  • Hello! Project shows spark debate over older fans attending — 5ch: “It’s an optics problem”

A thread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board titled “Old men and grannies really shouldn’t be allowed at shows anymore, right?” took off. It started with a crowd photo from a show in Ise, where the strikingly high average age of the attendees became the talking point. Opinions in the thread clashed head-on: some argued fans should hold back voluntarily because “it looks bad,” while others countered that what people like and where they go is nobody’s business but their own. At the same time, some pointed out that older fans have supported the group for decades and represent a demographic that helps attract sponsors from certain industries — turning it into something messier than a simple generational spat.

Saw that crowd photo from the Ise show and had some thoughts

    Yeah, exactly
    offshore = company, right?
    4AnonymousSep 28, 2026 12:52
If it weren't for the old men and grannies, there'd be no Juice=Juice today
    6AnonymousSep 28, 2026 12:54
The Ise crowd is still tame.
If you want the group with the strongest 'nursing home' vibe in all of Hello!…
    8AnonymousSep 28, 2026 12:56
    It's honestly embarrassing
The age range is way different from other idol groups
    9AnonymousSep 28, 2026 12:56
Juice=Juice always looked after its older fans
and now it's the hottest act around
    10AnonymousSep 28, 2026 12:56
You should try going to one of Risachi's or Ressa's bar events sometime
    14AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:00
If skipping a show is going to kill you,
why not just move a little further underground (into the indie/'chika' idol scene)?
    16AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:00
Hello! Project's old-timers basically have zero social life otherwise — the only time they get out and share something with other people is at a Hello! show
    17AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:00
What's actually shocking is that this thread
is full of old men itself
    18AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:02
The Ise crowd is going to become the benchmark from now on —

    It's an optics problem!
    21AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:02
New, young fans don't stick around because the first time they show up, they end up witnessing a full nursing-home scene
Come on, Showa-era old-timers, hold back a little
    24AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:05
Speaking as someone almost 30, having at least some Showa-generation fans around actually keeps things comfortable
At a genuinely young scene like iLiFE!, the average fan age is barely over 20
Don't worry though, Hello! is never going to end up that dominated by young people
    25AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:05
I decided back when I turned 40 that I'd 'graduate' from shows once I hit 50

Wasn't there a photo from some AKB-family bus tour that was full of old people too?
    31AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:08
If you cut the older fans out, you'd be left taking photos with like three people
    32AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:09
    There've been fewer old-timers at Juice=Juice shows lately…
it's kind of sad, considering they supported the group back when it wasn't even popular
    33AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:09
It's kind of heartwarming, honestly — like a company employee trip
    36AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:10
You see AKB48-family fans at idol festivals here and there, but it's overwhelmingly male, and those male fans are even older than Hello!'s crowd — that's wild
In Hello!, the fans who follow so-called 'grandpa-killers' like Ishii or Fukuda are basically the average age for most 48-family groups and members
They broke big something like ten years after Morning Musume, so why is their fanbase that much older?
    51AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:15
    Re: #36
Ressa's fans average 60 years old, and AKB still tops that — that's impressive

Here's a tip for going to shows: if you skip whatever you personally consider the single most important show of the year, you can surprisingly get over the habit
    38AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:10

    Re: #39
    That never really ends, though
Even if you start by telling yourself you'll just stop traveling to away shows, between tours, festivals, bus tours, and fan club events, you're never actually going to 'graduate'
Short of flat-out skipping your favorite member's bar events Re: #39
it's just not going to happen
    40AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:11
It's actually the opposite: having Showa-generation fans in the crowd is exactly what makes it possible to land insurance or health-food sponsorships down the line
You could never run that kind of ad campaign with a fanbase like iLife! or Kawalab's
Having a different customer base from everyone else is the strength

It's also why RESCENE, the biggest K-pop girl group right now, became the first idol act to land a deal with the convenience-store chain CU — because their fandom isn't 'women-only' (a crude slang term implying an all-female, sponsor-unfriendly fanbase)
    43AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:12
    Re: #40

    Re: #47
Of course Hello Pro Kenshuusei events are full of old men
it's so old-man-heavy that the vibe is actually really safe and orderly

