PS5 Pro Resale Prices Blow Past ¥220,000 as New Stock Vanishes Amid GTA6 Buying Frenzy

The story

Used PS5 Pro prices in Japan have spiked to an eye-watering ¥220,000-plus, even as new units remain sold out everywhere. Overseas, major retailers like GameStop have repriced used units at $1,399 — $500 above the console’s suggested retail price, which itself was already hiked this year from $750 to $900. Thread debate split between two theories on what’s driving the shortage: pent-up demand ahead of the still-unreleased “GTA6,” or demand driven by buyers wanting the console for illegal “jailbroken” emulator use.

GameStop has repriced all digital-edition PS5 Pro units (used) at $1,399 on its own site — a $500 markup over the suggested retail price set by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

It’s not just GameStop, either: other major retailers including Best Buy and Walmart have also been confirmed raising used and refurbished prices to the same level, with new units listed as sold out across the board.

The console’s suggested retail price itself was also raised this year, from $750 to $900 — and even accounting for that, this still counts as a massive price surge.

Weekly shipments barely crack triple digits and they call that 'demand'?

Honestly, anyone who talks about this while leaving that part out is basically a PlayStation fanboy.

Is stock getting diverted overseas, or can they just not build them because memory prices are through the roof? (´・ω・`)

Re: #4
There's none overseas either.
Storage must be the bottleneck.
5AnonymousOct 8, 2026 09:20
Failing to have enough hardware ready for what might be the biggest game launch ever—isn't that just pure incompetence?
6AnonymousOct 8, 2026 09:22
Sony should just put out a PS5 Pro 2 Dash for ¥200,000.
8AnonymousOct 8, 2026 09:23
Japanese units probably come with restrictions, so Xbox—which might work with both overseas and Japanese versions—seems like it'd actually have more demand.
9AnonymousOct 8, 2026 09:25
They just can't make more because every unit built is a loss lol

The Japanese PS5 isn't raising prices only because they still have domestic stock—once that sells through, they'll jack up the price too.

Are there really that many people willing to blow serious money on a Zen 2 chip that's just been clocked up a bit?
Looks like nothing more than their usual manufactured-scarcity marketing to me.

And yet over on 'Geha' (the console-war forums), this thing's supposedly the unpopular hardware.

Just ramp up production already…

Re: #91
There's a rumor production ends this year, so it can't be helped.

Saw one for sale used the other day—¥120,000 (no box though)

Re: #93
By today's standards that's a steal.
It'll probably sell fast.

Actually, how many people who already own a PS5 are even upgrading to the Pro right now?
I'm not having any issues with my base model, so I'm not planning to switch.

Re: #95
I upgraded myself, but if you're not bothered by anything while actually playing games, there's no real need to switch.
Stuff like QSSR has shown up too, so in terms of value for money, the standard model is clearly still the best.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The PS5 Pro has been reported as being in short supply ever since launch, and its suggested retail price was raised this year from $750 to $900. On top of that, used prices have now been marked up even further, and the thread’s central dispute is over what’s actually driving the increase. One camp points to buying demand anticipating the long-delayed “GTA6,” while another argues the real driver is demand for illegal “jailbroken” emulator use — and no consensus has been reached. One point readers may easily misread is that a spike in used prices doesn’t directly benefit the manufacturer; commenters in the thread themselves noted that “the maker doesn’t profit from used sales.” It’s also worth keeping in mind that domestic yen prices and overseas dollar prices aren’t directly comparable, given differences in exchange rates and region-specific regulations.
