  • Schreier: ‘Kojima Demanded a Huge Budget and Multiplatform Release from PlayStation, Xbox Offered a Low Budget’

Games journalist Jason Schreier reported that director Hideo Kojima demanded a massive budget and a multiplatform release from PlayStation for his new title ‘Physint.’ According to Schreier, Xbox had no intention of matching that kind of budget and instead offered a far smaller amount than PlayStation did. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, opinions split over the credibility of the report — some praised Schreier’s track record, while others questioned whether one journalist could really have inside information from both Microsoft and Sony (SIE) at the same time. Posts also pointed to the contractual relationship between Kojima Productions and Sony, and contrasted the reaction here with how fans responded when Kojima left Konami.

Reportedly, Kojima asked PlayStation for a massive budget for the development of 'Physint,' while also wanting the game to launch on multiple platforms.
According to Jason Schreier, the budget figures he'd heard rumored were extremely high. However, Xbox had no intention of giving Kojima that kind of money, and reportedly offered a far smaller budget instead.
    4AnonymousSep 25, 2026 07:22
And so, reluctantly, off to Xbox with a massively slashed budget lol

If they're starting from scratch looking for an engine now, that's another 5 years from here — Kojima will be like 70 by then.
The moment he retires, the studio's probably getting cut instantly.

He probably pitched a huge package deal that includes a movie adaptation.
And of course he'd direct the movie himself too, stuffed with Hollywood actors.

Becoming a film director has always been Kojima's consistent goal anyway.

They're busy slashing their own in-house staff — no way they'd hand a massive budget to an outsider.

    Re: #24
Regardless of whether this is true or not,
both Sony and Microsoft keep going through cycles of layoffs and restructuring…

'Nishi-kun' (nickname for current SIE president Hideaki Nishino) doesn't have deep ties to Kojima to begin with and isn't even from a gaming background, so there's no way he'd fund Kojima after he failed to deliver results.
And Microsoft, despite its high asset value, is currently cash-strapped from insanely expensive AI investments, so there's no way they'd hand Kojima a huge budget either.

That much you could predict just from following console-war boards.

Apparently porting work is brutal enough to work engineers at a small studio to death lol

Background and Key Points of This Story

Jason Schreier is a reporter for Bloomberg in the US with a track record of consistently breaking inside information about the games industry. Kojima Productions became independent from Konami in 2015 and, with funding from Sony, went on to release the ‘Death Stranding’ series; the new title ‘Physint’ was likewise announced in 2023 for PS5. This report is based on unconfirmed insider information that Schreier claims to have obtained, and the biggest point of contention in the thread is how accurately a single reporter could really grasp the details of negotiations on both the SIE and Microsoft sides. Posters also noted that the community’s reaction was strikingly different between Kojima’s Konami exit and this contract dispute with Sony — even though both are technically ‘contract trouble,’ which says something about the psychology of industry fans beyond just whether the rumor itself is true.

  • FF7 Rebirth for ¥2,000 on Steam — 5ch: ‘A 32.8% Clear Rate Is Brutal’

A thread went up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board about FF7 Rebirth, which had gone on sale for ¥2,000 on Steam. It opened with an image praising the summon monsters’ 4K high-quality visuals alongside a post claiming “low-spec hardware can’t handle this,” but commenters quickly pointed out the image wasn’t actually from the PS2 — it was from the PSP remaster of Crisis Core. The discussion eventually expanded into a full-blown performance debate over PC, PS5, and Switch 2, with FF7 Remake’s 32.8% clear rate (compared to Witcher 3’s 22%) getting cited as ammunition, fueling a back-and-forth over where the “recommended spec line” really sits.

The 4K max-settings summon monsters look so insanely powerful, it blew me away.

Yeah, no way low-spec-pleb hardware can handle this.

If you haven’t played it yet, you should grab it in this sale.

Honestly, you'd get more mileage turning this into a meme image

'Rebirth Comedy Duo' (manzai-style joke images)

    Background and Key Points

The PC version of FF7 Rebirth lists an RTX 2070 or better as its recommended spec, and the thread’s “line for good-looking graphics” debate was built around that benchmark. Meanwhile, the 32.8% clear rate cited in the thread comes from Steam’s achievement-tracking page — worth noting that not finishing a game often just means it’s sitting in someone’s backlog rather than reflecting difficulty, so it isn’t a direct measure of how good the hardware or software actually is. The image posted at the start of the thread was initially mistaken for the PS2 version, but replies corrected it to the PSP remaster of Crisis Core, illustrating the risk of judging a platform by looks alone. The back half of the thread veered off into a PC-vs-PS5-vs-Switch 2 performance comparison, turning into the kind of hardware slap-fight where everyone trades insulting nicknames for the other camp.

