  • Sukiya and Hama-zushi Adopt ‘Smart Code’ Payments — 5ch: ‘Just Consolidate Already, There Are Too Many’

On October 1, Zensho Holdings began accepting the “Smart Code” common QR/barcode payment standard at roughly 5,290 of its domestic restaurants (as of the end of August 2026), including Sukiya and Hama-zushi. While this opens the door for payment methods like FamiPay and ANA Pay, it also turns out that six “Pay” services that used the same underlying system — including Hama Pay and Yucho Pay — will be discontinued on December 20, 2026. On 5ch, commenters piled on about the odd order of the announcements and the sheer, ever-growing number of “XX Pay” services.

Meanwhile, IC (contactless card) payments show zero sign of growing… though I guess nobody's pulling out of that either, so no real harm done.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

At the root of this is the end of the “Bank Pay” infrastructure provided by GMO Payment Gateway. Six services, including Hama Pay and Yucho Pay, ran on this infrastructure, and following GMO’s decision to shut it down, all of them will stop working on the same date, December 20, 2026. Smart Code itself is a common QR/barcode payment standard pushed by JCB, and it has now been introduced at Zensho-affiliated stores as well. Thread opinions diverged over the odd order in which the new standard’s launch and the existing services’ shutdowns were announced, and over the fact that QR payment services keep springing up one after another while NFC (contactless tap) payments show little sign of spreading. Some also pointed out that transit IC cards are awkward for people who don’t use public transportation, and no consensus emerged on which payment method is the real front-runner.

  • Mosquito-Hunting Laser Gun Opens for Pre-Order — 5ch Reacts: ‘I’m Scared It’ll Shoot Me in the Eye’

“Photon Matrix,” a mosquito-detecting, auto-firing laser device developed by a Chinese manufacturer, has raised over $2.5 million on an overseas crowdfunding platform and has now opened pre-orders. It’s billed as being able to take down mosquitoes faster than a swat of the hand, but on 5ch’s Science News+ thread, commenters repeatedly raised concerns about the risk of the laser hitting someone in the eye. Some hoped it could be applied to pest control on farmland or in cattle barns, while others offered the cooler take that existing insecticides or mosquito coils already do the job just fine — with skepticism about its real-world usefulness standing out overall.

Pre-orders open for laser-beam mosquito zapper

Pre-orders have begun for “Photon Matrix,” a device that scans for mosquitoes and fires a beam at them faster than you could swat one by hand.

This thing is supposed to have a set effective range, plus a safety setting that won't fire if a person's in the way.
So if you put it on the floor, any mosquito outside that hemisphere-shaped effective range is untouched, and once a person walks into the room, they'll have to swat it themselves or get bitten.

    40AnonymousOct 5, 2026 03:31
Wouldn't a one-push can of bug spray just do the job?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Devices that detect and shoot insects with a laser have become an increasingly common category of Chinese-made crowdfunded products in recent years, and Photon Matrix is one example, having raised over $2.5 million on an overseas backing platform. Opinion on the thread split mainly over safety, with worries about the beam accidentally hitting someone’s eye pitted against voices confident in its precision and looking forward to the product. In Japan, laser pointer output is subject to regulation, and using similar equipment at home could raise compliance questions — though whether this particular product meets Japanese domestic standards was never confirmed within the thread and remains unclear. Some reports put the price at around 200,000 yen, and whether that’s worth it compared to existing electric mosquito repellents or insecticides was another point where opinions diverged.

  • Video of Fan Dumping Beer Right in Front of Yokohama Stadium’s Beer Vendor Girl Sparks Debate

A video showing a fan at Yokohama Stadium (“Hama-Stan”) dumping out beer he’d just bought from a beer vendor girl, right on the spot, became a hot topic on the 5ch “Live Game Threads” (Nandemo Jikkyo G) board. Multiple posters noted that some customers buy cup after cup just to keep chatting with the vendor. Some argued it would be simpler to just hand her cash as a tip directly, while others countered that this is a “gray area” since a vendor accepting cash tips from customers could get her fired. The thread also touched on how thin commission cuts and the shift to cashless payments affect vendors’ income, with opinions split on whether dumping the beer is really an appropriate way to show appreciation.

