  • Shin Sakagami’s “Why Can’t Idols Get Married?” Remark Sparks Debate

Actor Shin Sakagami’s remarks on the October 5 broadcast of Kansai TV/Fuji TV’s “Shunkan LIVE Toretate!” sparked discussion on 5ch after he questioned idol marriage bans, asking “Why can’t idols get married?” and “If you want to be a top idol, do you have to give up your human rights?” Most posts in the thread pointed out that marriage isn’t actually banned — it’s just that idols who marry tend to lose popularity — while others noted that pro athletes also face activity restrictions depending on their sport, arguing that “occupational restrictions aren’t unique to idols.” Still, some posts turned the question back on the idol business model itself, splitting the debate between “outright prohibition” and “commercial risk.”

Shin Sakagami: “Why can’t idols get married?” “If you want to be a top idol, do you have to give up your human rights?”

Actor and TV personality Shin Sakagami appears on today’s (the 5th) broadcast of Kansai TV/Fuji TV’s “Shunkan LIVE Toretate!” (weekdays, 1:50 PM).

The “No Holding Back! Sakagami & Tetsuo’s News Cut-Through” segment with journalist Tetsuo Suzuki airs for the first time in about a month.

It's not that it's forbidden — fans just switch to someone else.

    It's because that's what they're selling.
If you're fine with losing popularity, go ahead and get married.

    Re: #96
They could just start their own idol group where marriage is totally fine.
But as long as they're stuck somewhere bound by that unwritten rule, it seems impossible…

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The “no dating/no marriage” rule for idols is usually not a legal regulation but a self-imposed restriction based on agency contracts and unwritten industry norms. Sakagami’s phrase “giving up your human rights” sparked discussion, but the majority view in the thread took a contract-based framing: nobody is forcing idols into this, and they’re free to quit if they don’t like it. Commenters pointed to pro baseball players being restricted from private activities like skiing or cycling even in the off-season, suggesting that “idols aren’t the only industry with occupational restrictions.” However, unlike other professions, idols’ popularity itself is their source of income, so a dating or marriage scandal tends to directly trigger fans leaving. Sakagami’s question highlighted the issue of how to interpret the difference between “formal prohibition” and “commercial self-restraint,” though the thread itself never reached a consensus.

  • Johnny’s Fan Loses the Juice=Juice Ticket War, Joins Hello! Project Fan Club Instead — Welcome to the Family

A YouTuber who openly identifies as a fan of Johnny’s (Starto Entertainment) talent reported in a video that after failing to get tickets to a Juice=Juice concert, they joined the Hello! Project fan club — and it became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. The thread was a mix of welcome and bewilderment at the idea of “someone whose name nobody even knows” joining as a newcomer, and it also reignited debate over whether it was fair for Beyooooonds and Tsubaki Factory fans to push their own groups on him in a previous video. The gap in how strongly people feel new fans should “study up” on past material surfaced once again with this report of him joining the fan club.

    Re: #59
That applies to Beyooooonds and Tsubaki Factory too

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The basis for this topic is a video posted by a YouTuber who openly identifies as a fan of Johnny’s (Starto Entertainment) talent, reporting that after failing to get tickets to a Juice=Juice concert, they joined the Hello! Project fan club. What split the thread was the reaction to a previous video in which Beyooooonds and Tsubaki Factory fans had recommended their own groups to this newcomer — Juice=Juice fans expressed discomfort (“he hasn’t even been to a Juice show yet”), while others defended it, saying “even just getting your group’s name known has value.” In Hello! Project, where multiple groups coexist, there’s long been a pattern of fans from different groups keeping an eye on each other over the recruitment of new fans, and this exchange is an extension of that same dynamic. The thread also touched on the question of how much past footage new fans should be expected to “study up” on — worth noting as background beyond the thread itself is that the spread of video streaming now lets fans revisit past performances without ever having attended in person, which lowers the barrier to entry for new fans even as it creates a different worry: “where do I even start watching?”

