  • Mercari Stock Plunges 30% in a Month, Hit by Pokémon Card Listing Ban and Resale Backlash

Mercari’s stock closed trading on September 16 down ¥247 (6.39%) from the previous day at ¥3,621. That marks a roughly 29% drop in about a month from its year-to-date high of ¥5,111 set on August 10, following three sharp sell-offs since the start of September. What drew attention during this downturn was the ban on listing the latest Pokémon Card series, along with criticism over resale and misuse. On 5channel threads, users traded observations that even after the ban policy was announced, a search still turned up the targeted items for sale, alongside the view that Mercari can’t bring itself to enforce strict regulations since scalpers are paying customers too. Criticism that the platform has become a breeding ground for criminal proceeds coexisted with an investor’s-eye view that over-regulating would cut into sales and hurt the stock price.

If Mercari couldn't be used for criminal activity, the company's value would plummet

    Background and Points of Debate

Mercari is a platform that facilitates consumer-to-consumer flea-market transactions, and since how strictly it restricts listings directly affects the volume of goods in circulation and its transaction totals, investors tend to react sharply to regulation-related news. What split opinion in the thread was how effective the ban actually is: some pointed out that even after the “ban” was announced, a search still turned up the targeted items for sale, raising doubts about enforcement — alongside the opposing view that “if they actually crack down hard, sales will drop, and that’s bad for the stock.” Concerns that flea-market apps are being used to cash out stolen goods or launder money have circulated in some corners for a while, but Mercari itself denies any involvement, and it’s worth noting the posts in this thread are ultimately just speculation on an anonymous message board. The original article doesn’t attribute the stock’s decline to any single measure, and the breakdown behind each of the three recent sharp drops hasn’t been made clear.

  • Capcom’s Livestream Light on New Info — 5ch: ‘Only About 8,000 Watching’

Capcom’s in-house livestream program “Capcom Spotlight,” which aired starting at 11:00 PM on September 16, 2026, drew reactions on 5ch’s hardware/industry board almost as soon as it began. Since most of the announcements covered titles that had already been revealed, comments saying “looks like there won’t be any surprises” appeared early on, leaving viewers who’d hoped for new Ace Attorney series info feeling let down. The fact that concurrent viewership stayed at around the 8,000 mark, along with the differing order in which platform logos appeared for Monster Hunter versus Dragon’s Dogma 2, also became talking points, with some comparing the show’s pacing to that of a Nintendo Direct.

I guess it's the overwhelming pacing that comes from sheer volume of content
When you try to carry a show solo with as little material as Capcom has, it just drags on forever, the pacing falls apart, and since nothing can be cut, they end up saying everything they wanted to say anyway

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Capcom Spotlight” is an irregularly held in-house livestream from Capcom, different in character from regularly scheduled shows like Nintendo Direct or PlayStation’s State of Play. Two main points drove the thread’s discussion. The first was “whether there was new information” — since most of the announced titles had already been reported elsewhere, comments saying “there’s no surprise” appeared early on. The second concerned production choices: some speculated about possible advertising agreements after noticing that the order in which the Nintendo and PS5 logos appeared varied by title for Monster Hunter and Dragon’s Dogma 2, but this was purely viewer speculation, not anything officially explained. Comments also weighed in on the concurrent viewer count (roughly in the 8,000s) and the skill of the show’s pacing, but it’s worth noting these are all subjective impressions from individual viewers, not an objective verdict on the broadcast’s quality.

On September 16, Square Enix released an update for the Steam version of Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon – A Slightly Nice Remaster. Other platforms will get the update as they become ready. On a 5ch hardware/industry (“geha”) board thread, many users asked why the fixes couldn’t have been made before release, given how soon after launch they arrived, while others noted that console versions face a certification process that delays updates, and the conversation also touched on comparisons with Shiren the Wanderer 6, which launched around the same time.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Steam version can receive patches from the developer at any time, but console versions have to clear each hardware maker’s certification process, which typically delays rollout anywhere from a few days to a few weeks — that structural difference is why thread posters singled the update out as “Steam-only” or said the “Switch version got pushed to the back of the line.” The exchanges in the thread suggest this update mainly improves diagonal-input responsiveness, while other issues — like the control freeze during level-ups — remain unfixed. The conversation later drifted toward comparisons with Shiren 6, likely because that similarly-themed title, released around the same time, offered a natural benchmark for polish; it’s worth noting that comments about pricing and quality reflect individual opinions rather than any official comparative data. Likewise, the recurring question of “why couldn’t this have been fixed before release” mostly comes from speculation by people without direct insight into the actual development and QA process, and no definitive conclusion was reached in the thread.