Writing this out, it occurs to me that vendors and concession stands wrapping up relatively early isn't just about closing prep —
it might also be a way to get them out early and protect them from guys like this.
Today's extra-innings game at Hama-Stan, for instance — if they'd kept selling until the very end, sales would've been pretty huge.

    Background and Points of Debate

Draft-beer vendors at ballparks are a popular part-time job, but their commission is said to be only around 10-20% of sales, and back when cash payments dominated, time spent interacting with customers translated directly into earnings. The thread’s suggestion that “you could just hand over a tip directly” was met with the counterargument that “accepting cash could get her fired” — likely reflecting the common practice of teams and operating companies prohibiting vendors from directly receiving money from customers. That said, the video’s filming date, who posted it, and the buyer’s actual intent were never confirmed within the thread itself, so it’s worth keeping in mind that most of the opinions, pro or con, are speculation based on each poster’s own game-watching experience.

  • Why Does ‘Hanchou’ Keep Going Past Volume 23? 5ch Digs Into Why Squad Leader Otsuka Is So Popular

The latest volume 23 of “One-Day Outing Pass: Hanchou,” a spinoff of “Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor,” cracked the top 100 on Amazon Japan’s book sales ranking on September 29, landing at #95. In the original “Kaiji” manga, Squad Leader Otsuka was only prominent through roughly the early part of volume 5, yet the spinoff has already run far longer than his appearances in the main series. On 5ch’s Geinou/Sports News+ board, users debated why a series that’s “basically just about going out to eat” has stayed so popular, with some praising its knack for weaving in topical references and the dynamics between the “black suits” (debt collectors/overseers) and underground laborers, while others argued over the complete absence of any adult-entertainment (“fuuzoku”) storylines.

    Real Sound Book, 2026.10.04 07:55

Ranked #95 in the “Books” category of Amazon Japan’s bestseller list on September 29 was “One-Day Outing Pass: Hanchou (Vol. 23)” (Young Magazine KC Special). It’s the latest volume of the spinoff comic starring Squad Leader Otsuka, a character from Nobuyuki Fukumoto’s “Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor” (Young Magazine Comics).

Hard to believe, but “Hanchou” is already up to volume 23. In the main “Kaiji” story, Squad Leader Otsuka’s heyday only ran through roughly the first half of volume 5 of “Ultimate Survivor.” Going purely by page count, this long-running series has, for Otsuka individually, completely eclipsed his role in the original — and there’s still no sign of it wrapping up. Otsuka really is something else.

Otsuka in Hanchou uses that expensive one-day outing pass — the one Kaiji desperately fought to get — all the time. Most of his outings aren't even for getting supplies, just for relaxing. Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“One-Day Outing Pass: Hanchou” is a spinoff centered on Squad Leader Otsuka of the Teiai Group, a character from Nobuyuki Fukumoto’s “Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor.” It carries over the series’ “pelika” debt-currency system and forced underground labor setting while depicting Otsuka’s daily life using his one-day outing pass to go eat around town. Opinion in the thread was split over the “Ichijou” spinoff, another Fukumoto-derived series — some called it boring, while others praised the relationship with the annoying Kansai guy from his part-time job. There was also debate about the near-total absence of sexual content across the Kaiji franchise, with some speculating — based on comments on the MangaPoke app — that the readership skews heavily female, making the creators reluctant to change direction. One easy point of confusion: the claim that Hanchou has “eclipsed the main Kaiji series” refers not to total volume counts across both series, but specifically to how long Otsuka appeared in the main story versus the spinoff.

