  • Charged ¥1.5 Million to Move Out: 5ch Says ‘That’s Just Highway Robbery’

A post claiming a landlord demanded ¥1.5 million in restoration costs after the poster moved out of a rental he’d lived in for 11 years went up on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board. After photos of holes in the walls, rotted flooring, and a urine-stained toilet were posted, the thread split between those saying “that’s way too much of a rip-off” and those arguing “with that much negligence, ¥1.5 million isn’t unreasonable.” Debate continued over how to account for normal wear-and-tear depreciation and how to interpret the official restoration guidelines.

    1AnonymousOct 5, 2026 15:10
Never cleaned, so the place was covered in mold and the toilet was crusted with urine scale.
The flooring in the changing room had a hole in it, and part of the wall had a hole too.
The bathtub's cracked and some of the doors have holes in them.

    That's seriously getting ripped off.

There were so many disputes that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism made a guideline on depreciation standards, but
shady landlords apparently just say "it's only a guideline, we're not obligated to follow it."

If it actually goes to court, rulings follow the guideline, but it's such a hassle that most people give up, so landlords win more often than not.

    Re: #84
Really? I got spooked because it felt way too expensive, but I guess it can't be helped.
As for the negligence, it's basically just not cleaning, letting it get filthy, and keeping a cat.
With 5 people including the kids living there, I figure some of this was bound to happen, and honestly after 11 years I was hoping they'd say "thanks for staying so long" and only charge me something like ¥100,000 for move-out.

I got hit with a ¥600,000 move-out bill for an office my late father used, but I sent a written letter laying out my reasons for refusing to pay, and it ended up being free.

    Re: #90
Tenants have what's called a "duty of care as a good manager" — an obligation to clean regularly and keep the place tidy.
If you don't clean and let mold take over and just leave it, that's on the tenant to pay for.
Normal wear-and-tear is the landlord's responsibility, but the basic duty to restore the property falls on the tenant.
Keeping something you borrowed from someone else clean is just common sense.

    101AnonymousOct 5, 2026 15:49
You don't have to pay that.
    ¥1.5 million is definitely a rip-off.
Nothing listed in Re: #1 is bad enough to need a full replacement, so even going by the book I'd guess it tops out around ¥500,000.
    118AnonymousOct 5, 2026 15:55
    Re: #101
That take sounds way too clueless.
There's no way this stays under ¥500,000 by any reasonable look.

    Re: #103
Depreciation basically applies to wallpaper and cushion flooring over a 6-year schedule,
plus there's the normal wear-and-tear category — scratches and stains that happen from everyday living.
Flooring sometimes gets calculated on the same depreciation schedule as the building itself, so for a wood-frame building (22-year depreciation) after 11 years of residence, you could argue for only paying half even on a full replacement.
It's different for reinforced concrete, but either way we can't really say without seeing the estimate.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

When it comes to rental move-out costs, one benchmark is the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s guideline on “Disputes and Guidelines Concerning Restoration to Original Condition.” Damage and fading that occur from everyday living are classified as “normal wear-and-tear,” which falls on the landlord, and the tenant’s share shrinks according to depreciation schedules — six years for wallpaper and cushion flooring, and for the building itself, 22 years for wood-frame construction, for example. However, this guideline carries no legal force, and as pointed out in the thread, unscrupulous landlords sometimes dismiss it as “just a guideline, not something we’re required to follow” — unless a tenant actually takes it to court, where rulings do follow the guideline, many simply give up and the landlord’s asking price wins out. In this case, tenant-side negligence such as cat damage and insufficient cleaning is also mixed in, making it hard to judge from photos alone whether this is a rip-off or a fair charge.

  • Labor-shortage bankruptcies hit a record 240 cases — 5ch: “There’s always someone to replace them → Turns out there wasn’t, lol”

According to a survey by Tokyo Shoko Research, “labor shortage” bankruptcies in the first half of fiscal 2026 (April–September) totaled 240 cases, up 17.0% year-on-year — the highest first-half figure since records began in 2013. Of these, bankruptcies citing “soaring labor costs” as the reason numbered 130, a 1.7-fold increase from the previous year, accounting for 54.1% of all labor-shortage bankruptcies. Small and medium businesses with capital under 10 million yen made up 66.2% of cases. On 5ch, threads mixed takes arguing this is simply companies that relied on low wages getting weeded out, debate over whether AI-driven automation or accepting foreign workers is the more realistic fix, and pushback against the opinion that “NEETs should just be made to work.”

