  • Hello! Project’s Pre-Show Ritual Chant “○○-chan, You’re So Cute!” — 5ch Weighs In: “Cute Kanira!”

At Hello! Project concerts, it’s become a tradition that in the few minutes before the show starts, someone shouts “○○-chan, you’re so cute!” and the crowd responds with “That’s right, that’s right!” On the related 5ch thread, posters chimed in one after another about when this custom started and which groups do it, sharing examples of full names being shouted, nicknames, and even oddball variations where people shout out their pet’s name instead. Opinions clashed between those who found it “creepy” or “peer pressure,” and those who saw it as “a tradition that builds a sense of unity,” highlighting a split over this pre-show ritual.

Kikichan: "That 'That's right, that's right!' thing after someone yells '○○-chan, you're so cute!' before the show starts — what is that? Is it a tradition?"
Fukuchan: "You can hear it even from outside (backstage), right?"

    "○○-chan, you're so cute~"
    "I know, right~"
    I've heard that version too

    @anztolchock
It still cracks me up that someone who went to their first Hello! Project show because of "Moreme" posted, "Turns out Hello! Project has a designated few minutes before showtime when you're allowed to shout members' full names."

    @kobon_oriori
Technically it's the few minutes right after the five-minutes-to-showtime announcements, lol. What really shows how times have changed is that women's voices have started joining in on this "cringe-off call battle." At trainee showcases it's still pretty cringe, but at Juice=Juice shows it's gotten a lot less cringe. Then again, Juice=Juice has always had a lot of "Juice calls" to begin with.

There can't be that many people shouting full names.
It's probably more like nicknames, something like "Cheru~"
    10AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:36
M-Line has a custom like that too, huh.
    12AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:37
There was this excruciating moment when a female Fukumura fan shouted "Fukumura Mizuki-san, please don't get married—!" and the whole place went dead silent.

    Re: #12
    What even is that, lol
    13AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:39
Fukumura fans and Inaba fans are full of "gachikoi" (fans seriously, romantically in love with the idol), after all.

    18AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:42
Was the "Maa-chan's cute today too" guy there today? I heard a similar-sounding chant.
    23AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:43
A Morito fan said they've basically outsourced the pre-show name-calling and dropping cash on merch to the Sato fans.

    Re: #23
So they were there today after all.
    25AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:44
"You're so cute—!" is the Sato fans, and "That's right, that's right!" is the Inaba fans.
That's just how it's ended up settling in.

    31AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:45
It was already creepy enough just shouting names, and now it's gotten even creepier.
    34AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:47
Honestly it's louder than the in-song calls or the encore chants, lol.
    36AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:48
There's the "Karin-chan's too cuuute! Too cuuute! Too cuuute!" chorus, and the "Takeuchi Akari-chan, yoohoo! Akari-chan, yoohoo! Akari-chan, yoohoo!" chorus too, so there's plenty of variety.
    39AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:50

Soran Bushi (the traditional fisherman's folk song/dance) is trending right now, so that checks out.
    40AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:50
Calling out from the cheap seats as tradition — it's basically the ōmukō of Kabuki. (the traditional shouted praise from the back seats in Kabuki theater)
    44AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:53
It's not really "caught on" — it's just the same people doing it every time.
    48AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:56
This is creepy, honestly. Where did it even start?
VTuber fans do it too, right?
    49AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:58
M-Line draws a lot of hardcore fans, so it can't be helped.

I was watching an STU48 show the other day, and after someone yelled "○○'s the cutest—!"
someone else shouted back "No she's not—!"
and that was honestly the funniest part of the whole show.
    53AnonymousSep 27, 2026 21:06
For full names, it's gotta be "Shimizu Saki-saaan."
    54AnonymousSep 27, 2026 21:07
At the matinee show, someone suggested "it'd be fun if you shouted pets' names instead" in response to the pre-show "○○-chan, you're so cute—!" chant, and as a result the evening show was way too funny, with more pet names getting shouted than member names.

    "Kanira, you're so cute—!"
    "That's right, that's right, that's right, that's right—!"

