  • “I Have Zero Self-Confidence,” Poster Confesses — 5ch Replies: “Just Being Alive Is a Win”

A poster believed to be a university student wrote on 5ch about struggling with a total lack of self-confidence. Saying they’ve never been able to believe in themselves since the sixth grade, and that nothing has changed now that they’re in college, the poster drew a mixed response from the board. Some were blunt, saying “That’s because you never put in any effort,” while others offered encouragement and advice like “Just being alive is a win” and “Your abilities look different depending on where you are.” The thread’s central debate became whether the lack of confidence stems from a lack of effort, or from the poster’s own traits and circumstances.

I already feel pathetic just for starting a thread like this on a forum, and honestly all I can see ahead is darkness.

What even is "normal," though? It's nothing like the life I imagined. Everything about who I am is the exact opposite of my ideal self, so I honestly can't stand being me.

No, making someone with no ability put in effort is pointless.
There are people who improve the more they try, and people who absorb nothing no matter how much they do.
    16AnonymousSep 10, 2026 00:57

People who don't absorb anything are just putting on the appearance of trying — they're not actually making an effort in the first place lol

You've got to repeat trial and error and build up a track record of success.
If you don't even try trial-and-error, or you try but never succeed, of course you won't gain any confidence.

No, I never really did. This personality of mine — if that's what you'd call it — has basically been going since around sixth grade.
Before that I think I was actually pretty carefree and had fun.

Of course there are ups and downs, and I do have times when I feel good or upbeat, but when I crash I really do end up crying, unable to do anything, just staring at the floor.

So I've basically had no confidence since around that time. I guess I'm used to it by now — if anything, I get anxious when I'm not feeling insecure and pessimistic.
    24AnonymousSep 10, 2026 00:59

    Re: #51
Wait, were you looking down on OP? lol

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The thread included a reference to the statistic that “1 in 7 people fall into the borderline intellectual functioning range,” but it’s worth noting that the poster never mentioned receiving any medical diagnosis — this figure was raised purely as speculation on an anonymous forum. As illustrated by the example of Sota Fujii, there were also points made that how ability is judged can shift depending on one’s environment, suggesting this issue can’t be neatly resolved into a simple binary of “laziness” versus “personal traits.” Note that replies amounting to direct abuse aimed at the poster or at specific disabilities or attributes have been excluded from this article.

  • JR’s Suica Mascot Vote: The Two ‘Backup’ Designs Get a Lukewarm Reception

A vote to choose a new mascot to replace the penguin familiar from Suica ticket gates and ads has been making waves online. There were three candidate designs — A, B, and C — and posters on 5ch (a major Japanese forum) increasingly suspected the poll was rigged to push voters toward Option A, while the other two drew comments like “not that great” and “just keep the penguin.” The current penguin is an illustrator’s original character that had already appeared in picture books, and rumor has it the high licensing fees are the real reason for the switch. Some posters even posted their own AI-generated mascot designs as alternatives, and the thread also lit up with comparisons to other companies’ mascots.

Let's take a moment to recall how the name "Takanawa Gateway Station" was actually decided.
JR ran a public naming poll for that station.
    Results:
    1st: "Takanawa" — 8,398 votes
    2nd: "Shibaura" — 4,265 votes
    3rd: "Shibahama" — 3,497 votes
    4th (tie): "Shin-Shinagawa" and "Sengakuji"

And after "weighing various circumstances," they ended up with… "Takanawa Gateway."

Assuming the winner will actually be picked from these three options is naive.

    Re: #115
The penguin's high salary is the sticking point, apparently…

Background and key points of this discussion

The current Suica penguin is an original character created by illustrator Chiharu Sakazaki, who had already featured it in picture books before it became the Suica mascot — a backstory that fueled the recurring theory in the thread that JR is dropping it over licensing costs. JR East has also been in the news over cost-cutting moves like reviewing unprofitable rail lines, which lends the cost-reduction theory some plausibility, though it’s worth noting JR has not officially confirmed this as the reason. Opinions in the thread split over whether Option A, treated as the presumed “favorite” among the three candidates, was actually the best of the bunch — Options B and C each had their own share of supporters. Posters also invoked the saga of the public naming poll for Takanawa Gateway Station (a real case where the top vote-getter wasn’t the name ultimately chosen) as a reference point, voicing skepticism that this vote too might just be for show with the results ignored — a context worth keeping in mind when weighing how much this poll will actually matter.

  • Mom Slams Son’s “Otaku Life” — 5ch Reacts: “But He Pays Rent!”

