  • Is Toyota’s High-School Track (Technical High Schools) Really a Winning Ticket? 5ch: ‘I’d Rather Do Desk Work at a Second-Tier Company’

Landing a factory job at Toyota Motor straight out of a technical high school has long been seen as a “winning move,” but a 5ch thread went viral by pointing out that in reality, brutal sports-team-style hierarchies and grueling shift-work labor drive plenty of people to quit. The thread saw a mix of opinions on career choices: warnings that joining just for the pay can backfire into regret, the reality that “the more elite the company, the more academic pedigree decides your job assignment,” and tips on routes like transferring to university via a kosen (technical college). Some also voiced anxiety about the future — “once your body gives out, it’s over” — sparking a debate over whether that’s actually worse than desk work at a lesser company.

People often say "going from a technical high school straight into Toyota is a bigger win than graduating from some mediocre university," but that's not necessarily true.
Sure, the pay itself is quite good for a high school grad, which is exactly why it's such a popular choice at technical high schools (especially in Aichi Prefecture).
But in reality it comes with a brutal sports-team-style hierarchy, plus it's tough physical labor on a shift schedule — so a surprising number of people end up quitting.
    2AnonymousSep 27, 2026 14:34
The reality of Toyota's high-school-hire track (factory work) is tougher than it looks — a surprising number of people quit for reasons like "I'd rather do desk work even at a second-tier (or third-tier) company" or "I want to escape the physical labor and brutal hierarchy."

If you join just because the pay looks good on the surface, you might end up regretting it… 😢

There's even a theory that in the long run, desk work at a second-tier (or third-tier) company beats this, even if it looks less impressive on paper.

    Re: #2
No joke, elite companies divide job duties strictly by academic background.
Desk work and knowledge work basically only goes to four-year university grads (or at best kosen/junior college grads) — if you're a high school grad, it's almost all shop-floor work.
Granted, since it's an elite company, the pay itself isn't bad even for high school grads, but a surprising number of people quit because they can't handle the brutal physical labor and sports-team-style hierarchy… 😢
"Going from technical high school to Toyota" might look like a win short-term, but over the long haul it's not necessarily so (your stamina only goes downhill from here).
There are even companies that flat-out only hire people who were in sports clubs.
If anything, second-tier companies tend to care less about academic pedigree and will let even high school grads do knowledge work or desk jobs.
Though the pay at second-tier companies isn't great.

    Re: #7
That's exactly why, even in manufacturing-heavy Tokai (Aichi, Shizuoka, Mie), the kids who know the reality of technical high schools — or the genuinely bright ones — go to regular college-prep high schools instead.
People say "Aichi (the Nagoya metro area) is strong for technical high schools," but even among teens there, the academic-pedigree mindset runs strong, just not quite as strong as in greater Tokyo.
If anything, technical high schools are more popular in less affluent regions with lower university enrollment, like Tohoku or Kyushu — sometimes even more competitive to get into than a mediocre regular high school.
*That said, Tohoku and Kyushu don't have many big factories locally, so a lot of kids end up taking jobs in greater Tokyo or Kansai instead. And yes, you can land a job outside your home region even coming from a technical high school.

    Re: #8
Switching from a science track to humanities is rough, but there's also the option of getting into a kosen (technical college) and transferring to a university after year three.
Out in the countryside, kosen grads are in huge demand, and the kosen-to-former-Imperial-university route is also realistically on the table.
Well, Tokyo University and Kyoto University are obviously way too hard, but the regional "Imperial"-tier universities have local admission quotas, so you can get in if you put in the work.
Tsukuba is worth aiming for too.

I keep thinking Japanese manufacturing would be so much better if it would just drop the sports-team-style hierarchy culture, at the very least.

    Re: #9
Yeah, seriously. I get that it's physical work so you need stamina, and I get why some places only hire ex-athletes, but that brutal-hierarchy culture really needs to go.
They should start by reforming school club activities first.
Western countries run on merit too, but at least the hierarchy itself is way more relaxed.