    Background and points of contention

Hello! Project has roughly 30 years of history since Morning Musume’s 1997 debut, and the fans who followed from day one have simply aged right along with it. Because of that, it’s well known among fans that Hello! Project’s live audience tends to skew older than other idol groups’. The thread’s central fault line came down to one question: should older fans hold back for the sake of “optics”? That drew pushback from people who saw it as excluding fans who’ve supported the group for years, set against concerns that a highly visible older crowd makes it harder for new, younger fans to stick around. There were also arguments that an older audience makes it easier to attract sponsors from industries like insurance and health foods — showing this is a more complicated issue than simple taste, with a business angle woven in too.

  • Final Boss Reveal Timing: Early, Mid, or Late? 5ch Debates It Hard

On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, a thread heated up over which is best for RPGs and manga: a final boss who’s “there from the very start,” one “whose true identity is revealed midway through,” or one who “shows up abruptly right at the very end.” Posters traded opinions citing specific titles like Lost Odyssey, Final Fantasy VI, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Dragon Quest. The “revealed midway” pattern won the most support as the “safe bet,” while plenty of voices also praised the structure where an enemy commander visible from early on simply turns out to be the true final boss. On the topic of an ally character secretly being the final boss, names likely to spark debate came up too — like Rinoa (FF8).

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The timing of a final boss’s reveal is a classic fork in narrative construction, generally splitting into two types: the “plain sight” pattern, where the mastermind visible from early on simply turns out to be the true enemy, and the “twist” pattern, where an unexpected entity appears at the end. Though it wasn’t raised in the thread, the twist pattern risks feeling like a “bolted-on villain” if the foreshadowing isn’t handled carefully, while the plain-sight pattern carries the mirror-image weakness of struggling to sustain tension through to the finale if the early impression is too weak. The “revealed midway” pattern earned praise as the “safe bet” likely because it’s easier to balance the amount of foreshadowing against the impact of the reveal. The titles cited — Lost Odyssey, FF6, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and others — are mostly works that have been out or running for a long time, and the relative lack of references to recent titles suggests this classification itself may be a somewhat dated framework.

  • One Piece: Zoro Dons His Bandana and Awakens Conqueror’s Haki — Fans Split Over Art Quality and Power Creep

In the latest chapter of One Piece, Zoro ties on his bandana and unleashes Conqueror’s Haki, sparking a flood of reactions on 5ch’s Nanidemo Jikkyo G board. Rather than excitement, the thread was dominated by complaints about the art — “the direction has gotten worse,” “it used to hit harder with one big splash panel” — along with pointed remarks that Conqueror’s Haki has become so common among characters that it now amounts to a “bargain sale.” Commenters also noted the still-blurry distinction between Armament and Observation Haki, and voiced concern over creator Eiichiro Oda’s health amid his frequent hiatuses — the thread blending genuine excitement with a sense of fatigue toward the long-running series.

Conqueror’s Haki was originally portrayed as a rare trait held by only a handful of figures, such as Whitebeard and Shanks, but in recent years more and more characters — even within the Straw Hat crew itself — have gained the ability, leading commenters to describe the setting as having inflated to the point of a “Conqueror’s Haki bargain sale.” The fact that the story keeps moving forward without clearly explaining the difference between Armament and Observation Haki has fed complaints that the series has become “less a battle of abilities and more a Haki stat-check.” On the art side, many readers unfavorably compared this chapter’s paneling to the impact of past full-page splash panels, calling the direction “degraded,” compounded by ongoing worries over Eiichiro Oda’s health given his frequent hiatuses. Zoro’s bandana has long served as a visual cue for a Haki awakening, but this time many readers felt that on its own it fell flat.