  • Beat Takeshi Sounds the Alarm on AI Surveillance Society: “Only a Tiny Few Will Survive, the Rest Treated Like Slaves”

On the October 4 broadcast of TV Asahi’s “Beat Takeshi’s TV Tackle,” Beat Takeshi voiced concern about where an AI-driven surveillance society could ultimately lead, saying “Only a tiny fraction of people will survive, and basically everyone else will end up treated like slaves…” The show was a discussion segment covering fake advertising and illegal poaching alongside AI surveillance, but it was the AI segment that drew the most attention online. On 5ch, reactions ranged from jaded comments like “We’re basically slaves already” to others hailing AI as “the next-generation god,” and the discussion eventually spiraled into a debate over just how well AI can understand human emotion.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Beat Takeshi’s remark was a future prediction linking an AI-driven surveillance society with widening inequality, but the same broadcast also covered separate topics like fake advertising and illegal poaching, so this comment was just one part of a broader discussion segment. The split on 5ch came down to differing stances on whether to view AI as a threat or a benefit, ranging from the view that life is “already slave-like” to the optimistic take that if AI spreads, inequality might actually shrink. On the question of whether AI can understand human emotion, skepticism that an emotionless AI is “just good at faking it” stood alongside the counterargument that even mutual understanding between humans never goes beyond guesswork anyway — what stood out wasn’t the technical accuracy of AI, but differing values on how to approach it. Worth keeping in mind: Takeshi’s remark was just one comment within the show, not something backed by a concrete policy proposal or evidence.

The search for a successor to Chunichi Dragons manager Kazuki Inoue, who is stepping down at season’s end over poor results, has become a hot topic. While reports have floated Chunichi alumni Masahiro Araki and Hiroyasu Ibata, or outside hire and former SoftBank manager Kimiyasu Kudo, the name of Giants alumnus Masumi Kuwata also surfaced, sparked by a speculative tabloid report. On the thread, opinions clashed over the unwritten rule in baseball circles — and the theory that it stems from a “dying wish” of former Yomiuri chairman Tsuneo Watanabe — as to why Kuwata can never become the Giants’ first-team manager. A string of posts also shared results from asking ChatGPT to estimate his odds of landing the job, and the discussion spiraled to even bring up names like Kazuhiro Kiyohara and Daisuke Matsuzaka.

Chunichi Dragons manager Kazuki Inoue has decided to step down at the end of this season, taking responsibility for the team’s poor results.

Attention now turns to who will take over. Within the baseball world and in media reports, names being floated include Chunichi alumni such as team front-office advisor Masahiro Araki and former Samurai Japan manager Hiroyasu Ibata, as well as outside hire and former SoftBank Hawks manager Kimiyasu Kudo.

Masumi Kuwata’s name, by contrast, traces back to speculation tied to a tabloid-style report circulating in the thread — it is not an official announcement. Where opinions in the thread diverged was over the question of “why can’t Kuwata become the Giants’ first-team manager,” with posters citing an unwritten rule against players who spent their entire careers exclusively with the Giants becoming manager, as well as a theory about a “dying wish” from former Yomiuri chairman Tsuneo Watanabe — though neither claim rises above thin rumor. Several posts also cite results from asking ChatGPT to estimate “odds of becoming manager,” but it’s worth noting this wasn’t the AI presenting evidence-based statistics — it was simply a bit of fun that caught on within the thread. There are also frequent references to the 1994 “October 8 Showdown,” but these appear as Chunichi fans’ nostalgic reminiscing, unrelated directly to the Kuwata managerial speculation.

  • Legendary Voice Actor Wakamoto Norio Joins ‘VIVANT’ — ‘Anago-san’ Trends Out of Nowhere

On the October 4 broadcast of TBS’s Sunday Theater drama “VIVANT” Season 2, Episode 19, voice actor Wakamoto Norio made a surprise appearance, sending “Anago-san” (his famous Sazae-san character) trending on social media. The story, reported by zakzak.co.jp, quickly spread to the live-discussion crowd on 5ch, where the thread buzzed with surprise (“more and more star voice actors keep joining — it’s starting to feel like a dubbed movie”) and complaints that his distinctive delivery turns serious scenes into comedy skits. On the other hand, some took it positively, saying “full-on Wakamoto mode, I straight up laughed” — reactions to the same scene were sharply divided.

