  • Demon Slayer hits ¥40.2 billion box office, climbs to 3rd all-time — beating Spirited Away sparks buzz on 5ch

On 5ch’s “Live Anything Goes” board (なんでも実況G), it became a hot topic that the film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle Arc Chapter 1 had reached ¥40.24 billion at the box office, climbing to 3rd place all-time domestically. That figure surpasses Spirited Away’s ¥31.68 billion, and posters shared the latest box office ranking chart in the thread. Discussion ranged widely — predictions for the next chapter’s box office (opinions split from ¥20 billion to over ¥30 billion), the impact of the COVID pandemic and the Hollywood strikes on audience turnout, and comparisons with the bonus-goods sales tactics of classic Ghibli films — turning into a debate that went well beyond simple number comparisons.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Domestic Japanese box office figures are based on numbers released by Kogyo Tsushinsha (the box office reporting body), tallied as cumulative attendance and revenue since a film’s release. The figure cited in the thread — “¥169.6 billion combined across Demon Slayer’s two all-time franchise entries” — is a total across multiple films, separate from the single-film box office rankings, and it’s easy to confuse with the ¥40.24 billion figure for Chapter 1 alone, so some caution is warranted. The thread also debated whether theaters “monopolizing” screening slots could violate antitrust law, but seat allocation is largely shaped by the business customs of theaters and distributors, and isn’t something that can simply be judged black-and-white as a legal matter. The fact that Ghibli films’ box office totals look low compared to recent blockbusters is also influenced by the smaller number of theaters at the time of their release and by the different exhibition practices of an era before assigned-seat screenings — reading it as a straightforward measure of relative popularity risks being misleading.

  • Mexican Couple: ‘Japan Should Be More Vegetarian-Friendly’ — 5ch Fires Back: ‘It’s a Dashi Culture, Man’

A Mexican couple, Betty and Joel, visited Japan for a 12-day honeymoon and told news outlets they struggled to find gluten-free food — and their comments became a hot topic on the 5ch forum. Some posters pointed out that since Japanese cuisine is built around dashi (soup stock) and rice, there are still options if you just avoid wheat, while others said it’s understandable that dedicated vegetarian or vegan menus remain scarce. The thread was dominated by a clash between the “when in Rome” crowd and those arguing that if Japan wants to profit from inbound tourism, it should accommodate foreign visitors’ dietary needs.

    60AnonymousSep 11, 2026 09:21
Vegetarian-focused businesses just don't turn a profit in Japan yet because there aren't enough customers. Instead of complaining, bring a hundred friends and wipe out the convenience store salad section. Go to a tonkatsu shop, skip the cutlet, eat nothing but the shredded cabbage garnish, and pay full price for it. Prove it's profitable, and Watami will probably open a chain for it.
    62AnonymousSep 11, 2026 09:26
Why are foreigners so demanding? When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Normally you'd travel with the mindset of being grateful for the privilege of visiting, right?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Gluten-free and vegetarian are technically separate dietary restrictions, but the thread largely conflated the two. In practice, Japanese home cooking and restaurant food often use wheat in soy sauce and noodles, and even dishes that look vegetable-based frequently rely on dashi made from bonito flakes or dried sardines — meaning the options are narrower than they appear for anyone avoiding meat or fish. In recent years some restaurants have begun offering gluten-free or vegan options, but posters noted that many have shut down due to low customer numbers, making the balance between inbound demand and the cost of accommodating it a real practical hurdle. The thread saw a persistent split between a self-responsibility camp (“you should research before visiting”) and those arguing that a country branding itself as a tourism destination should meet visitors halfway — a debate that resisted any simple right-or-wrong conclusion.

