My money's on Pokopoke (forum nickname for a Pokémon title) or Resident Evil for the Grand Prize

Death Stranding's quality is genuinely high
Taste varies, but since it's basically an extension of the first game there's nothing especially groundbreaking about the design — still, it's a solid, dependable game
and the story is actually easier to connect with emotionally than the first one

Silent Hill f, meanwhile, has one foot in "bad game" territory — mediocre overall, and the combat is rough

Urban Legend Dismantling Center is also wildly popular, but I found it boring and dropped it. What's up with that? I felt a huge gap between my reaction and everyone else's.
Maybe visual novels ride on hype more, and since most people haven't actually played them, the ratings end up going easy on them

For the GOTY, I recall Baldur's Gate 3 won it once it hit full release

    Background and Talking Points

The Japan Game Awards are organized by CESA (the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association), with the Grand Prize chosen from among the Award of Excellence winners through a mix of public voting and judging. As commenters noted, the awards lean heavily on public voting, and it was dissatisfaction with that format that led Masahiro Sakurai to launch a separate honor, the “Game Designers Award,” which judges games on different criteria. Because eligibility is determined by the Japanese domestic release date, games with separate early access and full release dates can end up handled inconsistently — the thread raised questions about this, including why “Meccha Chameleon” fell outside the eligibility window and how early access titles should be treated. Opinions on the nominees also split sharply along the lines of who had actually played them, with posters going back and forth over whether critics had really tried the games before judging them.

  • Psychic Force 2012 Ports to PS5/Switch/Steam in 2027 — 5ch: ‘The Dreamcast Version Was the Perfect Port’

The versus fighting game Psychic Force 2012 has been announced for release on PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Steam in 2027. Publisher Cosmo Machia also released a teaser trailer ahead of Tokyo Game Show 2026. This marks the first time the title — originally released in 1998 as a Dreamcast exclusive — has been ported to another platform. On 5ch, some welcomed the news with comments like “finally coming to a home console,” while others expressed disappointment that it’s “a port, not a new game,” and questioned why PS4 was left out. Debate also broke out over the order in which gaming outlets list supported platforms.

Cosmo Machia has announced that the versus fighting game Psychic Force 2012 will launch on PS5/Nintendo Switch/Steam in 2027. A teaser trailer for Tokyo Game Show 2026 was also released alongside the announcement.

    "There's no escape" — shun-shun-shun-shun-shun-niko-shun (mimicking the character's rapid-fire attack sound/voice clip).

Background and key points of this discussion

Psychic Force 2012 is a versus fighting game originally released in 1998 as a Dreamcast exclusive; this marks its first port to another platform. Publisher Taito came under Square Enix’s umbrella in 2005, and in recent years its business has centered more on managing and re-releasing rights to older titles than on new games. The “platform listing order” debate that flared up in the thread — the claim that gaming media tends to put the PlayStation version first when covering multiplatform titles — is a long-running point of contention on the video game hardware board (Geha) and isn’t unique to this article. It’s also worth noting that at the time of announcement, details like price, exact release timing, and whether this is a remaster or a straight port haven’t been revealed, so comments expressing disappointment that it’s “a port, not a new game” or speculating that “a complete pack will come out later” are both unconfirmed guesses at this stage.

  • Sony’s ‘Death Stranding 2’ Named for the Japan Game Awards — But Sony Skips Its Own Ceremony

A thread reporting that Sony’s “Death Stranding 2” had been named in the Japan Game Awards selection lit up 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. Early on, posters jabbed at the fact that Sony itself was absent from the award ceremony, and questioned whether this was actually the top “Grand Award” or just one of the “Award for Excellence” picks. Some compared the win counts between Nintendo’s “Pokémon Bananza” and various Sony titles, and the conversation soon drifted into the circumstances behind director Hideo Kojima’s departure from Sony.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The Japan Game Awards are announced alongside the Tokyo Game Show, using a two-stage system: roughly ten titles are first named “Award for Excellence” winners, and one of those is then chosen as the single “Grand Award.” As pointed out in the thread (e.g., >>16), some posters flagged that this might be an Award for Excellence rather than the Grand Award — based on the thread’s posts alone, it can’t be confirmed whether Death Stranding 2’s honor here is the Grand Award or just one of the Excellence Award picks. Some also speculated that, due to the eligibility window, newer Splatoon titles may have been excluded from consideration — a reminder that the casual “how many wins for Nintendo vs. Sony this year” tally is being made without a clearly agreed line on which titles even qualify. Many posts also touch on Hideo Kojima’s relationship with Sony, but comments about his contract status after going independent, or his ties to Microsoft, are largely fragmentary speculation rather than confirmed fact.

