsh, and some questioned whether his remorse was genuine.

    Re: #196
    What's with this guy?
Is he hearing or seeing radio waves or something? (slang implying he's delusional/not all there)

Background and Key Points of Debate

The “imprisonment” (kokin-kei) sentence used in this ruling is a newly created penalty introduced by the June 2025 revision of Japan’s Penal Code, which abolished the old distinction between “penal labor” (chōeki) and “imprisonment without labor” (kinko); it’s equivalent to what used to be a one-year chōeki sentence. Because the term is unfamiliar, it can be hard to judge how serious the sentence actually is, but it remains real prison time all the same. What split opinion on the thread was how to judge Hama Sushi’s handling of the case. Some argued that letting him off with a fine the first time is exactly what enabled the second offense, while others pushed back that it’s unfair to place all the blame on the store. On the sentence itself, some felt it was too light given that this was a repeat offense, while others felt that actual prison time for a “nuisance video” stunt is already a harsh punishment in its own right — no consensus emerged either way. The wife’s comments mentioned in the news report barely came up in the thread at all. This case is part of a wider pattern of similar nuisance acts at conveyor-belt sushi chains like Hama Sushi, with companies increasingly reporting offenders to police and pushing for tougher penalties.

  • PS6’s CPU Reportedly Upgrading to Zen 6, Up to 120% Higher IPC Than PS5

The next-gen “PS6” console is expected to launch sometime between late 2027 and 2028, and new reports claim its CPU will move from the PS5’s AMD Zen 2 to the Zen 6 generation, boosting IPC (instructions processed per clock cycle) by up to 120%. The chip is said to be a semi-custom “Orion” design co-developed by AMD and Sony, built on TSMC’s 3nm process. On 5ch’s console-war board, users weighed in with skepticism — noting that the actual generation-to-generation IPC gains for Zen (about 19% for Zen 3, 13% for Zen 4, 16% for Zen 5) make it hard to see how four generations add up to 120% — alongside worries that the price will skyrocket.

New performance estimates have surfaced regarding the CPU in the next-generation “PS6” console, which is rumored to launch sometime between late 2027 and 2028. The PS6 is said to move from the AMD Zen 2 architecture used in the PS5 to the Zen 6 generation, which could bring a major boost to IPC (instructions executed per clock cycle). Current predictions suggest that CPU performance far exceeding the PS5’s could help maintain high frame rates even in games with complex physics simulations and large numbers of NPCs.

The PS6’s CPU is reportedly built around “Orion,” a semi-custom chip co-developed by AMD and Sony, combining TSMC’s 3nm process with the Zen 6 architecture.

    36AnonymousOct 5, 2026 08:16
The Japanese PS5 being 50,000 yen before tax is going to make it hard to judge the price this time.

I think a lot of people assume "surely it won't go above 100,000 yen," but even the much less powerful Steam Machine was 200,000 yen.
    37AnonymousOct 5, 2026 08:19
    Re: #36
That's just a special bargain price for Japan. With the PS6, poor old Japan is probably getting cut loose.
    40AnonymousOct 5, 2026 08:34
I think the reason the PS5 Pro can't ship [in enough volume] is that they're taking a loss even at today's high price.
The 2TB SSD and the 4nm chip make it expensive.

Since the Steam Machine is 200,000 yen, they'd probably want something like 170,000 yen.
The PS5's 6nm process is still relatively cheap.

Which means the PS6's 3nm chip will be even more expensive.
Maybe close to 300,000 yen just in production cost?
    And that's a conservative estimate.

Say they sell it for 200,000 yen anyway —
to claw back a 100,000 yen loss through software royalties, you'd need to sell 300,000 yen worth of games just to net 90,000 yen.
In reality, they probably wouldn't even see that much in sales.
    44AnonymousOct 5, 2026 08:43
    Re: #40
Storage is the weak point for pricing, so that's what they'll cut — 1TB at most, maybe even down to 500GB if it's bad.
If it crosses the $1,000 line, even the US market won't let that slide.
So they'll aim to keep it under $1,000, which means in Japan it'll probably come in under 200,000 yen.
    94AnonymousOct 5, 2026 11:19