    59AnonymousSep 27, 2026 21:25
Anything beyond just calling out names feels like too much self-assertion for my taste.
Though I guess if you're a "zentsuu" fan (someone who attends every single show on a tour), it can't be helped.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

This “pre-show call” is a custom seen across Hello! Project as a whole — the thread mentions multiple groups, including Juice=Juice and trainee showcases, showing this isn’t limited to just one group. Details like whether the name being shouted is a member’s full name or a nickname, and whether the person leading the chant is a longtime fan or a newcomer, vary from show to show, with no single unified rule. Where opinions in the thread split was over whether to see this as “tradition” and a way of “building a sense of unity,” or as “creepy” and “peer pressure” — with some newer fans reportedly left confused by it. There’s also more to it than a simple running gag: in at least one case mentioned in the thread, the chant’s target shifted from member names to pet names after a suggestion made during the matinee show, showing how a fan-driven custom can be reshaped along the way.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Asakura Kiki: “What’s that ‘That’s right! That’s right—!’ thing after ‘○○-chan, you’re so cute—!’ before the show? Is it a tradition?”“.

  • Is Haggling a ‘Given’ on Mercari? 5ch Erupts Into Fierce Debate

It started with a post: ‘I listed something for 1,000 yen and got a comment asking for a 100 yen discount — it creeped me out.’ A reply pushing back — ‘Mercari is a flea market, so haggling is a given. If you don’t like it, sell to a recycle shop instead’ — racked up 20,000 likes, and when the exchange was shared on 5ch, the thread split right down the middle. Is haggling simply ‘part of the nature of a flea market,’ or is it ‘just a feature that exists — not something you’re obligated to accept’? Both sides kept trading concrete examples to make their case.

    1AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:00
It all started with a tweet: 'I listed something for 1,000 yen and got a comment asking if I'd take 100 yen off — totally creeped out.'
In the replies, one comment got 20,000 likes: 'Mercari is an online flea market. Haggling is a given. If you don't like it, go sell it to a recycle shop — they'd give you less than 100 yen for it anyway.'
    Who's right here?
    2AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:02
    It's not a given
    7AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:02
    Re: #2
The answer's right there. Stuff that Book Off (a secondhand bookstore chain) would only give you 10 yen for can still turn a profit of several hundred yen on Mercari.
Items that are actually going to sell, sell before any discount comment ever shows up.
    11AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:03
    Re: #2-3
Mercari's whole concept is a flea market, and the official service even encourages price negotiation.
    14AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:04
Discounting is a given on Mercari. It's straight from the company itself.
    23AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:06
    Re: #14
Just because you *can* doesn't mean it's a given.
    35AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:12
    Re: #14
    Where's the official source, then?
    25AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:06
Guess I'll just list everything higher to account for the haggling, then.
    28AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:08
    Re: #25
    Exactly this.
So I'll list it at 1,050 yen and knock off 50 yen lol, here, buy it, cheapskate lol

    Re: #28
If that's priced above market rate, it won't sell. Items that actually sell, sell before any discount-request comment ever shows up.

    Re: #30
First off, it's not like it costs me anything if it doesn't sell lol
Most normal buyers don't ask for discounts.
So why not just buy from a listing that's already at market price?
    33AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:11
So what, hearing this means I should list high from the start to leave room for discounts?
    That's such a pain.
    36AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:12
    Re: #33
If you've actually used Mercari you'd know — overpriced stuff just doesn't sell. You'll end up marking it down yourself anyway.
    34AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:12
That's just fair pricing. List below market rate and it sells instantly. Getting a haggling comment is just proof you priced it above market.
    40AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:13
    Re: #34
The whole idea of a 'market rate' on a flea-market app is weird to begin with.
Mercari's the one overstepping by dictating prices.
    49AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:16
Sorry to bother you with a comment. I'm considering buying this — if a discount is possible, how much could you come down?
    54AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:18
    Re: #49
    Hello there.
Sorry! A discount won't be possible!