  • Japan Game Awards Ceremony: Some Call Palworld “Untouchable”

The Japan Game Awards is one of the biggest awards in Japan’s domestic game industry, announced by CESA to coincide with the Tokyo Game Show; in 2026 the ceremony was held starting at 6:00 PM on September 15. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, a thread starter’s announcement touched off a wave of posts listing past winners and guessing at this year’s Grand Prize. Pokémon Legends Z-A emerged as a strong favorite, while some argued Palworld would be a tough sell given the image damage from its lawsuit with Nintendo. The thread also touched on how the judging combines public voting with a panel of judges, and how the eligibility period runs from June of the previous year through May of the award year.

Starting at 6:00 PM today, the Japan Game Awards ceremony will be held.

The Game Designers Award, being retired after this year, is scheduled to be presented near the end.

    – All of the above titles are eligible, and beyond that, every Nintendo Switch 2 title released in Japan since the console launched, through May 31, 2026, is also eligible.

The winners of the Japan Game Awards, in every category, are decided through a mix of "public voting" and judging by a "selection committee/panel of judges" made up of industry experts and creators. Here's roughly how the main "Game of the Year" category and the other categories get decided.

So basically, that means games ordinary people haven't actually played are less likely to get picked.

"Coddling" is putting it mildly — it's basically an astroturfing squad, lol

    Background and Key Points

The Japan Game Awards is hosted by CESA (Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association) and announced during the Tokyo Game Show; the eligibility period typically runs from June 1 through May 31 of the following year for titles released domestically. Because the judging combines voting by the general public with evaluation by a panel of experts, the thread repeatedly raised doubts about the selection criteria — including the observation that “games ordinary people haven’t played are less likely to get picked,” and the recurring example that the CESA Awards (this award’s predecessor) once gave its Grand Prize to Sakura Wars over Pokémon, despite Pokémon being in the middle of a huge nationwide boom at the time. It’s also easy to confuse the Japan Game Awards with KADOKAWA’s separately run “Famitsu Awards” — Shigeru Miyamoto’s 2008 prize was actually the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award, not any kind of hall-of-fame induction. As for Palworld, with its patent lawsuit against Nintendo still ongoing, discussion focused more on image concerns than on whether it could actually be selected.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Gaming Hardware)) thread “Starting at 6:00 PM today, the Japan Game Awards ceremony will be held.“

  • “Pokoa” vs. “Palworld”: 5ch Sales Comparison Sparks a Fight — “It’s 8 Million Cumulative, FYI”

A thread titled “Pokoa isn’t selling as well as Palworld” on the Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board sparked a debate over the actual sales numbers. Pokoa’s cumulative sales were cited as “8 million units,” while opinions split on Palworld’s early-access peak — was it “15 million” or “18 million”? Someone also posted an image showing an all-time sales ranking, but since it didn’t match the official figure of 15 million, some replies called it a “fabricated ranking.” Whether to count from early access or only after full release also became a sticking point, since the two methods give very different totals.

    Re: #89
There shouldn't need to be a bashing stick in the first place — there's no other decent home console out there anyway.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

For Steam early-access titles, publishers differ on whether to fold early-access sales into the total once a game exits early access, so figures like “15 million” and “18 million” can both end up circulating for the same title depending on when each was announced. On top of that, plays via Xbox Game Pass aren’t counted as purchases, which makes the thread’s claim that “actual sales must be higher” hard to verify from the outside. The all-time sales ranking image posted in the thread also didn’t match the official figures and had no clear source, so its accuracy couldn’t be confirmed either. Readers should note that the thread was dominated by the kind of partisan sniping typical of the Hardware/Industry board — terms like “Nishi” (a slur for Nintendo Switch fans), “buta” (“pig,” another Nintendo-fan slur), and “obstacle” got thrown around more than any real comparison of sales figures.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “Geha”) thread “[Basic Premise] Pokoa really isn’t selling anywhere near as well as Palworld, right? Why do Switch fanboys act so high and mighty about it?“

  • IGN Reviewer Reportedly Fired After Giving Wolverine a Low Score — Other Outlets Scored It the Same

After IGN gave Sony’s exclusive title Marvel’s Wolverine a review score of around 60 out of 100, word spread on X (formerly Twitter) that the outlet’s publishing contract had subsequently been terminated — and the news made waves on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board too. The timing is notable, since reports of major layoffs are also circulating at IGN, and plenty of posts are linking the two events together. Re: #119
What's even the point of that? Lmaooo
You're denying the entire point of Metascore reviews — that's some seriously toxic logic

