  • One Piece’s Zoro and His ‘Only Fight Swordsmen’ Rule Spark Debate — 5ch: ‘Bet You Can’t Name a Better Manga’

The thread kicked off with a claim that Eiichiro Oda himself may be breaking the principle he set for One Piece’s Zoro — that to become the world’s greatest swordsman, he’ll only fight other swordsmen — through recent developments involving Luffy (Nika).

On 5ch, the discussion didn’t stop at that question and expanded into a full-blown “name a manga better than One Piece” debate, with posters throwing out titles like Chainsaw Man, Demon Slayer, and Jujutsu Kaisen. Interpretations of Zoro’s rule were also split, with some pushing back that there’s nothing wrong with him fighting non-swordsmen at all.

It's not that he'll only fight swordsmen — it's that he can't be called the world's greatest swordsman unless he fights strong swordsmen
    89AnonymousSep 9, 2026 18:41

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Within the story, Zoro has repeatedly been shown pursuing the dream of becoming the world’s greatest swordsman, a goal that requires defeating the world’s strongest swordsman (Mihawk). The claim at the center of this thread stems from readers’ sense that, in recent years, Luffy (Nika) has increasingly clashed with powerful enemies who aren’t swordsmen, making Zoro’s “only fight swordsmen” principle feel diluted by comparison. That said, it’s worth noting that Eiichiro Oda himself has never explicitly stated in the manga or in official materials that “Zoro will only fight swordsmen” — some posters in the thread pushed back, saying they don’t recall Oda ever setting such a rule — so the premise itself leaves room for interpretation. The comparisons drawn to Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Chainsaw Man are likewise subjective, personal-taste judgments rather than being based on objective measures like circulation figures or popularity rankings.

  • Okamura Minami’s Birthday Event Venue Shrinks from 994 Seats to Just 398

Morning Musume ’26’s Okamura Minami is holding a birthday event, and its venue is shrinking dramatically — from Shintoshi Hall (994 seats) in 2025 down to I’M A SHOW (398 seats) in 2026 — sparking discussion on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. Posters in the thread were split on whether this reflects a genuine drop in popularity or simply fans scattering due to new members joining, with some pointing to other members’ venue histories, like Sasaki Rikako’s, for comparison.

I don't personally know anyone who switched over, but I can kind of sense Okamura's fans drifting toward Nagano.
    47AnonymousSep 9, 2026 18:31
Even if they couldn't book Hikōsen Hall (the 'airship' venue), Ranma Hall's open year-round anyway.
    48AnonymousSep 9, 2026 18:32
Everyone's crying 'too small, too small,' but it's probably just first-part, second-round tickets anyway.

    Background and Discussion Points

The “birthday festival” is a Hello! Project tradition — a solo event for each member — and turnout capacity tends to be read directly as a barometer of popularity. That said, venue size can also shift based on day-of availability, event timing, and the organizers’ budget, so judging rising or falling popularity from seat counts alone may be premature. The thread also raised Sasaki Rikako’s case, whose venue shrank from 933 seats to 368, suggesting a broader trend of scaled-back venues across Hello! Project events generally rather than something specific to Okamura. Others pointed to fan dispersion from new member additions as a possible factor, though it’s worth noting these remain unconfirmed guesses with no official statement behind them.

  • Nagoya Hit by Heaviest Rainfall on Record — 5ch Reacts: ‘Traffic Cones Went Bobbing Down the River’

On September 8, 2026, a linear rainband formed over the Tokai region, bringing torrential rain from Aichi to Gifu Prefecture. Nagoya City recorded 104.5mm of rain in the hour leading up to 4:53 PM, surpassing the 2000 Tokai Flood’s 97.0mm to set a new record for heaviest hourly rainfall since observations began. The highest-level evacuation alert, “Emergency Safety Measures,” was issued for the entirety of Nakamura Ward and parts of Nakagawa and Minato Wards, covering roughly 1 million households and 1.98 million people. Trains suspended service for hours, causing severe congestion at Kanayama Station, and hotel rates in the area spiked sharply that night. On 5ch, opinions were divided over whether the Linear Chuo Shinkansen’s drainage systems could handle the flooding, and over which areas would be submerged if the Shonai River were to overflow.

Nagoya sees 104mm of rain in one hour, surpassing the Tokai Flood

This surpassed the record set during the devastating Tokai Flood of September 2000 (97.0mm), making it the heaviest hourly rainfall since records began.

