  • US IGN blasts: ‘PlayStation’s future has never looked bleaker’ — 5ch: ‘Let’s be real, they’re done for’

A US IGN opinion piece points to the Metacritic score of Insomniac Games’ new release, ‘Marvel’s Wolverine,’ dropping below 80 as evidence that “PlayStation’s future has never looked bleaker.” The piece is written by a longtime admirer of Sony’s story-focused, single-player-driven approach, and comes against a backdrop of headwinds for the PlayStation camp — including the early shutdown of the competitive shooter ‘Concord,’ studio restructuring, and the end of Sony’s partnership with Hideo Kojima. On 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (Geha) board, reactions split between those agreeing with the assessment and those pushing back by pointing to Sony’s strong financial results.

PlayStation’s Future Has Never Looked Bleaker (PlayStation’s future has never looked more clouded over.)

It’s hard to imagine how PlayStation leadership felt watching so many critics shrug with indifference and walk away from Insomniac’s ‘Wolverine.’

A Metacritic score under 80 is, as anyone in the AAA space knows, considered a “disaster.” It surely isn’t fun for Sony either, but for a company its size, it would be easy enough to write off as “an uncharacteristic one-off mistake.”

*This piece is an opinion column by Matt Purslow, who has experienced every PlayStation generation from day one since the PS2, and who genuinely loves the story-driven single-player adventures Sony's studios have championed for years.

    Lol, that disclaimer

Yeah, if you're a PS fan who genuinely loves Sony's story-driven single-player games, of course you'd want to complain once Insomniac goes downhill and Sony cuts PSYSINT loose too.
Actually, if you read the back half of the article, the writer sounds pretty disappointed that cutting ties with Kojima means no new game from him either.
    8AnonymousSep 12, 2026 20:06
They probably just want to quit single-player games since they don't turn a profit.

Sorry, but Sony's games had something special back in the PS1 era, but by the PS2 era they already had one foot in mediocrity.
Game media never bothered learning any game philosophy and just kept heaping praise purely because the graphics kept improving, so Sony has been living under that delusion
    for 20 years straight.

Even now, the top criterion for GOTY is basically 'big-budget with good graphics,' right?
That's exactly why I'm calling you all shallow.

What's even stranger is that even though their own earnings look great, you never hear anything good coming out of their affiliated companies, and more and more of them keep pulling away from PlayStation.

That's because PlayStation basically equals Japanese third-party publishers —
foreign developers and foreign studios are just a bonus on the side.

Xbox fanboys aren't Japanese, so they desperately trash Sony's Western-style games,
but honestly nobody here cares, and domestically Onimusha would outsell them anyway lol.
They rag on whatever random Sony title, or get smug over Kojima acting all Western-wannabe lol.

PS users only care about Japanese third-party titles — that's the only thing the earnings actually reflect.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This piece is an opinion column by IGN writer Matt Purslow, sparked directly by Insomniac Games’ new release ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ dropping below 80 on Metacritic — a score range widely considered a “disaster” for a AAA title by the industry’s own standards. The backdrop includes several years of news around Sony’s first-party studios: the early end of the competitive shooter ‘Concord,’ the dissolution of development studio PSYSINT, and the end of Sony’s partnership with Hideo Kojima. Where the thread splits is over whether this “bleak future” narrative squares with Sony’s own financial results, which look strong on paper. Some posters suggested that “domestic third-party software is what’s propping up the earnings,” but it’s worth flagging for readers that this is speculation within the thread, not a figure backed by the article or any official filings.

  • Pokaos Calls Out Keiji Channel by Name — 5ch: “Trash vs. Trash, Let Them Destroy Each Other”

On September 12, 2026, gaming YouTuber Pokaos called out Keiji Channel by name on X (formerly Twitter), criticizing him for “taking sponsored deals from Sony and gushing over PlayStation first-party titles as ‘masterpieces,’ only to turn around and start bashing them once the Kojima controversy hit and Sony’s fortunes soured” and for “inadequate PR/ad disclosure that amounts to stealth marketing.” The remarks became a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry (“Geha”) board. Beyond debating whether the criticism itself was fair, posters were split on whether it’s legitimate for the anonymous Pokaos to attack the face-revealing Keiji, and on the broader issue of gaming YouTubers running “position-talk” (biased takes dressed up as neutral commentary) as a business model.

