  • Sony and Nintendo Use Different Accounting Standards — 5ch Reacts: ‘You Can’t Compare Numbers That Aren’t Comparable’

A thread on the gaming hardware/industry board (nicknamed “Geha”) pointed out differences in how Sony and Nintendo handle accounting in their earnings reports. The starting point was the observation that Nintendo excludes download-only titles from its sales tallies, while Sony effectively treats the PlayStation Store as a “retailer,” letting it book digital sales revenue as its own. Posters argued back and forth over whether this discrepancy makes Sony’s operating margin look better than it really is, with others countering that Nintendo’s operating profit in absolute terms still exceeds Sony’s regardless. The discussion also expanded into the apparent contradiction of studio closures and layoffs continuing even as earnings are reported as strong.

    Re: #1
But the operating profit figure itself doesn't change, so Nintendo is still coming out behind either way.
Also, this would mean Nintendo's operating margin ends up looking even lower.

    Re: #10
That's exactly the point — don't compare numbers that can't be compared.

    >But the operating profit figure itself doesn't change, so Nintendo is still coming out behind either way.

Sure, fine, but you'll at least admit that since the Switch launched, Sony has only beaten Nintendo on operating profit for the last year and a half — and was behind for most of that time?
    18AnonymousSep 16, 2026 14:24
This is one reason Sony wants to push digital downloads —
if everything goes digital-only, the earnings numbers just keep looking better and better.

    Of course, that only makes the numbers look better;
they'll still do layoffs and cut Kojima loose regardless.
    24AnonymousSep 16, 2026 14:28
Sony's earnings are supposedly booming, so why are they cutting so hard they even pulled the plug on funding Kojima's studio? 😅

    30AnonymousSep 16, 2026 14:29
But if Nintendo — with its low digital ratio — counted things the same way as Sony, wouldn't they still come out behind? 🤔

Nobody can even properly explain what "digital ratio" actually means anyway.
Ask the guy claiming "PS has an 80% digital ratio!" whether that means Wilds sold 4 million copies in Japan, and he snaps back that no, that's not what it means.

Apparently it's because they treat the PlayStation Store as if it were a retailer.

In other words, since SIE sets the price, they count the whole sale amount as revenue.

Let's say Sony really is as wildly successful as the Sony fanboys ("障ちゃん," a mocking 5ch nickname for overzealous Sony fans) claim.
Even so, how do you explain the studio closures, cutting director Kojima loose, and then having the resulting flagship title turn out with quality like Wolverine's?
Come on, fanboys, care to answer?

Download-only games with no physical release aren't counted in Nintendo's sales figures ← got it

So no matter how well Suika Game sells, it never shows up in the earnings numbers ← got it

They're releasing a physical version of Suika Game ← wait, so what happens now?!
    158AnonymousSep 16, 2026 15:11
    Re: #154
Well, the physical copies would count at least.
    161AnonymousSep 16, 2026 15:12
    Re: #154
    Unclear.
It'll probably be either counting sales only from the physical release onward, or retroactively counting the whole period.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Nintendo’s and Sony’s financial disclosures count game software sales differently. Nintendo publishes combined package-plus-download sales figures only for titles that also had a physical release, while titles that stayed digital-only throughout — like “Suika Game,” mentioned in the thread — have never been reflected in the officially published cumulative sales totals. Sony, meanwhile, uses an accounting treatment that handles the PlayStation Store as an effective sales channel rather than its own product, meaning digital sales of third-party titles can also be booked as Sony’s own revenue. The thread’s central debate was over how this structural difference makes comparing operating margins difficult, and how the term “digital ratio” gets thrown around without ever being clearly defined. Opinions were also split on how to interpret the continued studio closures and layoffs alongside reportedly strong earnings, pointing to an industry reality that can’t be summed up by a simple good-or-bad performance narrative.

    Re: #94
Huh? Go smash 1,000 terracotta warriors first before you say that.
The fun in this game is entirely the loot-grinding (hack-and-slash/ARPG loot loop).

    Background and Key Talking Points

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty was developed by Team Ninja, a studio under Koei Tecmo, and released in 2023 as a dark Three Kingdoms action RPG — a sister title in the same lineage as the Nioh series. It’s known for parry-focused combat and a world overrun by demonic yokai, and the fact that it was a day-one Xbox Game Pass release from launch is once again a talking point for this sequel. Opinions in the thread split mainly over two things: how the original game itself is remembered (with “it can’t top Nioh” and “it was genuinely fun” voices coexisting), and the base-capture-to-lower-morale progression system along with the repeated post-launch balance changes (nerfs). In particular, the early difficulty of the boss Zhang Liang keeps coming up across multiple posts as something people remember from the demo days. The original game also had login-related bugs reported on Steam in the past, so PC-version stability is once again one of the focal points this time around.

