  • Traveling Alone Makes You a “Loser”? 5ch Erupts Into Fierce Debate

A thread that started with the post “Anyone who travels alone is a loser” sparked heated debate on 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board. The original poster argued that “traveling with others multiplies the fun,” treating solo travel as proof that someone has no friends. Solo-travel defenders fired back, saying “you can decide everything at your own pace” and “you meet new people on the road,” and the exchange quickly escalated. Before long, the thread drifted away from travel itself and into pointed jabs at each other.

Huh? If you actually have a life, you'd die surrounded by family, wouldn't you?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

In Japan, solo dining options like “hitori yakiniku” (solo grilled-meat dining) and “hitori karaoke” (solo karaoke) have become widely accepted for the “ohitorisama” (people who do things alone) crowd, but travel is still widely assumed to be something done with friends or family. This thread played out that same clash in values: one side treated solo travel as proof of loneliness, while the other championed the freedom of “not having to coordinate schedules with a companion.” Interestingly, the very poster who dismissed solo travel later criticized another solo hobby — mountain climbing — as “unproductive,” and other commenters were quick to call out the contradiction. The real fault line wasn’t whether travel itself is good or bad, but differing views on whether enjoying things alone is valid in the first place — and, true to form for a 5ch thread, it ended with no clear resolution, both sides talking past each other.

  • Me: “Isn’t CoCo Ichi Pricey for What You Get?” Mysterious Forces: “Must Suck Being Poor!!!”

When a thread starter on 5ch’s Newsokuvip board posted, “Isn’t CoCo Ichi kind of pricey for the quality?”, other users pushed back one after another with replies like “It’s cheap” and “It’s a place for broke people.” Those arguing back posted numerous images comparing prices and portion sizes with other chains like Matsuya’s gyumeshi (beef bowl), pointing out that the standard rice serving is 300g — double what beef bowl chains give you. The discussion eventually derailed from the price itself into a nitpicky argument over the definition of “topping,” and it dragged on without ever reaching a conclusion.

CoCo Ichi is one of the cheapest restaurant chains out there
No matter how you look at it, I think CoCo Ichi has the lowest average spend per customer
It's one of the cheapest places to eat, so complaining about the taste is just wrong

    For comparison

On top of that, the rice is 300g by default
That's double the rice in Matsuya's gyumeshi, you know?

CoCo Ichibanya is a place for broke people
It's wrong to judge a bottom-tier-priced place on whether it tastes good — that's a completely different value system

Despite being the cheapest, you get filled up on rice
It's a cheap place that leaves you satisfied

    Re: #80
Just go on eating your plain curry forever saying it's cheap and delicious lol

Background and Key Points of the Debate

CoCo Ichibanya lets customers adjust their rice in 200g increments, and even the standard serving is 300g — double what beef bowl chains typically give. Because of this, comparing only the base price against chains like Matsuya or Sukiya can make it look overpriced, but once you factor in portion size and customizability, opinions tend to split. In the thread, the “it’s one of the cheapest around” camp and the “once you add toppings it’s expensive” camp never quite found common ground, and before long the discussion drifted from the price debate itself into wordplay over how to define a “topping.” It’s also worth noting that the claim from a poster identifying as a “former employee” — that most customers order the no-topping 200g curry — is unverified hearsay, and nothing in the thread confirms it as fact.

  • Even With ¥160 Million in Assets, Elderly Renters Still Get Rejected — 5ch: ‘Just Get Into a Nursing Home’

According to the head of real estate agency R65 Fudousan, even a person in their 70s with roughly ¥160 million in assets has been turned down during a rental screening. Landlords tend to avoid elderly tenants out of fear of “lonely deaths,” dementia, and the hassle of clearing out belongings after death — meaning a fat bank balance alone doesn’t guarantee approval. On 5ch, this set off a wave of comments like “if they’ve got that much money, just buy a condo or house outright,” while others shared their own experience of being rejected by landlords over age when trying to sell their home and move into a rental. The thread turned into a broader debate over housing choices in old age.

