  • New Metroid ‘Ravenas’ Trailer Hits 2.77M Views, Said to Have Already Surpassed Dread

A thread went up on 5ch’s “Hardware & Industry” (Geha) board reporting that the trailer for Nintendo’s new game “Metroid Ravenas” has hit 2.77 million views, surpassing the view count of its predecessor, “Metroid Dread.” Dread, released in 2021, was a hit that sold over 3 million copies — the best-selling entry in the series — arriving right as the indie “Metroidvania” genre was booming. The thread branched into comparisons of how Nintendo titles land domestically versus overseas, citing the Kirby series’ growing overseas popularity since going 3D and the high view count for “Yo-kai Watch 2,” while opinions split over how to weigh Dread’s sales against Hollow Knight’s worldwide total of over 15 million copies.

The trailer's already at 2.77M views, past Dread's numbers
    And it's still climbing
By the way, it's beaten Dread's view count in Japan too — this Metroid is getting serious attention here as well
    4AnonymousSep 12, 2026 09:15
Funny how nobody on Geha is even talking about it.

People kept saying Dread wouldn't sell since there are so many great indie Metroidvanias out there,
but it sold just fine — turns out demand's always there.

    Re: #14
There are plenty of great indie Metroidvanias, sure,
but they still get buried under the competition.
Nintendo keeps the IP visible over the long haul, which builds awareness,
so when it comes down to the same game, the big publisher wins.
    37AnonymousSep 12, 2026 09:39
    Re: #14
Sure, Metroidvania's having a moment, but there's still a real bias that 'Metroidvania = cheap indie game,' and it's rare for a major publisher to throw this kind of budget at one.

Dread was built out carefully in 3D even in the background, but going by the trailer, Ravenas' model detail looks like a big step up from Dread's.

With cheap titles like Hollow Knight and Ender Lilies being the norm now, selling that well at that price point is impressive.
    The revenue must be substantial.

America being stronger is probably real,

Kirby broke out with the previous game, Forgotten Land — 2 million sold in Japan versus over 7.5 million worldwide, so its overseas user base grew a lot.

That figure's as of end of March 2024, so it's probably grown to around 9 million by now.

    Yo-kai Watch 2 at 2.35M views, that's insane lol

So it's Ocarina of Time, then Yo-kai Watch? lol
    111AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:39
    Re: #34
Yo-kai Watch 2 originally sold several million, so that tracks.
Domestically, Ocarina of Time's view count and pre-order momentum are actually more surprising, since the original barely scraped a million copies and ended up in bargain bins.
It's well-known and influential overseas, and recognized in Japan too, but there probably aren't that many people with real nostalgia for it.

    Re: #53
For a 3D Metroid, the bare minimum hurdle is becoming the "second game" pick for people who bought a 3D Zelda — it doesn't even get in the ring until it clears that.
    48AnonymousSep 12, 2026 09:48
    It's an undeniable masterpiece.
Sold over 3 million, the best-selling Metroid ever.
Hopefully Ravenas ends up beating that number.
Bananza's already past 4 million, so it's definitely not an impossible target.

    Re: #48
When you consider Hollow Knight has sold over 15 million copies…
it's hard not to feel weird that the imitator has more buyers than the originator. 🤔
    69AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:12
    Re: #68
Given the price difference, it's basically like Suika Game or Mecha Chameleon (cheap hit indie/mobile games) selling a ton.
    Why would that even matter?
    89AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:24
    Re: #68
Well, Hollow Knight's list price was around 1,500 yen, and it eventually got sale-priced down to about 400 yen.
Put another way, if it took that much brand recognition and constant sales to reach 15 million, that probably just shows Metroidvania is still a niche genre overall.
    49AnonymousSep 12, 2026 09:49
Wanted to buy Dread, but if a sequel's coming I guess I'll just get that instead.

Metroidvania blowing up in the indie scene while the Metroid series itself was dormant for years was probably an unexpected stroke of luck for Nintendo.
Thanks to that, it's treated like "THE Metroid" now.
Though that status seems to apply only to the 2D games — Prime's value looks like it's dropped in comparison.
    72AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:13
Kirby, the casual-friendly series, sells better in 3D,
while Metroid, the hardcore fan series, does better flipped back to 2D.