"Labor shortage" bankruptcies in the first half of fiscal 2026 (April–September) hit a record 240 cases, up 17.0% year-on-year. Having bottomed out at 26 cases in the same period of pandemic-hit fiscal 2021, the figure has now exceeded the prior year's first half for five years running. This also breaks the previous first-half record of 205 cases, set just last year, for the highest since record-keeping began in 2013.
Notably, bankruptcies citing "soaring labor costs" surged 1.7-fold to 130 cases (up 75.6% year-on-year), accounting for more than half (54.1%) of all "labor shortage" bankruptcies — laying bare how wage-hike pressure is accelerating cash-flow trouble at small and medium businesses.
Among "labor shortage" bankruptcies in the first half of fiscal 2026, companies with capital under 10 million yen accounted for 159 cases (up 33.6% year-on-year, 66.2% of the total) — roughly six in ten. By type, bankruptcy filings (as opposed to other dissolution forms) made up the vast majority at 229 cases (up 23.7%, 95.4% of the total).

Japan is built on the assumption of low-wage slave labor, so it's full of companies that simply can't handle raising wages.
Well, the end result is Japan's core small and mid-sized businesses collapse and national strength declines,
but capable people just keep getting bigger paychecks, and the gap keeps widening.

Telling them to work now is probably a case of too little, too late, huh?

Background and key points of this discussion

A “labor-shortage bankruptcy” doesn’t mean the work itself has dried up — it refers to cases where a company posts job openings but gets no applicants, or can’t replace departing staff fast enough, and ultimately gives up on continuing the business. Tokyo Shoko Research’s figures show the count has exceeded the same period of the prior year for five straight years since bottoming out in fiscal 2021, and this time the standout feature is that “soaring labor costs” accounted for 54.1% of the stated reasons — suggesting that small and micro businesses unable to secure funds for wage hikes are the ones most likely to get weeded out. In the thread, opinions clashed between those who see AI-driven automation as the fix for the labor shortage and those who favor accepting more foreign workers, though it’s easy to miss that both sides are arguing from future projections rather than hard evidence. The suggestion that “NEETs should just be put to work” was also criticized as a rough argument that ignores the costs of job matching and training — a difference in underlying assumptions that helped split opinion.

Satisfying your need for validation is a free choice — isn't that just how it is? If anything, it's embarrassing as hell watching celebrities fall over themselves copying random YouTubers and amateurs who got popular with their casual videos.
    40AnonymousOct 5, 2026 15:40
YouTube and social media grow as toys for amateurs, and once things heat up, the celebrity world swoops in and makes good use of it — so it's kind of rich for him to say something like this.

Social media is a service meant for ordinary people who have no other way to broadcast to the world — it was never meant for celebrities to use in the first place.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Worth noting: “Jikkuri Kiite Taro” is a late-night talk show, and this remark came up during a “girls’ talk” segment featuring cabaret hostesses. The biggest reason the comment drew backlash in the thread is that Allen himself is a TV personality who uses social media for work, making the phrase “you’re not even a celebrity” read as self-contradictory. Several replies also pointed out that social media and YouTube originally spread as platforms for ordinary users to express themselves, with celebrities only joining in later — a recurring theme being “who really has ownership of this space?” At the same time, some commenters agreed that women’s social media really is full of one-upmanship, and the discussion also drifted into whether men or women show off more. Some comments, like speculation about the source of cosmetic surgery funds, amount to unverified rumor and shouldn’t be taken as fact.

On October 5, 2026, several topics ran side by side in a casual chat thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyou G” (livegalileo) board. One that stood out was a debate over salespeople wearing Apple Watches: one poster said “wearing one on sales calls would get you laughed at,” and another shot back, “a cheap Casio is good enough.” The same thread also carried an unsourced claim that “labor-shortage bankruptcies have hit a record high,” mentions of Antonio Inoki, chatter about a new pachinko machine, and meme-style back-and-forth banter — a string of short, inconclusive exchanges, one after another.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“Nandemo Jikkyou G” (commonly known as “NanJ”) is a board built for live commentary, where short replies to news and everyday happenings pile up over time, and it’s common for several unrelated topics to run in parallel within a single thread. The post claiming “labor-shortage bankruptcies hit a record high” is an anonymous statement with no cited source or statistics, so it shouldn’t be taken as confirmed aggregate data. Meanwhile, the exchange over Apple Watches shows a contrast in values: those who think a smartwatch looks “out of place” in face-to-face jobs like sales or customer service, versus those who prioritize practicality over looks and say a “cheap Casio” (an inexpensive Casio watch) is good enough — illustrating how opinions on gadgets split depending on one’s job and personal values.

  • Orix Releases 2023 Batting Champ Yuma Tonkyu (29), Set to Re-Sign Him on Developmental Deal

A 5ch thread lit up over news that Orix had given infielder Yuma Tonkyu (29) a release notice, with the team reportedly planning to re-sign him on a developmental contract instead. Tonkyu drew attention in 2023 by winning the batting title with one of the smallest plate-appearance totals in history, but he’s now undergone major surgery combining a meniscus reconstruction, a high tibial osteotomy, and an autologous osteochondral graft on his right knee, and is expected to miss the entire upcoming season as well. In the thread, some expressed shock, recalling that Ichiro had once singled him out for praise, while others pointed out that switching players to developmental contracts is being used as a way to dodge free-agent compensation and to free up active-roster spots — sparking a debate over how the developmental system is being run.