    43AnonymousOct 5, 2026 08:42
    Re: #41
We're talking about IPC here, right? Once you factor in the clock speed jump from shrinking 7nm down to 2nm, 120% doesn't even come close to the real gain.
    47AnonymousOct 5, 2026 08:51
    Re: #41
IPC has stayed basically flat from the iPhone 12 to the iPhone 18, though.
A 120% IPC improvement is way too much of a stretch.
If they meant IPC improves 20% — reaching 120% of the original value — that might be realistic, though.
    49AnonymousOct 5, 2026 08:57
    Re: #47
    Agreed.
I think the correct reading isn't "a 120% improvement," but rather "a 20% improvement, bringing it to 120% [of the original]."

But even so, that's rough. The 8-core/16-thread setup is staying the same as the PS5, so compared to past PlayStation generations, the jump is way too small.

If you stack that all the way from Zen 2 to Zen 6, yeah, 120% starts to sound believable.
    54AnonymousOct 5, 2026 09:01
    Re: #49
The PS6 reportedly packs two Zen 6 LP cores dedicated to handling the OS and background tasks, so unlike the PS5 — where 1-2 cores get tied up running the OS — there's no more interrupt lag eating into performance. That alone should be a big jump in real-world performance.
All 8 cores/16 threads become fully available for the game itself.

Zen 2 was an older architecture with IPC roughly on par with Skylake.
Zen 3 is where it caught up to Intel.
Everything since then has only seen margin-of-error-level gains.
If anything, AMD stopped chasing raw IPC and leaned hard into a server-optimized architecture instead — which is why their server market share keeps growing.

Sony got sued on the grounds that if the PS2 and PS3 were going to use open-source Linux, then the PS3's own OS should also be made fully open-source and free. That's why they switched to a custom BSD and dropped Linux.
And that's exactly why it became impossible to use a PlayStation as a PC.

The Xbox's CPU and GPU were a newer generation and looked like they might win on raw performance, so Sony scrambled and cranked the PS5's clock speed way up to compensate. That's the whole reason it's being pushed so hard.

    72AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:22
    Re: #70
Even AMD's own marketing figure is already the "up to" maximum.
If the max per generation is only around a 10% improvement, four generations won't add up to a 120% improvement.
Measured in actual games, even a 50% improvement would be questionable.
For gaming especially, minor architectural tweaks don't move IPC much anymore — it's gotten to the point where you need brute-force moves like slapping on 3D cache to get real gains.
    76AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:30
    Re: #72

My guess is they'll scale back performance from the original plan and cut storage too. As long as they beef up the AI features, they can paper over the rest.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “IPC” at the center of the PS6 CPU buzz is a measure separate from clock speed — it indicates how many instructions can be processed per clock cycle, and serves as a yardstick for real generational performance gains. Looking at AMD’s past Zen architectures, the published improvements were roughly 19% from Zen 2 to Zen 3, 13% for Zen 4, and 16% for Zen 5 — numbers that don’t easily stack up to 120% even when added together. That suggests the “up to 120%” figure is likely a maximum value for specific workloads, and actual in-game performance isn’t simply going to more than double. Alongside debate over how to interpret the number, the thread also showed real concern that the switch to TSMC’s 3nm process and larger storage capacities will drive up costs, pushing the console’s retail price well above the current PS5. IPC gains and retail pricing are technically separate issues, but in the thread they ended up tangled together.

  • Fans Clash Over Mystery ‘Hai-se-no!’ Call at Rosy Chronicle Shows

At live shows for the Hello! Project group Rosy Chronicle, a male fan has reportedly been spotted shouting a unique call of his own — “Hai-se-no!” — in place of the usual standard calls. According to a report on 5ch’s Hello! Project board, other fans nearby directly confronted him, telling him to “never say that again,” and a thread was started about it. The discussion went beyond whether his behavior was right or wrong, growing into a bigger debate about just how far fan-cheering traditions like MIX chants and calls should continue at shows today.

That 'Hai-se-no' yokai that started showing up at Shiodome yesterday (?) was back again today.
For some reason he skipped it during "Naji Ai" (a song nickname) and busted it out during some other song instead…
    3AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:17
The only song where 'se-no' gets a pass is Lalapipi.

