  • Yuki Uchida (50) Stuns Fans With Her Youthful Looks — 5ch: ‘She Looks 29, Tops’

A thread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board lit up over the news that actress Yuki Uchida had turned 50. Commenters who saw the posted photos were floored, with reactions like “She looks 29, tops” and “Is it even allowed for a 50-year-old to be this cute?” The discussion soon spread to her relationship with her husband, actor Takashi Kashiwabara, comparisons with fellow celebrities born in 1975 like Ryoko Yonekura, Michiko Kichise, and Vivian Hsu, and eventually a broader look back at the shifting eras of idol history — from Yuki Uchida to Ryoko Hirosue, and on to Morning Musume and SPEED.

These days they'd just airbrush out every wrinkle on the armpits, waist, and stomach anyway.

    Background and Talking Points

Yuki Uchida, born in 1975, was one of the defining actresses and idols of the 1990s. She married actor Takashi Kashiwabara in 2001, and commenters spent plenty of time discussing their marriage. This round of photo comparisons picked up steam partly because several other female celebrities also born in 1975 are hitting 50 around the same time — though it’s worth noting that these “youthfulness” comparisons don’t really account for differences in photo editing or shooting conditions. The later discussion about the idol lineage moving from “Uchida Yuki to Hirosue Ryoko” and then into the group-idol era also tracks with the real history of the industry, as SPEED and Morning Musume rose to prominence in the late 1990s — so it’s more than just nostalgic chatter.

  • “Singles Have More Fun” Debate Splits Opinion, Exposes Rift With Married Folks

A thread on the Nandemo Jikkyou G (livegalileo) board split into opposing camps over a middle-aged single man’s claim that “being single is more fun.” Some mocked the poster, saying he’s “just rock bottom himself and trying to drag everyone else down to his level,” while several married posters admitted they envied singles who “can enjoy hobbies and days off without worrying about anyone else.” Others pushed back, arguing “that’s not something you’d trade a wife and kids for,” and warned that “being single leaves you screwed when you get sick or grow old.” The debate over what counts as happiness — and who’s really jealous of whom — never converged.

    1AnonymousSep 9, 2026 11:59
    He's rock bottom himself,
so he's going "everyone's happier living alone!"
just to drag the rest of us down to his level.
    4AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:02
The opposite reading fits better, honestly.
You've been making these threads for years out of a wish that if you're not having fun, other singles shouldn't be either.
There are plenty of older single guys out there — divorced or whatever — who aren't crazy at all. Probably even your own boss.

Whether someone's surprising or not isn't decided by their marital status alone — you might not even know their hobbies, job, or circumstances.

    Re: #129
    It doesn't, actually?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

This “singles vs. marrieds” argument is a recurring staple on 5ch, and as one poster in the thread pointed out, “threads trashing singles get made all the time, but threads praising singles never do” — a pattern where people tend to justify their own life choices by putting down the other side. Married posters voiced envy of singles who “can move freely without worrying about hobbies or days off,” while single posters shot back that “no married person would actually ditch their wife and kids to go back to being single” — each side, in effect, projecting envy onto whatever they themselves gave up. The worry that “singles have no one to rely on when they get sick or grow old” is a common talking point about life planning, but it’s easy to overlook that marriage is no guarantee of security either — plenty of people end up single again through divorce or the death of a spouse.

  • Middle schoolers don’t know BUMP OF CHICKEN — 5ch: “The times just keep sliding along”

A post about watching a middle-school girl’s voice-and-guitar livestream and being shocked she’d never heard of BUMP OF CHICKEN kicked off a discussion about generational gaps in music taste on 5ch’s Live News board (Nanademo Jikkyou G). Posters piled on with more examples: 2000s kids who never heard of BOØWY or Rebecca, middle schoolers who call Kenshi Yonezu and King Gnu their “childhood songs.” Some pointed out that the way older posters see Shogo Hamada and Koji Tamaki as “artists from way back” is exactly how today’s high schoolers now see BUMP, RADWIMPS, and Orange Range. Meanwhile, plenty pushed back against the generalization that “middle-aged guys can’t get into music by younger artists,” so opinions ended up split.

    Honestly, that’s shocking.

Spitz has a big point in its favor — their recent Conan theme song "Utsukushii Hire" (Beautiful Fin) was a hit. "Cherry" still gets sung all the time, and I think "Sora mo Toberu Hazu" (I Should Be Able to Fly Too) is still in school textbooks.