  • On a ¥400K Take-Home Salary, He Bought a ¥6M Toyota Alphard — ‘Residual Value’ Financing Brings It Down to ¥70K/Month; 5ch: ‘That’s Living Like Nobility’

Kenji (a pseudonym), 45, manages an electronics retail store and lives with his wife and their junior-high-school-age son. He earns roughly ¥6 million a year and pays ¥120,000 a month on his mortgage. A news article making the rounds on 5ch described how he ended up signing for a ¥6 million Toyota Alphard: a standard auto loan would have cost him about ¥110,000 a month, but he was talked into a “residual value credit” (zan-kure) plan that brought it down to ¥70,000 a month instead. The thread was split — some asked whether he’d actually thought through the balloon payment waiting at the end of the contract, others argued that residual-value credit is really just “renting” the car rather than a genuine loan, and some said they understood the impulse to buy a car beyond your means just to keep up appearances.

Kenji (pseudonym, 45) manages an electronics retail store. He currently lives with his wife and his junior-high-school-age son. His annual income is about ¥6 million and he has roughly ¥4 million in savings, but he’s paying down a ¥120,000-a-month mortgage.

But once he added the trim level and options he wanted, the car’s price came to about ¥6 million. Kenji’s monthly take-home pay is around ¥400,000, out of which ¥120,000 goes to the mortgage. Taking out a standard auto loan would have meant monthly payments of roughly ¥110,000.

“With this plan, your monthly payment comes to about ¥70,000.”

He pays ¥4.2 million over 5 years and there's still ¥3 million left? So ¥6 million turns into ¥7.2 million over 5 years? Isn't that interest insane? Is that just normal for residual-value credit?
And surely he signed the contract after being told upfront this is exactly how it'd play out, right?
What was his actual plan here?

    20AnonymousSep 28, 2026 09:44
It works the same as a lease, basically
You take out a new loan against the residual value
As long as you don't return the car, you're not obligated to restore it to original condition
So just drive it into the ground until the residual value's nearly gone,
    then buy it outright

    Re: #63
A lease is just a rental

    Background and Points of Debate

Residual-value credit (“zan-kure”) is a financing scheme that calculates monthly payments after subtracting an estimated future trade-in value (the “residual”) several years down the line — functionally, it sits somewhere between a standard loan and a lease. The monthly payments look lighter, but interest keeps accruing on that residual portion too, so to keep driving the car you eventually need to refinance or settle the balance in one lump sum, meaning the total cost tends to balloon past what a regular loan would cost. Commenters on the thread pointed out that “you can’t just pay off the residual with a normal loan” and that “you can refinance it, but nobody knows what the rate will be” — the full mechanics of the plan are easy to miss from the sales pitch alone, which sets buyers up for misunderstandings. Some also noted that since the chip shortage, certain dealers have prioritized residual-value contracts because they’re more profitable, leaving customers who want a standard loan waiting far longer for delivery — suggesting vanity isn’t the whole story here.

  • JoJo Part 7 Anime’s Rap Ending Theme Sparks 5ch Uproar: ‘Way Too Lame’

A rap track used as the ending theme for the anime adaptation of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 7 (Steel Ball Run) has ignited debate on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyou G” board, with posters calling it “way too lame.” The thread went beyond simple pans of the song itself: some argued the past openings and endings (Part 3’s “Ora Ora Ora Ora,” or the Western tracks reportedly hand-picked by creator Hirohiko Araki) were already plenty lame, others questioned the production decision to go with a rap style in the first place, and still others debated the different ways anime songs versus hip-hop tend to be received. What started as one-sided criticism turned into a much broader back-and-forth.

Background and key points of this discussion

The JoJo anime series has a history of distinctive opening and ending productions for each part, and the use of Western songs or tracks personally chosen by the series supervisor (such as “Last Train Home,” mentioned in comments #50 and #56) has often become a talking point. This time the target was the original rap track written for the Part 7 (Steel Ball Run) ending, and the thread mixed two distinct threads of criticism: one focused on the song’s low quality on its own merits, and another on dissatisfaction with the production choice to break from the series’ usual pattern without delivering the quality to back it up. As seen in comments #13, #20, and #101, some pushed back that past openings were plenty lame too, so this wasn’t simply a case of “only this one is bad.” One point readers might miss is that most of the criticism was aimed at the producers’ decision-making and the song’s composition, not at attacking the artist personally — the thread as a whole wasn’t centered on personal attacks.