With Nintendo’s new simulation RPG “Fire Emblem: Bansenkou” about to launch, predictions about its Metascore were heating up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (aka “Geha”). No official score has been posted yet, but posters kept measuring it against the PS5-exclusive “Marvel’s Wolverine,” which holds a Metascore of 77. That's rough. Not acceptable for a game with a budget in the tens of billions of yen.

    Background and Key Points

The term “NBP,” which shows up constantly in the thread, is internet slang — a sarcastic coinage implying that Nintendo titles tend to get review scores higher than their content deserves. It’s not an official scoring standard or any real system. The comparison title, “Marvel’s Wolverine,” is a PS5 exclusive with a Metacritic score of 77. Online discussion of game reviews often carries persistent suspicion toward developers’ conduct and reviewers’ standards, rather than focusing on the games themselves, and unverified rumors tend to take on a life of their own in these spaces. This thread, too, is a back-and-forth of hope and anxiety ahead of any official score announcement, and the actual reception after launch may well turn out differently from what’s being predicted here.

An image circulating on social media claiming that PS5-exclusive title Marvel’s Wolverine topped 2 million units sold in its first week set off a firestorm on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (nicknamed “Geha”). What began as ammunition for mocking Switch fans quickly spiraled into a fight over whether the number was even real, as posters pointed out that neither Insomniac nor Sony had made any such announcement and speculated the image itself might be AI-generated. With the game’s development budget reportedly topping 30 billion yen, there was also keen interest in whether it could actually turn a profit.

Generally, first-week sales make up a big chunk of total game sales.
First week 5 million → lifetime 12-15 million
First week 1 million → lifetime 4-5 million

    At $35 a unit, breakeven on a $1 billion(-ish) full-price budget would need 10 million units sold.
There's zero chance of that with just 2 million on day one.

According to a leak from Insomniac, if Wolverine doesn't sell 6 million copies in its first 12 months, Marvel may end its long-running partnership with Insomniac and scrap the planned X-Men game.

I think 6 million is achievable. If sales fall short, they'll probably push the game with steep discounts. But with the leaked development budget reportedly at $305 million, even 6 million feels low. The game might need to sell 8-10 million copies before it starts turning a profit. That seems like a stretch.

    Background and Points of Contention

On the Hardware/Industry board (“Geha”), comparisons of “first-week sales” routinely spark fights, since the counting method — shipped vs. sold-through, digital included or not — can differ, which often makes the reliability of the numbers themselves the real battleground. Marvel’s Wolverine, the title at the center of this dispute, is reportedly a massive production with a development budget exceeding 30 billion yen, and the thread also cited a leak claiming Marvel could end its partnership with Insomniac and cancel a planned X-Men game if Wolverine fails to sell 6 million copies within 12 months — a detail that only sharpened interest in the sales figures given how high the breakeven point appears to be. Meanwhile, the “2 million in the first week” image that started it all has not been confirmed by any official statement from Insomniac or Sony, and several posters raised suspicions that it may have been fabricated with generative AI. An image of unverified authenticity taking on a life of its own on social media, with discussion running ahead of it as if it were established fact, is a pattern that shows up again and again in online chatter about game sales figures.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt/summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (“Geha”)) thread “[Bad News for Nintendo Piggies] Wolverine Breaks 2 Million in First Week!!“.

  • New Wolverine Game Accused of Being a ‘Smear Campaign’ Target — 5ch: ‘This Is What Happens When Conspiracy Thinking Goes Too Far’

Following the release of the new Marvel game “Wolverine,” review scores from major gaming outlets came in low across the board, prompting gaming influencer “Pokaos” to claim on X (formerly Twitter) that “the game may have been review-bombed in a smear campaign by legacy media outlets” — sparking discussion on 5ch’s console-war board. While some pointed to IGN’s score of 60 as evidence, other posters who’d actually played the game pushed back, saying things like “it’s more fun than I expected” and “I’ve got no complaints about the Metacritic score of 77.” Rather than debating the game itself, the thread mostly argued over Pokaos’s credibility, given his track record of alternately praising and bashing Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft — opinions split between those questioning his motives and those defending him.