Wait, 2014–2023, when I was just a normal guy in my 20s, counts as ancient history to today's middle schoolers? So my own middle school days must be actual history to kids now.

Back in 2005, when I was in middle school, Orange Range and stuff were huge. But something 20 years old at the time, like Bass–Kakefu–Okada (the legendary Hanshin Tigers batting lineup), felt like ancient history, and even Evangelion at 10 years old already had that "old-school otaku" image.

Thinking about it that way, something 20 years old now, like "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya," must be a classic to kids today, and even something from just 10 years ago (was there anything big then?) probably feels like the distant past to them.

Honestly the only young female artist I listen to is Aimyon anyway — and when I looked it up, she's 31, so there's only a 3-year gap between us.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

So-called “Rockin’on-style” bands like BUMP OF CHICKEN, Mr. Children, and ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION won over young listeners from the 2000s through the early 2010s, but the artists middle schoolers actually listen to now — My Hair is Bad, Creephyp, Back Number, Macaroni Enpitsu — belong to the streaming generation, and this generational split kept coming up throughout the thread. What divided opinion was just how fast a sense of “dated-ness” sets in: many were startled by the observation that even “Your Name.,” only ten years old, already counts as a classic to today’s young people. Posters also contrasted artists like Spitz and Southern All Stars, whose songs are still sung today, with ones like Noriyuki Makihara, who had hits at the time but haven’t held up as well for later generations. Worth noting: the claim that “middle-aged men can’t get into music by younger artists” was just one poster’s personal theory, not something the whole thread agreed on — an easy point to misread.

  • A bathhouse that used to allow tattooed customers now bans them over ‘declining clientele’ — 5ch: ‘You can’t trust people’s good nature anymore’

A story about a public bathhouse (sento) that had previously allowed tattooed customers to enter, but has now changed its policy to ban them, citing a decline in the quality of its clientele, became a hot topic on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board. In the thread, the defense that “tattoos are normal overseas” was met with the counterargument that “overseas, tattoos are also a sign of gangsters and delinquents,” while opinions differed over people’s motives for getting tattoos, and several posters shared firsthand accounts that seeing tattooed customers at their local bathhouse isn’t actually unusual at all — opinions were split. Since public bathhouses are generally not allowed to refuse entry to bathers, many commenters expressed a mix of sympathy and irony that the establishment’s past tolerance had backfired.

    Re: #110
Same at the little local bathhouse near me.
Every single time I go, there are always 2-3 people with tattoos.
You don't see that many tattooed people in everyday life, so it makes you wonder just how many of them are actually out there in the world.

Background and key points of this topic

Public bathhouses (sento) operate under permits granted through the Public Bathhouse Act, and as a rule they are not permitted to refuse bathers entry without a legitimate reason. Because of this, some sento have continued to accept tattooed customers — but this particular case became a topic of discussion because that policy was reversed, with the establishment citing a decline in clientele quality. The thread was split between those who view tattoos as a form of personal expression or as normal in foreign cultures, and those who see them as a red flag for security risk, with opinions also diverging over people’s motives for getting tattooed. At the same time, several people shared firsthand accounts that tattooed customers are already nothing unusual at small local bathhouses, suggesting that the reality varies significantly depending on a facility’s location and clientele. It’s worth keeping in mind while reading that this single incident doesn’t allow for a blanket judgment about the conduct of tattooed customers as a whole. In fact, some replies pointed out the difference in business permits between a “sento” (public bathhouse) and a “super sento” (spa-style bathhouse), highlighting that how tattoos are handled can depend on the type of facility.

  • Trouble Brews on the Hello! Project Chat Board ‘Ōkami’: Angerme’s Slump Leaves Juice=Juice Threads Dead Quiet

On the 5ch board “Morning Coffee,” where Hello! Project fans gather and which is commonly known as “Ōkami” (Wolf), posters were discussing the recent state of the board. One user pointed out that the Juice=Juice thread barely gets any posts these days, and that chat threads and “OG threads” (nostalgic threads about retired or graduated members) have been popping up in its place. Many commenters blamed this on the stagnation of Hello! Project’s flagship groups—Morning Musume, Angerme, and Tsubaki Factory—with Angerme’s slump in particular singled out as having drained momentum from the whole board. Some posts expressed worry about the board’s future, and a running, nitpicky argument continued over just how “lively” a thread really needs to be.

Seriously, this. Ōkami's long history is ending. If the old S/mileage-turned-Angerme fans really disappear for good, it's truly over.