Hardcore fans will buy any genre, but casual players only go for specific genres they like.

    88AnonymousSep 12, 2026 10:23
    Re: #72
Honestly, indie games have gotten a lot more accessible lately with difficulty options and such, so casual players are buying those instead — paying full price for a 2D Kirby is basically only something diehard fans do anymore.
Planet Robobot barely sold at all, after all.

    Re: #69
The price difference isn't as big as people make it out to be.
This is a boxed release using cartridges,
so that price also covers retailer margins and shipping costs.

IPs born on the Famicom Disk System tend to struggle carrying old fans forward and picking up new ones with each sequel.
It also hurt that Metroid was basically dormant during the N64 era, right when Nintendo's hardware audience was turning over.
Prime revived things in the GameCube era, but the 2D side went quiet for way too long after the DS games.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The discussion kicked off with a report that the trailer for Nintendo’s new game “Metroid Ravenas” had reached 2.77 million views, surpassing the view count of its 2021 predecessor, “Metroid Dread.” Dread holds the series’ best sales record at over 3 million copies, and the fact that it arrived after the indie “Metroidvania” genre itself had already taken off became a key point of debate in the thread. Opinions split especially over how to compare Hollow Knight’s worldwide total of over 15 million copies against Dread’s sales, with an ongoing back-and-forth about differences in list price and distribution (physical distribution costs, sale frequency). One point readers can easily misread is that trailer view counts don’t necessarily track with actual sales — the thread itself pointed out the gap between “Yo-kai Watch 2″‘s high view count and its real-world sales scale. It’s also worth noting, for anyone following the series as a whole, that the “Metroid Prime” line has seen delayed follow-ups, prompting skepticism in the thread about the pace of future sequels.

  • Hideo Kojima Slammed for X Post After Sony Split — New Title ‘PHYSINT’ Heads to Xbox

Game director Hideo Kojima’s own post on X, made after the end of his contract with Sony — his publishing partner at Kojima Productions — has stirred controversy on 5ch for reportedly showing no gratitude. Bloomberg reports that Sony pulled out of development on the new title ‘PHYSINT’ over budget overruns and missed deadlines, sending the project to Xbox instead. The Death Stranding series is also said to have sold below Sony’s expectations. On 5ch’s Hardware & Industry board, opinions were split over the circumstances of the contract termination and the scale of Sony’s investment, which had long supported Kojima Productions since it went independent.

Kojima went independent when realistically only small-scale development should've been possible,

The reason Death Stranding 2 didn't sell despite being such high quality and more fun than the first is
definitely because the people who played the first one, found it boring, and dropped it just didn't buy the sequel.
The first game's sales were basically riding entirely on the Metal Gear Solid brand's track record,
and that's the part they failed to read.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Hideo Kojima went independent from Konami in 2015 and founded Kojima Productions, and Sony has since served as the studio’s exclusive publisher, backing it financially and helping sustain a roughly 200-person studio for nearly a decade. Where the thread’s opinions split was over whether responsibility for the contract termination lies with Sony or with Kojima — the claim that ‘a buyout was offered’ cites no source and remains unconfirmed. The reported sales slump for Death Stranding and the budget overruns and delays on ‘PHYSINT’ come from Bloomberg’s reporting, and no official explanation from Kojima’s side has been confirmed as of this article. The topic can also be read as one example of the broader power dynamic between independent creators and major publishers that’s common across the games industry.

It was reported on 5ch that on September 3rd, an appeal against a rejection ruling was filed for patent application “2026-019762” — a monster-capture mechanic patent filed by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. Nintendo’s legal maneuvering around Pocketpair’s *Palworld* continues to drag on. The thread split between users defending Nintendo’s move as “a righteous fight to protect creators” and critics calling it “a big corporation crushing small studios with patents.” The conversation gradually spread into gripes about Nintendo’s own recent game output and its heavy reliance on remakes.

it's increasingly looking like no rights were actually infringed, and imitator products showing up is a perfectly healthy part of doing business anyway
More than anything, it'd be the worst possible outcome for creators if a giant corporation gets away with using patents it hoarded out of boredom to crush small studios' games it simply doesn't like