  • Wild Arms Successor ‘Armed Fantasia’ Cancelled — 5ch: ‘3D Is Hard’

Overseas outlet noisypixel.net reports that Armed Fantasia, which had been raising development funds on Kickstarter as a spiritual successor to Wild Arms, has been cancelled. 505 Games had come aboard as publisher, with the game planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC, but the project was quietly shelved after updates dried up. On the thread, comments piled up arguing that “trying to make a full-fledged 3D RPG without corporate backing was doomed from the start,” while discussion spread to comparisons with other crowdfunded titles like Eiyuden Chronicle, Ratatan, and Bakeru, as well as industry-wide issues like ballooning development costs and the risks of platform-exclusivity deals.

Honestly the cost-to-value ratio isn't great, but that's what meeting real demand looks like.
It's not like we're all dying to see something expensive-looking anyway.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Known informally as “Armed Wyrms” — that is, Armed Fantasia — the game was developed by Media.Vision as a spiritual successor to the Wild Arms series. It raised funds on Kickstarter, and 505 Games (Digital Bros) later joined as publisher, with the title announced for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC. In recent years, some crowdfunded projects — like Eiyuden Chronicle Rising and Shenmue III — have gone on to secure major-publisher backing and reach completion, but it’s rare for a project to be cancelled after a publisher has already signed on, as happened here. Opinions on the thread split into two camps over the cause of the failure: one blames the creators’ overly optimistic planning — a development scope too large for the funds actually raised from backers — while the other points to the industry’s underlying structure, where 3D RPG development racks up costs so high that even major studios struggle with it. It’s worth noting that how the funds raised from backers will actually be handled remains pure speculation on the thread, with no official explanation given.

  • Kanata Kato Beats SILENT HILL f on PS5, Then Switches to Streaming Rhythm Heaven — 5ch: “That Was Clearly Staged”

Model and actress Kanata Kato made headlines for buying a PS5 specifically to play “SILENT HILL f,” but now 5ch’s Hardware & Industry board (“Geha”) is buzzing about the fact that she’s started streaming Nintendo Switch’s “Rhythm Heaven” series instead. According to the thread, after clearing SILENT HILL f once, she couldn’t find another PS5 title she wanted to play, so she ended up going through a second playthrough. That’s sparked a split in opinion: some say “the PS5 purchase must have been a staged ad,” while others argue “SILENT HILL f is a brutally hard game built around replaying it, so of course she moved on.”

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Kanata Kato is a model and actress who bought a PS5 specifically to play “SILENT HILL f.” According to the thread, after clearing the game once, she couldn’t find another PS5 title she wanted to play, so she ended up going through it a second time. She then started streaming Nintendo’s rhythm-game series “Rhythm Heaven,” and the switch to a Switch title became the talk of the thread. Opinions split over whether the PS5 purchase itself was a staged promotional stunt, or whether the difficult, replay-heavy game simply wasn’t suited to a casual player. Some posts use the term “goki” — derogatory 5ch slang for PlayStation fans — but that’s standard board-culture trash talk rather than commentary on her looks or character. SILENT HILL f is known even among recent horror titles for its heavy emphasis on multiple playthroughs, so the argument that it’s simply too demanding for a light gamer carries some weight.

  • 70% Off at ¥2,693 Just a Month and a Half After Launch — 5ch: “Wait a Month and a Half and You Get to Play It for 70% Off”

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, a new game released only about a month and a half ago is making waves after its price dropped to ¥2,693 — a 70% discount. It’s rare for the actual street price (not counting point-back rebates) to fall this fast, and the thread was split on why: is this just a retailer clearing out dead stock, or a sign of a flop whose demand was badly misjudged? Another title seeing steep cuts around the same time, “Wolverine,” was brought up too, with posters comparing how quickly each game’s price is collapsing.

    Background and Talking Points

On the Geha (Hardware/Industry) board, “wall” (壁) is originally slang for a title that ranks near the top of the sales charts, and this thread’s title uses the word ironically in that spirit. The debate centers on why the price dropped: is it simply a retailer clearing inventory early, or a sign of a flop whose demand was misjudged? Price cuts like this are usually driven by the retailer rather than the publisher, so a sharp drop doesn’t necessarily mean a direct loss for the maker. That said, the thread also mixes in unconfirmed rumors about the developer’s internal situation, so it’s worth being careful not to conflate the fact of a discount with the game’s actual quality or the publisher’s inner workings.