    Background and Discussion Points

This thread is one installment of “全力スレ” (the “All-Out Thread”), a long-running format on 5ch’s VIP board in which a moderator assigns a topic via reply-quote (an “anker”) and participants have to track down the actual item, photograph it, and post it as proof. The “otsu” that shows up constantly in replies is 5ch shorthand for “good work” — a casual nod of appreciation for the effort of hunting something down. This particular thread marked the final day of a holiday special, with prompts ranging from everyday objects like a down comforter, a basketball, and framed postage stamps to more abstract ones like a forum flame war caught in the act or a fighting-game special-move input. The grand finale — a taste comparison of coffee from Japan’s three major convenience store chains — appears to have involved hopping between multiple stores late at night, and the thread lit up with posters sharing in the sense of accomplishment. What might look like idle hanging-out at a glance actually comes with the extra step of proving each item with real, physical evidence.

  • 5ch: ‘Winny Was Amazing at Its Peak’ — Debate Erupts Over Whether the Developer’s Arrest Was Justified

A 5ch thread reminiscing about Winny, the file-sharing software that took Japan by storm in the early 2000s, blew up with activity. It started with posts recalling the era’s vibe — most of the PCs in university computer labs showing the Winny screen, movies circulating online the very day they hit theaters — before spiraling into a debate over the arrest of its developer, Isamu Kaneko, on charges of aiding and abetting copyright infringement, and whether that arrest was justified. Posters split between those who argued the crackdown chilled Japan’s entire IT industry and those who said it was inevitable given how much copyright infringement the software enabled, with comparisons to America’s Napster and theories linking Winny’s architecture to the origins of Bitcoin flying back and forth.

Re: #87 Sounds like you don't even know the backstory here. After an earlier arrest, everyone on the download board was panicking about 'guess we can't use WinMX anymore' — so Kaneko stepped up, said he'd build something with anonymized, encrypted connections so nobody could get arrested, and then built and released it. Given that, it's hard to see it as anything other than premised on illegal uploading from day one
    102AnonymousSep 27, 2026 22:36
Re: #98 In any era, resisting information censorship is only natural, if you ask me

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Winny was a P2P file-sharing program released in 2002. Its developer, Isamu Kaneko, was arrested and indicted in 2004 on suspicion of aiding and abetting copyright infringement. He was convicted at trial, acquitted on appeal, and the Supreme Court finalized that acquittal in 2011. In other words, it’s a commonly misunderstood point that he was ‘found guilty simply for building the software’ — the courts ultimately affirmed the opposite. The theory floated in the thread that ‘Winny became a technical forerunner of Bitcoin’ remains no more than a popular claim and isn’t an established historical fact. The Napster comparison also came up, but it’s worth noting the legal situations differ: Napster was driven into paying damages and shutting down its service through a civil lawsuit brought by copyright holders, whereas with Winny it was the individual developer who faced criminal prosecution.

  • Late-Night Commentary Thread Descends Into Image-Posting Chaos — Then Someone Says “Enough With the Woman-Bashing”

A thread titled “Tousuko University, Department of Double Punch 👊😅👊🏡” popped up on 5channel’s “Anything Goes Live Commentary” board (Nandemo Jikkyo G). The title is just wordplay with nothing to do with the actual content, which followed the usual late-night pattern of posted images and back-and-forth jabs. As pictures of celebrities and internet memes piled up, one poster complained, “Isn’t this place full of people who are hostile toward women?” — only for another to shoot back, “Take your woman-bashing elsewhere.” The exchange ended up exposing just how differently posters feel about the board’s usual atmosphere.

    Background and Talking Points

“Nandemo Jikkyo G” (Anything Goes Live Commentary) is one of several boards where users post live commentary alongside a specific show or stream, and it’s known for thread titles that are pure wordplay or memes with nothing to do with the actual content. This time’s “Tousuko University, Department of Double Punch” is a perfect example — on these late-night commentary threads, it’s become standard for anonymous posters to trade images and quick quips under titles that make no sense at all. What stood out this time was a remark dropped in the middle of all that chatter: “Isn’t this place full of people who are hostile toward women?” Jokes mocking women aren’t unusual on commentary boards, but the exchange also shows there’s a real contingent of posters willing to call that out. The board’s mood is far from uniform, and how different posters react to it is something you wouldn’t necessarily catch from outside the thread.