Background and Key Points of This Story

Since 2024, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have been pursuing a patent infringement suit against Pocketpair’s *Palworld* over its monster-capture mechanics, among other things. The application number making the rounds this time, “2026-019762,” is a derivative patent limited to touch-panel operation; it was initially rejected and has now reached the stage of an appeal against that rejection — it does not by itself indicate which side is winning the main lawsuit. The thread split between those defending Nintendo’s stance as “action to protect creators across the industry” and those criticizing it as “a large corporation using patents to crush smaller studios.” The discussion also expanded into praise for how much detail Palworld put into its animation work, plus frustration over Nintendo’s own recent lean toward remakes and sequels — though it’s worth noting these points are separate from the merits of the patent dispute itself.

  • Can Sony Pull Off a “Comeback”? Revival Plans Fly Across 5ch’s Console Wars Board

A thread titled “How can Sony turn things around from here” appeared on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. Right at the top, someone noted that “the most recent earnings report showed record-high sales and profit,” and yet post after post voiced alarm that Sony is somehow in dire enough straits to need a “comeback” in the first place. Opinions split over the outlook for the PlayStation business, the heavy tilt toward Western-made games, and the lack of original IP, with a good number of posters also worried about a high-profit structure that’s really just propped up by cost-cutting.

    29AnonymousSep 11, 2026 22:08
    Re: #23
This is probably the only path left.
They have no choice but to sell it as "play mobile gacha games on a big TV screen instead of a tiny phone screen."
That could mean making PS-exclusive gacha titles, or getting Chinese studios to churn out cash-grab action games with the pitch "control cute anime girls on the big screen!" — I bet the target crowd would bite instantly (the original oddly says "barriers," likely slang for the intended audience).
Anyway, either way, they've been pushed into a corner where just having third parties make software like before no longer cuts it
    43AnonymousSep 11, 2026 22:25
    Re: #23
No — if they throw away even the nominal pretense of being a home console, that would actually finish them off.
If being a giant smartphone is fine, then physical discs aren't needed either, and that's exactly why they're trying to ditch them.
But do that, and retailers will drop them too.

With smartphones, companies don't need retailers because they run their own app stores, but there's no way PlayStation could build a store like that from scratch at this point.
The more you think about how they could survive, the more it just proves they're already checkmated.

So there's at least a little chance, then?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The claim of “record-high profits” that comes up often in threads like this appears to refer to either Sony Group’s overall earnings or those of its Game & Network Services segment specifically, but since no source is cited anywhere in the thread, these posts shouldn’t be taken at face value without caution. Where opinions diverged was over how to read those strong numbers: skeptics saw them as “surface-level strength” propped up by cost-cutting and hits from Chinese mobile gacha games, while others read them as a genuine sign of underlying business health. The worries about a lack of original IP and dependence on third parties echo a real industry-wide shift — in recent years the PlayStation business has leaned more on live-service titles and partnerships with outside publishers rather than major in-house new releases — so this isn’t just idle griping. That said, the thread also mixed in claims stated as flat fact with no backing, plus a few borderline conspiracy-theory posts; in writing this article, claims without any clear basis have been left out.

※This article is an excerpt and summary based on the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “[Urgent] How Sony Can Turn Things Around From Here.”

  • Backlash Grows Against ‘Switch 2 Is Portable’ Claims — Cloud-Streaming Fans and Handheld Diehards Clash

A Nintendo Switch 2 user’s claim that “the Switch 2 version can be played portably lol” sparked pushback in a 5ch thread, with users countering that smartphone cloud streaming also plays with almost no noticeable lag. The thread saw an ongoing clash between fans of native handheld hardware and streaming advocates, with the discussion expanding to cover the merits of portable devices like UMPCs, the Steam Deck, and PS Portal, price gaps of over 300,000 yen, and the connection hassles unique to remote play. At the heart of the debate was what the word “portable” actually means in terms of real-world experience.