People who shout 'hai-se-no' are just nuisance otaku, plain and simple.
    9AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:19
If you told the guys doing the 'oi-oi' call "You're loud! It's grating!" would they actually stop?
If not, you've got no right to lecture anyone else.

When there's a window to do MIX I get the urge to join in, but I hold back.
    14AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:28
They should just set official calls and ban everything else.
It's not like the old days when creative cheering culture used to spring up on its own.
    16AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:29
Plenty of newcomers dislike calls altogether anyway.
Stuff like 'oi-oi,' 'fu-fu,' or just shouting names is plenty.
    17AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:29
Maybe it's time to drop the fantasy that you're somehow special and just admit you're otaku for an underground idol group that shows up at underground idol festivals too. Of course MIX and 'hai-se-no' are going to happen at this point.
    23AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:39
The real problem with this 'hai-se-no' thing is
it's seriously just one guy saying it.
    24AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:40
I'm curious which song he actually said 'hai-se-no' during.
    25AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:43
    Rena-chan's cute, super cute ×5!
Go Rena-chan, nail that quiet breakdown chorus!!
    27AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:46
Groups should never have their own complicated, group-specific calls.
And it's even worse when the idols themselves start lecturing fans with "here's how you say it here."
'Hai-se-no' and MIX are the best kind of culture precisely because even first-timers can join in and everyone feels united.
'8bit' is basically a song written for 'hai-se-no' and MIX.
I don't know what song they played at Shiodome, but I feel bad for Grandpa Hai-se-no.
    28AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:48
Hardly anyone in Hello! Project even does that anymore, and you're calling it unity…?

I want Rosy's shows to be clean — no 'hai-se-no,' no 'ore no,' no 'chou zekkou kawaii' nonsense.
It's exactly because this is such an important stage in their career that I want to keep it clean and treat it with care.
    Isn't that how everyone feels?
Or does everyone actually welcome it turning into an underground-idol-style scene?
    56AnonymousOct 5, 2026 11:06
    Re: #54
They don't even give us the kind of fan interaction underground idols do, so no, I don't welcome it.

    59AnonymousOct 5, 2026 11:07

I always figured they were just a bunch of DDs (fans who like lots of idols rather than being loyal to one).

The most militant fanbase in all of Hello! Project.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

MIX chants and calls are a fan-cheering tradition that took root at idol shows well beyond Hello! Project, developing over time as rhythmic accompaniment to songs. In recent years, however, there’s been a growing push to keep shows welcoming to first-time attendees, and that has made many fans less tolerant of calls and MIX chants with a strong, group-specific flavor. What made this case stand out is that ‘hai-se-no’ isn’t an official call or a widely established chant — it was reportedly being repeated by just one specific person. In the thread, opinions clashed head-on between those who feel calling culture itself should be protected and those who see it as a nuisance that alienates first-time fans, with no resolution in sight. It’s also worth noting that details like exactly which songs the call was used during were never confirmed within the thread — this whole debate stems from a single on-site sighting.

  • Served Someone Else’s Canceled Ramen — 5ch Says It’s Just Like a ‘Nearly-New’ Used Car

The post on 5ch described an incident at a ramen shop. Right after the poster placed an order, another customer’s ramen was finished and brought to their table — but that customer suddenly had something urgent come up, canceled on the spot, and left. The shop then served that very bowl to the poster instead, leaving them feeling “unsettled” about it. The thread split into two camps: the practical types who argued “there’s nothing wrong with the food itself, so just eat it,” and those who felt psychologically uneasy, saying “I don’t want something that was made for someone else.” The debate escalated into comparisons with “nearly-new used cars” and “previously booked hotel rooms.”