Once you actually play it, it stops bothering you. The story explains that it's Wolverine's sense of smell being visualized, and the tracking line doesn't even show up on every stage. The people making noise about this clearly aren't gamers who've actually played it — they're something else entirely, just watching videos and criticizing.

    Re: #100
Exactly. He's mostly playing on PS5 anyway.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Underlying this story is a tension familiar to the gaming industry: the gap between review scores published by major outlets (aggregated on sites like Metacritic) and how a game actually feels to the people who’ve bought it. The thread cites specific numbers — a Metacritic score of 77, an IGN score of 60 — showing that critics themselves are divided. At the same time, the term “review-bombing” technically refers to an organized effort by a specific group to deliberately tank a score, but no such evidence was presented in this thread; it remains purely one influencer’s personal speculation. As is typical for 5ch’s console-war board, discussion drifted away from the game’s actual quality and toward “which platform is this guy shilling for,” with much of the back-and-forth centered on whether Pokaos’s claims lined up with his past statements. What readers may easily miss is that the thread’s energy was really about the reviewer’s credibility rather than the game’s quality — the game’s actual merits were left unresolved.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Console Wars)) thread “Pokaos: ‘Wolverine may have been review-bombed in a smear campaign by legacy media. Worst thing in gaming history’”.

  • New PS5 exclusive Wolverine goes viral after video shows it can be beaten without touching the controller

A video capturing moments in Sony’s new action game Wolverine where the game keeps progressing without the player touching the controller has gone viral on social media, sparking discussion on 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board. Early comments suggested it might be due to an accessibility feature, but posters in the thread pointed out that hands-free progression still happened even with every assist feature switched off, leading many to conclude this couldn’t simply be chalked up to a settings mistake. Posts also drew comparisons to the game’s reported $300+ million development budget and the earlier FF16 PR controversy, with the discussion extending to comparisons with Forza Horizon 6’s self-driving feature.

I gave up on Seasons and just cleared it by grabbing all the treasure cars, mascots, and every road
Gave up on collecting every scoreboard though

Background and key points of this discussion

Auto-QTE is usually included as an accessibility feature for players who find manual controls difficult. The point of contention this time was whether hands-free progression still happens even with that feature turned off — within the thread, opinions split between those saying “it’s off by default” and those saying “it happened even with every assist turned off,” and no consensus was reached. Behind this lies a string of controversies surrounding Sony’s PS5 exclusive lineup: the backlash over FF16’s PR video, the early shutdown of the big-budget live-service title Concord, Kojima Productions’ apparent split from Sony, and other incidents that have piled up over the past few years — much of which shaped the reaction to this video as “here we go again.” It’s worth noting that what setting actually caused this has yet to be verified at the source, and the facts aren’t fully settled based on 5ch posts alone.

*This article is compiled by excerpting and summarizing the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Sony’s Wolverine — “no need to touch the controller” becomes a meme 😆😆😆.”

  • Wolverine Racks Up a 4.85-Star Rating on the PlayStation Store, Tops 12,000 Reviews

The action game Marvel’s Wolverine has already topped 12,000 reviews on the PlayStation Store with a stellar 4.85-star average, sparking discussion on 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (“Geha”) board. There’s precedent for this kind of thing: Monster Hunter Wilds got a lukewarm reception on Steam but scored above 4 stars on the PS version. Thread posters debated the mechanics behind the ratings, with some arguing “PlayStation users never leave harsh reviews” and others countering “only people who bought the digital download can review at all, so of course it skews positive.” Still, posters who’d actually played the game shared genuinely favorable impressions of the graphics and controls, showing the reaction wasn’t purely a numbers debate.

    Review counts:
PS (store only): 24,491 reviews, ★4.60
    Steam: 3,108 reviews, Mixed

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The PlayStation Store’s review system generally only lets users who’ve purchased the digital download post a review. Unlike Steam, this makes it less likely for complaints tied to varying hardware setups to slip in — but it also skews the pool toward people who already committed to buying, which tends to push scores higher. The thread’s go-to example, Monster Hunter Wilds, drew a wave of complaints on Steam over low-spec PC performance issues and settled at a “mixed” rating there, while the PS version of the same game scored highly — so this kind of cross-platform rating gap isn’t unique to this case. At the same time, posters voiced distrust of Metascore and IGN’s review standards (bringing up the story of a reviewer said to have been fired over a spiteful review written in anger at disc drives being dropped), reflecting lingering skepticism toward review scores in general. That said, posters who’d actually played the game also shared favorable impressions of the controls, graphics, and content volume — a detail that’s easy to miss amid the pure numbers debate.