  • Juice=Juice’s Off-Duty Outfits Spark Buzz Over Insanely High Jeans Rate

On a 5ch thread where Hello! Project fans gather, multiple off-duty outfit photos of Juice=Juice and other members were posted, and the sheer number of them wearing jeans became a talking point. While some posters made styling requests like “I wish they’d roll up the cuffs” and “please, no more cheap-looking distressed denim,” others praised the jeans themselves, saying things like “it really shows off their great figures” and “jeans actually look more stylish.” As the chat spread, posters brought up how jeans originally started as workwear for coal miners, along with an anecdote about an old-guard singer from the folk-music-boom era who reportedly hated the idea of wearing jeans on the Kohaku Uta Gassen (Japan’s biggest New Year’s Eve music broadcast) — turning the thread into a broader chat about the place of jeans as a fashion item.

    Background and Talking Points

This thread kicked off when someone compiled off-duty outfit photos of members who’d attended a Hello! Project event. Checking out idols’ everyday clothes has long been a favorite pastime among Hello! Project fans, complete with a whole culture of parsing outfit styles and guessing brands. This time, it just so happened that a lot of members were wearing jeans, which sent the conversation down the path of “why is everyone in jeans?” The reactions weren’t unanimous — some pushed back with complaints like “please skip the cheap-looking distressed denim,” while others praised jeans for “showing off a good figure.” The discussion expanded further from there, touching on how jeans originated as workwear for miners rather than clothing meant to look refined, and how, as denim spread into youth culture alongside the folk music boom, there were reportedly old-guard singers who hated the idea of artists wearing jeans on the Kohaku Uta Gassen. What started as simple outfit commentary ended up drifting into a broader chat about the origins of jeans as a fashion item.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread「Juice=Juice Members’ Terrifyingly High Jeans Rate lol」.

  • Rosy Chronicle Concert Venue Reeks — 5ch: “It Smelled So Bad I Couldn’t Even Form a Review”

On October 4, 2026, Hello! Project group Rosy Chronicle (Rojikuro) played a show at a standing-only live house in Saitama (capacity 350). On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, a thread took off after a post complained that the smell in the audience was so bad that “even though it was supposed to be a fun show, I can’t even put my feelings into words.” The topic didn’t stop at a single complaint — discussion branched into comparisons with other groups’ shows like Juice=Juice, Tsubaki Factory, and trainee shows, and opinion split over whether the smell came from the fans’ hygiene or the venue’s layout. Female fans also voiced fear of “ending up next to some awful-smelling otaku,” and complaints about odor from both men and women ended up colliding.

What I learned after hitting underground idol shows at 13 venues over about a month and a half: Hello! Project shows are 1000 times smellier.

I used to think I was just oversensitive to smell since I was always complaining about the stink at every show, but I realized I almost never said the word "smelly" at underground shows. Sure, the venues themselves can smell since they're underground, but the otaku there aren't smelly at all — is that because they're close to their oshi and more careful about it, or are Hello! otaku just abnormal…

Women are pretty sensitive to smell

    Background and Points of Debate

The claim raised in the thread that “2-nonenal is the main component of old-person smell” is itself a compound generally recognized as a body-odor component formed from oxidized skin oil, and it’s presented here as scientifically grounded. On the other hand, eyewitness accounts like “a non-paying customer farted” or “the person next to me soiled themselves” have no way of being verified beyond the poster’s own word — they remain nothing more than individual testimony on an anonymous message board. Within the thread, opinion is split between those who frame this as “a problem specific to Hello! Project shows” and those who blame “the venue conditions — standing-only, 350 capacity, in Saitama” — and no conclusion has been reached on which is the main cause. There’s also a comparison claiming it’s “smellier than underground idol shows,” but it’s worth noting this is limited to one poster’s personal experience and isn’t a rigorous comparative survey of Hello! Project as a whole against other scenes. Female fans also brought up the smell of makeup, so the odor issue isn’t confined to one gender — it grew into a broader conversation about venue crowding and hygiene management in general.