Citing rising river levels and an increased flood risk, Nagoya City issued "Emergency Safety Measures" — the highest-level evacuation alert — for the entirety of Nakamura Ward and parts of Nakagawa, Minato, and other wards.

    Background and Talking Points

Nagoya’s previous record for heaviest rainfall was set during the Tokai Flood of September 2000 (97.0mm in one hour), a benchmark still referenced today in disaster-preparedness planning. This latest downpour beat that mark by 7.5mm. “Emergency Safety Measures” is the highest-level evacuation alert, newly created under the 2021 revision of the Basic Act on Disaster Management; it calls on residents of the designated area to secure their safety immediately. It ranks above an evacuation order, but doesn’t necessarily mean “life-threatening danger is imminent right this moment” — since it’s issued broadly across entire administrative wards, the designated area tends to be much larger than the actual flood zone. Opinions on the thread were split over whether the Linear Chuo Shinkansen’s Nagoya station section would flood; JR Central has announced drainage infrastructure for the site, but its effectiveness during heavy rainfall like this remains untested. The flood-risk zones along the Shonai River trace back to the Edo-period Shinkawa Araizeki flood-control system, a historical legacy still reflected in today’s hazard maps.

  • “Shut Down Mercari” Backlash Draws Pushback — 5ch: “To Him, That’s His Salt”

After some otaku on X (formerly Twitter) argued that “Mercari should be shut down” and called it “a breeding ground for scalpers,” users on 5ch’s livestream discussion board pushed back one after another. Some pointed out that without resale marketplaces, out-of-print retro games and collectible goods would lose their only distribution channel, while others argued the real target of criticism should be companies that fail to crack down on scalping. The discussion also expanded into calls for mandatory ID verification and debate over whether the true root cause is the blind-box/lottery sales model itself.

If you're an otaku, you've definitely relied on Mercari — buying a used game, beating it, then flipping it right away.
A used game store won't even give you half of what Mercari does.
Also, Mercari's where clueless amateurs list out-of-print books and retro games without knowing their value, so you can snag them cheap. If it weren't easy to sell retro games on Mercari, a ton of them would've just been thrown away.

I don't know much about gadgets, but without Mercari, the only surviving units would be the lucky few that happen to get brought into Hard Off (a used electronics chain).
Buying/selling just the box or just the manual would disappear too.

Broken parts get valued at basically nothing if you bring them to a used shop, but you can score cheap hidden gems, so the more rural you are, the more screwed you are without flea market apps.
Plus the junk-item gacha hits sometimes too.

I'm from the countryside so I get it, but there are also guys scavenging Hard Off just to resell on Mercari, so I can't say it's all good.
Actually, retro game console prices apparently got driven up by resellers.
    24AnonymousSep 9, 2026 16:04
    Re: #23
Sure, resellers driving up prices is an issue, but if items just get thrown away and surviving numbers drop, prices would go up anyway.
Even without resellers, the specialty otaku shops would jack up prices themselves.

I think it's just a matter of whether stuff flows to Yahoo Auctions or Mercari.

But even if you kill Mercari, as long as Japan doesn't pass a law regulating resale — or individual buying and selling in general — another flea market site will just pop up.

Right, and take the Kura Sushi case — the operating company that approved the collab bears responsibility too.
It was undeniably the operator's side that agreed to a system where figures were mixed into the 'Bikkura Pon' capsule prize game and your odds went up based on how many plates you ate — yet only Kura Sushi kept getting slammed unreasonably hard.
Sure, the middleman cut is a problem too, but that's not the whole story.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Peer-to-peer marketplaces like Mercari operate on a system that doesn’t require sellers to hold a used-goods dealer license, leaving anti-resale measures and handling of stolen goods up to each company’s own voluntary rules. The criticism stems partly from frustration with this slow response, but the same system has also supported the circulation of products manufacturers no longer produce, like retro games and out-of-print merchandise — and the pushback in the thread points to exactly this double-sided nature. There’s also the view that soaring resale prices for limited-edition goods and cards are partly caused by the blind-box sales and made-to-order structures that deliberately restrict supply to keep market value high, meaning regulating flea-market apps alone wouldn’t solve the root problem — a point likely to keep resurfacing. Strengthening identity verification, such as linking accounts to My Number, is an area where discussion is already progressing in practice, and the thread’s proposal is an extension of that trend.