The reason voice-actor delivery works is because it's anime or foreign-film dubs.
Use it in a Japanese drama and there's zero realism or tension.
It almost feels like a joke.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“VIVANT” is a hard-edged TBS Sunday Theater ensemble drama starring Eguchi Yosuke, revolving around public security, the Self-Defense Forces, and a terrorist organization. In Season 2, the show has leaned again into the “surprise cameo by a star voice actor” device that generated buzz in previous installments, and Wakamoto Norio’s appearance has pushed that further. What split the thread was whether a voice actor’s signature “raw voice” — an asset in anime or foreign-film dubbing where distinctive delivery is a strength — instead feels out of place in a live-action Japanese drama built around realism. Comments like #70, arguing that “it’s a vocal style that only works because it’s anime or dubbed foreign films, and using it in a Japanese drama kills the tension,” sat alongside more favorable takes like #59’s “it’s fun, I can just laugh along with the vibe” — showing a gap between the production’s intent and how viewers actually received it. It’s also worth noting that the thread itself never explains exactly why “Anago-san” became a trending term — that detail comes from posters relaying secondhand reports of social media reactions.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Buruaaaa] Sunday Theater’s “VIVANT” sends “Anago-san” trending with Wakamoto Norio’s appearance — why the serious drama fell apart [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★]“.

  • “Can I Have Just a Bit More to Drink?” Thread Spirals Into Drinking Snacks and Gadget Bragging

A one-line thread titled “Can I have a little more to drink?” that popped up on 5ch’s Nnews VIP board kept spiraling outward — from bragging about drinking snacks to showing off kitchen gadgets, and even to live commentary on a browser game. Talk drifted from food like seared bonito (katsuo tataki), cheese, and a supermarket chain’s absurdly cheap giant apple pie, to vacuum-seal storage bags and how to use a hot sandwich maker, and even off into a game called “Moji Blade” where players battle with spinning-top letters. There was no real conclusion or debate — just everyone posting whatever they liked in a loose, rambling thread typical of the evening drinking hours.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The supermarket chain that came up repeatedly in the thread is a home-center-and-grocery chain centered on the Chubu region that has partnered with the home center Kohnan to expand into Kanto and Kansai. Locally it’s known for its well-stocked fresh fish counters and prepared foods, but in some areas it’s not well known, and several posts in the thread asked what kind of store it even was. The “Moji Blade” game that came up later is a one-off joke-style browser minigame posted on an indie game site, where letters of text battle each other like spinning tops (beigoma). There’s no single consistent point of debate running through the thread — it’s a textbook example of a late-night VIP chat thread, drifting loosely from topic to topic as people post photos of their drinking snacks and kitchen gadgets.

Background and Key Points of Discussion

Sakuya Hiyama rose to fame as the star weather caster for forecasting company Weathernews, and after going independent became entertainment-news fodder over her marriage to pro tennis player Yoshihito Nishioka. The thread’s main points of contention were the timing of the marriage announcement relative to the fan club’s closure, Nishioka’s recent slump in results (ranked 218th at the time of the thread, having lost his first match back after a long layoff), and a previously viral exchange with a fan over an expensive Super Chat donation. While the article itself frames her “accompanying him abroad” in a positive light, the thread mixed in skeptical takes based on publicly available information. Note that replies veering into personal attacks on her or other named individuals have been excluded from this article.

NVIDIA’s entry-level GPU, the RTX 5060, has quietly dropped to a record-low price of ¥75,000, sparking discussion on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Geha)” board. Rather than the price itself, the thread’s debate centered on where to draw the line between entry-level, mid-range, and high-end GPUs — with some arguing the RTX 5060 Ti and above should count as mid-range, and others pointing out the problem that NVIDIA’s only model below the 5060 is the 5050. The discussion also expanded into comparisons with home game consoles, contrasting the PS5’s GPU performance and the unreleased PS6’s projected specs against AMD GPUs.