A post on the anonymous VIP board recounted how the poster’s mother had asked, “How much longer are you going to keep collecting that stuff?” about his hobby of collecting merchandise. The poster shot back that since he pays living expenses into the household every month, she has no right to comment. The thread split between those defending him — arguing that as long as you’re paying your way, even while living with your parents, no one has room to complain — and those expressing discomfort at an adult still this obsessed with merch. The discussion also veered into comparisons with women who are obsessed with K-pop or idols, sparking a debate over the difference between devotion to real people versus 2D or virtual characters.

    Background and Points of Debate

A recurring question in threads like this is where to draw the line on “if you’re paying living expenses, is your hobby off-limits to criticism?” Here too, opinion split between those arguing that paying money into the household means no one has the right to complain, and those arguing that as long as you’re living under your parents’ roof you should be mindful of your family’s feelings — the disagreement really comes down to whether financial contribution and emotional independence can be treated as the same thing. The thread also debated why otaku hobbies draw so much distaste, with some comparing it to women’s devotion to K-pop or idols, but that was met with pushback emphasizing the difference between devotion to a real person versus a 2D character, and no consensus was reached. Note that the thread never reveals the poster’s age or income, nor any specifics about the mother’s side of the story — this remains strictly one side of the story as told on an anonymous message board.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Newsspeed VIP) thread “[Image] Awful mom: “How much longer are you going to keep collecting that stuff?”.”

  • Planning to buy a sports car as soon as next year — 5ch: “I was thinking around ¥5.5 million”

A poster believed to be living in Hokkaido started a thread on 5ch saying they want to buy a sports car as early as March next year. Since they didn’t reveal a specific model at first, some commenters warned that staying quiet would “just invite bump trolls” (posters who flood a thread with junk just to keep it alive). Eventually the poster revealed that a Lexus RC F was their top pick, with a budget of around ¥5.5 million, and said they were hunting for a used 2016-or-earlier model with under 40,000 km on the odometer. Some asked about the reputation of the Toyota GR86, and one commenter passed along secondhand feedback from a relative who owns one: “Since it’s a manual, driving around town is rough.” The thread also touched on driving in snowy regions and choosing the right car for the job.

    I've got a relative with a GR86 who says it's pretty good.
Though they bought the manual version, so apparently driving around town is hell

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Lexus RC F is one of the few remaining Japanese sports coupes still powered by a naturally-aspirated 5.0L V8, and as tightening emissions regulations shrink the pool of new cars offering large-displacement NA engines, the model has held onto solid popularity on the used market. In the thread, some commenters noted that the original poster’s initial silence about which model they wanted would “just invite bump trolls,” but once the RC F was revealed, opinions split over the relative merits of the RC F versus the GR86. One remark that “a turbo kei car would beat it off the line” is easy to misread: it’s not about the RC F being slow overall, but about the difference in initial acceleration caused by the weight gap between the cars — a distinction that’s easy to conflate. Note that numerous posts consisting of meaningless repeated words from a single ID were excluded from this article. Since the poster lives in Hokkaido, the thread also touched on winter driving and the need for all-wheel drive, giving the exchange a distinctly regional flavor.

  • Who’s Japan’s Strongest Warlord? 5ch: ‘A Loser Who Couldn’t Even Unify the Country Can’t Be That Strong’

Over on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board, a thread kicked off with the question “Who’s Japan’s strongest warlord — Kusunoki Masashige or Maeda Keiji?” and quickly exploded into a full-blown debate ranking historical warlords by strength. The discussion spread fast, with some backing Tokugawa Ieyasu for unifying the country and building a regime that lasted over 260 years, while others championed figures famous for personal battle prowess, like Minamoto no Tametomo, Kamiizumi Nobutsuna, and Tsukahara Bokuden. The sticking point was how to measure “strength” in the first place — those who judged by achievements and leadership never quite saw eye to eye with those who judged by individual combat ability, and the argument never really got resolved.

Minamoto no Tametomo (old script: 源爲朝) was a warrior of the late Heian period. The eighth son of Minamoto no Tameyoshi. His mother was a courtesan from Eguchi in Settsu Province (present-day Eguchi, Higashiyodogawa Ward, Osaka). He was the uncle of the brothers Minamoto no Yoritomo and Yoshitsune.

    Re: #97
I'll go ahead and say much obliged to that

Background and Key Points of the Debate

In threads like this, the argument is baked in from the start because there’s no agreed definition of a “strong warlord.” Figures like Kusunoki Masashige and Maeda Keiji, who are discussed in terms of personal valor and anecdotes, are being measured on a completely different scale from someone like Tokugawa Ieyasu, whose case rests on unifying the country and building a regime that lasted over 260 years. Part of why Kamiizumi Nobutsuna and Tsukahara Bokuden get hyped up in these threads owes a lot to Koei’s historical simulation games, which have long given them absurdly high stats — that’s more a product of later pop-culture image-building than the historical record. The same goes for Maeda Keiji: his portrayal in fiction like the manga Hana no Keiji looms large, and it’s fair to point out that his actual documented military achievements are fairly limited. Meanwhile, figures like Minamoto no Tametomo and Minamoto no Yorimitsu (famed for slaying the demon Shuten-doji) straddle the line between history and legend. Ultimately, this is the kind of argument that can’t be settled until everyone agrees on what “strength” even means — individual combat prowess or a commander’s leadership.