  • Self-Proclaimed “Expert”: “Bashing Criminals Is Where Life’s Failures End Up” — Reactions Split

A thread started on 5ch’s “Anything Goes Live” board by an anonymous poster billing themselves as a self-styled “expert” has stirred up debate. The poster’s claim — that people whose only edge over anyone else is “having obeyed the law” end up bashing criminals and badly-behaved celebrities as a way of compensating for their own inferiority complex — struck a chord with some (“that hit me hard”), while others dismissed it as “just a delusional prose-poem thread” or “pure labeling.” The discussion gradually broadened into whether criminal-bashing can be justified as a form of maintaining public order or social punishment, and into a comparison of which is worse: bashing driven by righteous indignation, or bashing done purely for profit.

Isn't bashing criminals a good thing since it contributes to public order?

Why do you think it's allowed to plaster a criminal's face and personal info all over the news without their consent?
    That's what's called social punishment.
The public beats criminals down and tanks their social standing.
That's effectively baked into the punishment itself, and the justice system tolerates it.

In other words, the justice system believes "order is maintained by the public bashing criminals."
So doesn't that mean we, by contributing to that, are the ones keeping order?

But spending your own unpaid life "maintaining public order" (lol) is just laughable

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The opening phrase “a certain expert” isn’t an actual professional’s view — it’s a stock phrase commonly seen on 5ch’s “Anything Goes Live” board, used by anonymous posters to lend an air of authority to their own pet theories. This shouldn’t be mistaken for a factual claim. The thread split mainly along two lines of debate. The first concerns motive: is bashing criminals a legitimate act of social punishment effectively baked into the justice system, or is it merely an inferiority complex turned outward? The second is a comparative debate over which is worse — bashing driven by righteous indignation, or bashing done for profit (e.g., to farm clicks) — with some citing the harsher sentencing for occupational embezzlement to argue that profit-driven bashing is the more sinful of the two. The thread also drew distinctions between criticizing criminals versus etiquette violators, and between critiquing work versus attacking individuals personally, showing that this doesn’t reduce to a simple “is bashing good or bad” question.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Anything Goes Live) thread “Self-proclaimed expert: “Bashing criminals is where life’s failures end up” → 60,000 replies“.

  • Headwinds Hit the Pachinko Industry — 5ch: ‘Half the Shops Near Me Have Closed’

A thread titled “The Pachinko Industry Is Facing Its Real, No-Joke End…” went up on 5ch’s “Anything Goes Live” (なんでも実況G) board, sparking a wide-ranging debate about the industry’s future. Some posters explained that the prize-exchange system (the so-called “three-shop method”) is perfectly legal, while others reported that half the parlors in their neighborhood have shut down — and still others said none near them have closed at all, revealing a huge gap in people’s day-to-day experience. There were also comments pointing out that shrinking player numbers mean less tax revenue from the industry, plus plenty of grumbling that the increasingly complicated effects after a “right-strike” bonus have made it impossible to just zone out and play.

They're just impatient brats (lit. 'total pachinko kids')
    they can't stand any downtime

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Cashing out prizes at pachinko parlors relies on a long-standing business custom called the “three-shop method,” which splits the parlor, the prize-exchange counter, and the wholesale buyer into separate companies so the whole setup doesn’t count as gambling. That’s the system posters in the thread are referring to when they say “the three-point method is legal.” The industry is widely described as facing an ongoing decline in the number of players, and some posts pointed to the resulting drop in tax revenue the industry generates. Meanwhile, opinions on how many local shops have closed were split — some said “half of them are gone,” others said “not a single one near me has closed” — showing just how much the experience varies by area. That’s likely because how quickly parlors get weeded out differs a lot depending on location. Complaints like “it’s become too complicated with the focus on right-strike play” and “you can’t just zone out and play anymore” also seem to trace back to spec changes driven by regulatory revisions to the machines, though the thread doesn’t get into the details of those regulations. Readers unfamiliar with how the prize-exchange system actually works, or with the history of these rule changes, may come away thinking the industry’s outlook is uniformly bleak — but in reality, the picture varies sharply from shop to shop.

  • Rice Bought on Mercari Turns Discolored — Users Warn “Never Buy Food on Flea-Market Apps”

A post went up on 5channel’s “Nandemo Jikkyou G” (Live/Sports Chat) board claiming that rice ordered through Mercari arrived discolored. Rice prices have kept climbing in recent years, pushing more people to hunt for cheaper deals on flea-market apps — but many sellers on these platforms are private individuals with no food-safety permits, meaning buyers have no way of knowing how the rice was stored or when it was milled. The thread filled up with comments like “buying food on Mercari is scary” and “just buy it at the supermarket,” while others drew a line, saying “canned goods or instant noodles are fine.” Opinions split over just how much food-buying on flea-market apps people are willing to tolerate.