Once your body stops cooperating, it's over — that's when you're locked into losing.

By the way, second-tier companies aren't as obsessed with academic pedigree, so even high school grads might get a shot at desk work — but here's the trap: the more elite the company, the MORE academic pedigree matters, so desk work basically never comes your way unless you're a university grad or above.

But there's barely any workplace better than that for a high school grad. Every shop-floor job is full of delinquent types (yankii), and the alternative is exploitative sales jobs.

The pay itself is definitely top-tier for a high school grad, but yeah, the physical labor is brutal… 😢
Some people also quit because they hate the sports-team-style hierarchy culture.

Some people flee Toyota for reasons like "I'd rather do desk work or sales, even at a second-tier company."
By the way, promotions actually come easier at second-tier companies (even without a degree).
Ironically, it's harder to climb the ladder at elite companies like Toyota.

Short-term, a Toyota job as a high school grad is a win, but apparently that's not always true long-term.
If anything, promotions come easier at second-tier companies, and sometimes it's better to take desk work or sales even for somewhat worse pay.
    19AnonymousSep 27, 2026 14:40
There's actually a long-shot route: go to Toyota Technological Institute and get treated as a university grad. You keep your company seat while becoming a student — the company covers your admission fee and tuition, and you still get paid. Though side jobs/starting a business are banned, you can't go on to grad school, and the entrance exam is brutal given typical technical-high-school academic levels.

Well, it's still better than blue-collar work at a second-tier (or third-tier) company, right? Even blue-collar pay there isn't bad.

But the sports-team-style hierarchy and brutal physical labor that come with blue-collar work aren't unique to Toyota either — so for some people, even desk work at a second-tier (or third-tier) company is the better deal.

You can just tell from technical high schools' entrance-exam difficulty — they're where lower-achieving students go. Kids who love science and actually have good grades go to SSH-certified schools (Super Science High Schools) or kosen instead.

To begin with, an average technical high school ranks below even a bottom-tier "self-proclaimed college-prep" regular high school.
Even the prestigious technical high schools lose out to self-proclaimed college-prep schools or kosen.

Also, since technical-high-school job placements are mostly physical labor (especially at elite companies, where it's ALL physical labor), you're way better off putting effort into sports clubs than chasing certifications.

The moment your body can't keep up, you've basically already lost.

In the long run, there's even an argument that desk work at a second-tier company beats this.

Background and key points of this discussion

Manufacturing jobs straight out of technical high school remain deeply popular, especially in the Tokai region around Aichi Prefecture, and it’s not unusual for starting pay and benefits to outstrip those of university graduates. That said, at many companies job placement and promotion are clearly divided along academic-pedigree lines, and the path from shop-floor work to desk work is said to be limited. The thread’s disagreement centered on how to weigh good pay against the physical and interpersonal toll it demands — some argued “it’s a win short-term, but desk work at a second-tier company is better long-term,” while others countered “even so, it’s an exceptional deal for someone with only a high school diploma.” Worth noting: these posts aren’t a systematic investigation into any specific company’s internals — they’re personal anecdotes and hearsay from an anonymous message board, and shouldn’t be read as reflecting official statistics on turnover rates or compensation.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Nanndemo Jikkyo G board) thread “[Sad News] Toyota Motor’s high-school-hire (technical high school) track looked like a winning ticket — turned out to be a regular hellscape…”

  • Komeda Coffee’s Coffee Tickets Only Work at the Store You Bought Them — 5ch Reacts: “Try That Elsewhere and You’ll Get a ‘Huh?’”

