Mosquito-Hunting Laser Gun Opens for Pre-Order — 5ch Reacts: ‘I’m Scared It’ll Shoot Me in the Eye’

The story

“Photon Matrix,” a mosquito-detecting, auto-firing laser device developed by a Chinese manufacturer, has raised over $2.5 million on an overseas crowdfunding platform and has now opened pre-orders. It’s billed as being able to take down mosquitoes faster than a swat of the hand, but on 5ch’s Science News+ thread, commenters repeatedly raised concerns about the risk of the laser hitting someone in the eye. Some hoped it could be applied to pest control on farmland or in cattle barns, while others offered the cooler take that existing insecticides or mosquito coils already do the job just fine — with skepticism about its real-world usefulness standing out overall.

Pre-orders open for laser-beam mosquito zapper

Pre-orders have begun for “Photon Matrix,” a device that scans for mosquitoes and fires a beam at them faster than you could swat one by hand.

The manual version would probably sell ten times better
3AnonymousOct 4, 2026 20:57
Put it by the window and it'll probably just start blasting indiscriminately — helicopters, airliners, military jets, whatever flies by
4AnonymousOct 4, 2026 20:58
I'm scared it's gonna shoot me right in the eye
5AnonymousOct 4, 2026 21:00
The mosquitoes it shoots down will fall on the floor, you'll step on them without noticing, and end up with dead mosquitoes stuck to your bare feet.

Hurry up and bring out the 'Hoihoi-chan' already (riffing on 'Gokiburi Hoihoi,' Japan's classic roach-trap brand name)
9AnonymousOct 4, 2026 21:17
That's amazing, Dad
though it's still a little scary
10AnonymousOct 4, 2026 21:26
Isn't there a chance someone unlucky enough could end up blinded by this?
11AnonymousOct 4, 2026 21:27
Re: #1
Let me go ahead and predict there'll be an accident where it shoots someone right in the eye
12AnonymousOct 4, 2026 21:27
If you set this up in a cabbage field, couldn't you grow it pesticide-free?
Feels like farmers all over the world would want to buy one
30AnonymousOct 4, 2026 22:54
Re: #12
Sun-sun and Non-non would get burnt to a crisp too (apparent pet names for the cabbage caterpillars/butterflies that'd get zapped along with the mosquitoes)
14AnonymousOct 4, 2026 21:29
Mosquito season's basically over already. Nobody will find out it's junk until next year rolls around.

Re: #14
There are tropical places where they fly year-round, plus the whole Southern Hemisphere to think about…

Re: #1
If you've got so many mosquitoes you need to run this thing full blast, spraying insecticide around the room would be faster
If you just need to pick off the occasional one, a mosquito coil or electric vaporizer is enough
If you want to swat down mosquitoes as you spot them, an electric racket works fine
And for outdoor camping use, there are already beefier bug-zapper machines out there

Re: #15
Looks like it could be fun though
Looking forward to the YouTuber reviews
16AnonymousOct 4, 2026 21:43
Wouldn't it be really bad if this hit someone in the eye?
18AnonymousOct 4, 2026 21:51
Bug traps are expensive because of the attractant refills
This one just runs on electricity, so it seems like better value
20AnonymousOct 4, 2026 21:58
I can already picture some idiot using this at a campsite and blinding the kid at the next site over
21AnonymousOct 4, 2026 22:05
Before long a knockoff will show up selling for a tenth the price on AliExpress,
or just the laser module itself will get sold separately as a part
22AnonymousOct 4, 2026 22:05
Could actually be useful at campsites, or as malaria prevention in rural Southeast Asia, maybe
23AnonymousOct 4, 2026 22:08
Now you can play sentry gun like in Aliens
24AnonymousOct 4, 2026 22:13
The promo video even dubs in sound effects like a Star Wars blaster — it's not even on sale yet, just open for pre-order on a planned release — too sketchy, I won't believe it without reviews from actual buyers
31AnonymousOct 4, 2026 22:57
This thing is supposed to have a set effective range, plus a safety setting that won't fire if a person's in the way.
So if you put it on the floor, any mosquito outside that hemisphere-shaped effective range is untouched, and once a person walks into the room, they'll have to swat it themselves or get bitten.
33AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:10
Looks like something's going to end up eating that mosquito
34AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:13
I want a laser that automatically destroys all the surveillance cameras around town too
Nobody asked my permission to film me, you know?
36AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:43
200,000 yen, huh…
Are orders really flooding in for this thing?
A Vape mosquito mat would do just fine
37AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:56
This would probably be good for cattle barns and the like
38AnonymousOct 4, 2026 23:58
Stuff like this makes me imagine all the worst-case scenarios — like trying to zap a fly sitting on a piece of paper and accidentally setting the paper on fire,
or aiming at a fly that landed on someone's head and burning a hole straight through their skull instead.
39AnonymousOct 5, 2026 00:47
Whenever an annoying fly, gnat, or mosquito lands somewhere for just a second,
I always wish I could just fire a thin beam straight out of my own eyes.
40AnonymousOct 5, 2026 03:31
Wouldn't a one-push can of bug spray just do the job?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Devices that detect and shoot insects with a laser have become an increasingly common category of Chinese-made crowdfunded products in recent years, and Photon Matrix is one example, having raised over $2.5 million on an overseas backing platform. Opinion on the thread split mainly over safety, with worries about the beam accidentally hitting someone’s eye pitted against voices confident in its precision and looking forward to the product. In Japan, laser pointer output is subject to regulation, and using similar equipment at home could raise compliance questions — though whether this particular product meets Japanese domestic standards was never confirmed within the thread and remains unclear. Some reports put the price at around 200,000 yen, and whether that’s worth it compared to existing electric mosquito repellents or insecticides was another point where opinions diverged.