Honestly, that's close to a bad pull on the country gacha too.

    Background and Points of Debate

Flea-market apps like Mercari run on person-to-person (C2C) transactions, which is a key difference from online retailers or physical stores: sellers aren’t required to hold a food sanitation permit or verify their identity. Rising rice prices in recent years have pushed more people to hunt for deals on flea-market apps, but the risk of buying rice with an unknown milling date or storage history has long been flagged as a concern. The thread split between those who see buying food through person-to-person deals as inherently risky, and those who argued that sealed, brand-name items like canned goods or dry foods are fine — showing that where people draw the line varies from person to person. The phrase “no complaints, no returns,” commonly used in listings, tends to be cited by sellers as grounds for refusing return requests, but it doesn’t actually guarantee the food is safe. What’s easy to overlook when buying food on a flea-market app is that there’s no quality assurance from the platform itself — it’s strictly a deal between individuals.

  • Yen Hits 140s Against the Dollar—5ch Users Can’t Agree on What Counts as “Fair”

On September 9, 2026, after the yen slid into the 140s against the dollar in foreign exchange trading, a breaking-news thread went up on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (Live Commentary) board. Posters piled in with wildly opposing wishes—”still not weak enough, let it break past 120,” “hurry up and bring it back to 100–110″—and opinions on the “right” exchange rate ended up scattered anywhere from the 100s to the 300s. The thread laid bare the gap between investors welcoming the weak yen and everyday people who hate rising prices, with talk of familiar price hikes—like Bireley’s soft drinks going up—mixed into the debate.

    Re: #107
    Don't worry about it.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

This thread sprang up after the yen slid into the 140s against the dollar, with 5ch users each weighing in on where the “right” exchange rate should actually sit. The fact that opinions scattered anywhere from the 100–110 range to 180–300 is itself evidence that there’s no clear “correct answer” for either a weak or a strong yen. Exporters and people holding stocks or other investment assets tend to welcome a weak yen, while everyday consumers who feel the pinch from pricier imports, overseas travel, and daily goods tend to want a stronger one. One comment in the thread—that prices raised during a weak-yen period don’t come back down once the yen strengthens—points to something that’s easy to overlook when thinking about the relationship between exchange rates and prices, and shows that the simple “weak yen bad, strong yen good” framing doesn’t fully capture reality. As a side note, the exchange about “360 yen” was a joke referencing the fixed-rate era that lasted until 1971—worth noting that Japan operates under a completely different, floating-rate system today.

  • 58-Year-Old Shows Up on NanG, Sparking Debate That 50s-60s Are Now the ‘Core Crowd’

A poster claiming to be 58 years old appeared on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (nanG) board, prompting replies like “That’s the same age as my son!” and “Grandpa!” The thread then went off on a tangent, evolving into a debate about age demographics — with users speculating that nanG, once thought to be dominated by people in their 20s and 30s, might actually have people in their 50s and 60s as its “core demographic” now. The discussion expanded to cover where the generation that remembers nanJ’s 2000s heyday has ended up, and even veered into retirement talk about what age to start collecting a pension — turning a throwaway joke thread into residents self-deprecatingly mocking their own aging population.

Can someone do something about the guys who scream "geezer, geezer" every time a thread pops up that they don't understand? It's obnoxious

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Nandemo Jikkyo G (nanG) is a board that split off from Nandemo Jikkyo J (nanJ) in the 2010s. NanJ itself is known for its mid-2000s golden age, marked by major flame wars like the Shunichi Karasawa scandal. If the core users from that era are now roughly in their 40s, the claim floated in this thread — that nanG’s core demographic is now people in their 50s and 60s — sounds exaggerated at first glance, but it’s entirely plausible that longtime users simply stuck around and aged along with the board. That said, the age makeup of an anonymous message board is really just self-reported impressions, not hard data. Figures tossed around in the thread — like “there are three times as many 60-somethings as 20-somethings” or “Japan’s average age is 51” — are unsourced, off-the-cuff numbers, not actual demographic evidence. Readers should enjoy this as self-deprecating humor about an old-school anonymous board’s aging user base, rather than take it as a verified breakdown of who’s actually posting there.