    Background and Key Points

The “Morning Coffee” board on 5ch, where threads about Hello! Project are posted, has long been known among longtime fans by the nickname “Ōkami” (Wolf). Within the thread, one poster claimed that threads about former members, which had been thriving as recently as a month ago, suddenly cooled off following an “AI buzz” incident—but this is just one poster’s personal take, and the facts behind it can’t be confirmed. The main point of discussion was a shift in feel: chat threads and “OG threads” (about graduated members) seem to be gaining more traction than threads for active groups like Juice=Juice, with posters divided over whether to read this as a sign of the groups’ fading popularity or just a natural shift in what’s trending. There was also pushback over the term “reisho-kei” (cynic-core), pointing to a lack of self-awareness about the board’s own peculiar slang—an exchange that hinted at just how insular the board can look from the outside.

※This article is an excerpt and summary based on the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “What’s Ōkami mainly about discussing these days?“

  • His Only Hobby Is Watching ‘Yuyake Nyan Nyan’ — 5ch: ‘Yu-Nyan Is My Life’

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board blew up after a poster showed up whose only hobby is watching the 1980s Fuji TV show “Yuyake Nyan Nyan” — and got grilled with questions. The show ran for two and a half years, but the poster said, “I died on August 31, ’87, and then again at the finale on September 20 — ever since, I’ve just been an empty shell,” revealing they haven’t gotten into anything else since the finale. They said they still support Onyanko Club member “Yuyu” to this day, and replies kept coming asking about her age back then, for images, and for other background info. The thread lit up with debate over the merits of such devotion, alongside plenty of nostalgic reminiscing.

"Nyan nyan" was slang for sex

    Background and talking points

“Yuyake Nyan Nyan” aired in Fuji TV’s early-evening slot from 1985 to 1987, and is known as the show that launched Onyanko Club — born out of an amateur-audition segment — into overnight stardom, laying the groundwork for the idol boom that followed. As the thread itself notes, the show’s suggestive title and content drew criticism from PTA groups at the time. The main point of debate in this thread was whether to see the poster’s continued devotion to one member, some 40 years after the show ended, as “admirable” or “a bit much” — and the poster themselves noted that the spread of video streaming services has made it easier to preserve and rewatch old footage, which they credited as part of why the obsession has lasted.

  • Juice=Juice Fans Keep Announcing Themselves in Other Groups’ Comment Sections — 5ch: “We’re Juice=Juice Family!” (smug face)

On the Hello!Project board, a discussion took off about how Juice=Juice fans tend to identify themselves as “Juice otaku” even in videos and on social media that have nothing to do with their own group. Some in the thread pointed out that fans of popular groups greeting and helping each other out at events by naming their group is a longstanding idol-fandom custom, while others suggested it might be tied to Juice=Juice’s growing activity outside Hello!Project in recent years. As the thread went on, it turned into a broader argument about the gap between “new” fans who flowed in through social media and longtime fans who’ve followed Hello!Project for years.

Unlike the Juice otaku over on "Wolf" (a rival Hello!Project fan board) or X, these ones are actually decent.
    3AnonymousSep 9, 2026 06:18
It's a common thing among popular idols — leaving comments like "I'm a fan of X, but I came to cheer for Y" as a way of supporting each other.
Juice=Juice's already made it out into the wider world, so that habit just spread from there.

(laughs). Not that many people know this, but—

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Hello!Project has a culture where multiple groups share the same big venues, so fans naturally cross paths at events and on social media. Fans of popular groups leaving comments naming their own group under other fans’ posts is described in the thread as a longstanding, mutually-promotional custom within the idol fandom. That said, the real focus of the debate isn’t an evaluation of Juice=Juice itself — it centers on the temperature gap between “new” fans who recently flowed in via social media and longtime fans who’ve followed Hello!Project for years, making it more a reflection of generational friction within the fandom than a comment on the group’s popularity. As symbolized by the remark about “Hello!Project’s 29-year history,” this kind of old-guard-versus-newcomer debate is a recurring staple of Hello!Project threads.

  • Insomniac 5ch Users Shoot the Breeze All Night — 5ch Asks: ‘What Even Is an “Inkya” (Introverted Loser)?’