  • New Fire Emblem Scores All 9s in Famitsu Cross Review, No Perfect 10 — 5ch: ‘Same Score as a Trash Game, Says It All’

The scores for the new Fire Emblem (a Switch 2 exclusive) in Weekly Famitsu’s Cross Review have come out, with all four reviewers giving it 9 out of 10, for a combined total of 36/40 (90 on a 100-point scale). Famitsu has traditionally given special treatment to titles where multiple reviewers converge on a perfect 10, but this time, while all four reviewers matched each other at 9, nobody handed out a perfect score. On 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board, users compared the score to other titles like Wolverine (35/40) and Patlabor, and the discussion also turned to how scores for past Fire Emblem entries have trended, along with skepticism about Famitsu’s review standards themselves.

    Wolverine — 9,9,9,8

    Fire Emblem — 9,9,9,9

    Patlabor — 7,7,7,6

Wolverine kept getting flak even after release — the character's sexual preferences, using the voice actor's likeness for the model, the water effects, all of it. It's stuck in 'playable but a bit iffy' territory, though some disc[-related] activists are being way too loud and noisy about it.

As for that company, Good Smile is kind of a wildcard player in this space — so even if their own titles get rejected, it's no big deal for them, and Famitsu doesn't have to pull punches; they just give the honest score.

You really think there's substance to that? I'm not a fan of Patlabor since it's pretty shoddy, but let me say this as someone who can actually tell: they clearly cared about the mechs, and the designs are a faithful recreation of the originals. Also, From[Software] and whatever that Xeno-something game is have pretty shoddy mechs too — like they just bolted on a bunch of tiny blocks.

So the conditions for an honest score seem to be:
    ○ It's a publisher Famitsu/Kadokawa won't suffer any consequences for being truthful about
    ○ The game is bad enough that anyone who plays it would notice
Only when both line up do you actually get a real score.

Nah, Sacred Stones, Radiant Dawn, and Shadow Dragon are rough. Though Radiant Dawn feels like a god-tier game, at least up until partway through.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

In Famitsu’s Cross Review, four reviewers each score a game out of 10, for a combined total out of 40. An “all-perfect” result — where every reviewer gives a 10 — is exceedingly rare in the feature’s history and has traditionally been treated as a special honor. This time’s total of 36 (9 points × 4) technically converts to 90 out of 100, a high score on paper, but the thread’s attention went instead to the fact that not a single reviewer awarded a perfect 10, with users comparing it to Wolverine’s past score (35) and to scores from earlier entries in the series, while also voicing distrust in Famitsu’s scoring standards themselves. Famitsu’s numbers don’t always line up with how a game is actually received or how well it sells after release, so readers are cautioned against judging a game’s quality by the score alone.

Background and Key Points of This Story

The phrase “PS2-level graphics” is a long-running cliché on 5ch’s hardware/industry board (Geha), where console performance debates have raged for years — and part of what fueled this thread’s excitement was the irony of PlayStation loyalists getting hit with the very same insult they’ve long used against rival platforms. Developer Insomniac is known for the Spider-Man series, and while some posters speculated a link to Sony’s major layoffs the previous year, the only confirmed fact is that those layoffs did happen — any causal connection to this footage’s quality remains pure speculation within the thread. Alongside this, defenses arguing that “gameplay matters more than graphics” appeared side by side with criticism of the game’s unusually easy difficulty, showing the reaction wasn’t simply split into good versus bad.

  • Regretting Not Switching from PS5 to PC: 5ch Thread “I Want to Punch My Past Self”

A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board saw a PS5 owner pour out regret, saying “I should have switched to PC last year.” The poster explains that they seriously considered buying a PC last year, but held off and stuck with PS5 after Microsoft announced it would bring its exclusive titles to other platforms too. Since then, however, PC part prices have skyrocketed to nearly triple what they were, putting the build they wanted out of reach. Forza Horizon 6, which they’d been looking forward to, isn’t coming to PS5, and word that an anticipated Kojima title is heading to Xbox instead has left them lamenting, “I want to punch my past self.” The thread drew sympathy, along with advice to “just buy a cheap used PC now,” as well as debate over whether major titles’ PS5 releases are actually confirmed.

I've always bought the PS versions of my games, Switch doesn't get AAA blockbusters, and Xbox was never even an option to begin with — so once the exclusives disappeared, of course PS was the only real choice.