A thread titled “Let’s Talk About Komeda Coffee” popped up on 5ch’s cafe board, where regulars swapped stories about how the coffee tickets work, price hikes, and the shops’ atmosphere. The biggest surprise for many was learning that coffee tickets are basically only valid at the store where you bought them — a quirk attributed to the chain’s franchise model, which gives individual stores wide discretion over menus and pricing. Regulars were also surprised by bits of history they hadn’t known, like how the flagship first store was renovated to include an attached Okage-an sweets shop, and that the chain was under a South Korean investment fund from 2013 to 2017. Meanwhile, opinions were divided over the company’s longtime policy of allowing smoking at every seat.

such a relief that they started cutting it in half for you.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Komeda Coffee is a chain with a high proportion of franchise locations, and each store has some freedom to set its own menu and prices. The thread’s hot topic — that coffee tickets are basically only usable at the store where they were purchased — stems from this same store-by-store discretion. It also came out that from 2013 to 2017 the chain was under the umbrella of the South Korean-backed investment fund MBK Partners, a bit of history that even longtime regulars were surprised to learn. Opinions were split over the chain’s long-standing policy of allowing smoking at every seat, with some calling it out of step with the times and others defending it as a matter of customer choice. Commenters also noted quirks unusual for a chain restaurant, such as portion sizes closer to a dedicated bakery and store-to-store differences — like how much cream or red bean paste gets piled on — stemming from its franchise structure.

I think they mean the pace played out like a miler's race — today's time was 1:09.2 after all.

She's by Lord Kanaloa, so the raw speed to handle this distance was always there — it was obvious she'd step up once her overall ability came together. As for Puro Magic, getting the good ground on the outside wasn't even that big a factor.

Honestly, I don't feel like I can lose, so I'm posting my ticket before the race. The track's chewed up, nobody's sure if inside or outside has the edge, and the whole power balance could flip depending on how one horse gets ridden. Given all that, might as well just pray for total chaos.
Wanted a little extra tension too, so I deliberately left out Puro Magic.

    Re: #95
You just won ¥190,000 and you're still complaining, lol.

Background and key points of this thread

The Sprinters Stakes is a Grade 1 sprint run over 1,200m on the Chukyo turf course, and in most years it’s known as a race that produces chaos. As post 19 in the thread points out, ‘the last two years both had huge payouts’ — and it’s this year’s comparatively clean result that led to the thread title calling it ‘too easy.’ While reports of winning tickets poured in throughout the thread, opinions on the payout itself split between ‘cheap’ and ‘actually generous.’ That’s because a horse’s win-odds popularity and the payout on combination bets like the trio (sanrenpuku) or trifecta (sanrentan) are two separate things — the same finish can feel very different depending on how you bet it. There was also debate over whether the track favored front-runners or closers, though no clear consensus emerged. Note: comments mocking individual jockeys’ skill were a separate topic from evaluating the race itself, and have been excluded from this article.

  • 5ch Regular “Byosoin Kururi” Answers Every Single Reply on a Sunday — “First, Fix Your Personality”

On 5ch’s Nyuusoku VIP board, a regular going by the fixed handle “Byosoin Kururi” declared on Sunday morning that they’d “answer every single reply,” kicking off a thread where they responded one by one to whatever questions came their way. Topics ranged wildly — remedies for migraines and hangovers, health talk about depression and bipolar disorder, favorite reading habits, a future where AI takes people’s jobs, and recommended Cthulhu Mythos works. There was even a reunion moment with a regular who remembered a past exchange, and the whole thread stayed calm and friendly from start to finish.

    Background and Key Points

On 5ch’s VIP board, there’s a long-running tradition where a regular posting under a fixed handle (a “kotehan”) declares at some set time that they’ll “answer every single reply,” then works through whatever questions or jabs get thrown their way. This thread followed that same format, with questions covering remedies for migraines and hangovers, health topics like depression and bipolar disorder, favorite reading habits, Cthulhu Mythos recommendations, and AI’s impact on jobs. There was even a reunion moment with a regular who remembered past exchanges, and the whole thing stayed calm throughout, with no conflict or flame wars. Note: the thread also included an exchange where the poster claiming to be the real Kururi posted a face photo and got teased over their looks — since that can’t be verified and amounts to mocking someone’s appearance, it’s been left out of this article.