If you're after a lower price, why not try looking for the same item at an actual flea market?
Apparently you might be able to get it for around 100 yen there.
    Best of luck to you!
    57AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:19
There's literally a feature for requesting a discount, so it's fine to use it.
If you don't want that, just write 'no discounts' on your profile.
    58AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:20
    Re: #57
So why does everyone skip that feature and haggle in the comments instead?
    74AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:26
Accept the offer or don't, that's your call — but if you don't even want to be asked, go use Yahoo Auctions or some other platform instead.
    78AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:29
    Re: #74
Yahoo Auctions has its own problem — it's crawling with self-styled 'pros' (really just difficult old guys), and it's become the norm that you can't even buy anything with a zero rating.
    80AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:30
    Re: #72
At the very least, Mercari is an online flea market, Rakuma's a flea market too, and Yahoo Flea Market is obviously a flea market as well.
You go use Yahoo Auctions instead.

    85AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:32
Just go buy it at a recycle shop then.
Furniture and stuff is way cheaper there than on Mercari anyway.
    89AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:33
    Re: #85
Well, furniture shipping costs are basically insane on Mercari.
    86AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:32

Re: #1 literally says discounting is a given.
    94AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:36
Haggling is up to the buyer.
Accepting or refusing is up to the seller.
Being creeped out by it is up to whoever.

Why is that so hard to understand?
    97AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:38
Flea market or not, haggling is basically possible in any kind of trade.
Even today, go to a local shopping street and you can still get a discount (or a little extra thrown in for free).
    99AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:40
    Re: #97
Like getting a little extra from the greengrocer, or having the odd change rounded off. That kind of thing used to show up all the time in Sazae-san and Crayon Shin-chan.
But it's a sight you don't see anymore now that chain stores have taken over everywhere.
    100AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:42
    Re: #99
That's not something shopkeepers do for just anyone, though. You get that kind of service because you look presentable or you're friendly.
If some total stranger you've never met, whose face you don't even know, tells you 'knock 100 yen off that 1,000 yen item,' that's just plain creepy.
    101AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:44
    Re: #100
Why are you so worked up about this?
You're more worked up than the haggler ever was.
    103AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:45
    Re: #100
A flea market listing is meaningless if it doesn't sell, so in the end you discount it. It's not an ongoing business relationship, so there's no long-term rapport to worry about either.
    113AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:52
I've never once haggled in my entire life.
    117AnonymousSep 27, 2026 20:54
    Re: #113
The very first purchase I ever made, I haggled.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Mercari does have a ‘price-change / comment’ feature that lets sellers choose whether to entertain price negotiations, but the company has never made haggling mandatory, and no one in the thread produced an official document stating that discounting is ‘a given’ (when >>35 asked for an official source, no answer ever came). The debate split into two main camps: one holding that ‘given the nature of a flea-market platform, haggling is a deeply rooted custom,’ the other arguing that ‘it’s merely a feature that’s available — there’s no obligation to accept it.’ Meanwhile, the claim that ‘you get haggled at because you priced it above market rate’ and the counter that ‘the whole notion of a market rate has no place on a flea-market app to begin with’ talked past each other without ever really connecting. One point readers can easily get wrong: on similar services like Yahoo Flea Market and Rakuma too, whether to accept haggling isn’t governed by platform rules at all — it’s left entirely up to each individual seller. It’s often framed as if it were a blanket ‘Mercari rule,’ but in reality, practice varies seller by seller.

  • Would Dark Yugi win a Shadow Game? 5ch: “Wait, what’s Usogui?”

In a chat thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (general live-commentary board), the topic bounced around fast — from comments watching someone’s first-ever VALORANT stream, to intros for Hololive’s new gacha characters, to the price gap on Blue-Eyes cards from the newest Yu-Gi-Oh! set. But what really got the thread going was a fantasy showdown: “If Dark Yugi and Usogui’s Baku played a Shadow Game, who’d win?” One reply shot back instantly, “Dark Yugi, obviously 😏,” while another asked, “Wait, what’s Usogui?” — unexpectedly exposing just how far apart the two series are in name recognition.

    192AnonymousSep 27, 2026 19:38
    Re: #180
    Wait, what's Usogui?