  • Xbox Rep Denies Game Pass Changes: “No Changes to Day One Either” — 5ch Reacts With Skepticism

An Xbox spokesperson has commented that there are no changes or new plans for Game Pass, and that there’s no change to the “Day One” arrangement that lets eligible titles be played starting on release day. The comment comes after a string of layoffs across the Xbox camp and Phil Spencer’s departure, and reactions on 5ch were split between skepticism (“who’d believe that now?”) and a more measured reading (“doesn’t this just mean already-announced titles stay as they are?”). The thread also touched on speculation about Persona 6’s release window, along with a correction of a rumor that the next-gen device “Helix” wouldn’t include a Steam store.

Even if it's long, nobody's reading it unless you keep it to three lines max.

Background and key points of this discussion

Xbox’s Game Pass has been sold on offering “Day One” access, letting eligible titles be played starting on their release date. But following the underwhelming performance of flagship title Call of Duty’s latest entry, layoffs across multiple studios, and Phil Spencer’s departure, skepticism had been growing over whether this arrangement would continue going forward. In the thread, opinions on the rep’s comment were split: some read it as applying only to already-announced titles, with future unannounced titles possibly excluded, while others took the lack of any specific caveat to mean the status quo remains unchanged — the two readings never quite converged, which stood out. Alongside this, some posters cited an overseas report claiming the next-gen device “Helix” wouldn’t integrate PC storefronts, though another poster who looked into it corrected this as false, leaving the thread awash in rumors of mixed accuracy.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “[Bad News for PS Fanboys] Xbox Rep: “No Changes or New Plans for Game Pass, and No Changes to Day One Either?”.”

  • PS6 Could Slash Game Sizes by 85%? 150GB Games Down to 25GB

AMD’s “Neural Texture Compression” technology, expected to be built into the PS6, could reportedly cut game texture data by up to 85%. Do the math and a roughly 150GB title would shrink to around 25GB. While the thread showed some excitement about the technology itself, plenty of skepticism came up too, drawing on the experience of PS5’s launch-era promise of “zero load times,” which turned out to be limited in practice. There was also discussion about whether the processing happens in real time or during installation, since it’s easily confused with network-dependent streaming.

PS6 to cut game sizes by up to 85%? 150GB games could shrink to about 25GB

It’s been reported that the next-generation PlayStation 6 console may include hardware supporting AMD’s “Neural Texture Compression,” potentially cutting game data sizes significantly. Compression efficiency for high-resolution textures in particular is said to improve greatly, which could ease the storage capacity crunch that’s a problem with current games.

Smaller file sizes means they're climbing down the tech ladder, doesn't it?

    PlayStation's finished…
    12AnonymousSep 15, 2026 22:29
In NVIDIA's sample there are two approaches — handling it in real time, or decompressing/converting it at load time. The latter would work on current hardware too.
    13AnonymousSep 15, 2026 22:29
Just saying "PS6" already makes me question your sanity
It's the same level of hopeless delusion as "I got abducted by a UFO" or "I caught a Tsuchinoko!" (a mythical snake-like cryptid)
Anyone humoring this is a bit off too
    14AnonymousSep 15, 2026 22:30
    No way, no way
I mean, it's Sony hardware we're talking about
    16AnonymousSep 15, 2026 22:30
    Huh, guess I don't need a PS5 then
Might as well wait for the PS6
    20AnonymousSep 15, 2026 22:33
They said load times would disappear on PS5… did they, though?

Pretty much only noticeable in Spider-Man 😞
    32AnonymousSep 15, 2026 22:39
When it comes to compression, storage capacities went up and users stopped complaining, so they weren't as eager about it as before and the tech stalled out

Storage prices are through the roof now, so let's get serious about it!
    74AnonymousSep 15, 2026 23:40
    Re: #32
Images, video, and audio are usually already compressed at the format level — JPEG, MPEG, and so on — so compressing them further didn't do much

I think this "Neural whatever" thing from NVIDIA is a technology that uses AI to change the actual data storage format into something completely different from the conventional one, to cut down on size
This is probably AMD's version of that
    39AnonymousSep 15, 2026 22:43
Ghost of Tsushima had (almost) no load times. Well, it didn't have them on PC either, so it's not really thanks to the PS5

Even back on PS4 that load time was monstrous (in a bad way)

Switch 2 and Switch 3 are absolutely never gonna pull this off.
They're a generation behind and underpowered.