  • Suica’s New Mascot Candidate Is Purple — 5ch: ‘Once You Get Used to It, Purple Wins by a Mile’

JR’s transit IC card “Suica” is reportedly set to get a new mascot character, and a strikingly purple candidate design among the contenders has become a hot topic on 5ch. In the thread, users shared information suggesting that the long-familiar penguin character can no longer be used due to complicated rights issues involving the designer and an advertising agency. Discussion ranged over whether the new candidate’s look was any good, with some arguing that a divisive design — like “Myaku-Myaku,” the mascot of the Osaka-Kansai Expo — might actually attract more attention. Although the new mascot is supposedly being chosen by public vote, some posters expressed distrust in the outcome, pointing to the precedent of the Takanawa Gateway Station naming vote, where the result was ultimately overturned.

    Yeah, this is done for.
    2AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:26
    It's a gross vibe, but
I don't think the design itself is that bad.
    3AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:27
    That'd be fine
Going with Option A would be the worst outcome.
    4AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:28
Did the Takanawa Gateway Station name end up matching the vote?
    6AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:29
    Just bring back the penguin.
    8AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:29
    Re: #6
Apparently the rights are a mess because of the designer, Dentsu, and other parties being involved.

    Re: #8
So it's JR East's fault, huh?
    9AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:29
They should've made it even creepier, this isn't bold enough
Bring something on par with or worse than Myaku-Myaku.
    11AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:31
    Color-wise it's the best option
Brown wouldn't match the green card.
    12AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:32
Would a plain watermelon 🍉 picture not work?
    13AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:33
None of them fit the stylish Kanto image.
    14AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:33
    Wait, that was a penguin?
I thought it was a Black man.
    15AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:34
This isn't even trolling, purple is just genuinely the only choice.
    17AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:35
I hate that they're trying to repeat the same move that got the creepiest option, Myaku-Myaku, picked last time.
    18AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:35
I think something creepy would land better than Option A's bland nothingness.
    24AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:38
Could they still switch to this one even now?

    36AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:47
    Re: #24
The annoying part is that this is honestly better.
    28AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:40
They should just buy the rights for enough money to set the designer up for life
Given how much exposure and name recognition it's gotten, they could easily pay a few hundred million yen.
    73AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:16
    Re: #28
    There are three rights holders
    JR East
    The designer
    Dentsu ← probably the culprit
    31AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:44
Myaku-Myaku was a success, so that approach must be the right one.
    74AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:16
    Re: #31
Reminder: it wasn't actually a success.

You've already got 2 versions of your own
    don't make this more confusing.
    50AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:04
Fewer places even take Suica these days anyway, so Suica itself is probably going away.
    51AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:04
ICOCA's better, right? (JR West's equivalent IC card)
    60AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:09
Option A looks so generic it's like it was pulled from stock clip art
the kind of thing you'd see tucked into a corner of an elementary school bulletin board.

    Isn't it this one?

Who came up with these? All three of them are no-gos.
    76AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:17
Now that I'm used to it, purple looks the cutest
and I was Team C.A. just a minute ago.
    80AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:18
    Re: #76
    Right?
Once you get used to it, purple wins by a landslide.
    82AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:19
I always think this, but there's no need to change something that's already established.
    86AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:20
    Re: #82
Probably Dentsu kicking up a fuss is the cause.
    84AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:19
After looking at them all day, the tiger and koala just don't do it for me
why not just go with a monster?
    85AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:20
    Re: #84
Where's there a tiger in this?
    89AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:23
Is there even a need to change the character?
    90AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:27
    Re: #89

Something about it being a picture-book character whose rights expired.
    97AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:40
    Re: #90
It's not that the rights expired
they're planning to expand the character into all sorts of things going forward
and apparently it's a hassle unless JR East holds it solo
the hassle is probably Dentsu, though.
    91AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:27
That illustration of 'Poison Suika-chan' (a fan pun on Suica/watermelon — they're near-homophones in Japanese) cosplaying as a train conductor is super cute.

I bet she'd transform if she put on a poison-bunny outfit.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The costumed penguin known as Suica’s current mascot is reportedly copyrighted not by JR East but by an outside illustrator, and needing to coordinate with rights holders when developing corporate characters is not an unusual constraint in transit IC card branding. It’s worth noting that the recurring claim in the thread that “Dentsu is the cause” is speculation from posters, not officially confirmed information. Opinions were split over direction: whether the new mascot’s look should be a divisive design like “Myaku-Myaku,” the Osaka-Kansai Expo mascot, or should stay safe and in line with Suica’s stylish brand image. Posters also voiced distrust that the vote for the new mascot might end up being just for show, citing the precedent of the Takanawa Gateway Station naming process, where the vote result wasn’t ultimately reflected.