    Background and Talking Points

Dark Yugi is the alternate persona of Yugi Mutou, the protagonist of Yu-Gi-Oh!, while “Usogui” (literally “Lie Eater”) is the nickname of Baku, the protagonist of the manga of the same name. The two series ran in different eras and different magazines and have no real connection, so this matchup is just the kind of “what if” fantasy debate that regularly pops up on 5ch. The Yu-Gi-Oh! card talk that also caught fire, though, reflects a real-world situation: the new Blue-Eyes card from the latest set can go for as little as around ¥10 in buyback price as an ordinary single, while the same artwork in a low-pull-rate rarity like a secret rare can trade for anywhere from a few thousand to tens of thousands of yen per copy. It’s an everyday occurrence in trading card games for cards featuring the same character to vary wildly in price depending on print run and rarity, and it was surprise at that very price gap that kicked off the conversation in the thread.

On September 27, a man riding JR’s Limited Express Hida started a live-thread on 5channel’s VIP board. It began with back-and-forth about which train departing Osaka he was on and whether his destination was before Takayama, then veered off into how the Hida differs from the Shinano line and the origins of place names like Gero and Ujiyamada. Along the way, posters shared local knowledge that the Shirakawa and Hichisou area often sees service suspensions from heavy rain, and the OP admitted he really wanted to eat the local specialty, hoba miso-marinated meat, once he arrived. Background and Talking Points

The Limited Express Hida connects Nagoya and Osaka with Takayama and Hida-Furukawa. The Shinano also departs from Nagoya, but its route is completely different, so sharing a starting station is about the only thing the two trains have in common. Ujiyamada, a place name that came up in the thread, is the former name of Ise City: it was formed in 1906 when the towns of Uji and Yamada merged, and became today’s Ise City in 1955 after merging with surrounding towns and villages. The Takayama Main Line also runs along the Hida River, and the area around Shirakawa-guchi and Hichisou is well known for frequent suspensions and slowdowns whenever heavy rain hits. Rather than digging into any of this background, though, the thread mostly stuck to riffing on the sound of place names and casual chat along the way, and never really developed into a fact-based discussion.

  • Reincarnated Into the Gundam Universe? 5ch Debates Whether You’d Be Stuck as a Bottom-Tier Pilot

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board (aka “NanJ”) asked: “Even if we got reincarnated into the Gundam universe, wouldn’t we just end up as bottom-tier pilots, like Guncannon pilots?” In the show’s setting, Mobile Suit (MS) pilots are usually elite military officers — second lieutenants fresh out of officer academy — so pessimistic replies piled up fast: “Could guys like us even become soldiers in the first place?” and “We’d be lucky just to get a seat in a mass-produced Ball.” Others pushed back, arguing mass-produced units are smaller targets with better survival odds, and that serving as crew on a battleship might actually be more dangerous. The debate spread further into where ship crews stand, and whether it’d be better to be reborn into the Earth Federation or Zeon.

    Pretty sure it's this

Background and key points of the debate

The thread’s starting premise is that Gundam-universe MS (Mobile Suit) pilots are generally established as officers of second-lieutenant rank or higher, meaning only academy-trained elites get to fly them. But since spin-off games like Gihren’s Greed feature plenty of pilots ranked below second lieutenant, opinions split over whether to go by the original anime’s canon or the games’. Another sticking point was the mass-produced “Ball”: some argued it has strong survival odds as a small, mobile target, while others countered that serving as battleship crew is actually riskier, since one slow call from the captain can take the whole crew down with it. Note that while only one unit of the original Gundam (RX-78) actually saw combat on-screen, the setting also includes several prototype units — the “7 units” mentioned by one commenter is thought to refer to this group of prototypes. All of this is banter about a fictional setting within the anime; it doesn’t involve any real people or events.

  • “I’m a girl but I made yakisoba” post sparks 5ch reaction — “That mayo is AI-generated”

A post titled “I’m a girl but I made yakisoba” appeared on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” livestream-chat board, showing a photo of homemade yakisoba. The dish, apparently Nagoya-style with a thin fried-egg sheet laid on top, drew skepticism before any comments on taste — with posters asking “why hasn’t the mayonnaise lost its shape?” and “is the poster really a woman?” At the same time, part of the thread turned into a genuine cooking discussion, covering how to layer the egg, whether yakisoba even needs egg, and how it pairs with Aichi’s miso-simmered udon — making for a thread that mixed mockery with practical exchange.