In the end MS basically waved the white flag and made even the studios they bought multiplat, so I figured PS5 was fine and passed on a PC last year.
Now all of a sudden they're going exclusive again and handing Kojima's game to MS — it makes no sense.
And seriously, what's even supposed to happen to all the physical games I've collected up to now?

If I'd known it would turn out like this I'd have genuinely bought a PC last year.
Why does this have to happen right after prices shot up to an insane degree?

That's just as true for Steam, Nintendo, Microsoft, or Epic.
GOG would be the exception, maybe.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This kind of “regret over missing the window to switch” tends to happen when two factors collide: soaring GPU and memory prices, and shifting exclusivity strategies from major platform holders. The poster’s reason for passing on a PC last year was that “the Microsoft camp abandoned exclusivity and went multiplatform” — but this time, as with the Kojima title, the opposite is happening, with exclusivity making a comeback, showing that platform strategy can flip more than once within a single year. The thread split between sympathy for the external factor of price spikes and harsher opinions along the lines of “isn’t this just self-inflicted from putting off the decision?” There’s also a point readers might easily misread: in response to a post claiming a “development executive confirmed” a certain title’s PS5 release, another poster pointed out that the actual authority to decide release platforms rests with the parent company — meaning a comment at an event or on social media isn’t the same as an official announcement.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “I’m a PS5 user, but honestly I seriously regret not just switching to PC sooner.”

  • ‘Bunny Garden’ TGS Exhibit List Shows PS5 Support, Sparking Authenticity Debate

An image circulating on social media claimed that the list of titles at Konami’s TGS 2026 booth showed “Switch 2/PS5” as the supported platforms for ‘Bunny Garden,’ sparking discussion on 5ch’s hardware/industry board. It was initially taken as evidence the game was “ditching Nintendo,” but a user who actually checked out the venue in person called it “fake news” and posted a photo to back that up. Others pushed back, noting that a Famitsu TGS feature article apparently mentions a PS5 version announcement for the original ‘Bunny Garden,’ leaving the thread split over what was actually true. Alongside the authenticity debate, users were also curious about the mechanics behind why other companies’ titles show up at Konami’s booth in the first place, since it isn’t their own distribution network.

Their games don't sell well enough to justify running their own distribution
They'd probably never survive on just the rare FromSoftware release alone

Background and Key Points of Debate

It’s not unusual for Konami to lend its distribution network to other companies’ titles for exhibitions — commenters in the thread pointed to past examples like the “Trails in the Sky” series. The core of this dispute is whether the “Switch 2/PS5” listing on the TGS exhibitor sheet should be read as a complete departure from Nintendo hardware or simply an added PS5 version of an existing release; on-site verification and citations of related articles have gone back and forth without settling the matter. What readers may easily get wrong is that, at this stage, there’s been no official announcement — it’s all speculation based on exhibit-sheet listings and circulated images, so this is a story that needs follow-up confirmation. Some speculated a link between the original title’s content restrictions and a PS5 release, but that too remains a single opinion within the thread with no supporting evidence.

  • GTA6: Even PS5 Owners Are Lukewarm — 5ch: “I Doubt Even 10% Will Actually Play It”

A thread appeared on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Geha)” board asking, “Are Nintendo fans supposed to just skip GTA6?” Replies included comments that even PS5 owners are only 50/50 on actually buying it, alongside harsh reviews from people who’d actually played the previous game, GTA5, saying things like “the missions don’t make any sense” and “it’s boring.” The discussion ended up splitting more over opinions of the game itself than over which console people owned. The thread also touched on PC play environments, whether mods are necessary, and the possibility of a Switch 2 release.

This game is just really talky to begin with.
It's clearly influenced by Tarantino, so the dialogue-driven scenes are apparently supposed to matter.

But even the Japanese version is subtitles-only, so you have to actually read them to know what's being said.
And most of that talking happens while you're driving, so you can't read the subtitles because you need to focus on driving.
That's one of the crappy parts about it too.
Anyway, just try it yourself and you'll see — it's not a normal game.

    *PS users, you mean.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Conflicts on the Geha board are typically framed around console rivalries, but what stands out this time is that the discussion centered on evaluations from people who’d actually played the previous game, GTA5. While GTA5 is widely regarded as a massive worldwide hit, the thread also featured specific complaints that could only come from actually playing it — things like “the point of the missions is hard to follow” and “you can’t read the subtitles while driving” — making this more than just a simple statement of likes and dislikes. As of this writing, there has been no official announcement on whether GTA6 will come to Switch 2, and the speculation in the thread remains just that — speculation. Some replies cite platform-specific sales figures, but no source or date is given for those figures, so the numbers shouldn’t be taken at face value.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Are Nintendo Fanboys Supposed to Just Skip GTA6?.”