    That's normal
Anyone who actually tries remote play quickly realizes how much of a hassle it is
The people singing its praises like this are just the weird ones

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Cloud gaming refers to systems that transmit video from a console or PC over the internet to a device like a smartphone, with Xbox Cloud Gaming and PS Remote Play as prime examples. PS Portal, mentioned in the thread, is a dedicated remote-play device that can’t run games on its own — it requires a live internet connection to a PS5 console — which is a fundamentally different setup from the Switch 2, which stores game data internally and can boot up standalone. Without accounting for that difference, it’s hard to convey what kind of experience the word “portable” actually points to. Also worth noting: UMPCs (mini-PC-style handheld gaming devices) range in price from roughly 100,000 to 400,000-plus yen depending on the model, so the “300,000 yen price gap” cited in the thread assumes comparison with a high-end model. The thread weaves together multiple points of contention — tolerance for lag, the hassle of connecting, and price-to-performance — without reaching any consensus on which approach is better.

I think what happened is Saros couldn't pay back the funding Sony had invested and ended up selling the whole company to Sony.
Kojima Productions, on the other hand, is profitable enough that they could buy the IP back from Sony—so I don't think this counts as a failure.
If Death Stranding was put together solidly and sold 2 million copies, that's a fine outcome.
And besides, if they were going to cut ties over Death Stranding 2 underperforming, doing it now is way too late.

    Re: #149
The contract itself says 2030 or later—so what deadline did they even "blow through"?

Background and key points of this discussion

PHYSINT is a joint project between Kojima Productions and Sony announced in 2022, with a release window that was pegged at “around 2030” from the start. That makes it more reasonable to read the report’s “missed deadline” not as the actual release date, but as an internal development milestone—such as submitting an alpha build. As for Death Stranding’s actual sales figures, commenters in the thread pointed out that the “20 million” number likely includes free giveaways, and it’s unclear from the report alone how the real sales figures compare to Sony’s investment recoupment line. The capital relationship between Kojima Productions and Sony dates back to a 2022 investment, so if this report is accurate, it would be an unusual case of a split from a major publisher. Opinions in the thread were divided over the contract terms and who’s really at fault—but it’s worth noting that all of it remains speculation without any primary sourcing.

  • GOTY Contenders Pile Up, GTA6’s Eligibility Sparks Debate — 5ch: “This Feels Off”

A thread predicting this year’s GOTY (Game of the Year) popped up on the Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. Among the contenders named were Pragmata, Resident Evil 9, Wolverine, and Banshi Senkou, but the real center of debate was whether Grand Theft Auto VI, releasing November 20, would even be eligible for this year’s The Game Awards. Since past eligibility cutoffs have clustered in mid-to-late November, some argued GTA6 could sneak in under the wire — while others pushed back on the idea of crowning a game whose reputation hasn’t even had time to settle right after release. Opinions were split.

Judges probably get review data well ahead of time, so timing likely isn't actually an issue on their end
But yeah, there's definitely a whiff of 'selling on hype without real confidence' to it

Background and key points of this discussion

The Game Awards (TGA) typically sets its eligibility cutoff for “games of that year” sometime in mid-to-late November. In post 92, a poster shared a decade’s worth of cutoff dates they say they got from an AI, pointing out that GTA6, releasing November 20, could well sneak into this year’s eligibility window. It’s worth noting, though, that this is information the poster got from a generative AI, not an official announcement. Several awards besides TGA also call themselves “GOTY,” but the thread proceeds on the assumption that “talking about GOTY = talking about TGA,” so TGA isn’t necessarily the only benchmark that matters. It’s also worth flagging that KOTY (Kuso Game of the Year, i.e. “Worst Game of the Year”), which comes up in the thread, is an unofficial award that originated on 5ch and has nothing to do with TGA. The thread ends without a resolution, torn between the cautious view that “it’s strange to crown a game whose reputation hasn’t settled right after release” and the speculation that “the release date was deliberately timed for this.”

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “This Year’s GOTY Is Seriously, Actually Impossible to Call wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.”

  • Overseas Gamers Slam New Ocarina of Time Remake Footage as “PS3-Era Graphics” — 5ch Claps Back: “We’re Playing It Anyway”

Nintendo’s newly released footage of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake sparked controversy after overseas social media users criticized it, calling the gameplay “outdated” and the graphics “like something from the PS3 era.” On 5ch’s hardware/industry board (Geha), the post touched off a wave of reactions, with opinions split over whether the graphical direction matches the original and whether a realistic-style remake is even the right call. Plenty pushed back too, arguing you shouldn’t judge from still images alone since the actual footage leaves a different impression.