    14AnonymousSep 12, 2026 19:00
    Today's Pokaos:

"Keiji Channel is seriously trash. He took sponsored deals from Sony and went overboard calling PS first-party titles and third-party exclusives 'masterpieces' over and over — but the second the Kojima controversy hit or Sony started struggling, he jumped right in to bash them. And his PR/ad disclosures are so inadequate it's basically stealth marketing. This guy doesn't love PlayStation — he just loves the money and sponsorships PlayStation gives him."

"With Keiji Channel, whenever he criticizes (gives an opinion on) a game, he immediately praises like twice as many other things about it and goes full defense mode, lol. If that's how it's gonna go, I always think, just don't say the criticism in the first place.
    Keiji Channel… lol"

Background and Key Points of This Debate

As background, suspicion has often been raised within the gaming YouTuber scene about corporate sponsorship deals, inadequate PR/ad disclosure, and “position-talk” — creators who pose as neutral while effectively championing one particular platform. It’s in that context that Pokaos called out Keiji Channel by name, accusing him of stealth marketing and flip-flopping. What split the thread wasn’t so much the substance of the criticism itself, but whether someone who criticizes anonymously without showing their face has any credibility — pushback against using anonymity as a shield clashed with the counterargument that the content of the criticism should be judged on its own merits. Some posts claim both have clashed with other streamers before, but that’s just hearsay from 5ch, so its accuracy can’t be confirmed.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “Geha”) thread “Pokaos Goes All Out Bashing Keiji Channel.”

  • Sony’s PlayStation Monitor Sparks Controversy Over Bezel Shape Mismatch Between Ads and Real Product

Sony’s official monitor for PlayStation has come under fire from overseas users, who say the bezel (frame) shape looks different between the promotional images and the actual retail unit. On 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry” (Geha) board, a thread debating this discrepancy has drawn mixed reactions. Some argue that “promo CG looking different from the real thing happens with every manufacturer,” while others are harsher, saying “even the corner curves looking like a totally different shape is just too much” and “this could actually turn into a lawsuit.” Some posters even shared actual product photos for comparison.

    Re: #95
Apparently every monitor maker does this,
    and it's not illegal.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Controversies over advertising for game console peripherals aren’t unusual — in the past, exaggerated spec claims around products like the VAIO and the PSP launch have drawn similar criticism. This time the trigger is that the bezel’s shape (corner roundness and thickness) looks different between the official promotional images for Sony’s PlayStation-branded monitor and the actual retail unit. Opinion in the thread split between defenders — “some difference between promotional CG and the real product is normal for any manufacturer” — and critics who said “having even the corner roundness look like a totally different shape goes too far,” with some posters later sharing actual photos for comparison. There were also comments noting that “every monitor maker does this and it’s not illegal,” so whether this actually rises to legal “false advertising” was never resolved within the thread — it’s worth noting this remains just opinion on 5ch, not a settled conclusion.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry [Geha]) thread “[Sad News] Sony Accused of False Advertising on PlayStation Monitor, Sparks Massive Backlash Overseas lol lol lol lol“.

  • Director Kojima’s New Game PHYSINT Forced Back to the Drawing Board After Losing Access to the Decima Engine and More

It’s become a hot topic on 5ch’s game-hardware board (Geha) that director Hideo Kojima’s new title ‘PHYSINT’ has lost access to the Decima Engine and Sony Pictures’ motion-capture facilities it had been using, forcing development to start over from scratch. Both were development infrastructure provided by Sony for the ‘Death Stranding’ series, so losing them effectively means a full project reset. On the thread, opinions clashed over pessimistic takes like “it won’t be finished for at least five years,” comparisons to past contract terminations with Konami and Google (Stadia), and speculation about a possible move to the Xbox camp.

Cut loose by Konami, then cut loose by Sony. If Microsoft cuts him loose too after this, don't you think you'd have to admit there's something wrong with Kojima's approach? If a backer is going to fund you long-term, you either need to deliver an explosive hit or hand over exclusive sales rights that help move hardware — and if you can't do that, you finish quickly and keep the funding costs down. If he had those basics down, I don't think he'd keep getting cut loose.

Death Stranding is genuinely a well-made, good game, and it's popular and sold decently and got good reviews, but business-wise it seems to have barely broken even. Death Stranding 2 might even be running at a loss. Making a good game doesn't automatically mean everything's fine.