    Background and Talking Points

Post titles like “I’m a girl but I did X” are a common format on 5ch’s livestream-chat boards, seemingly designed to draw more replies by revealing the poster’s gender. In this thread too, reply #17 mocked the technique itself, calling it “a pathetic thread that only gets traction because it tacked on ‘I’m a girl.’” As for the cooking method — laying a thin fried-egg sheet over yakisoba — commenters explained it echoes a restaurant technique: frying yakisoba for multiple servings at once, then pouring beaten egg onto a griddle per serving and plating the noodles on top so the egg finishes cooking just as it’s served. This is easily mistaken for omu-soba (omelette-wrapped yakisoba) when attempted at home, which itself became a talking point. The suspicion that the mayonnaise was “AI-generated,” based on its shape, is a typical reflex on anonymous boards to question whether a posted photo is real. Readers should keep in mind that in these photo-post threads, reactions tend to focus less on the food itself and more on the poster’s identity and the authenticity of the image.

  • School Ad’s Claim That ‘No One Is Born With Different Abilities’ Sparks Debate: Nature vs. Nurture

A single line in a school’s advertisement — “there’s no such thing as innate ability differences” — has sparked a debate on 5ch. It appears to be meant as an encouraging message for students facing entrance exams or job hunting, but posters weren’t taking it at face value, and opinions split over just how much genetics shapes intelligence and athletic ability. Citing findings that identical twins raised in different environments ended up with similar academic performance, and pointing to the idea that Shohei Ohtani wouldn’t have found the same success had he chosen a different path, the “environment matters more” camp and the “genetics matters more” camp both dug in, with plenty of sarcasm flying at the cult of effort along the way.

So I guess it's lack of effort that lands you at some no-name school like this one?
    13AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:38
It varies by subject, but some of it is said to come down to genetics.
But openly affirming that risks veering into eugenics territory, so that's frowned upon.
A slogan like 'you can achieve anything through effort' is considered the healthier message, even if it's a bit of a white lie.
    14AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:38

Genetic superiority or inferiority mostly falls within the same range for most people,

    Re: #34
    What matters is genetics.
Intelligence is said to be 80% genetic,
    and physical ability 40%.

It's about whether you can pick the talent you're actually suited for.
If Ohtani had chosen to become a manga artist,
he wouldn't have succeeded no matter the environment.
    29AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:48
That's terrible discrimination against people born with severe intellectual disabilities.
Sure, academic ability isn't assessed the moment you're born, but still…
    32AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:48
In studies on the academic performance of identical twins raised in different environments,
subjects like math apparently show a fairly strong correlation,
though the takeaway is still that environment is the bigger factor.
    33AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:49
When twins were raised in separate environments —
    one rich, one poor —
they're said to have ended up with the same results.
    35AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:49
Of course there's a huge difference, obviously.

    38AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:52
There are tons of ability differences, plain and simple.
The real question is whether you can still put in the effort knowing that.
    39AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:52
Well, of course identical twins share the same genetic factors.
You'd need to compare people born with severe intellectual disabilities against everyone else instead.

    After you're born,
differences do start forming depending on your environment though.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The phrase “ability isn’t innate, it comes down to effort” is commonly used in school settings as a stock line to encourage students, not as a scientific claim. That said, in the field of behavioral genetics, twin studies have built up evidence that some individual differences in intelligence and athletic ability can be explained by genetic factors, with the relative contribution of genes versus environment varying a great deal depending on the type of ability. The twin studies and heritability figures cited in the thread only loosely echo that body of research and shouldn’t be taken as settled academic figures. Some posts also raised the point that saying “there’s no such thing as innate ability differences” risks being insensitive to people born with congenital disabilities — highlighting a gap between educational slogans and how those directly affected might receive them. The thread reached no clear conclusion.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “A school ad drops some real talk!! “There’s no such thing as innate ability differences”.”