Outdated gameplay. Graphics like something out of the PS3 era. Everyone’s just drunk on nostalgia.

    Background and Points of Debate

Ocarina of Time originally released on the Nintendo 64 in 1998, and what’s sparked this discussion is the overseas reaction to new footage from its remake. Worth noting: the post that started it all didn’t come from an industry insider or expert, just an ordinary social media account, so it isn’t necessarily an authoritative take. Within the thread, several people pushed back against judging the game from still images alone, arguing the impression changes once you see it in motion — part of why opinions split comes down to how the material was presented. The debate over realistic-style remake graphics is also a familiar pattern that’s played out before, such as with the Star Fox remake, and this looks like another round of the classic praise-versus-criticism split that flares up whenever Nintendo puts out a high-fidelity remake.

But on 5ch, users have noted that it’s drawing far less criticism than other titles that get bashed for chasing realism, and that contrast has become a talking point. At the recent Zelda Direct, the development team said, “Rather than simply making it realistic, we aimed to recreate the essence of Ocarina of Time in a way that feels nostalgic,” while another director revealed that the design drew inspiration from Japanese puppet theater. On the thread, opinions split over the more basic question of whether this game can even be called “photorealistic” in the first place.

Setting aside how shiny/glossy the characters look,
the forests, towns, and fields are clearly more detailed and beautiful than in Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom.

"Rather than simply going for realistic expression, we were particular about reinventing it

Drew inspiration from Ningyogeki (traditional Japanese puppet theater)

    Re: #115
    🐷💢<It's NOT photorealistic, damn iiiiit!!

So what was all that about?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The term “photorealistic” is technically an evaluation axis referring to a texture and rendering quality indistinguishable from live-action footage. On the thread, however, it often gets conflated with the developers’ stated design philosophy of “recreating a sense of nostalgia,” leading to a lot of talking past each other. Aonuma’s comment didn’t deny realism itself — the point was that the team prioritized the original’s atmosphere over sheer realism. Likewise, the “puppet theater” motif Imamura mentioned is a separate axis from visual realism. Meanwhile, precedents like FF7 Remake and GTA6, both criticized for frame-rate drops and overly heavy visual presentation, are being brought up for comparison. What’s easy for readers to misunderstand is that the new game was never officially declared “not photorealistic” — only that the developers described where they chose to place their emphasis. That gap in interpretation is at the root of the thread’s disagreement.

  • Discs Are Dying, So Are Refunds: Wolverine Sparks Return-Policy Backlash on Foreign Forums

The trend of home consoles dropping physical (disc) versions in favor of download-only releases has sparked concern on overseas forums. The trigger was the new action game “Wolverine.” With its overseas reception looking rocky, commenters noted that a disc version could at least be resold secondhand to offset the loss — but digital versions are essentially non-refundable and non-returnable. The thread compared this to Steam’s refund policy (within two weeks of purchase and under two hours of playtime), while also debating the broader culture of buying new games with the expectation of reselling them later.

Given Wolverine's character traits, it was obvious from the start this was never going to be more fun than "Daman" (name unclear in the original post) no matter how hard they tried.
Instead of getting carried away stuffing political-correctness elements into the female characters,
if they'd just kept the protagonist consistent with the movie version, they could've sold it as a lavish character-based game.
This is not the time to be worrying about arm hair.

    Re: #92
If it were just Japan, maybe, but I can't see overseas consumers just letting this slide.

Background and key points of this discussion

In recent years, home consoles without disc drives — like the PS5 Digital Edition — have become more common. When a physical version exists, players can recoup part of the purchase price by reselling a finished game secondhand, but digital versions are generally not eligible for returns or refunds at all, and this asymmetry became the crux of the thread’s debate. Meanwhile, Steam offers refunds for PC purchases within two weeks and under two hours of playtime, and many commenters pointed out how thin console makers’ policies look by comparison. Some posts also argued that third-party publishers would find it harder to push shipments onto retailers, though it’s worth noting this was just one opinion within the thread, not a substantiated fact. The clash between those who embrace a resale-based consumer culture and those who see it as undervaluing developers’ work is also an extension of a long-running debate over what consoles should be.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Foreigner: “If discs are discontinued, you won’t be able to resell games like Wolverine even if they’re bad” → goes viral“.