  • “Momoe Nagisa” — The Character Who Outshined Everyone in the New Madoka Magica Spinoff

A 5ch thread discussing Momoe Nagisa (voiced by Kana Asumi), a character from a Puella Magi Madoka Magica spinoff, was buzzing with activity. Known in the original series as a cheese-loving girl, she’s portrayed in Magia Record with a far more brazen, easygoing personality — including a side of her that looks after Mami. Thread participants traded theories on why she alone remained outside the Law of Cycles at the end of Rebellion, and debated her relationship with Mami.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

At the end of the feature film Rebellion, Momoe Nagisa is depicted as remaining outside the Law of Cycles even after Madoka departs. The “it was for Mami’s sake” theory floated in the thread is purely fan interpretation — easy to mistake for confirmed lore, but it’s never explicitly stated in the work itself. Magia Record (“Magireco”) is a smartphone spinoff in which Nagisa gets an added layer of shamelessness not present in the original: she joins the side fighting a witch outbreak even while knowing full well that her own arrival caused it. This gap between her original portrayal and her Magia Record characterization is what’s driving the thread’s enthusiasm. Also, as noted in the thread, “Red Nagisa” is a separate character who appears in Magia Record, distinct from the Momoe Nagisa of the main series.

  • Kura Sushi to Refund Missed Collab Discount — 5ch Reacts: ‘No Receipt, But My Stomach Remembers’

Kura Sushi has announced it will refund customers who missed out on the 10% discount that was supposed to apply during its collaboration with the character franchise Chiikawa, after the discount failed to be applied at some locations. On 5ch, users shared information suggesting the missed discounts were concentrated among customers who paid with something other than cash, sparking discussion over how the chain would handle cases where customers can no longer produce a receipt. The thread also split over whether refunds should even extend to customers who visited purely for the “Bikkura Pon” prize gacha included with sushi orders — with one lawyer’s view that “the contract is fulfilled once the ordered sushi is served” clashing against the counterargument that “the prizes have real value now that they’re priced on flea-market resale apps.”

    Re: #104
Their stance seems to be that it's the staff's fault for not handling it properly

Background and Key Points of Debate

“Bikkura Pon” is a prize lottery available at chains like Sushiro and Kura Sushi, where customers get a chance to win prizes tied to their sushi orders — this time themed around the Chiikawa collaboration. The thread split mainly over two points. First was the question of who exactly was affected by the missed discount: posters shared that cash-paying customers had the 10% discount applied normally in-store, while only customers who paid via e-money or mobile payment missed out due to a gap in the POS system settings. The second point was the legal basis for refunds, with lawyers split between the view that “the contract is fulfilled once the ordered sushi is served, so there’s no obligation to refund the prize” and the counter-view that “the prize’s value can’t be dismissed now that it’s openly priced on flea-market resale apps” — neither side was settled within the thread. Though not mentioned in the original article, campaigns like this often run into ambiguity under Japan’s Premiums and Representations Act over where a “freebie” ends and a “product” begins, which is part of why companies tend to end up reacting after the fact rather than getting ahead of it.

  • DiverDiva’s First New Song in 4 Years Debuts at #11 on Oricon — 5ch Erupts Into Unit-vs-Unit Fan Wars

DiverDiva, a unit from Love Live! Superstar!!, released its first new song in four years — but the news that it only reached #11 on the Oricon chart became a hot topic on 5ch. Thread posters brought up other units’ numbers for comparison, like “A・ZU・NA at #26 with 2,224 listeners” and “MoaJan at #35 with 1,553 listeners,” and the discussion spiraled from debating the quality of the songs (aside from Eternal Light) and Spotify listener trends into a full-blown popularity feud between fans of other Love Live projects like Nijigasaki, Hasunosora (SS), and Liella!.

    #11, huh

Good news, Pika-Liella (mocking nickname for Liella!) — on Amazon Music you're only down to half.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

DiverDiva is an in-story unit from Love Live! Superstar!!, and this was its first new song in four years at a time when Superstar!! itself has often been criticized for its slowing release pace. The Love Live! franchise runs multiple projects in parallel — Nijigasaki, Hasunosora (SS), Liella!, and others — and on 5ch it’s become routine for fans to pit units and shows against each other using weekly Spotify listener counts and YouTube view numbers. That said, weekly listener counts tend to spike temporarily right after a new release drops, so reading a few days of fluctuation as a definitive trend can be misleading. Likewise, an Oricon rank of #11 is only meaningful relative to the size and makeup of the chart being tallied, so it’s worth being cautious about treating it as hard proof of an absolute “flop.” The thread mixes genuine number-crunching with fans simply trading insults, so readers need to judge for themselves which comments actually reflect reality.

