The story

Overseas reports claim that Sony is considering reviving “Ape Escape,” the beloved original PlayStation series, for the first time in 16 years. According to the reports, Team Asobi — the studio behind “Astro Bot” — is not involved in this particular project. On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, the news sparked a wave of questions such as “Is there even demand for this among today’s audience?” and “Does it make sense to release it as a PS5 exclusive?”, with many commenters arguing any new release should launch alongside a Switch version as a given. Drawing on nostalgia from longtime fans and sales figures from past entries, opinions on whether the revival makes sense ended up split.

Every single one of their games flopped and went into the red this year,
so they've been dangling more and more projects of questionable existence, like Last of Us and Ape Escape 🙄

Re: #4
Those "Sony trump cards" are all titles that barely sell in Japan anyway lol
10AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:30
The only people who even know this game, let alone would be happy about it, are middle-aged guys.
If they release it as a PS exclusive it's guaranteed to bomb — are they really okay with that?
Even bringing back an old game like this only makes sense if a Switch release is a given.
11AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:31
If by some chance they're bringing back an old Sony first-party title now, isn't Switch the best platform for it?
12AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:33
Nobody's going to be happy if they bring back Ape Escape.
If they're doing revivals, shouldn't Gravity Rush or Toro Inoue come first?
13AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:33
First I'm hearing that Bandai Namco was involved with Ape Escape.
14AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:34
After all that chest-thumping about garbage political correctness, ending up back here is just lame.
15AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:34
For what it's worth, Ape Escape is playable on PS4 and PS5 too, right?
18AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:36
If they were going to revive it, they should've pivoted while the original developers were still around.
It's way too late now.
19AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:38
I'd be happy if it actually comes out, but doesn't PS's current audience not really include people who'd buy something like this anymore?
21AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:40
Furi Furi! Ape Escape — sales uncountable (too low to track)

It used to sell 500,000+ copies at its peak, but even though this was just a VR-only(-ish) title, was this really the last entry, 16 years ago now… (the one before that, Pipo-saru Senki, sold only 15,000 copies)
22AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:41
It wasn't VR — it was exclusive to the "chin-con" attachment (fan slang for the game's distinctively shaped PS Move accessory).
23AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:44
I'd be happy if it's a mainline entry, but it's probably going to be some weird spin-off again.
25AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:47
They don't even have kids —
are middle-aged guys really going to play a kids' game?
26AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:52
Reviving Siren seems like it'd sell better.
Though if foreign developers make it, it'll probably just end up as another generic Western horror game.
31AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:02
Re: #26
That's actually what happened with the PS3 one.
The setting is still a Japanese village, but
practically every character in it is a foreigner.
28AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:54
Ape Escape was never really that big a seller to begin with…
At this point, if anyone other than Japan Studio makes it, it'll just end up as a completely different game, and even if it does come out, all I can see is it bombing.
29AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:57
I love the design of Ape Escape 3,
so why not just make a remake of 3 instead?
30AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:00
Speaking of Pipo-saru monkeys, isn't Snake one of them?
But Sony and Kojima Productions are on bad terms, aren't they? 🤭
38AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:07
It didn't sell that well back then either.
Unless it's like the Bandai Namco pattern where the original creator is desperate to bring it back, I don't see this happening…
40AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:09
Re: #38
The creator is at Team Asobi now… (he also worked on Gonjiro)
50AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:21
Lmao, aiming for the casual crowd with a ¥100,000 price wall.
Next it'll be a ¥200,000 wall.
53AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:26
Re: #50
PS6 Pro will probably launch in Japan at ¥50,000.
The current PS5 is already holding steady at ¥50,000,
and the LPDDR5X in the PS6 Pro is way cheaper to produce by comparison.
54AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:31
Has the times finally caught up with me?
I've been saying all along they should revive Ape Escape, Toro, Astro, Everybody's Golf, and Patapon as Switch multiplatform releases.
57AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:34
Re: #54
Sony has steered toward increasing first-party exclusives,
so a Switch multiplatform release is absolutely not happening.
61AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:38
Wouldn't it be a twist where they just hand it off to Bandai Namco and it ends up multiplatform on everything lol
81AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:58
Re: #61
It was designed to be played with the symmetrical analog sticks of the DualShock, so it'd probably be hard to release on Switch-type systems, which use Pro Controllers with asymmetrical sticks copied from the Xbox controller.
86AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:14
Re: #81
Stick placement alone isn't that big a deal.
Now, a system that doesn't even have a right stick at all — that would be a real problem for Ape Escape.
91AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:20
Re: #81
By that logic, Katamari Damacy seems like it'd be even harder to play without symmetrical sticks, but it's out on Switch.
67AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:41
Come to think of it, I recall Everybody's Golf got revived a little while back too.
Judging by how that went, even a Switch multiplatform release feels like it'd just be too late at this point.
74AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:46
Re: #67
Honestly, everything about it is too slow.
Even when Everybody's Golf and Patapon got their surprise announcement at a Nintendo Direct, the only people making noise about it were on the hardware board (Geha) — the general public barely reacted at all.
80AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:57
It's fun precisely because the rules are easy to understand…
So what was it that it was missing?
84AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:11
Re: #80
The PS3 era was the problem. There was no kid audience and development costs got too high, so they couldn't put out a new entry.
They tried hard on PSP too, but without a right stick they couldn't release a mainline game, so they put out spin-offs like racing games instead (though Saru Get You P did come out).
92AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:21
People don't buy a console because they want the hardware — they buy it because they want to play the software.
Do they really think people are going to go out and buy a brand-new PS5 just to play this?
96AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:31
Re: #92
Even if they revive a Sony first-party game that was popular back in the day, it's unlikely to bring in any new players.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“Ape Escape” began on the PS1 in 2001 as one of Sony’s early first-party titles, winning fans of all ages with its claw-machine-like monkey-capturing action. However, the series’ new releases dried up after a PS Vita title around 2010, with its most recent entry being “Furi Furi! Ape Escape,” a PS Move-compatible minigame collection. SCE Japan Studio, which handled development, has since been dissolved, and some of its staff have since joined Team Asobi, the studio currently behind “Astro Bot.” A notable feature of this overseas leak is that it specifies Team Asobi is not involved in the revival project, which set off a flurry of questions on the thread about who would actually develop it and who it’s even being made for. Opinions split mainly over whether there’s any commercial sense in releasing it as a PS5 exclusive given that longtime fans now skew middle-aged, with many arguing a Switch multiplatform release should be a given. Readers should keep in mind that this is still unconfirmed information originating overseas, not an official announcement from Sony.