If anything, this IS the compassionate option — he's likely to miss the whole season again next year

Background and Key Points of the Debate

In 2023, Tonkyu cleared the minimum plate-appearance requirement and led the league in batting average to win the batting title, but due to the gap in plate appearances compared to Kenya Kondo, some called him “the weakest batting champion in history” — he was a divisive figure even back then. A developmental contract is a roster category separate from the active (“ichigun-eligible”) roster: there’s no salary cap, but players on it are usually exempt from being claimed as free-agent compensation, which lets teams use it as a way to free up an active roster spot while still holding onto an injured core player. The thread also noted that because Japanese baseball lacks a proper injured-list system, this kind of practice hasn’t become a major issue even for the players’ union. One point readers often get wrong is that a “release notice” doesn’t automatically mean retirement or leaving the team — as in this case, a player can be re-signed as a developmental player while still aiming for a comeback.

Yamamoto: 'Can't get motivated as the third starter' (picking his nose, visibly unbothered)

Background and key points of this discussion

Ohtani’s ’94 at-bats without a home run’ is a number that captures just how long his power drought has stretched, and the thread’s repeated use of ‘career-worst’ drives home how serious his slump is seen to be. Most replies pinned the loss on Ohtani’s slump itself, but plenty of others blamed individual plays instead — Edman’s failed bunt, Vovich’s wild pitch — splitting opinion over which was really the deciding factor. There were also complaints about the rotation order: Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who carried the rotation as the only pitcher to clear the innings-qualifying threshold all regular season, was still slotted as the ‘third starter’ for Game 3, which drew pushback. Roki Sasaki’s outing — used in a reliever-like role and working two scoreless innings this time — was also a talking point, though the source material doesn’t indicate how he’ll be used going forward.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geisports Sokuho+) thread ‘Dodgers lose a close one, series tied 1-1 — Shohei Ohtani gets a hit for the 2nd straight game but is stuck on a career-worst 94 at-bats without a homer; Roki Sasaki tops out at 164.3 km/h with two scoreless innings… Game 3 is Yoshinobu Yamamoto.’

  • Sasaki Roki Fires Scoreless Relief Outing, Hits Personal-Best 164.3 km/h (102 mph)

On 5ch’s live-game-thread board (“Nandemo Jikkyo G”), Sasaki Roki’s scoreless postseason relief outing became a hot topic. Despite issuing two walks and a hit-by-pitch in the first inning, he shut down every batter after that, and his top speed of 164.3 km/h broke his regular-season personal best of 163.9 km/h. Opinions in the thread split between praise for “getting results despite control problems” and worry that he’s “too scary to trust” and only “got bailed out by his own wildness,” with the discussion spilling over into Yamamoto Yoshinobu’s workload and Ohtani Shohei’s hitting slump.

Yamamoto Yoshinobu, forced to carry the team again

    Background and Talking Points

Sasaki Roki, Ohtani Shohei, and Yamamoto Yoshinobu are all teammates on the Dodgers, and Sasaki has increasingly been used in relief during the postseason. In this outing, he struggled with control — issuing two walks and a hit-by-pitch in the first inning — but shut down the batters who followed and finished scoreless, with his top speed of 164.3 km/h breaking his regular-season personal best of 163.9 km/h. The thread split between those praising him for “getting results regardless of the stat line” and skeptics arguing that control shaky enough to walk batters — even when borderline pitches get called balls — is “too scary to rely on.” Looking only at the scoreless result makes the outing seem dominant, but the headline alone doesn’t convey that he was pitching out of trouble with runners on almost every batter.

  • Nikkei Average Climbs Back Above ¥70,000 — 5ch Reacts: ‘Guess It’s My Stocks’ Turn to Drop’

On October 5, 2026, it was reported that the Nikkei average had climbed back above ¥70,000 for the first time in about three months. The move was attributed to fading expectations of an early additional U.S. rate hike, which sparked a wave of buying centered on AI and semiconductor-related stocks. The news drew a flurry of reactions from individual investors on a 5ch thread. Even though the index as a whole rose, many posters complained that their own holdings — such as Toyota and Aeon — had actually fallen, and opinions were far from unanimous, with some warning of an overheated market or an AI bubble, and others debating the yen-dollar exchange rate.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The Nikkei’s climb back above ¥70,000 appears to stem from fading expectations of additional U.S. rate hikes, which sent capital back into risk assets and concentrated buying on semiconductor-related names like Kioxia that carry high hopes for AI demand. Within the thread, in contrast to the headlines touting higher stock prices, many investors voiced frustration that individual holdings such as Toyota and Aeon were underperforming — highlighting a point often overlooked in market coverage: a rising index doesn’t necessarily mean every stock is rising with it. Investors were also split over whether U.S. policy continuity and AI investment can be sustained, and over how to read the current dollar-yen level, with no single consensus emerging on what lies ahead.