According to Ryo Yamamoto, head of R65 Fudousan, there’s no clear age cutoff where rental screenings suddenly get stricter. Still, most people who come to him for help after being rejected are in their 60s, and there have even been cases of people in their 40s being turned down because of their age.

The main reasons landlords shy away from elderly tenants are worries about lonely deaths, the onset of dementia, and having to deal with the deceased’s belongings afterward. Even someone with more than enough assets can be rejected over these risks.

Yamamoto says there was in fact a case of someone in their 70s with about ¥160 million in assets being turned away. Applicants are often never given a clear reason for the rejection, but part of the problem seems to be that the rental agencies themselves have no track record placing elderly tenants, so vague unease keeps them from even making the introduction.

    10AnonymousSep 11, 2026 10:35

Between them going senile, needing a legal guardianship set up, or starting a small fire — it's a huge hassle for landlords. Honestly, renting to foreigners is less of a headache.

    Background and Key Points

What this article really shows is that there’s no clear age cutoff for rental screenings — there have even been cases of people in their 40s being rejected. Landlords’ concerns center on the risk of lonely deaths, the onset of dementia, and having to clear out a deceased tenant’s belongings, none of which are resolved simply by having more assets. The thread was full of comments along the lines of “if they’ve got the money, just buy a used condo or a house” — but that’s only a workaround after being rejected, and it overlooks people who choose to rent for health reasons or simply to live a lighter, simpler lifestyle. It’s also easy to miss that rejected applicants are often never given a clear reason, leaving them to search for the next property without ever knowing why they were turned down. Some pointed out that programs like UR housing don’t require a guarantor and are easier to get into, though the available units there are limited.

  • Delivery driver: “Can’t deliver without a nameplate” — 5ch: “Nobody puts those up these days”

A thread on 5channel’s Newssoku VIP board saw a poster who works in delivery vent frustration about “customers who won’t enter their name or address.” The post described trouble delivering to customers who list only a nickname as the recipient on online orders, buildings with no name listed, and detached houses with no nameplate on the door. This drew a wave of pushback along the lines of “nobody puts up a nameplate these days,” while others shot back with “of course a house should have a nameplate” and “when several houses share the same lot number, delivery drivers can’t tell them apart” — showing just how much attitudes toward nameplates split along generational and housing lines.

I live in a detached house in a residential area, and looking around, a lot of houses don't have nameplates.

Places like that are exactly where people DO put up nameplates.
It's because you end up with the same address, same lot number.
Delivery companies keep calling asking "which house is it?!", so any decent person puts one up.

In dense residential areas it's common to display the house number, and mine's like that too.
If that counts as a "nameplate," I'd guess more than half of houses have one — but plates with an actual surname on them are the minority.

Honestly, I think the real problem is that multiple houses share the same lot number in the first place.
They should just number everything all the way down so each house is fully identifiable — like ◯◯-cho 3-4-7-2, with next door being 3-4-7-1.

Yeah, I think that every time I see road construction crews or traffic guards out in the summer heat.

    Background and points of debate

Whether or not to put up a nameplate is closely tied to how Japan’s address system works. In housing developments and two-family homes, multiple buildings can share the same lot number, so the written address alone can’t identify a house — leaving delivery drivers reliant on nameplates or house-number signs. On the other hand, since the 1990s, growing awareness of personal-information protection, plus efforts to dodge NHK reception-fee solicitors, have led more households to stop displaying their surname. In the thread, the view that “of course a detached house should have a nameplate” clashes with “it’s normal not to display one, for security and privacy reasons,” and no consensus is reached. Also barely touched on in the thread: newly built lot numbers aren’t always reflected right away in map apps or delivery companies’ systems, so a missing nameplate isn’t necessarily the sole cause of delivery trouble.

