  • Bipolar Part-Timer Woman Keeps Getting Rejected From Every Job She Applies To — 5ch: “Every Job Near Me Turned Me Down”

A thread appeared on 5channel’s Newsspeed VIP board started by a poster working as a part-timer while living with bipolar disorder, sharing an update on their situation. After revealing they hadn’t managed to go pick up their paycheck and had been rejected from one part-time job after another, other posters who also live with mental illness or hold a disability certificate gathered to discuss how hard it is to hold down a job. Differences emerged among posters over things like whether they had an official diagnosis document or how severe their symptoms were, making for a thread that mixed humor with an undercurrent of just how tough daily life can be.

Tomorrow, for sure, I'm going to my job at noon and picking up my paycheck…
    3AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:16
How many yen ago was this paycheck? Hasn't the statute of limitations run out already? Want me to hook you up with a good lawyer?
    5AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:17
    Re: #3
What's that supposed to mean? The average monthly pay here is about 130,000 yen. When I'm in a manic phase I make way more than that.

My parents tell every boyfriend I bring home, 'Dating this kid is gonna be rough, you know~' I'm also borderline developmental disorder (an undiagnosed "gray zone" case). But hey, even guys with mental illness can land a girlfriend — I guarantee it, since a few of my exes were exactly that.

Oh really? Yeah, I've been rejected from a few part-time jobs myself. Even the job I have now felt like I only got in because the interview vibe happened to click.

I'm not gorgeous. It feels more like they hired me because they're short-staffed — even now they're hiring literally everyone who shows up for an interview. I actually applied to a dentist's office known for hiring on looks, and got flat-out rejected.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness marked by alternating manic episodes, where mood swings upward, and depressive episodes, where it crashes down, and because the symptom swings can be so extreme, it’s said to make holding down steady work difficult. In the thread, discussion turned to how the support and pension benefits available can differ depending on whether someone holds a disability certificate or a formal diagnosis document, and it became clear that even among posters sharing the same mental illness, there was a wide range in symptom severity and how far along they were in getting back into working life. Several posters also described being rejected from part-time jobs over and over despite the constant talk of a “labor shortage,” suggesting employers may be cautious about hiring due to concerns over shift stability and the risk of absences. Bipolar disorder tends to get lumped in with the image of plain “depression,” but it’s worth noting that it also involves manic episodes, which sets it apart from — and makes it easy to confuse with — straightforward depression.

  • Tokyo Is No Longer a Place Where Regular Salarymen Can Live

On 5ch’s live-discussion board “Nandemo Jikkyo G,” a post claiming that rent in Tokyo’s 23 wards has become more than double the price of comparable properties in Osaka went viral, arguing that “Tokyo is no longer a place where a regular salaryman can afford to live.” Commenters noted that while starting salaries for new graduates have risen to around ¥300,000 a month, that’s nowhere near enough to keep up with home prices, and many recommended moving out to Saitama or the Tama area instead. Opinion was also split on whether a car-dependent regional lifestyle or a train-based city lifestyle is more comfortable, expanding the discussion beyond housing costs into differences in lifestyle itself.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Prices for new and resale condos in Tokyo have kept climbing in recent years, driven by low interest rate policy, rising construction costs, and an inflow of overseas investment money, so the sense that rents in the 23 wards run several times higher than in regional cities isn’t purely exaggeration. That said, figures thrown around in the thread — like needing an annual income of ¥30 million just to live there — are impressionistic exaggerations and shouldn’t be confused with actual average household income or mortgage lending criteria. What really divided the discussion wasn’t the high rent itself but where to draw the line on what counts as “Tokyo” — assessments of livability shifted dramatically depending on whether the Tama area, Saitama, and Kanagawa were included. On top of that, differing habits around getting around by car versus on foot or by train also highlighted the gap in mindset between city and countryside living.

  • Man Makes It Home ‘Just Barely in Time’ Through Torrential Rain, Sweats Every Flooded Road Along the Way

On the night of September 8, a thread titled “The boy who made it home safe” went up on 5channel’s News VIP board. In it, longtime tripcode-verified regular Kasa no Bon reported that he and his beloved car had made it home safely after driving through heavy rain. Chat ranged over how flooded the roads were, the correct way to apply the windshield water-repellent coating “Glaco,” and concern for the weather on the remote island of Himakajima — but at one point a rumor spread that he’d been “swept away by the floodwater,” which he personally had to deny.