In the early hours of September 9, 2026, a thread titled “Talk to a sleepless, bottom-tier inkya” popped up on 5channel’s Newsspeed VIP board. The original poster vowed to reply to nearly every single post, and the conversation rambled on with no particular direction — coffee, udon noodles, what lies beyond the Milky Way, and stories of losing weight from being sick — continuing almost until dawn. Along the way, posters swapped stories like hallucinating in the hospital after a sleep-medication adjustment, and even debated what “inkya” actually means, turning a simple insomnia gripe session into a sprawling, freewheeling thread.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“All-reply” style VIP threads pop up frequently around the time the date changes, and their defining trait is that they aren’t necessarily tied to any specific newsworthy event — they’re simply self-contained chit-chat among whoever happens to be in the thread. This one was no exception, with folk wisdom of dubious scientific backing flying around, like “drinking coffee makes it even harder to sleep” or “a light snack causes a blood sugar spike that makes you drowsy” — none of which is guaranteed to actually work. As for the definition of “inkya,” the “active inkya / passive inkya” split proposed in post 169 is strictly one poster’s personal opinion, not an established definition shared across 5ch or the VIP board as a whole. The thread also touched on one poster’s experience adjusting sleep medication during a hospital stay, but specifics about medication and dosage vary enormously by individual and shouldn’t be generalized into medical advice.

  • Onsen Lifts Tattoo Ban, Reverses Course After Just One Month — 5ch: ‘Just Ban the Ones Who Actually Misbehave’

A hot spring facility that had lifted its tattoo ban — charging tattooed customers an extra 100 yen to bathe — reportedly reversed the policy just one month after starting it, sparking discussion on 5ch’s Newssoku VIP board. Trouble reportedly included damaged facilities and customers smoking without permission, and the thread split sharply between those who argued “just ban the individual customers who caused trouble” and those sympathetic to the facility, arguing “there’s no way 100 yen covers the cost of hiring someone to monitor them.” Opinions also diverged over whether the 100-yen surcharge was set at a reasonable level, and whether it’s fair to lump yakuza in with people who just have fashion tattoos.

    Re: #144
The truly badly-behaved ones probably ignore both the fee and the sign-up sheet anyway.
A membership system is the only way to actually screen them out.

    Background and points of debate

Japan’s widespread “no tattoos” rule at public bathhouses is generally traced back to the 2000s, when anti-organized-crime ordinances spread and treating tattoos as a marker of gang affiliation became standard practice. In recent years, partly driven by a rise in foreign tourists, some facilities have started easing the rule — allowing cover-up stickers or restricting tattooed guests to private baths — and this hot spring appears to have been one of those testing a wider opening, in this case via a surcharge. The thread split between the view that facilities should simply eject individual troublemakers, and the view that, given limited staff, handling things case-by-case isn’t cost-effective — with the adequacy of the 100-yen surcharge itself also up for debate. It’s worth noting, though, that how many tattooed customers actually visited and what exactly happened remains secondhand information circulating within the thread; no official explanation from the facility has been presented.

Some pointed to realistic graphics and tall character proportions, Hironobu Sakaguchi’s scenarios paired with Nobuo Uematsu’s music, and the series’ tradition of overhauling its systems with every entry — while opinions split over how to place divisive titles like FF8, FF9, and FF13 within that identity. The discussion widened further with comparisons to the Tales series, mentions of Kingdom Hearts’ distinctive world-building, and eventually criticism of the franchise’s “host-club-style” character designs.

    What even is it?
    6AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:24
More like the realistic art style — or rather, characters with realistic body proportions.

Couldn't get into the designs in Theatrhythm
Pixel art would've been just fine
    30AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:33
Isn't it true that FF games have no connection to each other except for characters like Gilgamesh who can cross dimensions?

    Re: #30
I'm pretty sure FF Tactics and FF12 are technically set in the same world
The era treated as an ultra-advanced ancient magical civilization in Tactics is the era FF12 takes place in
    31AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:33
Sakaguchi's scenarios, world-building, and atmosphere, plus Uematsu's music
And introducing a brand-new system every single time

    Re: #31
In the end that tradition stopped after 11, didn't it…

[Good news] Lost Odyssey basically was FF
    35AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:36
Playing FF4 right now and I cracked up because literally everyone's still alive

    Re: #35
In the original almost everyone dies
There's even Yang's kitchen knife left behind as a keepsake
    38AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:40
Square Enix, just let 'Beard' (fan nickname for series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi) handle an FF one more time
    39AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:41
Everyone seems to hate it, but I really love FF8's world-building —
but I guess to people who've played a lot of the series, that game has zero 'FF-ness'?
    122AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:41
    Re: #39
In a way, it's the most 'FF' game there is, since it shattered the expectations of longtime fans and JRPG conventions alike
    42AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:43
    I actually like 13
Especially the music — I still listen to the soundtrack on repeat to this day

The regular trash-mob battles were so garbage I dropped it halfway through

    Sunleth Waterscape was great though

Handsome guys and beautiful women travel together and end up saving the world, right?