What are we even gonna do about this?
    4AnonymousOct 4, 2026 21:58
Wild that #2 and #4 on the GPU ranking are both over ¥1 million.
You guys are spending way too much money on gaming.
    6AnonymousOct 4, 2026 22:00
    Re: #4
That just means we're past the phase where gamers are the ones buying them.
    7AnonymousOct 4, 2026 22:04
    Re: #4
The ones over ¥1 million are honestly just sitting unsold most of the time.
But every once in a while Dospara drops one for like ¥890,000 and it sells out instantly.
The 5090 really is on a different level.
    5AnonymousOct 4, 2026 21:59
I'm out of the loop on PC building these days, but
doesn't it run most games fine?
    9AnonymousOct 4, 2026 22:10
    Re: #5
Sure it runs them, but it's not the kind of performance you'd buy new right now.
    10AnonymousOct 4, 2026 22:11
    For 1080p this is plenty.
Once you get into WQHD or heavy 4K titles, the price jumps way up.
The 5090's crazy pricing is because AI folks are buying them up, not gamers.
    22AnonymousOct 4, 2026 22:42
    Re: #10
Recent demanding games want 12GB of VRAM even for the minimum 1080p spec.
    15AnonymousOct 4, 2026 22:27
Unlike the 4060, it's loud, it runs hot, and on top of that it's weak.
Even on the Steam hardware survey it ranks below the 3060 and 4060 — total trash.
    79AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:52
    Re: #15
The 5060's performance-per-watt is actually good,
so if you power-limit it, it ends up both more powerful and more efficient than the 4060 — a straight upgrade across the board.
    82AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:58
    Re: #79
How much are you planning to undervolt from 150W exactly? Are you trying to send it into stutter hell and break it? LOL
    16AnonymousOct 4, 2026 22:31
The 5060 isn't actually an entry-level card, though.
I can tell from the post alone whether someone's never touched one or is just an AMD fanboy (lit. "red believer").
    25AnonymousOct 4, 2026 22:53
    Re: #16
It's NVIDIA's fault for not making a real entry-level card.
Seriously, the only thing below this is the 5050.
    24AnonymousOct 4, 2026 22:51
I get the 5060, but what's with the 3060 price spike?
    73AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:43
    Re: #24
It's got 12GB of VRAM, so if you push it you can still do a lot with it.
    98AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:26
    Re: #24
Isn't it just that the older one is out of stock so it's pricier?
And then there are people who get suckered into buying it.
    28AnonymousOct 4, 2026 22:57
    There's no strict definition of "entry-level" vs "mid-range" anyway…
In my head, the 5060 Ti counts as mid-range
and the plain 5060 is entry-level.
    29AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:00
    Re: #28
Only AMD even bothers making true entry-level cards anymore, lol.
    34AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:14
    Re: #33
    Wait, explain that?
    43AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:24
    Re: #34
Can use every RTX feature, runs AAA titles smoothly at max settings in 4K → high-end → 5080 and up
Can use every RTX feature, runs AAA titles smoothly at max settings, but 4K is a struggle → upper-mid-range → 5070 to just under 5080
Can use every RTX feature, runs AAA titles smoothly at max settings, but only at 1080p → mid-range → 5060 to just under 5070
Can technically play games, it runs → entry-level → whatever junk is left
    47AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:28
    Re: #43
The PS5 can't even run Forza Horizon 6, so it's below "whatever junk is left," lol.
    42AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:23
I don't know what alternate universe you're living in, but 1080p is still 55% of the Steam hardware survey.
    44AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:25
    Re: #42
That's because it includes developing countries too.
If you limit it to developed countries, WQHD and up is the norm.
    51AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:29
If a 20 TFLOPS 5060 counts as entry-level, then the PS5 is basically a pathetic little slug, lmao.
    54AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:31
    Re: #51
The 5060's VRAM is garbage though.
    Not worth buying.
    55AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:32
    5050: low-end
    5060: entry-level
    5060 Ti: lower mid-range
    5070: mid-range
    5070 Ti: upper mid-range
    5080: mid-to-high-end
    5090: high-end
    That's how it is.
    59AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:34
    Re: #55
    The 5090's already been discontinued.
The 5080 is the high-end now.