  • Fashion Pro Claims ‘Middle-Aged Men Who Retreat to Comfy Clothes Are Lame’ — Reactions Split

A fashion-themed YouTube Shorts video arguing that “middle-aged men who retreat into comfortable, low-effort outfits as they age look lame” sparked a debate on 5channel’s “Whatever Live” board (Nanademo Jikkyou G). The video criticizes men who stop putting effort into their clothing as they get older, and the thread that followed was split: some pushed back with comments like “once you’re older you don’t need to care about fashion” and “there’s no point dressing up once you’re married,” while others offered more practical takes, such as “even cheap clothes work if you pair them right” and “buying just one expensive item is pointless.” Some argued that facial features matter more than fashion anyway, and the thread never reached a consensus.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The spark for this debate was a short YouTube Shorts video posted by a self-described “fashion pro” — the video itself doesn’t offer any verifiable credentials or track record. Discussions about middle-aged men’s clothing choices are a recurring topic on social media, and opinions tend to split between those who see “comfortable clothes” as “giving up” and those who argue that once you’re older or married, there are priorities more important than appearance. The thread followed the same pattern: some agreed with the video’s criticism, while others pushed back with arguments like “attractiveness comes down mostly to facial features, not clothes” and “dressing plainly for your family’s sake is more valuable than dressing up.” No single conclusion emerged. Another recurring point was cost-effectiveness — practical comments like “buying just one expensive item is pointless” and “the overall coordination is what matters” appeared alongside more cynical, industry-critical takes such as “clothes are just cheaply made goods that brand power lets companies sell at a markup.” One thing readers should keep in mind: the video’s “pro” label was never verified within the thread — the discussion rests solely on the self-proclaimed expertise of whoever posted it.

  • ’30-Minute Sleep’ Streamer Daisuke Hori Sparks Controversy After Dozing Off Repeatedly on Day One

Daisuke Hori, who set out on a marathon livestream under the banner of “30 minutes of sleep a day,” repeatedly dozed off snoring during massage sessions from day one, sparking discussion on a 5ch livestream-commentary thread. Some viewers pointed out that “sleeping for a full 30 minutes straight defeats the whole point,” while others defended him after his smart ring failed to register any sleep at all, arguing “that’s not a nap, that’s passing out” or “the ring is just inaccurate.” Opinions have split, with the thread simultaneously filling up with comments praising the sheer brutality of the stream and others calling out false advertising.

    Looks rough.

It's only been 28 hours so who knows how tomorrow goes, but—
reading and responding to garbage comments while 10,000 people watch your every move, running on two 30-minute sleeps—
at this point, maybe 1 in 500,000 people could pull that off.

This kind of sloppy, inaccurate posting—throwing around words like "out cold" to try to smear him—is exactly why the anti-fans are entering the phase where they get mocked.
To be precise, he kept his eyes closed during the 30-minute treatment, and snored a few times within that window.
And besides, he's wearing the ring specifically for moments like this, and it turned out useless, registering zero minutes of sleep—even though Hori himself admitted he'd slept.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

With this kind of “no-sleep livestream,” the constant flashpoints are the sheer difficulty of staying awake for long hours while continuing to respond to viewer comments, and the fact that verification inevitably has to rely on the streamer’s own self-reporting, making it hard to confirm either way. This time, the debate expanded because the two pieces of “evidence”—the readings from his smartwatch-style sleep tracker (a smart ring) and the visible snoring caught on the stream itself—contradicted each other. In the thread, opinions are split over whether the word “short sleeper” in the channel name amounts to exaggerated advertising, and over whether falling asleep during the massage should be seen as a “nap” or something closer to “losing consciousness”—worth noting this isn’t just nitpicking, as questions have also been raised about the sleep-tracking method itself. Note that posts in the original thread containing slander against real third parties, or baseless attributions of medical conditions, have been excluded from this article.

    Background and Talking Points

OCHA NORMA is an idol group under Hello! Project, and this remark came up casually during a talk segment of an official livestream — it isn’t an official agency statement or confirmed information about her health or actual lifestyle, which is worth keeping in mind. On the thread, most reactions warmly embraced her youthful sleep schedule, while others pointed out the contrast with how other, busier groups spent their summer. There were also some baseless speculation and off-color remarks about her private life and appearance, which this article has excluded. Within Hello! Project, workload and scheduling vary widely from group to group, and the reaction to this “summer vacation” story is, in part, a reflection of those differences in activity levels between groups.