  • Killing Time on a 2-Hour Train Ride: 5ch Thread Reveals ‘Five Personalities, Not Counting the Main One’

The thread kicked off with a post reading “I’m bored, let’s talk,” and rolled along through stories like a 2.5-hour commute to college, the question of whether you’re supposed to take a girl’s “lol” on LINE at face value, and the trivial debate over whether to open a window while vacuuming. Partway through, one of the posters who’d been chatting revealed they were “up to five personalities, not counting the main one,” and the conversation shifted into claims of multiple personalities. As is typical for an anonymous board where nothing can be verified, reactions split between people asking earnest follow-up questions and people just poking fun.

    Background and Talking Points

Since 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board is fully anonymous, there is no way to verify posters’ personal backstories or claims like “multiple personalities” — whether any of it is true is anyone’s guess. Posts claiming Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) periodically go viral on social media too, but aside from the question of medical diagnosis, there’s also a role-play-style culture of performing distinct personas for fun, which is likely why the thread’s reactions split between people asking earnest follow-up questions and people just joking around. Meanwhile, everyday trivia like commute times or housework habits are a staple topic on anonymous boards — a way to peek into “some stranger’s daily life.” Note that portions of the exchange that devolved into personal insults have been left out of this article.

  • Why Won’t NEETs Work? 5ch Erupts Into Debate: ‘It’s Their Own Life’

A thread titled “Why do these so-called NEETs never work?” appeared on 5ch’s “Nanademo Jikkyo G” board, sparking a back-and-forth over employment and personal freedom. The thread’s original poster held firm to the position that “if you can’t explain your reason for not working, don’t butt in,” repeatedly pushing back against other posters. In response, commenters offered a range of conflicting views: “If their parents allow it, it’s their own life,” “There’s no real reason, they’re just lazy,” and “As long as they’re not bothering anyone else, that’s their right.” The discussion branched into finer points too, like the quality of one’s hobbies and whether not working should come with a sense of shame, but in the end the two sides never found common ground and the argument just kept going.

    Background and Talking Points

Administratively, “NEET” originally referred to a specific slice of the 15-34 non-working population who aren’t in school or doing housework, but on forums the term is usually used more loosely to mean anyone who isn’t working, and this thread proceeds without ever pinning down a strict definition either. Threads like this tend to follow a familiar pattern: the position that “not working is your own responsibility” talks past the position that “how you live is your own business as long as you’re not bothering anyone else,” and neither side ever really meets in the middle — exactly what played out again here. On top of that, these kinds of threads are often kicked off by a deliberately provocative post, and the discussion has a tendency to slide into personal attacks partway through. This thread was no exception, with some exchanges devolving into insults that treated the other person as if they had a disability, so those portions have been left out of this write-up.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nanademo Jikkyo G) thread “Why do these so-called NEETs never work?“

  • “6 Million Yen at 45 Is Winning” — 5ch Splits Over Income Debate

A salary thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board sparked a divide over whether a 45-year-old earning 6 million yen a year counts as a winner or as clueless about the real world. It kicked off with a post claiming “there’s no way you hit 10 million unless you’re a company president,” which drew a wave of pushback from posters claiming to work at major corporations or Nikkei 225-listed firms, saying they’d cleared 10 million yen in their 30s. Meanwhile, the claim that “Tokyo’s average income is over 7 million yen” was met with counters arguing you should look at the median, not the average — turning the thread into a debate over how to even read the statistics. Differences between rural and urban areas, and between big corporations and small-to-midsize firms, only made things messier.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

According to the National Tax Agency’s Statistical Survey of Actual Status for Salary in the Private Sector, the average salary for all wage earners nationwide falls short of 5 million yen. A 6 million yen income at 45 isn’t low by the national average alone, but in the thread, the more posters narrowed things down to “Tokyo,” “big corporations,” or “Nikkei 225,” the higher the numbers jumped — and that gap became the spark for the conflict. There were broadly two points of contention. One was a disagreement over how to read statistics — whether to use the average or the median as the benchmark (replies 9, 12, 16). The other was how far it’s fair to generalize differences based on company size or region as “normal.” Several posters cited themselves as examples working at major corporations to push back on “you can’t hit 10 million unless you’re a president,” but out of concern for being identified, no proof was ever offered, so the truth of these claims can’t be confirmed. Income threads also come with the usual 5ch caveat that self-reported numbers tend to get exaggerated, so it’s best to take any of these figures with a grain of salt.