    Background and Talking Points

Heavy rain hit many parts of Japan that day, and 5ch’s VIP board saw a wave of posts fretting over flooded roads and rising water. The thread’s original poster, Kasa no Bon, is a long-known tripcode-verified regular who has apparently had a “submerged in floodwater” thread pop up about him before — the same rumor resurfaced this time too, though he denied it himself. There’s no actual confirmation that his car or home ever flooded; this is simply an account of making it home safely through heavy rain, which is easy to misread. Commenters also noted that the water-repellent product “Glaco” needs to be applied on a clear day and left to set for a full 24 hours, since applying it right before a downpour won’t do much good — useful practical info buried in the thread. Some posters expressed concern for the weather on Himakajima island (in Aichi Prefecture), though no actual damage there is mentioned anywhere in the thread.

  • Shuto Hits Rare Inside-the-Park Grand Slam — NPB’s First in 27 Years, Only 8th Ever

In a game between the Nippon-Ham Fighters and the SoftBank Hawks, SoftBank’s Yukyo Shuto hit an inside-the-park grand slam. The ball caromed hard off the outfield fence, and when the Fighters’ outfielder failed to field it cleanly, Shuto was able to race all the way around to home plate. On 5ch, posts poured in expressing amazement at the sheer rarity of an “inside-the-park grand slam” and noting how few times it’s happened in NPB history, while others pointed to Nippon-Ham’s shallow outfield positioning and sloppy fielding as the real cause — opinions split over where to place the blame.

What an assist machine (a mocking nickname rival fans use)

    Background and Talking Points

An inside-the-park grand slam happens when the ball doesn’t clear the fence — often caroming hard off the wall — and the batter, capitalizing on a defensive miscue, circles the bases alone to score. It’s far rarer than a standard home run. As the thread notes, this is only the 8th such instance in NPB history, starting with Akira Noguchi in 1947, and the first since Hiroki Kokubo’s in 1999 — 27 years ago — which explains why it’s such an obscure, hard-to-recall event. Opinions in the thread split over the cause: some blamed Nippon-Ham’s decision to play a shallow outfield in the first place, while others zeroed in on the specific error of failing to field the carom off the wall cleanly. Shuto also had a big day overall, including a home run, which drove posts praising his combined offensive and defensive performance. That said, figures like the WAR increase mentioned in the thread are fan speculation, not official statistics, and should be read as such. Comments about Nippon-Ham’s outfield defense read as criticism of the team’s defensive setup rather than attacks on any individual player.

  • Kitagawa Rio’s Golden Week ‘girls trip with fellow batchmates’ photo goes viral — fans argue over who’s actually in it

Idol Kitagawa Rio posted a photo on social media that she said was taken during a “girls trip with fellow batchmates” (同期, dōki — people who joined/debuted the same year) over Golden Week. Since she gave no explanation of which batchmates were actually in the shot, posters on the 5ch forum threw out three names — Suzuki Serino, Homare, and Mei — and launched into a not-quite-detective hunt for the mystery companions, poring over details like the angle of an arm and a shadowy figure in the background. Opinions split between those backing her groupmates Homare and Mei, and those backing a batchmate from an entirely different field, and the thread rolled on without ever reaching a clear conclusion.

    1AnonymousSep 8, 2026 20:26
Yeah, I'm curious which "batchmate" this is too.
Given the angle, isn't it pretty clearly Homare?