On September 27, photos of Juice=Juice’s Ria Matsunaga were posted on 5ch’s Hello! Ria Matsunaga is a member of Juice=Juice, and the thread suggests her expressions and demeanor have softened since “the period when her group skill was being criticized.” That said, this yardstick is an insider metric used among Hello! Project fans, and the thread doesn’t spell out the backstory, making it hard for first-time readers to follow. The coexistence of “I liked her old face better” and “she’s evolved” comes down largely to differing gut reactions to how makeup and aging change someone’s look, not a simple better-or-worse verdict. It’s a good example of the classic 5ch dynamic where compliments and harsh critiques sit side by side in the very same thread.

  • Last-Place Student Gets Into Meiji University Straight Out of High School — “Wait, Is This a Prep School?” 5ch Weighs In

A poster revealed that a student who ranked dead last in their high school class got into Meiji University’s Faculty of Letters straight out of high school, asking 5ch, “Can this school even be called a prep school?” The thread lit up over real examples from the poster’s school: the class’s top student went on to Keio University’s Faculty of Economics via a designated-school recommendation, while the runner-up got into the University of Tokyo’s ultra-competitive Science III program after a year of “masked ronin” study (secretly retaking exams while enrolled elsewhere). Commenters argued heatedly over which path — recommendation-based admission or the general entrance exam — actually reflects higher academic ability, along with side debates about the school’s policy of not splitting humanities and science classes and how far its social studies curriculum stretched.

The top student got into Keio via a designated-school recommendation, and the next-best student (with some complicated circumstances) became a 'masked ronin' for a year and got into Science III.

Re: #2 I don't get why the top student would go to Keio through a recommendation. Guess that world exists too.
    5AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:11
Re: #2 Their grades were so good it felt like a waste not to use the slot, so they went with Keio Economics. Honestly, if they'd taken the general exam I think they could've gotten into Todai. That kid studied nonstop.
    7AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:12
This is a sneaky thread hyping up Keio.
    8AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:12
Re: #7 It's garbage because it's just a recommendation slot.
    16AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:15
Re: #8 It doesn't add up that someone with better ability than the guy who got into Science III would go to Keio Economics via recommendation. It's obvious OP has ties to Keio and is just hyping the school.
    18AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:18
Re: #16 Being #1 in the grade means having the #1 grades. And why would I need to hype up Keio anyway? No need to hype a school whose admissions routes mostly favor students with overseas/returnee backgrounds.
    14AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:14
Unless you're from the countryside or went to an elite prep school, nobody cares about your high school.
    15AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:15
Re: #14 If nobody cares, why'd you open this thread then? ❓♥
    17AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:15
Re: #5 No, if you're better than the guy who got into Science III after a gap year, I don't get the point of taking a recommendation slot unless the reason is literally 'I just wanted to go to Keio.' The school should've let someone else use that slot — the top student could've gotten into Keio on merit alone.
    20AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:18
Re: #17 The Science III gap-year guy had some complicated circumstances behind it, so think of that as a separate case.
    19AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:18
Getting into Meiji from dead last is actually a pretty solid deviation score, no?
    21AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:19
Re: #19 Thanks 🥹 Even someone like me busted my ass studying from June onward 🥹
    22AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:19
Re: #18 What else would 'number one' even mean? And if OP has ties to Keio, hyping it up makes sense.
    27AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:23
Re: #22 Look, I'm literally the guy from the thread title. I went to Meiji — it's not some 'rejected from Waseda' situation, Meiji was genuinely my first choice, so I never even considered Keio. As for why the top designated-school slot at our school was Keio, that's just what was on offer — there was no Waseda or ICU slot. We did have Sophia and Tokyo University of Science, though.
    23AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:19
Re: #20 The kid who got the Keio recommendation had better grades than that guy, right? I seriously don't get it.
    25AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:21
Re: #23 The kid with the Keio recommendation had straight A's (all 5s) for all three years. The kid with the complicated circumstances was short on attendance too, I think, so recommendation probably was never even an option for them.
    24AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:20
Ranking science and humanities students against each other when they take completely different subjects? Sounds fishy.
    28AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:23
Re: #24 Our school doesn't split classes by humanities/science at all. It's a general track, and while there's some subject choice within that, most students lean humanities so they never bothered separating us.
    79AnonymousSep 27, 2026 21:07
Re: #28 So everyone takes math all the way through III/C? Even though it's not even an exam subject for a lot of students. Is there really a prep school that inefficient?
    82AnonymousSep 27, 2026 21:08
Re: #79 Kaisei does that. The reasoning is that calculus and probability come in handy no matter where you end up.
    86AnonymousSep 27, 2026 21:09
Re: #79 I think Math C was only for people taking the 'exam math' elective — it was like a Course-B type option. I took modern Japanese history myself.