  • Juice=Juice’s New Radio Show Debuts — 5ch: “Didn’t Even Dent the Trends”

The first episode of Nippon Broadcasting System’s new show “Juice=Juice Juicy Talk” aired on October 4 from 9:00 to 9:30 PM. The program features Juice=Juice members taking turns appearing to share updates on their activities and behind-the-scenes talk with a different flavor than what fans see onstage; the announcement on the group’s official X account drew 347 likes. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, discussion centered on the fact that the promotional hashtags were split between “#JuiceTalk” and “#StayingHydrated” (a playful nod tying “hydration” to the group’s name, Juice=Juice), as well as the fact that the show never trended on X after airing — with some fans chalking that up to the short 30-minute time slot, while others dismissed that explanation as anti-fans nitpicking.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Juice=Juice is a Hello! Project group formed in 2013, and having their own radio show is one way to boost their exposure. “Juicy Talk” airs Sundays from 9:00 to 9:30 PM — a shorter slot than late-night programs — which makes it harder for posts about it to pile up on X and puts it at a disadvantage when it comes to trending. Right after the broadcast, some thread posters pointed out that it hadn’t trended, but another reply pushed back, noting that the group hit #1 on the trends when they first started appearing on TV — suggesting that trending (or not) can’t simply be used as a measure of popularity. The fact that promotion ran on two separate hashtags — the main “#JuiceTalk” and the episode-only bonus tag “#StayingHydrated” — also appears to be one reason the first episode’s announcement caused some confusion and inconsistent usage among fans.

  • Does K-pop Have a Universally Known Classic? 5ch Debates

The thread’s original poster argued that “K-pop never managed to produce a truly universal, hum-along classic like ‘Gangnam Style.’” Some pushed back, pointing to BTS’s “Dynamite” and ROSÉ & Bruno Mars’s “APT.” as proof of plenty of reach, while others cited how songs by Miyuki Nakajima and Shinji Tanimura are known across generations in the Chinese-speaking world, arguing K-pop still has no equivalent. The discussion rolled on without ever sorting out that “global smash hit,” “name recognition in Japan,” and “cross-generational reach” are three different yardsticks.

There's not really much from just the last decade or so that gets listened to across generations anyway. It'll only happen decades from now, once today's young people are old and their kids start listening to the "old songs" — that's how a handful of cross-generational songs will finally emerge. Today's 60- and 70-somethings aren't exactly listening to Mrs. GREEN APPLE or YOASOBI

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The core of this thread’s conflict came down to people using different definitions of “classic.” “Gangnam Style” set a singular, record-breaking global streaming milestone back in 2012, and some posters wanted that same scale of reach, while others argued that songs like BTS’s “Dynamite” and “Butter,” or ROSÉ & Bruno Mars’s “APT.,” are plenty widespread within their generation. The reception of Miyuki Nakajima and Shinji Tanimura in the Chinese-speaking world is also rooted in anecdotes about their songs spreading through unauthorized covers rather than under their own names — a different context from official popularity surveys, and another reason the discussion kept talking past itself. On top of that, “KPOP Demon Hunters,” which came up in the thread, is a Netflix animated film made in the US, a separate venture from Korea’s own revenue structure — a distinction that never got sorted out before being folded into the argument.

  • Hello! Project Graduates’ Second Careers — Are Tsuji and Fujimoto the Only Success Stories?

A discussion broke out on 5ch about what happens to members after they graduate from Hello! Project. It started with a post saying, “I wish we could do something about this hopeless trend where graduating feels like the end of the road,” which sparked a wave of replies pointing out that only a handful of members from certain generations — like Tsuji Nozomi, Fujimoto Miki, and Suzuki Airi — have managed to keep working in entertainment. The thread split between a structural view that “if you weren’t popular as an idol, switching careers won’t make you popular either,” and the opinion that “it’s fine to just live a normal life after graduating.”

Can we do something about this hopeless trend where graduating from Hello! Project feels like the end of the road?
    3AnonymousOct 4, 2026 14:24

Background and key points of this discussion

Tsuji Nozomi and Fujimoto Miki debuted with Morning Musume and belong to a generation that even performed at Kohaku, NHK’s year-end song special, continuing to appear in variety shows and photo books after graduating. Generations from Juice=Juice and Angerme onward, by contrast, have centered their activity on fan-club-oriented shows, a structure the thread pointed to as making it harder to reach general-audience recognition. Opinions split between the view that it’s fine to “just live a normal life” after graduating, and the view that a lack of second-career success makes the group look hopeless — with an underlying assumption surfacing that “those who weren’t popular during their idol years won’t become popular after switching careers” either. Note: some posts touching on personal lives or appearances amounted to baseless speculation or personal attacks, so the article has omitted them.