    Re: #66
Are you the guy who's always starting threads about Aoi and Getter?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In the idol world, the exact line-up of “batchmates” — members who debuted or joined the same year — tends to become a hot topic every time someone posts on social media. Because batchmates often appear together, fans piecing together who’s in a photo from details like poses and half-remembered past interactions is a familiar ritual on Hello! Project-related forums. This time opinions split because posters didn’t agree on what “batchmate” even meant in this context: some backed her in-group batchmates Homare and Mei, while others backed a batchmate from an entirely different field, like Suzuki Serino. Since Kitagawa herself hasn’t clarified anything, neither side has moved past speculation. The thread also touched on friendship troubles and celebrity dating rumors, but those comments were based on individual posters’ memories or hearsay, not confirmed fact. Readers should keep in mind that the identity of the person in the photo remains unconfirmed, and the surrounding anecdotes are unverified.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Unbearably cute Kitagawa Rio-chan: “A photo taken during a girls trip with batchmates over Golden Week 📷” — which batchmate is this? Serino-chan? Homare? Mei?“.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Tsubaki Factory is an idol group under the Hello! Project umbrella, and the October 26 concert at Nippon Budokan marks member Mao Akiyama’s graduation show, “Final ‘Hanaoto’.” The rehearsal footage and promotional video that sparked discussion on the thread appear to be part of the buildup to this concert. Reactions to the word “break” were split — some enjoyed it purely for the funny facial expressions, while others voiced discomfort at what they saw as buzz-chasing staging, or worry that drew comparisons to sister group Angerme’s past image overhaul. Opinions also diverged on the origin of the phrase “anything short of death is just a scratch,” with some crediting a bestselling book and others crediting comedians like Sanma Akashiya or Degawa, leaving the true source unresolved as the conversation moved on.

Luffy’s new move “Gonmu Gonmu no Dawn Kraken Gatling,” unveiled in the latest One Piece chapter, became a hot topic on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board (a general live-discussion board). Alongside comments that the lengthy move name was “just too hard to say,” posters weighed in on the abrupt way the new technique was revealed and on the backstory behind Luffy’s power shifting from “Gomu” (rubber) to “Nika.” Some even speculated the name was modeled on Dragon Quest’s tiered spell names (Frizz → Frizzle → Kafrizz), showing the kind of engagement only a long-running series can generate—though opinions were split on the pacing of recent battle arcs.

    Background and Talking Points

As with “Gonmu Gonmu no Dawn Kraken Gatling,” One Piece’s special move names have tended to grow longer and more elaborate in recent years, and over the course of a series that now spans more than 100 collected volumes, the way Luffy’s powers are described has shifted dramatically from the original “Gomu Gomu no~” naming. The thread was split between readers who accept this as simple power-creep and those who felt something was off about the naming and pacing of these reveals—the latter group also voicing frustration that “the battles feel flat for a battle manga.” At the same time, some pointed out connections to earlier arcs, like the “homage to the Enel fight,” showing the range of ways longtime readers engage with the series. It’s worth noting that no concrete facts were presented about the author’s health or the production setup behind the scenes—the speculation in the thread remains just that, speculation.

  • Mos Burger Tastes Better Than McDonald’s — So Why Is It Struggling? 5ch Asks: ‘Aren’t the Stores Always Cramped?’

Mos Burger is sometimes said to be “tastier than McDonald’s and about the same price,” but 5ch users got into a debate over why it still isn’t pulling in more customers. The gripes raised included too few stores, long waits between ordering and getting your food, skimpy portions, and repeated price hikes. A photo showing menu prices sparked back-and-forth like “was it really that expensive?” and “which store is that even from,” with opinions split on the real price range. On the flip side, some praised the chicken items and onion rings, while others pointed out that McDonald’s own quality has been slipping lately — adding up to a verdict that wasn’t a simple case of one chain beating the other.

    They all turned into "Zetteria."

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Mos Burger has built its identity around pricier, quality-focused ingredients, while McDonald’s has leaned on its huge store network and low prices — so even though both are burger chains, they occupy different lanes. What split the thread wasn’t the taste itself so much as everyday practicality: too few stores and too far to reach, slow service, and small portions. Reactions to the price-list photo were mixed too, with people saying it didn’t match the prices at their own local branch, hinting that there may be real price gaps between stores. It’s also worth flagging that the claim in the thread that Lotteria got “renamed” to “Zetteria” is just 5ch slang riffing on its parent company Zensho — not an actual name change — which is easy to mistake for fact. Beyond simple taste comparisons, differences in everyday convenience seem to be what really drives how often people end up choosing one chain over the other.

  • Suica Penguin’s Successor Character Narrowed Down to Final 3 Candidates

The penguin character familiar to everyone from JR East’s “Suica” IC card has had its potential successors narrowed down to three final candidates, and the news blew up on 5ch. Thread posters were floored to learn that the penguin was never actually created exclusively for Suica in the first place — it originated from a picture-book character that illustrator Chiharu Sakazaki has been drawing since 1998 — with many replying “had no idea.” Meanwhile, the new candidate designs drew harsh criticism like “garbage design,” and posts pushing people to vote for one candidate, “B,” appeared as well, raising doubts about how fair the selection process really is.