  • Digital Agency Hacked, 246,000 Records Leaked — 5ch: ‘Guess We’re Proving We’re a Digital Backwater After All’

The Digital Agency announced on September 11, 2026, that its network systems had been accessed by an unauthorized outside party, and that the personal information of roughly 246,000 people — including the names, addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers of government employees — may have been leaked. The agency says My Number data and financial account information were not included. On 5ch, threads shared information suggesting the breach was caused by the misuse of an account belonging to an outsourced contractor responsible for system maintenance, while other posters criticized the Digital Agency’s institutional setup and debated just how far the real-world damage from the leak might extend.

The Digital Agency announced on the 11th that its network systems, including work computers it operates, had been accessed by an outside party without authorization, and that the personal information of roughly 246,000 people, including the names and addresses of government employees, may have leaked.

The personal information that may have leaked included not only names and addresses but also email addresses and phone numbers. The agency says it does not include My Number data or bank account information.

The Digital Agency apologized, saying, “We are truly sorry for the great trouble and concern this has caused those involved.”

Does a country like this even need an intelligence agency?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The Digital Agency is a relatively new ministry established in 2021, tasked with driving the digitalization of government administration and overseeing many of the shared IT systems used across the government. As some of the replies above note, official statements indicate this leak may have resulted from the misuse of an account belonging to a contractor responsible for system maintenance — a different route from the simple ‘infected USB drive’ theory initially speculated in the thread, which is worth keeping in mind. It’s also unclear from the official announcement whether the figure of ‘246,000’ refers only to full-time employees themselves or also includes family members, and interpretations varied within the thread as well. My Number data and bank account information are said to be excluded, but this is based solely on the current official disclosure, and the scope could change as the investigation progresses — an easy point to misread.

  • Awake for 36 Hours, Slept Just 1: Viewers Say Short-Sleeper Streamer Might Be “the Real Deal”

A thread appeared on 5ch’s livestream-commentary board reporting that a streamer who claims to be a “short sleeper” had stayed awake for over 36 hours, sleeping a total of just one hour during that span. The result reportedly followed a declaration of “I won’t sleep on day two” after viewers accused the streamer of dozing off during a treatment the day before. While some in the thread called it “the real deal,” others raised a definitional objection — “isn’t being a short sleeper about needing less sleep per session, not about refusing to sleep at all?” — and pointed to past streaming stunts where people stayed awake for over a week, leaving the thread divided over what would actually count as "proof."

What, like Shizuka-chan? (the famously bath-loving character from Doraemon)

    Background and Points of Debate

Medically speaking, “short sleeper” describes a physical trait in which someone experiences little to no impairment despite short individual sleep sessions — it’s technically a different concept from deliberately staying awake. As noted in the thread, it’s well known that the longer sleep deprivation continues, the more cognitive functions like judgment tend to decline, and there have been past streaming stunts built around staying awake for extended stretches that drew attention. Whether this particular case stems from a genuine physical trait or is simply an endurance stunt is hard to determine from the stream alone, and it’s worth noting that the thread never reached a consensus, staying split between those who considered it “proof” and those who argued the definition doesn’t even apply in the first place.

  • Sweatpants as Streetwear? Generations Clash on 5ch Over the ‘Convenience Store Look’

A thread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board heated up over whether wearing sweatpants and sweatshirts as everyday clothing is “uncool.” It started with comparisons to Heisei-era fashion, tracing how sweatsuit-style outfits spread over the past few years following the wide-leg pants boom of 2020–2021. Posters who seemed to be older argued things like “It’s ridiculous to ride the train dressed like you’re just popping into a convenience store,” while younger posters countered that “sweatpants are the mainstream look now,” with the argument dragging on into fine-grained disputes over color and fabric choices.