  • New Fire Emblem Scores 2.9 on Japan’s Amazon — US and UK Rate It Above 4

The Japanese Amazon reviews for the latest entry in the “Fire Emblem” series have stalled at just 2.9 stars, while the US listing sits at 4.5, the UK listing at 4.1, and Metacritic’s user score stands at 8.9 (89 points) — a stark mismatch across countries and rating platforms that’s become a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry (“geha”) board. Thread posters split between two theories: that longtime fans are handing out harsh scores out of frustration with the series’ new direction, or that the low ratings reflect a deliberate review-bombing campaign. Commenters also pointed to the “Xenoblade” series, which reportedly saw a similar pile-up of negative reviews in the past.

    Background and Points of Debate

Amazon lets anyone post a review whether or not their purchase is verified, so right after launch a handful of low or high scores can swing the average sharply. Rating tendencies and how invested reviewers are also differ by country and platform (US/UK Amazon, Metacritic’s user score), so a regional gap in scores alone isn’t proof of “manipulation.” In the thread, the view that longtime fans were reacting harshly to the series’ change in direction clashed with suspicions of an organized review-bombing campaign, but no evidence was actually presented confirming fraudulent posting took place — both remain speculation among the participants. It’s also worth noting that Metacriticjs user score is likewise just a tally of anonymous submissions, though the thread itself never brought that up.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “geha”) thread “[Not Really News] FE ‘Mankou,’ Amazon Rating 2.9” (“Mankou” is a mocking nickname posters use for the game/fandom).

  • Wolverine’s Glowing Reviews Contain a Mysterious Phrase: ‘I Am Not a Robot’

Multiple PS Store reviews for the PS5 game ‘Wolverine’ were found giving high star ratings while the review text itself literally contained the phrase ‘I am not a robot,’ sparking discussion on 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board. While many commenters speculated it was a leftover template artifact from having AI write first-person reviews, others pointed out that the review count has topped 48,000 and that they’ve barely heard any genuinely good buzz about the game — leaving the thread split over whether this is organized manipulation or just a coincidence.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This kind of boilerplate text leaking into reviews can happen when someone instructs an AI to “write a first-person user review,” and the AI mistakenly outputs verification phrases from its original prompt — like “I am not a robot” — verbatim. The example posted in the thread (post #49) looks like a textbook case of one of these “order sheets” being copy-pasted straight in. That said, this isn’t proof that the poster or publisher did it intentionally, and opinions in the thread are split — some pushed back, saying “I don’t think this is astroturfing” (post #63). Whether the PS Store’s review count (over 48,000) is high or low for a major title also became a talking point, but the only comparison offered was Death Stranding 2, with nothing to back it up like an industry average. What readers should be careful not to assume is that this leaked text is automatically proof of “organized rating manipulation” — most of the thread’s comments remain speculation and jokes rather than established fact.

  • Super Mario Kart’s Confirm Button Was Shockingly B, Not A — 5ch: “A Gets Mashed So Much It Breaks”

Some Super Famicom-era games actually assigned the confirm button to B instead of A. Super Mario Kart and Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2) are prime examples — their manuals explicitly state “B button to confirm, X button to cancel.” Back then there was no standardized rule for which button confirmed, and it’s said that A gradually became the standard “confirm” button starting around Dragon Quest V. A thread on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Geha)” board took this fact as a jumping-off point and spun into discussion of the PlayStation’s ○/× confirm controversy and how Nintendo settled on the A/B layout to stay consistent with the Game Boy — sparking a lively debate about the history of button layouts.

There's no way Nintendo didn't have a plan for what each button does.
    A is confirm.
The SFC prototype had the easy-to-press Y/B position as B/A.
But the Game Boy's B/A layout was designed at a slight upward-right angle.
They decided to match that Game Boy upward-right layout,
and that's what turned into the Y/B, B/A mess that's dogged Nintendo hardware for decades.

    Re: #92
Within the Genesis lineup the policy stayed consistent the whole time: B = cancel, A = confirm, with C optionally working as confirm too. Why would Sega need to match Nintendo anyway?

Background and key points of this discussion

The convention that “A is the confirm button” in Japanese games didn’t take hold right from the Super Famicom’s launch — it formed gradually across multiple titles. In the thread, some argued Nintendo prioritized matching the Game Boy’s layout when deciding the A/B positions, while others held that A-as-confirm became more or less standard from Dragon Quest V onward. Meanwhile, the PlayStation’s ○/× confirm controversy stems from a separate cause: it was originally designed with ○ = confirm and × = cancel, but the Japanese spec was flipped to match the overseas standard of × for confirm — and that background became the focus of the debate. The two stories are often conflated, but their origins differ: the SFC-era “B confirms” quirk was a product of the transitional period before Nintendo established a unified rule, while the PS’s ○/× issue was a case of an already-settled rule being overturned afterward.