※This article is an excerpt and summary based on the 5ch (“Nandemo Jikkyo G”) thread “The public says “6 million at 45 is a winner,” “Calling that a loser is way too out of touch,” “There’s no way you hit 10 million unless you’re a president lol”.”

  • Oda Sakura: ’18th-Gen Members Didn’t Know SMAP, and It Shocked Me’ — 5ch: ‘We Can’t Even Be Shocked Anymore’

Morning Musume’s Oda Sakura revealed that the newly joined 18th-generation members, who are still in junior high, didn’t know who SMAP was — and Akashiya Sanma responded, “It’s been 10 years since they broke up, so that kind of thing is only going to keep happening.” This sparked a broader debate on 5ch about how idols and Johnny’s talent get remembered by later generations. Many argued that TV variety shows fade quickly with the times, and that only work preserved as songs or films manages to survive across generations, while others countered that it’s a mystery why SMAP or Morning Musume ever got so popular in the first place — opinions were split.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

SMAP disbanded in 2016, meaning exactly 10 years have passed as of 2026. Morning Musume, meanwhile, has kept going for over 30 years since its formation, cycling through generation after generation of members. The 18th generation at the center of this story includes current junior-high schoolers who joined in 2026, and the backdrop here is that this is the first time in the group’s history that incoming members are younger than the group itself has existed. What split opinion on the thread was the question of what actually survives for later generations: the majority view was that music and films get remembered across generations, while TV variety shows and dramas fade quickly once they stop airing. That said, some pointed out that it’s a mystery why SMAP was ever so popular in the first place, and others noted exceptions like ‘Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana,’ which survives as a song — so no simple consensus emerged. It’s also worth noting, since the comments alone don’t spell this out, that Johnny’s agency’s historical reluctance to let its footage and information spread online (a point raised in comparison with BTS) is cited as one reason its legacy is less likely to carry over to younger generations.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Juice=Juice’s Sakura Ishiyama raved about a junior member’s singing voice on a program, saying, “I really love Mifu’s voice. That sparkle, or maybe you’d call it a clear, transparent feel…” The story was picked up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. The thread also brought up an earlier episode of “Hello! Q&A” in which Ishiyama had named Mifu (Kawashima) as the member whose singing voice she liked, and users reacted to the connection between the two remarks. As the discussion grew, more posts compared other members’ singing styles to things like "yakiniku" and "carbonated water," and the thread got lively debating how best to describe the appeal of each voice.

    Q. Which member's singing voice do you like?
    Sakura Ishiyama — Mifuu

Back then no reason was given, so it's great to finally hear what she likes about it

    Background and Talking Points

Ishiyama Sakura’s remark reportedly came up during the radio segment “MIX=Juice,” and the thread tied it to an episode of “Hello! Q&A” aired in July 2026, in which Ishiyama had named Mifu (Kawashima) as the member whose singing voice she liked. Opinions split over how to describe Mifu’s voice compared to other members’ singing styles — fans were divided on whether "heavy yakiniku" or "carbonated water" was the better comparison, with noticeable differences in how people rated it. Note that the original thread also contained posts disparaging certain members’ appearances and abuse directed at the thread starter; this article excludes those posts and focuses solely on the exchange about singing voices.