  • Is Reselling Really Bad? 5channers Split Right Down the Middle

A thread on 5ch kicked off with the post “No joke, what’s actually wrong with reselling?” and quickly caught fire. Reselling itself isn’t illegal in Japan as a rule — regulation is limited to specific items like concert and sports tickets. Even so, the backlash of “I just don’t like it” and “it’s a breach of manners” remains strong. The thread saw a head-on clash between the self-responsibility camp (if you want it, get in line and buy it) and critics who argued that resellers buying up stock keeps products from reaching the customers they were meant for. Citing differences from secondhand shops, the mask shortage during the pandemic, and real examples from trading cards, the discussion expanded to cover supply and demand, and even whether companies gain or lose.

So the product doesn't reach the consumers who actually want it directly, but it's fine because resellers buy it instead?
If that's really true, then the optimal move for a company would be to force employees into predatory in-house sales and then resell that same stock through their own shell reseller — is that okay with you?

Are there already big companies doing this, by any chance?
    87AnonymousSep 10, 2026 20:38
    Re: #74
Say a reseller buys 100 units but actually only manages to resell 50 — they'll stop buying next time. The manufacturer, unaware of that, will try to make even more than 100 units for the next run. The right quantity becomes impossible to gauge, and in the end the manufacturer loses out — that's the mechanism.

    Re: #110
    Oh, so it's a gift-tax workaround?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Laws regulating reselling itself in Japan are limited in scope, applying only to specific items such as those covered by the 2019 Act on Prohibition of Unfair Resale of Tickets. An individual reselling ordinary goods is, in principle, legal as long as the items aren’t stolen or counterfeit — the main requirement is that anyone running a continuous secondhand-goods business needs a secondhand dealer’s license (kobutsusho license). In other words, the “is it illegal?” question and the “is it acceptable manners?” question that split the thread are actually separate issues, and most of the emotional backlash stems from the latter.

During the pandemic-era mask shortage, mask reselling was temporarily banned in 2020 under the Act on Emergency Measures for the Stabilization of National Livelihood — government intervention like this only happens when a supply shortage becomes a full-blown social problem. Both claims raised in the thread — that “the market still functions fine even with resellers involved” and that “manufacturers and official sales channels only lose out” — capture only part of the picture; the real impact depends on the nature of the product and its supply chain. Readers can easily be misled into assuming reselling equals automatic illegality, but the reality is far more limited.

  • Liella! Stream Sparks Viewer-Count Predictions — ‘Takoyaki Smoothie’ Recreation Also Steals the Show

On September 10th, Love Live! Superstar!!’s “Liella!” held a livestream right after a concert, and predictions about the simultaneous viewer count were flying around the 5ch live-commentary thread from the moment it started. Alongside comments like “It’ll probably hit around 5,000 anyway,” the recurring comparison with “Niji” (Nijigasaki High School Idol Club) got dredged up again, reviving an old argument about viewer numbers that factors in differing conditions. During the stream, reactions to how well the popular “takoyaki smoothie” merch was recreated also had people buzzing.

    Ohh no way lol ×

    It's hell, right…?

    Background and Talking Points

In the Love Live! franchise, a stream’s simultaneous viewer count is frequently used as a yardstick for comparing group popularity. The “Niji” referenced in this thread is shorthand for Nijigasaki High School Idol Club. Threads have long framed differing conditions — such as whether a stream airs right after a live show versus as a standalone broadcast — as “buffs” and “debuffs,” turning the discussion as much into a debate over comparison conditions as over raw numbers. This thread was no different, with posters citing past instances of the same argument and debating whether a simple viewer-count comparison is even valid. Worth noting: the actual final viewer count isn’t confirmed within the excerpted portion of the thread — the “3,000” figure in the thread title is a jab, not a confirmed number. The “takoyaki smoothie” is a recurring food item featured on stream, and opinions were split on how well it matched the version sold at past events.

  • Streamer Daisuke Hori’s 24-Hour Broadcast Adds ‘Nap’ Rule, Sparks Uproar on 5ch

Streamer Daisuke Hori is in the middle of a “24 hours a day, for one week” broadcast, and a new rule allowing “unlimited naps” has become a hot topic on 5ch. Hori has built his brand around being a “short sleeper” who supposedly only needs 30 minutes of sleep, and when the production staff explained that naps, passing out, and microsleeps don’t count as “sleep,” viewers — who already had their doubts — pushed back hard. The thread turned into a nitpicky back-and-forth over where exactly a nap ends and sleep begins, with commenters even comparing it to how little sleep parents of young children get.