  • Dormy Inn’s ¥4,750 Room Sparks Buzz Over Insane Value

A poster shared photos of the ¥4,750 room they stayed in at Dormy Inn, sparking a wave of reactions on “Nanimo Jikkyo G” (a 5channel discussion board). Officially it’s classified as a capsule hotel, but the rooms are fully separated from their neighbors by solid walls, with only the upper bunks partially connected. Commenters also pointed out the free earplugs and the impressively well-appointed communal bath and sauna, and the talk expanded into comparisons with Kaikatsu Club (an internet café chain), love hotels, and capsule hotels in other cities (like Daitoyo in Osaka, Cabinas in Fukuoka, and Wellbe in Nagoya). Opinions split between prioritizing cheapness versus comfort.

Free ice cream is way too good

    Background and Talking Points

Dormy Inn is known as a business hotel chain with communal baths and saunas, and this time the buzz centered on one of its lower-priced, capsule-style rooms. The thread split over how to judge the fact that “it’s officially a capsule hotel, but the rooms are properly walled off from their neighbors” — with some worried about the sense of confinement and others saying it’s not bad at all, more like a secret hideout. The discussion also expanded to cover breakfast being an extra charge (+¥2,000), complaints about Kaikatsu Club’s air conditioning and cleanliness, and the reality of people using love hotels solo, touching on how people choose between different lodging and rest facilities in general. One thing readers could easily misread: this price and experience reflect the poster’s own conditions for a single night’s stay (timing, specific branch, plan), and aren’t necessarily the same at every Dormy Inn location or at every time of year.

  • Nanami Tanabe Reunites With Maimi Yajima and Saki Nakajima After Over a Decade — 5ch Asks: ‘First Time Together Since Their Stage Play, 14 Years Ago?’

Nanami Tanabe (nicknamed “Tanumin”), a former Hello! Project trainee, reunited with Morning Musume.’14’s Maimi Yajima and °C-ute’s Saki Nakajima for the first time in over a decade — and it became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. If this is indeed their first time together since the stage play “Sugar Spot,” in which she played Yajima’s little sister back during her trainee days, thread posters pointed out that it marks roughly 14 years since they last shared a stage. Tanabe went through the trainee program but never passed the Morning Musume. audition, and later was active as a member of ONEPIXCEL. It's all about timing
In Hello! Project, timing matters more than talent or looks

    Background and Talking Points

Hello! Project’s trainee system has long operated by handpicking new-group members from among its trainees. Nanami Tanabe came up through this same trainee program, but never passed the Morning Musume. audition — and every time a new group formed afterward, whether Juice=Juice, Country Girls, or later Kobushi Factory and Tsubaki Factory, fans kept bringing her up and asking why she was never chosen. What split opinion in the thread was whether her departure at the time was her own decision, or simply came down to where the pass line and timing happened to fall. Trainees’ fates hinge not just on talent but on when auditions are held and which groups happen to have open slots — and the view that “in Hello! Project, timing matters more than talent or looks” is one longtime fans have voiced again and again. Whether this reunion was pure coincidence or the continuation of an old bond wasn’t made clear in the thread.

  • Do OGs Only Get Stage Work? 5ch Compares Post-Graduation Careers from Hello! Project, Sakamichi, and AKB

A thread on 5ch caught fire over the idea that female idols — not just from Hello! Project, but AKB48, Nogizaka46, and others — tend to see their post-graduation work skew heavily toward stage productions. One spark for the discussion: Suzuki Airi’s casting in Otsuka Pharmaceutical’s “Benza Block Blue” commercial, a slot that has historically gone to talent from Amuse, Nogizaka46, and Keyakizaka46, making the pick of a Hello! Project alum feel like a real departure. Posters also pointed to her role in the film “Sakuya Yareta Kamo” (“I Could’ve Killed Him Last Night”), opening October 23, and to how much screen work Stardust Promotion talent tends to land, framing the debate around how differences in each agency’s “sales pitch” power shape careers after graduation.

Thing is, with musicals you've got a shot at decent productions even stuck at a crap agency, but with straight plays (non-musical theater) you're basically limited to no-name ensemble casts or guest spots with tiny troupes.

    Re: #16
Every major theater troupe has gotten cozy with the big agencies at this point
    28AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:26
If you want film and TV work, transferring to Stardust actually gives you a shot.
Case in point, Momoiro Clover Z's Tamai is currently in the "Bayside Shakedown" movie.
With Stardust you can land film roles while still active.