At the Asian Games underway in Aichi/Nagoya, 11-year-old Yuki Kurihara (Tokyo Verdy), competing in the esports event “Puyo Puyo Esports,” won all three of his group-stage matches on September 24 against players from the Philippines, Kazakhstan, and South Korea, securing first place in Group A and a spot in the finals. The final takes place on the 26th, with a South Korean player considered the likely opponent. On 5channel, users expressed shock at skill far beyond what you’d expect from an elementary schooler, while also debating whether esports should really be called a “sport,” and discussing the South Korean player said to have quit his job to focus on competing.

At the Asian Games in Aichi/Nagoya, Yuki Kurihara (Tokyo Verdy), the youngest member of Team Japan at age 11, competed in the group stage of the esports puzzle game “Puyo Puyo” on the 24th, winning all three matches to top Group A and advance to the final. Attention now turns to whether an “elementary-school gold medalist” will be crowned at the final on the 26th.

In Group A, contested among five players, Kurihara opened with a 3-0 win over a Filipino player, then cruised past a Kazakh player in his second match. In his third match, he beat a South Korean player 3-1 to lock in his finals berth. The final will be held on the 26th.

    Background and Talking Points

Esports have become an official category at the Asian Games, with a wide range of titles adopted, from fighting games to racing games to mobile titles. On 5channel, the recurring debate over “whether esports counts as a sport” flared up again in this thread, as it always does. It’s also not unusual for teenagers to reach the top of the world in falling-block puzzle games and shooters, where reflexes matter most — the rise of young players like Kurihara is seen as a trend shared with other competitive games. The thread also contained posts making ethnically derogatory remarks about the South Korean player expected to be his final opponent; those have been excluded from this article.

Rather than throwing day-one Game Pass money at Japanese third-parties, they'd be better off just buying one outright
    Yen's weak anyway

Sounds like there'd be nothing left then lol

😂Yeah, right — you mean Sony?

They cut Kojima Productions loose, but even after dropping that 'Granny of War,' you still won't cut them? For real?

There goes 'M-ending' losing it again lmaooooo (note: "M-ending" refers to a poster ID ending in M, a common way to mock someone as an obsessive single poster)

Are you the guy cycling IDs and just talking to himself?

    "It's Sony's fault—"
    "It's PS's fault—"

yet somehow this is still an Xbox-bad-news thread

Sounds like PS has just been demoted to a toy that only exists to get trolled lol

Hardware's a bust, so from now on it's a software company
    Fitting, since it's literally 'Micro-SOFT'

What hardware can even beat Windows 11? Show me, show me

As you can see in this very thread, even after looking at Re: #1, PS fanboys still can't accept reality

If Microsoft pulled completely out of gaming, the industry would be finished
If Sony pulled out, it wouldn't
    65AnonymousSep 24, 2026 15:09
    Re: #63
    Nah, it wouldn't end
    76AnonymousSep 24, 2026 15:24
In terms of first-party software strength, it's Nintendo > MS > Sony, right?
    82AnonymousSep 24, 2026 15:26
    Re: #76
    No way
By revenue, MS's gaming division beats Nintendo's entire lineup
Even throwing in Pokémon doesn't help — and you shouldn't count it anyway
Games-only is fine (merch and the like belongs to Game Freak etc.)

    Re: #76
Microsoft's been pulling in 5 trillion yen in net profit every 3 months, you know? Aren't you dreaming a bit too big?

    Sony > Microsoft > Nintendo

    Yep, I win

So the blue area's gone completely by 2028? That's intense!

Background and Key Points of Debate

Xbox’s poor domestic sales performance has been a recurring topic of discussion for several years now, and this thread is simply the latest chapter. The backdrop is Microsoft’s move in the 2020s to bring major studios like Bethesda and Activision Blizzard under its umbrella, while also consolidating or shutting down some of its development studios — the “the studios have shrunk” comments in the thread are pointing to this trend. The point of contention was whether it’s fair to equate weak hardware sales with the health of the business as a whole. Since Microsoft’s revenue spans businesses well beyond consoles, including cloud and OS, some argue it’s premature to judge the company’s overall standing purely on hardware unit sales. There’s also been a growing trend in recent years of Xbox titles releasing on PS5 as well, and the thread’s central divide came down to whether to treat “Xbox the hardware” and “Microsoft the software company” as separate things.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware & Industry [Geha]) thread “[Bad News for PlayStation Fanboys] Nobody even knows what Xbox is! They pulled out already!! → Well, here’s the reality lol“.