The whole concept of this fashion is going out dressed like you're in loungewear or dance-practice gear
Saying 'black doesn't look like loungewear' means you don't get the concept

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Sweatsuit sets and sweatpants have become a fixture of everyday fashion over the past several years, following the wide-leg pants boom of 2020–2021. One theory floated in the thread was that the trend was influenced by K-pop idols’ off-duty style, but that’s purely speculation from posters, not a verified fact. The debate split along whether sweats-as-streetwear should be seen as “basically loungewear” or as “a style that earned legitimacy through dance culture,” with opinions dividing further down to specifics like color (black versus light gray). What readers shouldn’t mistake this for is a statistical statement about “Reiwa-generation fashion sense” as a whole — it’s just an exchange of subjective opinions on an anonymous forum, and the generational mismatch over what counts as “uncool” is itself the classic shape of this kind of thread.

  • “PE Class Is Just Public Humiliation”: 5ch Debates Scrapping Gym Class — “Catering to the Kids Who Can’t Do It Screws Over the Kids Who Can”

An opinion that school PE class “is nothing but an hour of humiliation for kids who are bad at sports, and should be scrapped” went viral on 5ch. PE has long been a divisive subject — in activities like distance running and ball games, rankings and skill gaps are painfully visible, making it easy for less athletic students to develop an inferiority complex. In the thread, opinions supporting PE for its health and developmental benefits clashed head-on with those calling for scaling it back or showing more consideration due to the psychological toll, and the debate escalated into a broader question of principle: should the benefit of the majority take priority over the suffering of the minority?

That's basically most of Gen Z these days.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The debate over keeping or scrapping PE class is a recurring one, driven in part by the fact that national curriculum guidelines make “physical education” mandatory all the way through elementary, middle, and high school. The thread split over a single question: which matters more — the medical benefit that exercise provides to bone and muscle development during a child’s growth years, or the damage to self-esteem caused by having rankings and failures put on public display? One easy-to-miss point is that the abolition argument isn’t really “exercise itself is bad,” but an objection to the system of ranking and comparison — yet within the thread, “we don’t need exercise” and “we don’t need PE class” ended up getting conflated partway through, leaving posters talking past each other. A difference in values over whether an inferiority complex is something to overcome through effort, or something that shouldn’t be inflicted on kids in the first place, was also part of why the two sides never converged.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread ““For kids who can’t do sports, PE is nothing but the arrogant cruelty of humiliation, so it should be scrapped” — fair point.”

  • Torneko Remake Slammed by Scathing Review — 5ch Users: ‘The Controls Are Garbage’

A scathing review posted on Steam for Square Enix’s HD-2D remake of “Torneko’s Great Adventure” has become a hot topic on a 5ch thread. The review cited complaints about the controls — frequent misinputs during diagonal movement and a multi-second freeze every time the player levels up — and argued that development should have been left to Chunsoft. The thread debated how involved series creator Seiichiro Nagahata actually is with the project, while some pushed back against taking a single review at face value.

I played this a lot back in the day, so I bought it out of nostalgia — nothing but regret since.

    The Bad
Controls are garbage. Diagonal movement is finicky, and you get constant misinputs in a game where every single turn matters.
Still happens constantly even after changing the settings

The log can't keep up, so it's hard to tell how much damage you actually did to enemies.
You can change the log to show 4 lines instead — made no difference

Every time you level up it freezes for about 5 seconds and stops taking input
Who was it that said it'd only be 2 seconds?

Slapping a sloppy HD-2D coat of paint on it isn't enough — did you actually debug this thing?
Wouldn't this never have happened if they'd just let Chunsoft handle development?
Square Enix is disrespecting its users as usual

    Hm? Anything good?

Torneko is the one that made roguelikes accessible and spread them across Japan

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“Torneko’s Great Adventure” is the first entry in the Mystery Dungeon series, developed by (then) Chunsoft using the Dragon Quest IP. In the thread, posters contrast their trust in Chunsoft, which handled the original development, with unease over the team behind this remake. Opinions were split on how involved series creator Seiichiro Nagahata actually is: some say he’s moved into a managerial role and stepped back, while others claim he returned to hands-on work for the latest release, “Shiren 6” — the thread alone doesn’t settle which is accurate. There was also debate over whether it’s fair to judge the game’s overall quality from a single Steam review. Right after launch, when review counts are still low, ratings tend to swing to extremes, and they often settle into a steadier category like “Mostly Positive” as more reviews come in — worth keeping in mind when gauging a game’s reputation.