  • AKB48’s Momoka Ito Locked In for Third Straight Center Spot — First Since Maeda Atsuko, 16 Years Ago

AKB48’s 69th single (releasing February 24, 2027) will feature Momoka Ito as center for a third consecutive release. This marks the first time anyone has served as sole center for three straight singles since Maeda Atsuko did it roughly 16 years ago — and even her predecessor’s two-in-a-row streak was itself the first since Watanabe Mayu (“Mayuyu”) 14 years prior. Newcomers Narita Kahina and Morikawa Yu made their first-ever senbatsu (selected main-lineup) appearances. On the forum, many posts praised Ito’s individual momentum, while others pushed back, arguing “there’s no one drawing attention besides Ito” and “what’s even the point of being a group,” pointing to thin depth across the rest of the lineup. Reactions were split.

    Re: #56
    Right, lol
Something as small as AKB center is beneath Yuiyui, lol

Background and Key Points of Debate

Center positions in AKB48 typically rotate frequently based on general elections and single-by-single senbatsu (selected lineup) decisions, and only a handful of members — Watanabe Mayu and Maeda Atsuko among them — have ever held the sole center spot across consecutive releases. This latest three-in-a-row run is, as the thread notes, the first of its kind since Maeda Atsuko roughly 16 years ago, and the numbers bear out just how unusual this casting is by historical standards. Where opinion in the thread split was over whether to separate praise for Ito individually from an assessment of the group as a whole: posts noting “there’s no one besides Ito drawing attention” sat alongside counterarguments that “plenty of members are leveling up visually.” This taps into a long-running concern around AKB48’s tendency toward a “fixed senbatsu,” and it’s worth reading carefully so as not to conflate Ito’s individual talent with an evaluation of the group’s selection management.

  • Illegal Uploads Are Enough for Hello! Project Fans? 5ch: ‘You Could Call Them At-Home-Only Idols’

On the Hello! Project board of 5ch, a thread blew up over fans who don’t spend a dime on their favorite groups but still keep tabs on members’ skills and activities through illegally uploaded videos. It kicked off with a post claiming “there are people out there judging idols’ skills off pirated clips,” and soon posters were pointing out that how much content you can enjoy from home — without ever going to an event — varies a lot by group. Juice=Juice came up repeatedly as a group with plenty of at-home-friendly content, while others were said to be enjoyable only if you actually show up to events. Counterarguments pushed back, too: “in an era where you can watch for free, of course some fans won’t pay.” The exchange exposed a real divide in how fans feel about the whole culture of paying to support idols.

The "skills everyone talks about" in the thread title probably isn't meant as a compliment, is it

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

On 5ch boards devoted to Hello! Project idols, it’s long been noted that some fans watch illegally uploaded footage of concerts and TV appearances and then discuss members’ skills based on that. Juice=Juice, which came up repeatedly in the thread, is seen as putting out more content on YouTube and social media than other groups, making it easier to follow without ever attending an event. Groups that put more weight on live performances and goods-related perks, on the other hand, are said to be harder to keep up with for fans who mainly stay home. The thread split into two camps: one that criticizes watching illegal videos as a symbol of fans who won’t pay, and another that argues it’s unfair to blame fans for not paying when there’s a free way to get the same information. Underlying it all is a temperature gap between the “goes to events” camp and the “stays home” camp within the Hello! Project fanbase. Note that posts asserting specific spending amounts for real public figures, as well as the exchanges of personal attacks over looks and finances, lack solid grounding and have been omitted from this article.

*This article is an excerpt and summary based on the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Ookami: “I don’t feel Hello! Project is worth paying for, but I still watch illegal videos and talk about their skills” / “If I’m not interested in a group, I follow it through illegal videos, and if there aren’t any, my interest fades”.”

  • Morning Musume’s Regional Shows: Matinees Sell Out, But Some Say ‘Evening Shows Are Empty’

Reports that the matinee performances of Morning Musume’s autumn tour sold out in regional cities like Aichi, Fukuoka, and Sendai became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. Even though these are small regional venues (capacity of roughly 1,600), some were surprised at the unusual turnout — but that was quickly met with pushback: “the evening shows are empty” and “they probably only sold the front section and closed off the second floor,” sparking a debate over whether it really counts as a sellout. The thread also got lively comparing drawing power with other Hello! Project groups like Juice=Juice and ANGERME.

