Portugal Tops Group With Four Straight Nations League Wins Without Ronaldo — Xavi’s Netherlands Also Picks Up Second Win

The story

Portugal, playing without Cristiano Ronaldo, have won their first four matches of the UEFA Nations League. In the October 4 clash with Norway, they conceded a stunning goal to defender Ajer in the first half, but Cancelo’s long-range strike leveled the score before Portugal completed a 2-1 comeback win. Meanwhile, the Netherlands — in Xavi’s debut as a national team manager after stints at Barcelona and Bayern — also picked up their second win. Opinions in the thread were split between “the team actually works better without Ronaldo” and “it’s too early to judge since they haven’t faced any strong opponents yet,” and the discussion also branched out into comparisons of Ronaldo’s and Messi’s career records.

〈UEFA Nations League〉 ◇ October 4 (October 5 Japan time) ◇ League A, Groups 2 & 4, Matchday 4

In Group 4, Portugal (FIFA ranking 5th), playing without Cristiano Ronaldo, came from behind to beat Norway (ranked 19th) 2-1, extending their winning streak to four matches to open the tournament.

In the 36th minute of the first half, Norway’s Ajer scored a jaw-dropping goal from a set piece. But two minutes later, Portugal answered right back when Cancelo, receiving a long throw-in, unleashed a powerful long-range strike.

Turns out they're actually strong without Cris Ronal (a common nickname mashup of "Cristiano Ronaldo")
3AnonymousOct 5, 2026 12:58
Look at the way that's phrased…
4AnonymousOct 5, 2026 12:59
Cris Ronal's kind of turning into old-school Hidetoshi Nakata (Japanese midfielder famous for his aloof, abrupt exit from the national team)
48AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:31
Re: #4
What do you mean by that?
7AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:02
Cris Ronal himself has turned into the towel-twirling bench type, but I doubt a team that scapegoats someone keeps its momentum going for long either.
At the World Cup, the team was awful as a unit even without Ronaldo.
8AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:04
That was a pretty childish way to walk away.
For a club, maybe, but doing this to the national team is just too disappointing.
43AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:27
Re: #8
Even at club level he's pulled Edmundo-level dumb stunts, like getting fired over leaking information. (Edmundo — Brazilian striker notorious for erratic, scandal-prone behavior)
9AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:05
Gonçalo Ramos finds the net every single time.
Even if Ronaldo comes back, he should just be a 15-minute sub when they're behind.

Portugal's Ball and Chain: Cristiano Rona — Shackle Edition #18 (a running pun swapping "kase" (shackle) in for "kai" (-th time) in the usual thread-numbering convention)

Re: #10
That's creepy.
Explain yourself.
11AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:06
Which Xavi are we even talking about?
13AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:07
Can't really say much yet since they haven't played a top team.
You can't judge anything from matches against weak or mid-tier countries alone.
15AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:09
Ramos has some luck on his side too — like mishit shots bouncing just right to dodge the defender's block timing.
17AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:12
The team atmosphere's definitely better now.
If Ronaldo hadn't been around for the World Cup and the Euros, things probably would've turned out differently.
19AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:13
Xavi in his first job as a national team manager and Klopp back in the dugout — their fortunes split immediately.
20AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:13
No one's telling me, so guess I'll go ask on Korea's version of 5ch…
21AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:14
Ah I see.
They won the Nations League before too, even with Ronaldo on the team.
So it's not really related then.
22AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:15
Cris Ronal's just as much of a legend as Messi, but somehow he gets underrated.
29AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:19
Re: #22
Cris Ronal's amazing, but Messi's like three tiers above him.
32AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:21
Re: #22
Probably because he's never won or performed well outside the Euros.
52AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:34
Re: #22
Saying he's on Messi's level is way overrated lol
Their goal counts were just close — there's no comparing their actual contribution to matches.
Look at the other stats and it's obvious.
23AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:15
Ronaldo stopped being able to compete at the top level once he started cashing in on that Saudi oil money, right?
26AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:17
Wait wait wait! It's THAT Xavi from Barca?? lol When did he become a manager?? lol
28AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:18
Well, of course it turns out like this once you remove the intentional debuff.
30AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:20
Of course Portugal's strong without CR7 — they can finally play with a full 11 players.
31AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:20
Re: #11
Xavi — the Xavi from the Xavi-and-Iniesta duo.
42AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:25
Re: #31
So it really was that Xavi after all, huh… But whyyy though? The Orange nation (Netherlands)?
53AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:34
Re: #42
Cruyff → Pep → Xavi.
So in a way, Cruyff's philosophy has come back home to the Netherlands.
33AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:21
Someone with one World Cup win and two runner-up finishes isn't even comparable to someone who's never reached a final.
34AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:21
The old Ronaldo would've scored that one — he missed it this time.
35AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:21
Well, Cris Ronal himself was dominating the Nations League like crazy not too long ago.
The Nations League's always a bit questionable in terms of how serious or high-intensity it really is, so it's not that reliable a reference point.
36AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:22
Cris Ronal might be the greatest striker in football history, but his self-centeredness is also world-class, so once he declined he turned into an old-guard nuisance.
This is what happens when you get the timing of your exit wrong.
50AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:32
Re: #36
Cristiano's never really worked for the national team to begin with — you have to build a whole "Cristiano system" around him at club level.
37AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:22
Japan: strongest in friendlies.
Portugal: strongest in the Nations League.
38AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:22
Feels like Germany actually got weaker after Klopp took over.
49AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:32
Seeing a scissors move with zero snap, Miura Kazu-level, at the World Cup made me sad. (Kazuyoshi Miura — legendary Japanese striker still playing professionally into his 50s)
54AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:35
Re: #49
Kazu's just doing his own thing at club level lol
But at the World Cup that's no joke lol
56AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:39
Messi's not the type who relies on work rate, so he's still got plenty left in him, but Ronaldo… not so much.
60AnonymousOct 5, 2026 13:41
Re: #56
Cristiano's thing was explosiveness.
His burst of speed was just insane.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Unlike the World Cup or the European Championship, the UEFA Nations League has a wide gap in strength between competing nations, and so far Portugal’s matches — including this one against Norway — have mostly been against opponents who aren’t quite evenly matched, with clashes against top-tier teams still to come. That’s why the thread was split between the view that “the team is more cohesive without Ronaldo” and the view that “the opposition level has been too low to draw any real conclusions,” with no consensus reached. There were also several replies asking to confirm “wait, is this the Xavi from Barcelona?” — showing that many readers weren’t aware this is his first stint as a national team manager since stepping down from club management. The Ronaldo-vs-Messi comparison, meanwhile, is the kind of topic that resurfaces in nearly every thread like this one, and while the back-and-forth over their respective records continued here too, no new conclusion was reached.