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Game review scores are said to feed into sales performance and sequel decisions via aggregator sites, and suspicions that advertising and promotional ties with publishers influence those scores have long persisted. The primary source for this story is an individual post on X, with no official statement confirmed from IGN or its parent company — as of this thread, there’s no verified causal link between the reviewer’s treatment, the reported halt in publishing, and the ongoing layoffs. Within the thread, some voiced suspicion of a capital relationship, noting that IGN’s parent company once published Sony’s official “Official PlayStation Magazine,” while others insisted the two are “completely separate companies” — this point remains unresolved. A premise readers can easily get wrong is that “IGN alone gave an unfairly low score,” but in reality most major outlets lined up with similar scores, so the evaluation of the review’s content itself and the truth behind the firing controversy need to be considered separately.

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, some posters admitted they hadn’t even realized the release date had arrived, while others worried the user score would get trashed by a flood of one-off accounts. Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Marvel’s Wolverine” is a PS5-exclusive licensed action title developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment’s own studios, and — judging by its pricing tiers and the contents of the Digital Deluxe Edition — it’s clearly positioned by the company as one of its flagship, big-budget releases. What split opinion on the thread was the reliability of the user score: posters cited the familiar pattern where scores on outside sites like Metacritic tend to get trashed by a flood of one-off accounts right after launch, pointing to past cases involving Nintendo titles as precedent. At the same time, early reviews from major outlets like IGN came in around 9 out of 10, highlighting the structural gap that often opens up between critical reviews and user voting. Several posters also noted that, in Japan, the release date itself wasn’t well known — an interesting point suggesting exclusive titles don’t generate the same kind of hype threads that build anticipation the way multiplatform releases do, revealing a real difference in temperature between the two. It’s also worth keeping in mind that licensed character games have a history of being churned out cheaply in the past, which tends to keep expectations low in the Japanese market from the outset.

  • Report: Sweet Baby Inc. Allegedly Involved in PS5’s ‘Wolverine,’ X-Men Name Reportedly Getting Changed

Reports that narrative consultancy Sweet Baby Inc. is involved in Sony/Insomniac Games’ PS5-exclusive ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ have sparked discussion on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Geha)” board. According to the reports, the in-game “X-Men” will be rebranded as “Team X,” dropping the word “Men,” and posters noted that the news has fueled backlash on overseas forums. Thread commenters were split on why companies keep signing with Sweet Baby Inc. despite the known backlash — some pointed to funding pressures or reputation management, while others dismissed it as exaggeration from critics.

"Insomniac is dropping the word 'Men' from the X-Men name in its upcoming Wolverine game, rebranding the iconic mutants as Team X.
Sweet Baby Inc. is reported to be involved with this game.

According to Insomniac Games creative director Marcus Smith, there are no X-Men in the world of the upcoming Marvel's Wolverine.
Instead, players will encounter a group of mutants called Team X.
The announcement has drawn immediate online backlash, especially given reports that narrative consulting firm Sweet Baby Inc. is involved in the project."

So they pay Sweet Baby Inc. a ton of money for "consulting" (lol) just to get their stamp of approval, basically.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Since around 2023, Sweet Baby Inc. has been a divisive presence in the overseas game industry as a firm offering “politically correct”-style narrative consulting. Titles reported to involve the company tend to draw concentrated criticism, and this Wolverine story is an extension of that pattern. That said, it’s worth noting that the cited source, geeksandgamers.com, leans toward industry-critical commentary and is not an official statement from Sony or Insomniac. In the thread, theories about why a company would sign on despite risking a sales hit — ranging from funding needs to investor pressure to score-boosting tactics — were floated, but none of them are confirmed by the parties involved. At the same time, casting Black superheroes has a long history of its own, from Falcon (1969) to Miles Morales (2011), and the article doesn’t make clear that diverse casting itself is a separate issue from the criticism of this particular consulting involvement.

    21AnonymousSep 15, 2026 10:47
    Re: #19
There's a lot of variation within both pancake and Fresnel lenses, you know.
Pancake lenses inevitably dim the image, and since they stack more lens elements, some models get really bad ghosting.
It's a shame when a pancake-lens headset skips diopter adjustment too, since that means bolting on extra corrective lenses.
It also cuts into the effective field of view when there's no head tracking.