  • Boyfriend Frustrated After Paying for Every Date, Gets No Thanks in Return — 5ch: “Dump Her Already”

A poster on 5ch (Nyuusoku VIP), troubled by his relationship with his girlfriend, started a thread asking, “Was she after my money all along?” He says he covers all the date expenses himself and single-handedly plans and books their trips, yet he rarely gets so much as a thank-you or anything in return from her. The thread split between blunt replies telling him to “dump her already” and advice suggesting that “since you’re her first boyfriend, she’s probably just come to see you paying for everything as normal — try actually asking her for something and she might change.”

There's stuff that makes me think she was after my money all along.
But I kept telling myself that couldn't be true.
    5AnonymousSep 11, 2026 02:38
I've been paying for everything on our dates.
That's fine, but lately she's stopped holding back at all — even when we go shopping, it's like she just assumes I'll buy everything.
    8AnonymousSep 11, 2026 02:40
Like, how do I put it
She never does anything for me in return
There used to be small things, though
Stuff that made me think "thanks, that made me happy"

    Re: #8
    Like what kind of stuff?
    10AnonymousSep 11, 2026 02:41
    Re: #8
Sorry, I just felt a connection so I replied
Guess there are more couples like that out there than I thought
    12AnonymousSep 11, 2026 02:44
Like, say she's good at baking
She'll tell me, "I handed out homemade sweets to my coworkers and they loved them!"
but she never makes any for me
    That's messed up, right?
    16AnonymousSep 11, 2026 02:47
    Re: #12
Have you not just told her you want some too?

    Re: #12
    Re: #17
So you're seriously getting nothing back from her at all?
And meanwhile you're still giving her stuff.
    Dump her already.
    14AnonymousSep 11, 2026 02:45
People say don't expect anything in return, but you can't help it, right?
    17AnonymousSep 11, 2026 02:49
    Re: #14
    Exactly
It's not even that I expect it, it's more like, I do all this for her and she does nothing for me?
Hearing about all the stuff she does for coworkers and friends just leaves me feeling kind of sour
    24AnonymousSep 11, 2026 02:57
    Re: #17
I feel this so hard, total agreement
There are also cases where it's the girlfriend who picks the date spot and initiates hand-holding and the boyfriend does nothing at all
    15AnonymousSep 11, 2026 02:47
    Re: #10
    You think there's someone else?
We call almost every night until we fall asleep and text on LINE all the time, so I don't think there's another guy…
We always see each other on days off and we're intimate too
    21AnonymousSep 11, 2026 02:53
    Re: #15
I was actually just listening to the girlfriend's side of the story about that couple (a friend of mine in real life) up until a moment ago
From what she said, the girlfriend is pushing through as a working adult despite being physically frail, but the boyfriend held back a year at school, isn't really job hunting, only works a part-time job 3 days a week, and doesn't study much either — total wimpy type.
Apparently this guy — who's too timid to even call over a server at a restaurant — wants to be seen as manly, and he's all "I want to have sex every day!"
She apparently doesn't feel any sexual attraction to him at all
Also, these days she's the one treating him more often, he gets moody whenever she's not feeling well, and she's even the one who helped him find his current part-time job