The "Suica Penguin" Was Never Actually a Suica Character

The creator of the Suica Penguin is illustrator and picture-book author Chiharu Sakazaki. A lot of people on social media are reacting as if "the Suica Penguin was born for Suica," but that's actually a misconception.

Sakazaki has been putting out penguin picture books since 1998. If you look at those books, you'll see that the penguin in them is exactly what the Suica Penguin was based on.

    Guess it just changed careers

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The Suica Penguin originated from a picture-book character illustrator Chiharu Sakazaki has been drawing since 1998, rather than being an original design made specifically for Suica. In the thread, many commenters reacted with surprise (“had no idea”) at this backstory, suggesting the origins of a character beloved for over 25 years were surprisingly little known. The debate split mainly two ways. One was over how to judge the new candidate designs — while harsh criticism like “garbage design” was common, some pushed back, pointing to Myaku-Myaku (the divisive mascot of Expo 2025 Osaka) as proof that “you get used to anything once it’s familiar.” The other was distrust of the selection process itself, with posts urging people to vote for Candidate B and suspicions that the whole thing might be “a fixed match.” Note that various theories about why the penguin is being retired — “royalty costs,” “some scandal,” and so on — circulated in the thread, but none of them are based on any official statement from JR East and should be treated as unconfirmed.

  • “Revolvers Have No Advantage”: Gun Nerds Erupt in Massive 5ch Debate

On 5channel’s News VIP board, a post claiming “revolvers have no real advantages” sparked a detailed debate about handgun mechanics. Posters rattled off the usual perks — you can play Russian roulette, they rarely jam, and they don’t eject spent casings — only to be met each time with pushback like “semi-autos can do that too” and “antiques actually cost more.” The thread ranged from the classic Wild West two-gun reload trick to whether the silencer City Hunter’s hero uses on his revolver would actually work, before spiraling into a full-blown argument over how easy each type is to disassemble and maintain.

    It's just for looks, isn't it…
    2AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:09
Because the reload time gives it a breath of life
    7AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:10
    Re: #2
I feel that "breath of life" more from a mag change, honestly
    3AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:10
You can play Russian roulette with it
    8AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:10
    Re: #3
You can see the case rims poking out the back, though
    17AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:13
    Re: #3
You could do that with a semi-auto too, though
    23AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:14
    It doesn't jam
    30AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:24
    Re: #23
It's true that jamming is structurally impossible, but revolvers can absolutely fail to fire out of nowhere too — plenty of times
    34AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:25
    Re: #30
With a revolver you just pull the trigger again, but you can't do that with a semi-auto, right?
    31AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:24
    Cheaper to produce
You can tune the powder charge per round
Safer, since it won't fire unless the hammer's cocked
    38AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:26
    Re: #31
Prices run the gamut regardless of type, but a lot of revolvers are just fancy showpieces with zero tactical advantage, so if anything their average price is probably higher.

Also, antique revolvers are stupidly expensive too, so you probably shouldn't be calling revolvers cheap.
    35AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:25
    The casing doesn't fly out
    42AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:32
    Re: #35
Why exactly is it a problem if casings fly out? Go ahead and list them one by one — I'll shoot each one down.
    46AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:34
    Re: #42
When you're dual-wielding, a hot casing can hit your other hand — ouch
    49AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:35
    Re: #46
That's only a thing in movies, anime, and games…
It originally comes from a reloading technique for percussion revolvers back in the Old West
Back then, switching the gun from your left hand to your right basically was the reload
    54AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:38
    Re: #46
Lol, that's a cuter downside than I expected
Obviously the gun in your left hand for dual-wielding is its own dedicated left-hand model, right?
    37AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:26
Revolvers are the "auto-attack" type, so there's really no notable downside
Gatling guns are the "aimed-shot" type, so once you commit to firing you can't dodge afterward (Medarot game terminology)
    45AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:34
    Re: #37
Well, Metabee doesn't have piercing power in either arm anyway… (a robot character from the game/anime Medarot)
    40AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:29
    Re: #34
Which one has the advantage depends on the type of malfunction, you know
For the misfire case you're talking about — if it turns out to be a hangfire that goes off a split second late, it'll blow up in your hand
    43AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:32
    Re: #40
    So which is better:
not being able to fire at all,
or being able to fire, where a hangfire blows up in your hand but a true dud does nothing?
    50AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:36
    Re: #49
I couldn't tell what "that" was referring to
    Do you mean dual-wielding?
    53AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:38
    Re: #50
The move where you fire from both hands at once
It looks cool in Westerns, so it got used as a stock bit of showmanship a lot
    56AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:39
    Re: #54
Needing a dedicated left-hand gun is a downside though, isn't it
    58AnonymousSep 8, 2026 13:42
    Re: #56
Each one having its own name, with a dedicated gun for the left hand too — that's way cooler. What are you, an amateur?
    87AnonymousSep 8, 2026 14:12
    Re: #81
A revolver that can fire just by dropping the hammer doesn't even need detailed disassembly in the first place, right?
If you're going to demand that level of teardown from a revolver, a semi-auto should have to be broken into every last part too, lol
    93AnonymousSep 8, 2026 14:16
    Re: #87
Disassembly is about maintainability, you know?
So come on, go maintain it then
    99AnonymousSep 8, 2026 14:20
    Re: #93
Alright: clean the barrel, pop off the grip, give it a puff of breath—
    Huh? It still fires, lol