    1AnonymousOct 5, 2026 09:55
    I ordered a ramen.
Then another customer's ramen order was finished and carried over to their table.
But that customer suddenly had something urgent come up, canceled the ramen, and left the shop.
    2AnonymousOct 5, 2026 09:56
Going to a ramen shop in the first place — that rock-bottom dump — was your mistake right there.
    3AnonymousOct 5, 2026 09:56

    11AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:03
    Re: #1
You're the type who wouldn't stay in a hotel room that opened up because someone else canceled either, right?
Used room, used bed — same thing.
    19AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:06
    Re: #11
    Exactly.
It has to be a brand-new room with a brand-new bed.
    25AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:09
Re: #11 That analogy doesn't hold up.
In this case, the issue isn't that your own order is wrong — it's that someone else's order got handed to you instead.
A canceled hotel room isn't "a room someone else ordered" being handed off — that's just a vacant room, plain and simple.
    12AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:03
If it's before they've served it to that other customer, I'd eat it without a second thought.
    No problem at all.
    14AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:03
Just demand your money back, walk out, and never go back.
Why would you even want to keep dealing with that place?
    15AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:04
If it's a ramen under 700 yen, I'd just quietly eat it.
If it's over 1000 yen, I'd either refuse it or walk out.
    22AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:07
If the item hasn't actually been delivered yet, the deal isn't finalized — just say you want to add a topping.
    24AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:09
Back in the bubble-economy boom days, weren't there shops that wouldn't even start cooking until they had orders for 4 people?

They eat ramen out of used bowls too.

Re: #33 The previous customer paid for it and then canceled.
    34AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:13
Why not just have them remake it?
They'll probably think "is this guy an idiot?" but—

    The end.
    36AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:13
There are surprisingly a lot of people who say they don't want secondhand chopsticks.
They seem to ask for disposable ones or bring their own chopsticks.

    But
nobody brings their own ramen bowl.
Everyone eats out of a used bowl.
    37AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:15
The unease in this case isn't about secondhand bowls.
There's no such thing as a customer demanding to be served in a brand-new bowl in the first place.
    38AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:15
    Re: #35
Then that ramen isn't yours, so you should be able to demand they remake it.
    41AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:17
Re: #38 Ramen shops don't accept cancellations like that because it's the same product with no quality problem.
    39AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:16
So it's not the kind of shop that does delicate little touches like "that guy looks like he's got high blood pressure, let me quietly cut back on his salt."

I'm a regular at a shop where you line up before opening.
Even if I'm like 10th in line, they whip my order out fast.
Other customers sometimes look annoyed about it,
but that's not a problem, right?
    43AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:18
    Re: #40
A shop like that deserves to go under.
    44AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:19
I get a little hesitant when the cutlery is all piled together in one spot.
If spoons, knives, and forks are laid out on their sides, other customers might've been pawing all over them,
and if I peek into the bottom of the chopstick holder I might lose my appetite entirely.
    45AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:19
    Well, I get it, somewhat.
If you focus only on the item you were actually served, there doesn't seem to be a real problem.

On the other hand, I also get the feeling of "why am I suddenly stuck with a liability the shop should've eaten" or "don't get lazy on me over a few hundred yen."

Right now I feel the same unease as the original poster, but if I were back in college I probably would've just accepted it without a second thought.
I was broke back then — after a drinking party, once the group at the next table left, we'd all dig into their leftovers.
    50AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:27
I went out for lunch with my girlfriend earlier.

Me: "I'll get ramen, what about you?"
    Her: "I'll get ramen too."
Staff: "What can I get you?"
    Me: "Two ramens."
    Her: "Same for me."

    Four bowls came out.

    Re: #50
So since you both wanted the same thing, one bowl of ramen was the correct order?
    63AnonymousOct 5, 2026 11:14
    Re: #50
Totally made-up story ("uso-matsu" — 5ch slang for an obviously fabricated anecdote).
The staff would repeat the order back to confirm it, come on.
    58AnonymousOct 5, 2026 10:56
If it's set down right in front of the customer who canceled it, that'd feel bad.
It's basically a "nearly-new" used car, in car terms.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

This kind of “I was served a canceled order” anecdote touches on an area of restaurant etiquette that isn’t formally spelled out anywhere. Hygienically there’s no issue, since the food was never touched — but what split the thread was something more psychological: the “value” of the item as a product versus whether it was made specifically for you. Some pointed out that perception shifts with price, saying their reaction would differ between a roughly 700-yen item and one over 1000 yen. There were also counterarguments that comparisons like “nearly-new used cars” or “previously booked hotel rooms” miss the real point — in practice, this comes down less to a hygiene issue and more to differences in individual sensibility and personality.