So yeah, couples like that exist too
    30AnonymousSep 11, 2026 03:01
I want to hear about your girlfriend's background and what she actually does for you
    37AnonymousSep 11, 2026 03:07
    Re: #30
I'm her first boyfriend, so maybe she just doesn't really understand how relationships work
    32AnonymousSep 11, 2026 03:02
    Re: #28
There's just nothing where she's trying to make me happy
Even something small would be fine
    33AnonymousSep 11, 2026 03:03
    Re: #32
    Then just dump her
If she comes crying or actually changes after that, she really does love you
If she just walks away without a fuss, she never cared about you at all
I've cut women like that loose before
Because staying with them is just pointless
    35AnonymousSep 11, 2026 03:06
    Re: #33
    I know, but
    I love everything about her
I've never fallen this hard for anyone before
If only this nagging feeling weren't there
    41AnonymousSep 11, 2026 03:09
    Re: #37
Ah okay, I see how it is
    Have you two traveled together?
    42AnonymousSep 11, 2026 03:10
    Re: #41
Yeah, we've traveled a few times
    43AnonymousSep 11, 2026 03:10
Both day trips and overnight ones
    She likes going out
    46AnonymousSep 11, 2026 03:12
    Re: #43
Does she help decide the destination for those trips at all?
    51AnonymousSep 11, 2026 03:15
    Re: #46
I usually ask what she'd like and then decide the destination myself
She doesn't really know how to plan that stuff
    54AnonymousSep 11, 2026 03:18
    Re: #51
    Yeah, I figured
And I bet you're the one booking the restaurants and hotels too, right?
Why not actually ask her to do it once?

Personally I'd want to thank someone like crazy or give them snacks and drinks for that, so your girlfriend's a mystery to me
    57AnonymousSep 11, 2026 03:22
    Re: #54
    Yeah, I do everything
I don't think she has any idea how much time and money I put into preparing for our everyday shopping and trips
    60AnonymousSep 11, 2026 03:24
    Re: #57
It sounds like it's become "normal" precisely because you do everything
She said you're her first boyfriend, right? That makes it even more likely to feel normal to her
Why not try asking her something like "It'd make me happy if you did this!"
    108AnonymousSep 11, 2026 04:18
Just to check, does your girlfriend actually love you?
    110AnonymousSep 11, 2026 04:23
    Re: #108
She doesn't really say "I love you" on her own much
If I ask her directly she'll say she loves me
But when we're together she gets really clingy in a sweet way
She's the one who snuggles up against my chest, and she'll fix the blanket for me while I'm sleeping — she does have that gentle side
    111AnonymousSep 11, 2026 04:24
    Re: #110
Sorry, I don't really want to say this straight to your face, but
At this rate you're gonna blow up eventually
    112AnonymousSep 11, 2026 04:26
    Re: #110
They say love is blind, right?
    It's basically mild brainwashing
Once it wears off, it won't feel like such a big deal anymore
But if you're seriously determined to fix this, I'll think about how we can actually help
    116AnonymousSep 11, 2026 04:48
Guess it's no good after all, huh
She's only 21 and was a virgin, so I felt like I had to treasure her, and maybe I ended up spoiling her too much
Actually, the other day there was a moment where she basically tried to make me pay for something
When I told her flat out on the spot, "isn't this a bit off?"
she apologized honestly, saying, "sorry, I always have you paying for everything and I guess my sense of it got messed up"
    118AnonymousSep 11, 2026 04:51
    Re: #116
Then a few days later she brought it up again, grumbling on and on about that time
And that's when I started to feel distrustful of her…
    130AnonymousSep 11, 2026 08:22
    Re: #116
The way she outsources her own sense of restraint to someone else is a pretty big red flag

She'll probably keep repeating stuff like this going forward
And she probably won't even think it's that bad, since she can't judge right from wrong on her own

    Background and Key Issues

In Japanese dating culture, the custom of “the man pays more for dates” still runs deep, but in recent years more people have come to expect splitting costs or an equal financial footing, which makes friction likely across generations and individual attitudes. What divided opinion in the thread wasn’t the money itself, but how to interpret the presence or absence of gratitude and reciprocity. Whether it being taken for granted that he pays is really the girlfriend’s personal issue, or whether it stems from the poster never having clearly voiced his frustration until now, can’t be determined from this post alone. Likewise, the explanation that “she just doesn’t understand because she has little relationship experience” is only the poster’s own interpretation, and there’s no way to confirm her side of the story. This should be read with the understanding that it reflects only a one-sided account.