What about the semi-auto, then? How far do you have to maintain it to call it "perfect"? lol

Even Nintendo told you not to blow on metal parts… (a nod to the old myth that blowing into Famicom cartridges makes them work)

Aren't you contradicting the thread title now?

    Right?
    That's pretty lame, honestly

I've said all along that on the specific point you're replying to, semi-autos win on reliability

    Re: #38
Cheap antiques can be had for as little as 30,000 yen
    For reference, a 1911 runs about 30,000 yen and a G17 about 150,000 yen
You can shoot both .38 Special and .357, and capacity-wise an N-frame holds eight rounds
Loaded with .22LR, some models hold ten

The pricey ones are pricey, but something like an M10 will never hit 30,000 yen
    120AnonymousSep 8, 2026 14:38
    Re: #111
Disassembly methods vary by revolver model, so you need real knowledge to maintain one
But a semi-auto is so easy to service that even if you just picked one up off the ground, you could field-strip it with "drop the magazine, release the slide lock, run the slide forward"
    Semi-autos win on maintainability
    122AnonymousSep 8, 2026 14:40
    Re: #120
Sure, that's true if someone hands you a gun you've never seen before, but normally you'd be using your own, right?
Also, is "maintenance complete!" after just popping the slide off supposed to be a joke?
    126AnonymousSep 8, 2026 14:42
    Re: #120
Don't keep shifting the premise to suit yourself
You were just talking about a pair of one-off custom guns a second ago
    127AnonymousSep 8, 2026 14:44
Kind of curious now — City Hunter has his revolver fitted with a silencer, but does that actually work?
    130AnonymousSep 8, 2026 14:47
    Re: #127
With a special revolver like the Nagant, it actually does work
    131AnonymousSep 8, 2026 14:49
    Re: #130
But the casings, or whatever those are, are just sitting there exposed
So I'm wondering how it's supposed to suppress the sound
    133AnonymousSep 8, 2026 14:51
    Re: #131
At the moment of firing, the cylinder slides forward and seals tight against the barrel
    135AnonymousSep 8, 2026 14:55
    Re: #131
Suppressor-compatible revolvers really did exist historically. With the Nagant, the cylinder (nicknamed "renkon"/lotus root for its holed shape) moves forward when fired and presses flush against the back of the barrel, sealing off gas leakage to muffle the sound
It also uses dedicated ammunition with a specially designed casing
A Colt Python, on the other hand, would be pointless with one

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The relative merits of revolvers versus semi-automatics are a perennial topic among military enthusiasts. The point raised in the thread — that with a misfire you can simply pull the trigger again to fire the next round — is one of the real historical reasons revolvers have been prized for reliability. On the other hand, the claim that a hot casing burns your other hand during dual-wielding is closer to a myth popularized by Western movie choreography; posters in the thread themselves corrected it as “a holdover from hand-switching techniques used before cartridge-loading revolvers existed.” The late-thread back-and-forth over maintainability never really got resolved, since posters kept talking past each other over whether they meant “a gun you just picked up” or “a gun tuned for your own use.” Since which gun is “better” really depends on use case and situation, it’s best to read the thread’s claims not as gospel, but as one slice of enthusiast opinion.