  • First-Ever Red Super Chat Gets Ignored — Sparks Debate Over Whether Paying for Attention Is ‘Shameless’

A user’s account of sending a Super Chat to their favorite streamer, only to be completely ignored, touched off a debate on 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board over whether red Super Chats (the top-tier, priciest donation color on YouTube) are shameless. One post dismissed the act of throwing money for “recognition” as pathetic, prompting a counterattack: “If craving recognition is shameless, then posting on this board is no different.” From there the thread spiraled into jabs comparing it to a hostess club, and pointed remarks that “the streamer is the one actually profiting here.” Neither side budged, and the argument never really went anywhere.

    18AnonymousSep 27, 2026 01:04
The moment you want your favorite streamer to notice you via Super Chat, that's already shameless if you ask me.
    19AnonymousSep 27, 2026 01:05
    Re: #18
If wanting recognition is shameless, every post on this board is guilty too.
Getting giddy when your favorite says your name and you wanting replies here are the same thing.
    28AnonymousSep 27, 2026 01:14
    Re: #19
I never said wanting recognition is shameless.
I said throwing money at someone just to get noticed is shameless.
At the end of the day it's driven by ulterior motives more than celebration or gratitude.
And I'm not posting here because I want replies either.
    32AnonymousSep 27, 2026 01:17
    Re: #28
Funny how you declare you don't want replies while writing a desperate wall of text.
If you had zero ulterior motives you'd just watch in silence — no money, no posts.
    35AnonymousSep 27, 2026 01:19
No wonder people compare this to a hostess club.
    37AnonymousSep 27, 2026 01:21
    Re: #35
Must be nice, thinking you've won just by saying "hostess club."
You're not even watching the streams, just piling on the mockery — what's the point?
    36AnonymousSep 27, 2026 01:21
Nobody wins with Super Chats, just quit already.
    39AnonymousSep 27, 2026 01:23
    Re: #36
Nobody wins? The streamer sure does. You sound like someone lecturing a donation box — it's hilarious.
    40AnonymousSep 27, 2026 01:23
    Re: #32
You call that a wall of text? I was just explaining myself.
Well, glad you got a laugh out of it.
    Fair enough, that's true.
    45AnonymousSep 27, 2026 01:25
    Re: #40
That's not "just explaining," that's just making excuses. Convenient how ending with "fair enough, that's true" makes you feel like you won.
    41AnonymousSep 27, 2026 01:24
    Re: #39
Sounds like you're the one throwing money at streamers.
    49AnonymousSep 27, 2026 01:27
    Re: #41
Throwing out a baseless guess like "sounds like" and calling that a win?
That kind of thinking reeks of someone who throws the most money of all.
    48AnonymousSep 27, 2026 01:27
    Re: #42
    Is that so.
Dunno what's got you so worked up, but this isn't going anywhere, so I'll bow out.
    50AnonymousSep 27, 2026 01:29
    Re: #48
That one's programmed to fire back no matter what you write.
Engaging with it is a waste of time.
    122AnonymousSep 27, 2026 03:06
If you'd just said one word — "I'm not interested in you people" — how many people would that have saved?
Even if you're a fool who can't see reality, that doesn't make it okay to make others miserable for money.
    133AnonymousSep 27, 2026 03:19
    Re: #122
Where'd you buy the setting where one line of "not interested" saves everyone?
Throwing a Super Chat or watching one is on the individual — deciding it makes someone else miserable is just your own delusion.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Super Chat donations get a cut taken by YouTube before the rest goes to the streamer, and whether a message actually gets read out loud is entirely up to the streamer’s discretion — there’s no guarantee it’ll be treated the way the sender hopes. The thread split along one core fault line: is donating money inherently shameless because it’s driven by a craving for recognition, or is posting on a message board just as much an expression of that same craving, only a matter of degree? Both sides kept needling each other without ever finding common ground. Note that the specifics of the original incident — why the Super Chat was ignored, how much was donated, or how the streamer responded — aren’t included in the quoted material and remain unknown. Partway through this back-and-forth, the thread veered off into unrelated chatter, and this piece extracts only the core of the argument, leaving those tangents aside.