    Re: #28
Is it really that good though?
Even Hayami Akari, who's gorgeous and went full-time actress, only got this far.
Her career high being a ramen commercial, come on…
    29AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:27
If you can get into Cube or Mitani's agency, you get a shot at good stage plays and TV/film work, but transferring there isn't easy.
    33AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:29
    Re: #29
Nogizaka46's Inoue Sayuri moved to Mitani's agency but it hasn't panned out
    35AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:31
If you're going from idol to actress, Sakamichi (Nogizaka/Keyaki/Hinatazaka) is the surefire route.
Pull it off right and you'll land more drama roles than young actresses from the big talent agencies.
    39AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:34
    Re: #35
Sakamichi girls are basically Sony actresses.
Though the biggest success story is Ikuta, who actually left.

Katayose Ryota (co-starred in a drama)
Kazuhara Ryuto (announced a collab track)
Yagi Yusei (co-starred in a drama)
Yoshino Hokuto (co-starred in a film, announced a collab track)

Airi's got a real knack for crossing paths with LDH vocalists

Film work is hard to come by in general, but she's landed solo lead roles and major parts in movies plus TV drama slots too, so she's in a good position.

    That's for the guys though
Stardust dominates when it comes to actors
Taiga drama leads might belong to Stardust forever at this rate

Wouldn't having a member succeed after transferring actually work as a track record though?

Sakamichi itself could really use a Nikaido Fumi-caliber talent of its own soon

    Wasn't this about female idols?
This is supposed to be an answer to "all they get is stage work"
But the answer here is about having non-stage work

    Well, there's Netflix now too
Actresses you'd never see on regular broadcast TV end up playing the lead there

Benza Block Blue has historically gone to Amuse, Nogizaka46, and Keyakizaka46 talent
Airi landing that slot is a big deal
    61AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:45
Stardust and Amuse never pick up Akimoto-produced group talent (AKB48/Sakamichi-affiliated idols)
even though Amuse is short on actresses

There's actually someone at Stardust who went from being an unpopular AKB member to an actress
She's been in everything from Ultraman to morning dramas

Feels like Sakamichi doesn't land that much work
Sony itself isn't exactly great at pitching its talent either
Yamashita and Yoda both keep getting stuck with supporting roles
Shiraishi ought to be getting bigger parts by now too
    72AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:58
    Re: #69
Shiraishi gets to play the lead in prime-time (golden-time) slots, that's plenty good already
    71AnonymousSep 27, 2026 16:57
Sakamichi members are undeniably strong on stage though
They land Imperial Theater lead roles like it's nothing, and it's an easy catch with Gekidan Shinkansen or Otona Keikaku too

She's ambitious and strong-willed, so she seems to genuinely be into acting
    92AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:10
There are Super Sentai alumni like Yamada Yuki who don't show up much in dramas or films but never run out of stage work
but that kind of career doesn't really get respected, does it
    95AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:12
    Re: #92
There are stage actors who didn't break into dramas until they hit middle age and now they're everywhere as supporting cast
but yeah, if you can't make it in screen work there's a ceiling either way

    94AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:12
Even within Sakamichi, it's not all about popularity — isn't there anyone who got picked purely for their acting chops?
    99AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:15
    Re: #94
Nakamura Reno, who went from the understudy ranks to getting picked for Koichi's "Endless SHOCK," — you could say that wasn't just riding on popularity

Background and key points of the discussion

The “Benza Block Blue” commercial is a flagship campaign for Otsuka Pharmaceutical, and the role has historically gone to talent from major agencies — Amuse, Nogizaka46, Keyakizaka46. The thread rates the fact that Hello! Project’s Suzuki Airi broke into that lineup as a “big deal.” The real throughline of the thread, though, is the structural point that idols’ post-graduation work skews toward stage productions (musicals and straight plays): posters split between noting that Sakamichi groups are strong on Imperial Theater-caliber stages but haven’t yet produced a standout screen lead, versus Stardust Promotion, where talent like Tamai Shiori can land film work even while still active. No one in the thread pushed back on the underlying premise that stage work is a “lesser fallback,” and the fact that stage work itself is a stable line of employment went unmentioned — worth keeping in mind as a reader.