  • Tekken’s Harada: “Japan’s Big Game Company Executives Don’t Play Prototypes or Finished Games”

Katsuhiro Harada, known for the Tekken series, said in an interview with VGC that he believes executives at major Japanese game companies “don’t play prototypes or finished games.” According to him, they attend meetings to discuss profit and loss and break-even points, but never actually touch game builds or give feedback on them — with the SNK Group being a clear exception. On 5ch, opinions split over how sweeping this claim was, with some saying a division of labor between management and creative staff is only natural, and others arguing that management decisions made without understanding the ground level are the reason for repeated failures.

Katsuhiro Harada suggested that executives at major Japanese game development companies “don’t play prototypes or finished versions” of the games their own companies make. He did, however, single out the SNK Group as a clear “exception” to this pattern.

In the VGC interview, Harada described the image he has of executives at major Japanese game developers. He explained that while they attend meetings to discuss profit and loss and break-even points, they never actually play the game builds themselves or give feedback on their content. The picture he paints is one where executives sit in on the numbers meetings but never touch the actual builds.

Harada then broadened the point to the upper management of the Japanese game industry as a whole, stating firmly, as his own view, that there’s no one there actually playing the games their companies make.

Surely some companies do play them — that's way too broad a generalization. And honestly, even setting aside whether they play games or not, it's obvious that game development and running a company require completely different skill sets. Just look at Director Kojima — when a developer gets too much power, they can end up ignoring deadlines entirely, which can be fatal for the business.

If they're discussing profit and loss without even knowing what kind of game is coming out, then when a title bombs, they can't figure out the reason themselves and point it out to the dev team — that pattern just keeps repeating. Isn't that how some publishers end up making it too late to fix things?
    39AnonymousSep 16, 2026 15:05
    Re: #15
I think management just needs to trust capable employees and make good use of them. Sure, there are companies where it's fine for the top to overturn development decisions on their own judgment. Either approach can work, so it feels off to flatly reject one of them.
    80AnonymousSep 16, 2026 15:20
    Re: #15
Isn't it the job of the producers and dev team leadership to explain to management and investors what kind of game they want to make next, in order to secure budget and staff? And investigating why a game didn't sell is handled by separate departments — the ones that gather user feedback and complaints, and market research — which exist apart from management.
That said, if the dev team, producers, customer service, and market research staff are all a bunch of untrustworthy liars whose written reports can't be relied on, or a bunch of talkers-only that nobody trusts internally because you never know what they'll do the moment you look away — then sure, management would get worried and start dropping by more often to have their say.

There are plenty of stories of CEOs personally scouting indie games — Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, all of them. Isn't 'the higher-ups don't play games' just a Bandai Namco thing?
    17AnonymousSep 16, 2026 14:58
This is the whining of the development head who's been putting out garbage Bandai Namco games for years.
    18AnonymousSep 16, 2026 14:58
"Management" isn't just the president — it includes sales too, and sales staff who don't play the games are nothing unusual. Honestly, this has always been a common story whenever dev teams and sales are at odds. And for what it's worth, sales tends to outrank game producers in the company hierarchy anyway.
    20AnonymousSep 16, 2026 14:59

The question is whether Watanabe Tsuneo (aka "Nabetsune," the Yomiuri Giants chairman) actually plays baseball, though.
    24AnonymousSep 16, 2026 15:01
That's really not a big deal though. Like a busy big-corporation president is gonna sit down and play games lol
    25AnonymousSep 16, 2026 15:01
Whether they actually play the games isn't really the point — it's more about how well upper management understands what's happening on the ground. Not just in games, either; it's a common story of higher-ups who don't know the front lines making unreasonable demands.
    27AnonymousSep 16, 2026 15:02
The CEO plays them though, at game companies.
    29AnonymousSep 16, 2026 15:03
The baseball example makes it clearest — basically, at companies whose core business is print media or other media, it's the people who don't play games at all who end up at the top, that's what this is about.
    30AnonymousSep 16, 2026 15:03
Does this guy know anything about companies besides Namco and SNK?
    31AnonymousSep 16, 2026 15:03
It's not "Japan," it's Bandai Namco. You can't know what other companies' setups are like from hearsay alone — maybe some other studio's dev team was just thinking '(whoa, Bandai Namco really is done for) yeah totally, same over here' while nodding along.
    32AnonymousSep 16, 2026 15:04

    That's disrespectful to Harada.