So even if naps plus microsleeps add up to 8 hours, he's still technically a "short sleeper"?

There's also a wildly popular course — just 150,000 yen (roughly $1,000) — that teaches you to become a short sleeper like Hori and use your time more efficiently.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Daisuke Hori has built a following around time-management content, branding himself as a “short sleeper” who functions on just 30 minutes of sleep, and this week-long, round-the-clock broadcast was being watched as a live demonstration of that claim. The sticking point for the thread was the broadcast team’s explanation that “naps,” “passing out,” and “microsleeps” are all treated as separate from “sleep” — logic which means the “30 minutes of sleep” tagline never technically breaks, no matter how much total rest time adds up. Viewers seized on the vagueness of that distinction, and the thread lit up with half-joking comparisons to how little sleep parents of young children get. Some replies also referenced unverified rumors about Hori’s past activities; this article excludes those unsubstantiated claims.

A post titled “After I bought a car, I got to know the geography, the landmarks, and all the good restaurants — my whole range of movement expanded” went up on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board (a general live-chat board), drawing over 40 replies. The thread split over whether owning a car itself is what determines your range of movement, or whether the real factor is where you live — city versus countryside. One side argued that cities offer a dense living sphere even without a car, while the other insisted that in rural areas life simply doesn’t function without one — and the two sides never quite met in the middle.

    125AnonymousSep 10, 2026 20:10
    Re: #106
You're just someone who walks everywhere, aren't you

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Car ownership rates are higher in rural areas than in cities, so the two sides of this debate start from fundamentally different premises: people in city centers with well-developed public transit who “don’t feel inconvenienced without a car,” versus people whose daily living sphere simply isn’t reached by public transit at all. The thread’s disagreement also never resolved, since some see the expansion of one’s range of movement as an effect of owning a car, while others see it purely as a matter of population density where you live.

As one reply pointed out, higher-income groups do tend to have higher car-ownership rates, and it’s actually been observed that even in urban areas, people are more likely to own a car as their income rises. It’s worth keeping in mind that the simple “city = no car needed” dichotomy tends to ignore factors like disposable income and family situation.

Claims like “owning a car makes you popular with women” or “no car means a narrow range of movement” don’t go beyond personal anecdotes, and no verifiable data was presented in the thread either. It’s entertaining as a read, but shouldn’t be taken as a generalizable conclusion.

    I'll go next time.
    Thanks! (Kansai-ish slang)

No idea about outside the district
But it's a shopping street that's just fun to walk through
    97AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:00
How far are you heading back from Kurashiki?
Well, at this hour you could probably even make it to Tokyo on the shinkansen
    98AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:01
    Re: #97
    Himeji, so it's close lol
    100AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:03
    Re: #98
Looked it up, even a regular train takes 2 hours…
Yeah, that's actually a pretty ideal distance
    104AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:04
    Re: #98
    Really? That's super close.
    Did you drive here?
Not that the grass is always greener, but honestly Himeji seems way more appealing to me than Kurashiki
    112AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:10

    Nights are great too

    Nice.
Having what looks like someone on their way home from work in the shot gives it that everyday feel amid the tourist spot

    Re: #112
The historic district is best at night
    118AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:12

    Lovely, isn't it?

    Background and Key Points

Kurashiki’s Bikan Historical Quarter is a preserved townscape lined with Edo-era white-walled storehouses, known as a tourist destination home to the Ohara Museum of Art, Japan’s first private museum dedicated to Western art. The Horseshoe Crab Museum mentioned in the thread is actually located not in Kurashiki but in the neighboring city of Kasaoka, a fair distance from the city center, so the “that’s far” reactions are geographically fair. As for the distance to Himeji, it’s about a 30-minute ride by shinkansen or roughly 2 hours by local train, so the split reactions of “that’s close” versus “the other place is more appealing” likely reflect differing tastes in city size and tourist attractions. The freewheeling live commentary of a solo traveler, bouncing off replies from apparent locals, makes for an exchange that rediscovers the charm of a regional city.