Re: #34 Probably because I went to a prep school.
    39AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:31
Re: #35 I see, so academic ability even gets you into practical subjects like PE and home ec. Guess my school wasn't a prep school then. Thanks for going out of your way to explain.
    57AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:51
Re: #39 We're seriously talking past each other… I don't get why someone with better ability than the gap-year Science III guy would need to rack up points in PE or home ec (what are you, an old man) just to land a measly Keio recommendation.
    60AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:57
Re: #57 ??? Lol lol lol, how does that make you 'higher ability' lol. Thanks for that reading comprehension that couldn't even get into a Nikkoma school (mid-tier private university tier). This is exactly the kind of essay you'd see on Meiji's all-faculty unified exam 🤣
    61AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:57
Re: #57 And what's with the 'old man' crack? I'm still on the Izumi campus (Meiji's campus for underclassmen), thank you very much 😡

Sorry to butt in as someone who got into Waseda via the old Center Test admission route — this was back in the Center Test era.
    58AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:53
Re: #56 Bun-ichi (Waseda's old First Faculty of Letters) was just Japanese, English, and an essay, you know? Back when even I could get in.
    89AnonymousSep 27, 2026 21:11
Re: #56 I honestly don't know anything about the Center Test, so I can't really speak to that, sorry. Though getting into Waseda via the Common Test admission route would be impressive — so if you're so accomplished, why can't you explain Re: #78?
    71AnonymousSep 27, 2026 21:03
I went to Kaisei, and the guy who was 5th from the bottom in our year got into a MARCH school (mid-tier private group: Meiji/Aoyama/Rikkyo/Chuo/Hosei) after one gap year. So I think OP's story is fishy. The only high schools ranked above mine are Tsukukoma and Nada anyway.
    75AnonymousSep 27, 2026 21:05
Re: #71 I'm from Kaisei too, and the guy who was dead last in my year got into Todai after a gap year. So I guess it depends on the year.

Re: #90 Huh? Didn't you go to a prep school?
    101AnonymousSep 27, 2026 21:15
Re: #90 By the way, back in my day even the science-track kids took two social studies subjects in 2nd year out of Japanese history, geography, and world history, plus ethics and civics. By 3rd year you'd obviously narrow it down to one, but the reasoning for doing all that was 'because it'll be useful once you're out in the real world.'

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Behind this topic lies a difference in evaluation standards between private universities’ “designated-school recommendation” system and the general entrance exams used by national and public universities. Because recommendation slots are awarded based on a student’s in-school record (regular exam scores and attendance), students with well-rounded performance across subjects tend to have the advantage. A grueling general-exam track like Todai’s Science III, by contrast, tests a student’s ability to break through in specific subjects — so the two use different yardsticks and can’t simply be compared. The thread’s disagreement essentially came down to whether “overall strength on the in-school record” or “exam-breakthrough ability” should count as the true measure of academic ability. The fact that the poster’s school doesn’t split classes by humanities and sciences also made it harder to judge whether it really counts as a prep school — and since some schools (such as those feeding into an affiliated university) have a low bar for internal advancement, this also shows the limits of judging a school’s level by university names alone. It’s also worth noting that the text never makes clear what subjects or time period the “last place” and “top” rankings were actually based on, so the numbers shouldn’t be taken entirely at face value.