Background and key points of this discussion

Harada has led the Tekken series as producer for many years, and it was only recently revealed this year that he’s moving to the SNK Group. This remark comes from a VGC interview, and what sparked pushback in the thread was that his subject wasn’t limited to “Bandai Namco” but broadened to “major Japanese game companies” in general. The debate split roughly into two camps. One took the practical view that it’s only natural for management to focus on profit and loss rather than actual gameplay, since that’s simply a division of labor. The other took the critical view that judging things by numbers alone, without understanding what’s happening on the ground, is exactly why companies keep getting withdrawal-or-continue decisions wrong. Both sides backed their arguments with real examples of executives who did play and make hands-on decisions, like Koei Tecmo’s Kou Shibusawa and Nintendo’s “Boss” Yamauchi. One thing readers can easily misunderstand is that this remark was made purely in Harada’s personal interview — he never actually named any specific companies himself.

  • Falcom’s ‘Trails’ Series Tops 10 Million Sales — 5ch: ‘The Moment It Ditched PlayStation, Numbers Jumped, LOL’

Nihon Falcom has announced that cumulative sales of its “Trails” series have surpassed 10 million units. That’s up from the 9 million mark reported a year earlier, and the growth over that period is widely attributed to the series’ expansion onto Switch and Steam. On 5ch’s hardware/industry (console wars) board, some welcomed this apparent break from the series’ longtime PlayStation-only focus, while others took a cooler view, calling 10 million “nothing special.” The thread also branched into whether newcomers can realistically jump into the series, and if so, where they should start.

Every time there's a sale, it climbs the charts on both Switch and Steam, so I figure it's selling well — but I never hear anything like that about PS. Actually, a Steam sale started yesterday and it's charting again right now.

    Re: #42
The PS Store is strong for free-to-play titles and new releases, but older games barely move even on sale. No matter how cheap it gets, people who already bought it obviously won't buy again — meaning there just aren't new buyers.
    58AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:23

    It's 16 titles over 22 years:
Sky 1-3 (Trails in the Sky FC/SC/the 3rd)
Zero and Azure (Trails from Zero / to Azure)
    Nayuta
    Cold Steel 1-4
    Reverie
    Daybreak 1-2
    Beyond the Horizon
    Sky remakes 1-2

    Re: #67
I'm interested in Cold Steel, but the whole "you have to play the earlier series first" prerequisite is such a hassle that it makes me not want to touch the Trails series at all.
    72AnonymousSep 16, 2026 13:37
    Re: #70
You play Sky 1-3, then Trails from Zero, then clear Trails to Azure — only after that do you finally get to Cold Steel.
And tons of characters from the older games show up too: Rector in Cold Steel, for instance, actually first appeared in Sky the 3rd as a former student at Jenis Royal Academy.

Going from Daybreak to Daybreak III, that's down to about a quarter of the audience, isn't it?
No matter how much it turned into a 'barrier station' (paywall-style gate) from part 3 onward, that just shows a lot of users said 'no thanks' to paying for the barrier just to keep playing Trails.

Like with Hana no Keiji (a samurai manga/drama) too — you don't need to know the Sengoku era from the very start either.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “10 million units” figure comes from Nihon Falcom’s own announcement of cumulative shipments and downloads, while the 9 million figure was from the previous year’s commemorative dividend tied to “Trails in the Sky the 1st.” The one-million-unit increase over that year is attributed not just to the PlayStation platforms the series has long relied on, but to its expanded rollout on Switch (2) and Steam. Where the thread split was over how to judge this apparent “PlayStation exodus”: some posters shared anecdotes that the games chart well during Steam sales but show little movement on the PlayStation Store. That said, the quote attributed to Falcom’s president and the age-demographic graph that got posted both lacked any clear sourcing — they weren’t official material, just posters’ memory or screenshots, so they should be taken with a grain of salt. Another point of debate was whether newcomers could jump in starting from something like “Trails of Cold Steel,” given how the series carries forward lore from earlier entries; posters compared it to long-running manga or historical dramas in arguing over whether it’s possible to “read partway through.” This isn’t really a question with a right answer — it’s best understood as simply a matter of personal taste that varies a lot from person to person.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Console Wars)) thread “[Nihon Falcom] Trails series tops 10 million units. Up 1 million in one year“.