PSVR2 is actually a solid VR HMD.
The HMD I mainly use is also wired, so that part's no different.
The real gap is tracking accuracy — Lighthouse base stations versus camera tracking.
With camera tracking, a room full of monitors/screens can throw off tracking fast enough to make you queasy in no time.
Frame will probably have the same issue, so you'll need to drape it in some colorful Zelda-print cloth or something.
Also it's OLED, and even though it's Fresnel the effective field of view is wide, and it gets even better with that one fan-made tool everyone uses.

Whoever's making Steam hardware will probably have their whole division shut down within a few years.

They probably made this because the platform itself is raking in insane profits, but there's no real demand for this and it's probably running at a loss.
There probably won't be a new Steam Deck either.

Even if selling out makes it look popular, that's just because they never really mass-produced it.
Even the best-selling Steam Deck has still only sold around 6 million units worldwide.
Factor in the development costs for something like this, and the profit margin has to be razor-thin.

You say it's only sold around 6 million units, but
they were probably never planning to sell it at that kind of massive scale to begin with.
Are you comparing it to the scale of console hardware or something?

If it's not as small and easy to just throw on as a pair of sunglasses, I don't even want to use it anymore.

    Re: #47
That's fine for MR or AR, but that kind of setup falls flat for VR since there's no sense of immersion.
Even in this review, there are comments like "this sucks!" over just a little light leaking in beside the nose.
If you try to make a glasses-style VR headset, you end up with something like the original MeganeX.
And when the usability turns out bad, it evolves into something like the current MeganeX.

    Re: #47
As long as it's VR, that's just not realistic.
Securing a wide field of view, blocking outside light, and keeping it from slipping —
you can't pull that off with a sunglasses-style shape.
    69AnonymousSep 15, 2026 11:52
Re: #47 probably isn't being literal — they likely just mean it needs to be that lightweight and casual to be worth using.

Having the headset clamp tight on your face also contributes to motion sickness, you know.
The arpara launch unit was brutal lol

It's less about getting bored and more that it's just physically exhausting.
Even with the Pico 4, it got rough after about 30 minutes.
What I want most from this one is better comfort/fit, but even then I'd just be happy if 30 minutes turned into an hour.
I don't think headaches or motion-sickness nausea will ever hit zero.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Steam Frame is Valve’s new VR headset, notable for supporting both PC streaming and standalone operation. In the thread, some questioned why a Steam peripheral would even need standalone mode, but that can be read as an extension of Valve’s push to bring ARM support to SteamOS via the Steam Deck — aimed at delivering lightweight indie titles even to users who only own low-powered devices. Reception to the specs — price, field of view (officially up to 110 degrees), and the pancake lenses — was largely positive. Still, pointing to the Steam Deck’s official cumulative worldwide sales of only around 6 million units, there’s persistent skepticism about whether the VR-only hardware market is even big enough to be profitable. It’s easy to mistake how fast it sold out for proof of popularity, when it may simply reflect limited production numbers.

  • Most Switch 2 Games Turn Out to Be “Key Cards,” Sparking Debate Over Long-Term Playability

After buying a Nintendo Switch 2, an illustrator posted their disappointment upon discovering that most of the games they’d picked up were “key cards” — cartridges that don’t actually contain the game data itself. A key card only stores licensing/authentication info; playing the game requires a separate download, raising fears that the games could become unplayable if Nintendo’s distribution service ever shuts down. The post was picked up on 5channel’s “Hardware & Industry” board (nicknamed “Geha,” short for *geemu hard* — game hardware), where posters debated the fact that Nintendo still offers re-downloads for old 3DS and Wii U purchases, and whether retailers are limiting key-card stock simply because game file sizes have grown too large.

    2AnonymousSep 15, 2026 09:41
You can still download Wii Virtual Console games to this very day. "Once the distribution service ends you can't download it anymore" — what Sony-verse is this guy living in?
    6AnonymousSep 15, 2026 09:46
That's an ugly bit of misleading spin. Even if future re-downloads for the 3DS or Wii U eventually stop, whatever's already installed on the console keeps working fine. He's fabricating a scenario where it's suddenly game over the moment authentication fails.

Re: #18 Before worrying about a console's lifespan 20 or 30 years from now, maybe worry about your own lifespan first. There's no guarantee you'll even be alive in 30 years.

Re: #18 Is that only true for Nintendo?

Been thinking about this lately — even buying the packaged game data doesn't mean much when like 90% of games are buggy unless you patch them anyway.

Re: #7 Re: #24 All the more reason it's fine to keep dreaming of a standalone, offline world forever — a little escapism for the end times.

Younger people don't even bother going out to buy games anymore. It's basically just grandpas and grandmas in their 40s and up who still do.