  • Wakai Koto Lands First Lead Role in Live-Action ‘Ninja Hattori-kun’ — Mrs. GREEN APPLE to Perform Theme Song, Frontman Ohmori Genki Makes Cameo

Kouto Wakai, guitarist of Mrs. GREEN APPLE, will take on his first lead drama role in a live-action adaptation of “Ninja Hattori-kun,” according to a Bunshun report. The band will perform the theme song, with vocalist Genki Ohmori also making a cameo appearance. Wakai has actually been active as a TV personality for two and a half years already, hosting a music program, but many thread commenters said they were only finding out about it today. Reactions were split between those questioning the point of a live-action adaptation or struggling to tell Wakai and Ohmori apart, and those describing the band’s expansion into dramas and signature TV shows as going the “idol agency route” toward becoming a “national group,” versus others puzzled about who was even asking for this.

The world truly belongs to Mrs. GREEN APPLE right now. They’ve got their own TV show, they’re branching into acting, and now one member has even landed his first lead drama role…

You can tell the industry is trying to mold them into the next SMAP

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Ninja Hattori-kun,” created by Fujiko Fujio A, has been adapted repeatedly into anime, tokusatsu, and live-action formats since its serialization began in the 1960s, but its core recognition skews toward middle-aged and older audiences — as thread commenters pointed out, it’s “no longer resonates with younger generations.” Meanwhile, Mrs. GREEN APPLE has spent the past few years building up individual members’ careers as media personalities, including Wakai’s role hosting the music program “M:ZINE,” and this new lead role is an extension of that trend. The thread split along a familiar fault line: whether the band’s expanding scope reflects them solidifying their status in the entertainment industry, or whether it’s a “selling out” departure from their musical identity — with many also questioning the very premise of adapting the original work into live action. Worth noting: a “cameo appearance” refers to a brief background role, easily mistaken for a starring part, but it actually carries little weight in the final work.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Bunshun] Mrs. GREEN APPLE guitarist Kouto Wakai to take first lead drama role in live-action ‘Ninja Hattori-kun’… Mrs. GREEN APPLE to perform theme song, Genki Ohmori also cameos [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★].”

  • Lunch in Japan Now Costs Around ¥1,500 — 5ch Reacts: ‘Fifteen Hundred Yen? …Fine, I Guess’

On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo” (Anything Live) board, a thread exploded over lunch now routinely costing around ¥1,500. Posters swapped specific shops and prices — “¥1,200 is the going rate in Tokyo,” “Yayoiken gives you all-you-can-eat rice for ¥1,000” — while mockery aimed at people who eat out clashed with pushback from the restaurant side, who argued that passing rising labor costs on to customers is simply unavoidable. Many also pointed out that pay raises haven’t kept pace with inflation, exposing a deeper divide between those who cook at home and those who eat out.

Poor guy: "AAAAH I'm getting the yakiniku bento, tea, a FamiChiki, AND a meat bun!!! ¥1,500? Eh, fine by me 🙆‍♂"

    This is genuinely hilarious

    Re: #32
Sorry to say it, but most of the people crowding into those restaurants are poor
Rich people have the skill to pick good ingredients, the ability to cook, and the free time to make their own meals
Poor people have none of that, so they're stuck relying on eating out
no matter how much prices go up

Re: #39 Exactly this, it's still way too cheap if anything

Everyone says wages are rising, but the actual take-home increase is pretty underwhelming

Well, that's probably part of it, but
just making a bit extra at dinner the night before works fine as a side dish
    I discovered this myself

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The rise in restaurant prices stems not just from higher ingredient costs but from restaurants passing on rising labor costs to customers. In the thread, posters on the restaurant side explained that raising prices to cover wage increases is simply common sense, suggesting it’s a mismatch to view the hikes as mere “opportunism” or “price gouging.” At the same time, some pointed out that pay raises haven’t kept pace with rising social insurance costs and inflation — a structural issue felt more acutely by workers at small and midsize companies than at large corporations. Where opinions in the thread diverged was over whether relying on eating out is a matter of personal responsibility or a structural problem: home cooks who dismissed those who eat out as “idiots” never quite squared off against the more relative point that Japanese dining out remains cheap by global standards. The thread also saw a “rich vs. poor” framing thrown around, but this was exaggerated rhetoric within the discussion, not based on any actual income-distribution data presented.