Aichi Forest Hall matinee: sold out
Fukuoka Civic Hall matinee: sold out
Sendai Sun Plaza matinee: nearly sold out

    Re: #20
If the evening show is empty, then overall it's still empty, right?
Quit cherry-picking just the matinee and calling it a sellout.
    29AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:38
    Re: #20
Fukuoka and Sendai probably have the third floor closed off anyway.
Fukuoka might even go front-rows-only and close the second floor too, if we're unlucky.
    40AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:47
Not being able to sell out the evening show is usually only an issue in far-off places like Morioka.
    Re: #20
So even a "secondary hub" candidate city can't sell out the evening show either, huh…
    22AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:30
There's no way the matinee sells out but the evening show is empty.
Doing two shows in a day is the unusual part — normally filling just one show would be plenty.
    24AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:31
    Re: #22
Juice=Juice would sell out both the matinee and evening shows in a snap, you know?
    23AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:31
Panda: "Ahh, glad I'm in Morning Musume."
    26AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:31
Juice=Juice gets slammed if they don't instantly sell out both the matinee and evening shows.
    31AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:40
"Juice" can't even fill half the house.

    Juice is in tears lmaooooooooo
    32AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:43
    Re: #31
Well, at least in cities where both groups tour, I'd bet they're both selling over half the house without exception.
    33AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:43
    Re: #24
Say that after they've actually done it.
    35AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:44
    Re: #33
Depends on whether they even get the chance to try, really.
    34AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:44
Say what you want, Morning Musume still has real drawing power.
They've just lost some of their old momentum compared to their peak — their popularity is actually stable.
It only feels like a dark age because there was a time they sold even better.
It's just like the Yomiuri Giants — in 2nd place but still giving off an "it's all over" vibe.
The fact their MVs still have strong first-day numbers proves casual fans and DDs (idol fans who follow multiple groups at once) are still interested.
    38AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:45
    Re: #34
Their MV first-day numbers aren't even that strong anymore, are they?
    36AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:44
Of course Morning Musume is strong in Shizuoka — it's a double homecoming there.
Even I, who argues Juice=Juice should go all-in on hall shows, think Shizuoka has to go to Morning Musume.

    Re: #36
Though Juice=Juice could realistically aim for Act City Hamamatsu, you know.
    41AnonymousOct 4, 2026 13:49
    Re: #39
    That's only like a 2,000 capacity.
If you're gonna talk domes and Kohaku, at least aim as high as ECOPA.

    Re: #41
In Shizuoka, Juice=Juice's only actual track record is at Marinart, though.

    Re: #38
The first-day numbers really are strong.
Not that different from Juice=Juice right after "Moremi" went viral.
It just doesn't grow over the week though.
    Really is first-day-only.
    47AnonymousOct 4, 2026 14:00
    Re: #45
It used to be standard that they'd blow other groups away, at least on day one.
Actually, Juice=Juice hasn't put out a single proper new-song MV since "Moremi."
    51AnonymousOct 4, 2026 14:06
A sellout in Fukuoka means attendance is at least trending upward.
Things were genuinely rough in Kyushu and Sendai after Eripon and Ayumin graduated.
Thank goodness for the 18th generation.

    Re: #51
But checking Pia (the ticket site), the evening show is still empty, isn't it?
    Re: #54
And wasn't Nagoya's evening show also empty, with the fourth floor closed?
    53AnonymousOct 4, 2026 14:08
Don't they avoid scheduling Juice=Juice shows on the same days as Morning Musume's?

There were otaku on X worrying that once Makino graduates, Aichi won't sell out anymore either.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

A “sold out” label for a regional hall show doesn’t always mean every single seat is full — it can also reflect a management decision to sell only the front section (a practice known as “mae-fami,” or front-rows-only release) or to close off upper floors and shrink the total seat count in the first place. That means a sold-out matinee doesn’t necessarily line up with the evening show or with attendance across the whole venue. The 2026 attendance figures cited in the thread (Nogizaka46 at 500,000, AKB48 at 170,000, Morning Musume at 150,000, and so on) aren’t official numbers either — they’re 5ch-user estimates, so readers should note that the calculation method and time period behind them are unclear. Comparing drawing power between groups is a perennial topic among Hello! Project fans, but it’s worth keeping in mind that these figures tend to get stated as fact even when their sourcing is vague.

※This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Morning Musume apparently sold out both the matinee and evening shows at a regional venue, which is rare.”