    16AnonymousSep 15, 2026 09:56
I wonder which will happen first: today's cartridges physically wearing out, or the download service getting discontinued? Even the 3DS still lets you re-download to this day, after all.
    22AnonymousSep 15, 2026 09:58
Re: #16 A disc, maybe — but this is a cartridge we're talking about. Compared to an online service, which lasts what, ten years at most, cartridges will easily outlast that with room to spare. Exhibit A: Famicom carts are still being traded secondhand to this day.

So are you actually digging out your Famicom, GameCube, or Wii U and playing them every single day, then? It's a mystery why people cling to stuff they'll never actually use.

Re: #50 Sorry, not every day, but I did spend this summer playing Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance on the GameCube… And soon I'm going to transfer my save to the Wii and play Radiant Dawn…
    60AnonymousSep 15, 2026 10:25
For the Switch and Switch 2, even if your console breaks, as long as you bought the digital version, can't you just link your account to a new console and re-download from your purchase history? Am I wrong about that? Sure, decades from now downloading might not be possible anymore, but still.
    68AnonymousSep 15, 2026 10:29
Re: #60 You say downloading might not be possible decades from now, but ask yourself how many people are still playing PS2, Dreamcast, or GameCube on the actual original hardware today…

    81AnonymousSep 15, 2026 10:40
The ideal: keep the physical copy on hand because you want to play it again someday. The reality: farsightedness, declining stamina and motivation from aging, and shifting tastes mean you won't even feel like playing it anymore.
    91AnonymousSep 15, 2026 10:49
Same goes for games that ship on one disc but require a mandatory extra download. Re: #81 Even a game you used to love can feel off in the controls when you replay it now. You'd probably end up thinking "I'll wait for a port or remaster" — though honestly you'd probably just buy it and let it sit unplayed anyway.
    83AnonymousSep 15, 2026 10:41
Meanwhile… the PS5 did away with discs entirely, leaving you with nothing but a rental license — meaning you can no longer actually own your games.

Re: #83 Coming from a crowd that's been pirating downloads left and right, suddenly posing as physical-media purists now seems pretty suspicious.

Re: #1 Asked an AI, and here's what it said 🥺

    3. Regarding "re-downloading" software you've already purchased: even if the developer goes bankrupt and "new sales" of the game end on the store, as long as you already paid for and own that game, "re-downloading" is generally still possible. As long as Nintendo's own distribution infrastructure is still running, you can re-download anytime from your purchase history. However, if "Nintendo's service itself (the Nintendo eShop) shuts down completely," as with the 3DS or Wii U, then re-downloading becomes impossible for everyone, regardless of the publisher.
    106AnonymousSep 15, 2026 11:11
Re: #90 Wait, has the 3DS/Wii U eShop actually shut down? I feel like re-downloading still works.
    107AnonymousSep 15, 2026 11:12
Re: #106 You can't make new purchases anymore, but re-downloading still works. They've announced it will stop eventually, but there's no set date for that yet.
    95AnonymousSep 15, 2026 11:00
Whatever you say about the distribution service, even physical game cards these days are unplayable without a patch anyway, and what actually vanishes when a console breaks is your save data. With your account, you can just repair or rebuy the console and re-download. I always figured the real root issue here was storage capacity.
    97AnonymousSep 15, 2026 11:02
Re: #95 Right, it's fundamentally a capacity issue. Small-capacity titles sell fine even as key cards. But for big-capacity key-card titles, retailers seem wary and appear to be limiting how much stock they bring in.
    100AnonymousSep 15, 2026 11:04
Key cards have basically become the norm now, so there'll probably be less and less need to even label them as such going forward.
    102AnonymousSep 15, 2026 11:07
Re: #100 Honestly, Nintendo should've just made everything a key card from the start. Still having regular game cards around too is way too half-hearted.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

A “key card” (キーカード) stores only licensing information on the cartridge itself, with the actual game data downloaded separately — an approach that’s become more common as game file sizes have ballooned. Retailers are believed to want to avoid stocking large quantities of expensive-to-produce cartridges for high-capacity titles, and posters in the thread pointed to storage capacity as the underlying driver. As for long-term preservation, Nintendo has a track record of continuing to offer re-downloads for the old 3DS and Wii U eShops even after new sales ended — meaning the end of active distribution doesn’t automatically mean a game becomes unplayable right away. That said, Nintendo has confirmed that re-downloads will eventually become impossible once those services shut down completely, and no date for that has been set. The gap between the reassurance of holding a physical cartridge and the reality of still depending on a download server appears to be exactly what fueled the reaction to this post.