  • Leader Nonaka: “Even Outgoing Meisa Turns Shy and Gets All Flustered Around Fukumura Sae”

Nonaka, who serves as leader of Morning Musume ’25, shared an anecdote about Hello! Project trainee Meisa that sparked discussion on 5ch’s “Hello! Project” board. According to Nonaka, the normally friendly and outgoing Meisa hid behind her and trembled like a nervous puppy when she came face-to-face with Fukumura Sae, known as one of Morning Musume’s longest-serving leaders. While the thread lit up with fond reactions like “that’s rare” and “so cute,” others joked about Fukumura’s commanding presence, and some pointed out that Meisa’s shyness is just part of her personality and not necessarily a reaction to Fukumura specifically — leaving reactions divided.

    Background and Talking Points

Fukumura Sae is a veteran Morning Musume member known for her long tenure in the group, and she’s often described as someone whose juniors and trainees regard with a distinct sense of tension. Nonaka, the current leader of Morning Musume, also holds a mentoring role over the trainees. This latest anecdote spread as further proof of Fukumura’s “commanding presence.” Within the thread, many found it amusing to read Meisa’s shyness as a reaction to Fukumura specifically, while others pointed out that Meisa and those around her have long described her as someone who gets shy depending on who she’s with, suggesting the story may have been exaggerated in the retelling — opinions were divided. Note that the thread also contained unverified rumors about specific members’ personal relationships, but since these could not be fact-checked, they have been excluded from this article.

  • Single Middle-Aged Man Answers Every Reply About the Reality of Aging — 5ch: “Being Unpopular Is My Destiny”

A thread titled “I’m bored, so I’ll reply to everyone” appeared on 5ch’s News VIP board, with a single middle-aged man answering the board’s questions one by one. On the physical side, he admitted to the effects of aging, saying he’d “gotten weak to oily food” and “put on weight easily,” and revealed his appetite has “shrunk surprisingly” — though his erections, he says, are “still totally fine.” He’s one of four siblings in a family of six, though they’re all scattered now, and he himself is single. His hobbies include watching baseball, comedy, and idol videos on Tver (a Japanese TV catch-up streaming app), and while he only finished high school, he says he still reads books. A fellow resident, apparently also 47, joined in, and the two swapped notes on the side effects of hair-loss medication and how their popularity with women has changed over the years.

    Re: #48
    Not sure what I'll do.
Guess I'll figure it out later.
Women in their 40s and 50s are pretty rough, huh…

    Re: #50
I just wish I could live happily.
    Honestly, your 40s and 50s are rough…

    Re: #52
What videos are you watching, old man?
    56AnonymousSep 9, 2026 16:27
    Re: #54
    Mainly Tver, I'd say.
I watch that while half-watching baseball and other sports.
Also comedy shows and idol videos.

    Re: #56
This guy's life sounds kind of empty.
Couldn't you study back in school?

    Re: #57
Yeah, the things you enjoy just dwindle.
Speaking from experience, I've gotten to where I can sit through pretty much any sport now.
I just kind of leave the TV on.
If she's good-looking, a woman in her 40s is about as far as I could go, personally.

    Re: #59
    Having a hobby would help.
I get it, I end up half-watching volleyball while messing with my phone too.
A good-looking woman in her 40s, huh — sure, that could work, but I've never actually met one.

    high school grad.
    But I do read books.
    Not completely uncultured.

    Oh, nice.
What kind of books do you read?
    125AnonymousSep 9, 2026 17:50
Alright! Hope things work out for you someday! Good luck answering everyone!

    Thanks.
    Maybe again sometime.

    Background and Talking Points

The “answer every reply” format is a classic pastime on 5ch’s News VIP board, where the thread starter diligently responds to every question other users throw at them. This time, a self-described “middle-aged guy” fielded questions about aging with striking candor, opening up about highly individual topics like changes in stamina, libido, and appetite. At one point another resident, apparently around the same age, chimed in about semen volume dropping as a side effect of hair-loss medication — the kind of detail that only comes up when people going through the same thing compare notes. That said, by the end of the thread some commenters were calling it “empty,” so opinions on the content were mixed. The thread also contained a reference to an unresolved past incident, but since the facts couldn’t be verified, it hasn’t been included in this article.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News VIP) thread “I’m bored, so I’ll reply to everyone.”