    Re: Re: #89
Sigh… Is everyone forgetting he also got cut loose by Google? Does that not count because it was just Stadia shutting down? But if this time it's the same story — cut loose because they gave up on PS6 — then it all lines up, doesn't it? And Microsoft picking him up afterward matches the pattern too!

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

As an independent studio, Kojima Productions has moved between major platform holders for funding and technical partnerships — from Konami, to Sony, to (as speculated) Microsoft. The Decima Engine is technology from Sony’s Guerrilla Games, and the motion-capture facilities were also provided by Sony Pictures, so losing access to both isn’t just an equipment swap — it’s closer to losing the very foundation of the development pipeline. The thread split between those who see this as “a fatal blow to development” and those who see it as “temporary turbulence from a platform switch,” with the latter camp pointing to a possible link with Xbox’s next-generation console concept, “Helix.” That said, details and timing for Helix itself remain unconfirmed, so this stays firmly in speculation territory even within the thread. It’s also worth noting that the original Death Stranding itself took several years to complete as a major project, so a flat “five years from now” figure isn’t confirmed information either.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5channel (Hardware/Industry, “Geha”) thread “Director Kojima’s new game PHYSINT forced to rebuild from scratch after losing access to the Desima engine and Sony Pictures’ motion-capture.”

  • Isn’t PC, Xbox, and Switch 2 Enough?” — Opinions Split on Console Choices

A thread titled “Isn’t it fine to just have PC, Xbox, and Switch 2?” on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board sparked a debate over console choices. Replies raised price concerns like “Xbox costs 100,000 yen, who’s buying one at this point?”, along with comments on GTA6 such as “it’s basically a PS5 title” and “PS5 gets censored so I’ll play it on Series X.” Opinions also split over whether choosing Xbox counts as a “compromise,” with those prioritizing value for money going back and forth against those prioritizing exclusive titles.

Once you own both PS5 and Series X, you barely end up turning the PS5 on anymore

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Threads like this are a staple of 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, repeatedly popping up to compare the market share and pricing of PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. Xbox sells in much smaller numbers in Japan than other platforms, and the “100,000 yen” figure mentioned in the replies appears to refer to the street price of the Xbox Series X hardware, though it is not an official up-to-date price. The comments about GTA6 being “basically a PS5 title” and “getting censored on PS5” are likewise just posters’ speculation and personal impressions — this thread alone doesn’t confirm whether multiplatform support or content differences between versions have been officially announced ahead of release. The debate split over whether choosing Xbox counts as a “compromise,” with those who prioritize price differences and those who prioritize exclusive software lineups reading the situation differently.

  • SIE-owned studios keep shutting down — 5ch: “Hardware’s next on the chopping block”

Under SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment), reports of studio restructuring and canceled projects keep piling up: following the 2024 closures of London Studio and Firewalk Studios, we’ve now seen the shutdowns of Bluepoint Games and Dark Outlaw Games, a scaled-back rollout of physical discs, and the cancellation of a project led by Hideo Kojima. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, posts mocking the sheer number of these “cuts” piled up, while opinions split between those questioning why the company would shrink its operations amid reportedly strong earnings, and others pushing back with data showing the division’s overall headcount has actually grown even after the reductions.

SIE is shifting toward actively backing Chinese and Korean games

Background and key points of this discussion

Since shutting down its Japan Studio in 2021, SIE has repeatedly restructured its portfolio of studios, including acquired ones, and the recent string of closures and canceled projects discussed here is an extension of that pattern. Opinion in the thread split over how earnings can look strong even as the business appears to be shrinking at the same time — some argued the cost-cutting is what’s boosting profit margins, while others saw it as simply reining in investment in new IP development. One reply also pointed to overall group headcount figures, which had actually trended upward rather than down, a detail that shows studio closures don’t necessarily line up one-to-one with the group’s total staffing moves. Worth keeping in mind while reading: it would be premature to conclude, based on the sheer number of closures alone, that the organization’s overall headcount or investment is shrinking.

  • Romancing SaGa 3 Remake Moves Protagonist Selection to After the ‘Roanne Uprising’

Square Enix has revealed — during an official livestream celebrating the announcement of Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United — that it’s scrapping the original game’s feature of choosing your protagonist right at the outset. In the original, players picked one of eight candidates before setting off on their journey, but in the remake, everyone will first play through the “Roanne Uprising” chapter, where all the protagonists join forces, and only choose their protagonist afterward. The thread was split between people welcoming a shared opening chapter and those worried about pacing on repeat playthroughs and how characters like Katarina and Mikhail — who had their own unique opening scenarios — will be handled.