    91AnonymousSep 16, 2026 00:07
If they really can compress game software like this
Sony will probably cap the PS6's storage at under 500GB
Could even be as low as 256GB if they're stingy
    93AnonymousSep 16, 2026 00:09
    Re: #91
I mean, if it has to be PS5-backward-compatible, this tech can't be used with PS5 software, so it's not like the PS6 automatically becomes cheaper

If they cut the PS6's storage or memory below the PS5's, you'd only be able to install one or two big PS5 games, or things would stop running from lack of VRAM

Well, it's still an emerging technology, so if they're releasing the PS6 within 5 years, I personally think they shouldn't make the memory or storage just barely better than the PS5's
    92AnonymousSep 16, 2026 00:08
Wait, so it's streaming after all?
We've had nothing but connection problems up till now
    95AnonymousSep 16, 2026 00:12
    Re: #92
    No, that's not it
It uses the GPU's AI performance to upscale to 4K or 8K while unpacking the data

The next-gen AMD GPU will have a dedicated AI processing chip built in
    97AnonymousSep 16, 2026 00:17
    Re: #95

    Re: #97
"Streaming" here means loading and displaying the data you need in real time, rather than data pre-loaded into memory

It's not talking about cloud streaming

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Neural Texture Compression is an AI-driven texture compression technology reportedly developed first by NVIDIA, and AMD is said to be moving to include similar functionality in its next-generation GPUs. One easily misunderstood point is that this technology mainly targets still-image textures, and has little effect on data that’s already compressed, like video or audio. Also, as explained in the thread, the term “streaming” here doesn’t refer to network-based cloud communication — it refers to the process of loading and reconstructing needed data from local storage in real time, which is often confused with connection-dependent technology. It’s also worth noting that there’s been no official announcement about the PS6 itself yet, so this remains in the realm of reporting and speculation.

  • Japan Game Awards 2026 Grand Prize Goes to ‘Poko a Pokémon’ — 5ch: ‘Way Too Obvious a Choice’

The selection of “Poko a Pokémon” as the Grand Prize winner of the Japan Game Awards 2026 became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. Many posters in the thread backed the win, saying things like “way too obvious a choice” and “of course — it’s got both the sales and the acclaim,” while others pushed back with comments like “anyone who actually knows games would pick Bananza” and “nothing tops Bananza.” Some also championed Death Stranding 2, and opinions split over what criteria should decide the award and how much domestic sales should factor in.

    Way too obvious a choice
It's got overwhelming popularity and polish.
    6AnonymousSep 15, 2026 19:47
Of course it won — it's got both the sales and the critical acclaim to back it up.

If you actually know games, it's Bananza, but
I guess it can't be helped since it's a fan vote.

If Bananza's protagonist were a Pokémon, it would've won the Grand Prize.
But at the end of the day it's just a gorilla.

Koei Tecmo (developer) — good move teaming up with Nintendo/Pokémon.
    52AnonymousSep 15, 2026 19:53
Isn't Palworld basically a watered-down Poko a Pokémon with a Metascore of 79, made for poor people who don't own a Switch 2?

    Palworld won nothing.

It's hilarious how people are losing it over Death Stranding 2 not winning lol

It's the title that triggered the end of Kojima's contract,
so no matter how you flip it, it's not a masterpiece lol
    It didn't sell, after all

Oh, let me say it again

Death Stranding 2… did not sell

    That's the reason.

    117AnonymousSep 15, 2026 20:04
    Re: #107
Nobody but the Geha board is even making noise about Palworld.
    119AnonymousSep 15, 2026 20:05
What exactly are you so bitter about? What outcome would've satisfied you?

    Background and Points of Debate

The Japan Game Awards are presented by CESA during the Tokyo Game Show, and because the selection process combines expert judging with fan voting, results tend to reflect domestic sales figures and buzz. “Bananza,” which came up repeatedly in the thread as a comparison, drew praise for its polish, but reportedly fell short in domestic sales volume — a gap that fueled reactions like “if it were purely about quality, a different title would’ve won.” Death Stranding 2, which was also a hot topic around the same time, had some supporters too, but it reportedly struggled with domestic sales and ultimately didn’t take home an award. Much of the disagreement in the thread stems less from the outcome itself than from differing views on the “popularity contest” nature built into the fan-voting portion of the award.