I wish the last one had a name like a Final Fantasy attack.
    56AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:32
The PS5 is roughly equivalent to a 2060, right?
Of course it's a pathetic little slug then, lol.
Though I won't deny plenty of titles still run fine on a 2060 at 1080p.
    63AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:36
    Re: #56
It was settled ages ago that the PS5's "Oberon" chip is a custom RX 5700 — junk that maxes out at WQHD.
Why do people keep insisting on converting it into RTX terms when it can't use a single RTX feature?
    64AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:36
The PS6 is expected to land somewhere around a 5070 or 5070 Ti.
If it comes in under ¥200,000, it'll probably be seen as better value than a PC.
    65AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:37
    Re: #64
Didn't the leaks say the PS6 is junk capped at around 40 TFLOPS at best?
    71AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:42
    Re: #64
If they slapped a 5070 Ti, memory, a 1TB drive, and a console-customized CPU together and sold it for ¥200,000, they'd go into the red just like with the PS3, lol.
    72AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:42
    Re: #65
AMD's own RX 9070 XT does 48.7 TFLOPS.
The PS6 should come in just a bit below the 9070 XT, so it's clearly above the 5060 but probably in the same league as the 5070 or 5070 Ti.
    75AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:47
    Re: #72
Sorry, that's the Xbox "Helix" with the RX 9070 XT.
The PS6's ideal target is 40 TFLOPS, which puts it closer to an RX 7800 XT.
    76AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:49
And on top of that, that's a chip model that came out over a year ago.
    78AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:50
    Re: #76
Microsoft and Sony just haven't announced it yet for their own reasons — the deal's probably long since been signed.
Sony announced their AMD partnership for the next-gen console a good while back, remember?
    81AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:54
Guess you really do need the 16GB VRAM model?
I'm fine with just 1080p though.
    83AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:01
    Re: #81
It depends more on the quality settings than the resolution.
With 8GB you can even run Wilds at 4K with ray tracing on and high settings.
Even that still performs better than the PS5 Pro.
    86AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:04
    Re: #81
Take Resident Evil 4's PC version as an example.
It's not even that demanding a game by PC standards.
But even RE4 eats up over 10GB of VRAM at max quality in 1080p.
And that's with ray tracing turned off, by the way.

Of course, it's PC, so you don't have to run max quality — you can always tune settings down…
But personally, I'd want at least 12GB to play comfortably, ideally 16.
    92AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:09
    Re: #81
With a 5060 you'd be running medium settings anyway, so it's fine.
Besides, RAM prices are the biggest driver of cost increases right now,
so this isn't really the time to pick "more RAM, just in case" as a nice-to-have bonus — just think of it as: paying the price difference gets you better visuals, and that's enough.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The GPU categories “entry-level,” “mid-range,” and “high-end” aren’t official designations from NVIDIA — they’re just convenient labels users apply based on performance and price. Because of this, the actual performance range behind the same label shifts with every generation, which is why debates like this one keep recurring. The TFLOPS (theoretical compute performance) figures used for comparison in the thread also aren’t a metric that allows simple comparisons between GPUs of different architectures, and this caveat tends to get overlooked when people line up the PS5 or the unreleased PS6 against the RTX series. As for the soaring prices of flagship models, that’s largely attributed to demand from generative AI, which is creating a pricing dynamic separate from gaming demand — a factor worth considering separately from trends in gamer demand.