In Square Enix’s Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United, players won’t choose their protagonist at the start of the game as they did in the original. Instead, the structure is being revised so that players first go through the entirety of the Roanne Uprising, getting to know each character, and only then pick whichever protagonist they like.

This was revealed by producer Shin’ichi Tazuke during an official livestream celebrating the game’s announcement. In the original Romancing SaGa 3, players began their adventure by picking one protagonist from eight candidates right at the start, but in the remake, players will first play through the Roanne Uprising in full before choosing a protagonist.

Kind of like Octopath Traveler. But Romancing SaGa 3 genuinely had everyone experience the same opening event from different perspectives at first, so this actually seems fine.

That sounds like a tedious structure. I always picked Katarina or Mikhail specifically because their openings wrapped up fast.
    8AnonymousSep 12, 2026 12:47
They'll probably let you skip the opening on a second playthrough. Though on the flip side, that also means you won't be able to strip Mikhail of his gear and steal it anymore lol

Romancing SaGa's story and objectives are never quite clear anyway, so I think adding a shared opening at the start is a good idea. Still, I wish something could be done about the art having zero personality. Japanese anime-style art has gotten rough lately — everyone has the same pretty face, just different hair and clothes. It looks like AI art.

Sounds like it's going to be a bloated game that forces you to sit through a long opening event first. Re: #88 Aren't you confusing it with a movie? Have you actually played the original?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The original Romancing SaGa 3 (1994) is known for letting players pick one protagonist from eight candidates right at the start, with branching story elements where unchosen protagonists could later appear as enemies. The newly announced remake changes this so that players first experience the “Roanne Uprising,” where all the protagonists join forces, before choosing their protagonist. On the thread, some welcomed making the Uprising chapter a shared experience, while others raised concerns about how characters like Katarina and Mikhail — who had unique opening scenarios in the original — will be handled, and whether the comfort of repeat playthroughs will suffer. There was also some confusion in the thread over whether the Uprising chapter is a movie/cutscene or a playable section, exposing a gap in shared assumptions between those who had and hadn’t played the original. It’s also worth noting that details not explicitly stated in the livestream, such as how the character-renaming feature will be handled, remain speculative for now.

  • Sony Rumored to Have Pulled Funding After Kojima Productions Rejected Buyout Offer

According to a report from an overseas source, a rumor is making the rounds on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (Geha) claiming that Sony Interactive Entertainment repeatedly proposed acquiring Kojima Productions, but Hideo Kojima kept refusing — so Sony cut off funding. The reasoning given is that anything short of full exclusivity on the PS5 hardware itself, rather than just a timed exclusivity deal, wasn’t worth the investment. The thread mixed voices questioning Sony’s fixation on exclusivity with others praising Kojima Productions for holding firm on its independence, and the discussion expanded into comparisons with past exclusive titles and speculation about where future titles will end up.

    William R. Aguilar
Sony/PlayStation has proposed acquiring Kojima Productions multiple times over the years, and Kojima has turned them down every time. Recently, Sony made another acquisition offer, which was again rejected — so funding is being cut off. The reasoning: anything short of full exclusivity on PlayStation hardware itself, as opposed to a mere "timed exclusive," wasn't judged worth the cost and risk.

With dev costs skyrocketing, going PS5-exclusive at this point is basically suicide — it's already a graveyard of failed exclusives. Even if it eventually comes out, missing its window does more harm than good, so of course it'll get snapped up by Microsoft, who's more tolerant of multiplatform releases.

And honestly, if Sony had been cranking out masterpieces on PS5 like Last of Us 1 or Ghost of Tsushima, would they be getting bashed this hard?

Teaming up with Microsoft, Xbox exclusivity is possible, but "Xbox-only, no PC or Steam release" will never happen. So even with Kojima turning down the buyout, that's lower risk than the PS exclusivity he didn't want. The contract terms are loose enough that it could still show up on Sony's or Nintendo's hardware a year or two down the line.

The sensible users out there are saying, "Great, now it'll come to Steam too."