    Re: #60
I thought that was a description of Ainori (a Japanese reality dating show where a group travels together in search of love)
    65AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:56
So then, what actually makes something feel like a Tales game?
    71AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:58
    Re: #65
The type of RPG where you travel with your buddies and somehow end up saving the world before you know it
    72AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:58
    Re: #71
Whoa, hold on, you're really gonna say that?
    75AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:59
    Re: #71
Huh. I don't really think that's it, though
    85AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:04
Tales hasn't lost its fanbase, so it'll probably overtake FF as the No. 1 JRPG before long

Though before that happens, some brand-new series that blows up could end up becoming the face of the Reiwa era — but there's no sign of any new JRPG IP showing up at all
    86AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:05
    Re: #85
Not gonna happen, the fanbase numbers just aren't there…
    92AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:08
Feels like Tales can only keep rehashing isekai-reincarnation-style character designs and stories from here on — they've used up everything else

They'd need something like a middle-aged, English-speaking lesbian protagonist to actually shake things up
    94AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:09
    Re: #92
Running out of fresh ideas happens to every series
That's exactly why Tales, which just keeps giving fans what they love, comes out on top
    97AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:10
Kingdom Hearts is also to thank for everything turning into a parade of pretty-boy 'host club' types
    99AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:12
    Re: #97
Honestly, I feel bad for kids overseas
They start out thrilled like 'Wait, I get to go on an adventure with Donald and Goofy!?'
and then suddenly it's all talk of 'light' and 'darkness,' until finally a bunch of mysterious spiky-haired guys in black hoods start floating around in midair
    they must've been legitimately terrified
    103AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:16
Ever since 7, except for 9, all that shows up is host-club guys and hostess-club girls
    105AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:18
    Re: #103
If anything, 12 got criticized precisely because it *wasn't* full of host/hostess types
    107AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:21
    Re: #103
Isn't 9 basically just a puppet show of a guy wooing a girl like a host would?
    111AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:27
    Re: #103
    9 isn't even FF
    It's a shoujo manga
    123AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:44
Can FF seriously only make host-club-looking characters anymore?
Couldn't they do something good based on General Leo from FF6?
    129AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:52
    Re: #123
    That's why I keep saying: remake 2 in high-res.
    FF2's serious world-building,
    a handsome lead like Firion,
and a story built around the beautiful Maria

That's exactly the perfect source material for today's graphics-obsessed FF
    128AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:51
Is there anything the series actually has in common besides Amano's artwork?
    133AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:54
    Re: #128
    Fantasy plus advanced science
    Low-stress system UI
    Deep post-game content
    Sound effects and music
    and so on
    131AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:53
Lean into nostalgia and it's 'too old-fashioned,' make it feel fresh and it's 'this isn't it'
So what exactly do you people want!?
Square Enix is at a loss too, lol
Honestly, you're the reason it keeps losing its way in the first place
    134AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:54
    Re: #131
Seeing FF16's graphics confirmed it for me

    Make an FF2 remake
    136AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:57
Even though it's a numbered mainline entry, I think they should develop it like a brand-new IP that just borrows a shared vocabulary — spell names, crystals, summons, that sort of thing
    138AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:58
    Re: #136
That's literally what they've always done

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The Final Fantasy series has been running for nearly 40 years since the original debuted in 1987, and both Hironobu Sakaguchi (the series’ creator) and Nobuo Uematsu (its early composer) have since left Square Enix. The thread’s disagreement broke down into two main points: first, a divide between those who prioritize “realistic graphics and proportions” and those who prioritize “the challenge of overhauling the system with every entry,” and second, differing views on whether to treat divisive entries like FF8 and FF9 as part of the series’ mainstream identity. Worth noting, though not mentioned in the original thread, is that the claim that FF Tactics and FF12 share the same world isn’t mere speculation — it’s an officially confirmed setting known as the “Ivalice Alliance.” Also easy to misread: the comparisons to the Tales series are being used to gauge FF’s position within the broader JRPG genre, not to declare one series definitively better than the other.