Background and key points of this discussion

When Kojima Productions became independent from Konami in 2015, it received financial backing from Sony to develop the “Death Stranding” series for PS4/PS5. At the same time, Hideo Kojima has repeatedly stated that the studio “will remain independent,” maintaining a stance of preserving management freedom even while accepting outside investment. In recent years, as game development costs have soared, publishers have grown much stricter about demanding a return on investment commensurate with exclusivity deals, and this rumor appears to fit that broader trend. That said, this information comes from a leak by an overseas source, and neither Sony nor Kojima Productions has issued any official statement — so it should be treated with appropriate caution.

Utawarerumono Zan 2, released in December 2021, was a PS4/PS5 cross-gen release. Then the president got demoted in February 2022, and starting with Gitou Tantei Nosuri in December 2022, it became a PS4/Switch multi-release. From that point on, they started launching on Switch from day one too.

Honestly, it was so easy to read. Naoya kept insisting it had nothing to do with him, but it's obvious.

Because the PS5 is dead here.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Yuke’s is a development studio best known for fighting and sports games, and according to thread posts, Aquaplus reportedly came under its umbrella in recent years. It’s worth noting that the timing of the presidential change and the shifts in title release strategy are all based on anonymous posters’ recollections, not primary sources backing an official announcement. The debate split largely into two points. One was whether Aquaplus’s shift from PS-heavy releases to a Switch-focused approach should be called ‘de-PlayStation-ing,’ with pushback against applying that label to titles that were already multi-platform. The other was whether Switch 2 is actually a promising market for third-party software — the sales figures cited in the thread were limited comparisons across titles with different release timing and characteristics, and readers should keep in mind that they’re not sufficient grounds for directly comparing sales strength between platforms.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Yuke’s: ‘We will push forward with porting Aquaplus titles to Switch 2’.”

  • Doubt cast on the ‘won’t sell because of low storage’ theory — 5ch: ‘The Switch sold fine with just 32GB’

An article published on Toyo Keizai Online, which attributes the poor sales of PS5 and Switch 2 games to “insufficient console storage,” was picked up on 5ch’s game hardware board. The article argued that backward-compatible games eat up console storage and discourage purchases of new titles, while also pointing out a contradiction in Nintendo’s explanation that “unwanted games can simply be deleted.” In response, thread posters pushed back one after another, arguing the article’s premise has no basis — noting that the original Switch, which had only 32GB of storage, still sold software just fine. The discussion also branched into the difference between Switch 2’s pricey proprietary microSD Express cards and the old, cheap SD cards, plus a nitpicky argument over the “publisher” credit on certain Nintendo titles.

On the matter of software sales trends: this is what the author calls the “storage cost” problem — the worry that if backward compatibility is kept, previous-generation games keep hogging console storage, which in turn saps the motivation to buy new titles. Nintendo explains that “unwanted games can be deleted, and save data (data storing game progress and player records) stays in the cloud, etc.,” but from the user’s perspective, that’s a major contradiction.

The same goes for Sony Group, but what I sense in this Nintendo attitude is the philosophy that "storage can be small because game software itself is easy to delete." I don't think that necessarily matches the not-always-rational psychology of users, though. I'd like Nintendo and Sony Group to deepen their hardware and software with a real understanding of this user behavioral psychology. Careful attention to how users actually feel should translate directly into stronger platform value and corporate value over the mid-to-long term.

Sony, not thinking about user psychology at all!!

Lol, an idiot who doesn't even know the difference between sales and publishing.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Behind this debate is the proprietary “microSD Express” standard adopted for Switch 2. Thread posters repeatedly pointed out that it’s pricier than the old generic SD cards, making the kind of cheap storage expansion possible in the original Switch era much harder now. At the same time, there was strong criticism that the article’s core premise — that insufficient storage determines how well games sell — comes with no numerical evidence to back it up, and the central rebuttal was that this contradicts the original Switch’s track record of producing many hit titles despite having just 32GB of storage. Later in the thread, opinion split over where to draw the line on “is it really a Nintendo game,” regarding third-party-developed titles for which Nintendo is credited as the “distributor (publisher).” That’s a separate issue from the article’s main point, but it’s easy to get tangled up in since it ties into how you interpret the fact that most Nintendo titles don’t use key cards (the proprietary physical card format).

*This article was compiled as an excerpt/summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry [Geha]) thread “‘Toyo Yasuda’: “PS5 and Switch 2 games don’t sell because they lack storage”” (a mocking mashup of Toyo Keizai and the author’s name, Yasuda).
