  • Xbox’s Domestic Weekly Sales Slump Into Double Digits, Sparking Debate Over the Business’s Health

On 5ch’s “Hardware & Industry” (Geha) board, a thread caught fire after sales figures were posted showing Xbox’s domestic weekly hardware sales stuck in the single or low double digits. The discussion also brought in comparisons with Nintendo Switch 2 and PS5 sales figures, the history of Microsoft consolidating and shutting down game studios, and the view that Microsoft is shifting its focus from hardware to software. While some posters flatly declared Xbox is “pulling out” of the market, others pushed back, pointing to Microsoft’s consistently strong quarterly net profit as proof that “the business itself isn’t shaky,” leaving opinions split on Xbox’s current state.

Right in the dead center of the gaming industry lmaooooo

So the blue area's gone completely by 2028? That's intense!

Background and Key Points of Debate

Xbox’s poor domestic sales performance has been a recurring topic of discussion for several years now, and this thread is simply the latest chapter. The backdrop is Microsoft’s move in the 2020s to bring major studios like Bethesda and Activision Blizzard under its umbrella, while also consolidating or shutting down some of its development studios — the “the studios have shrunk” comments in the thread are pointing to this trend. The point of contention was whether it’s fair to equate weak hardware sales with the health of the business as a whole. Since Microsoft’s revenue spans businesses well beyond consoles, including cloud and OS, some argue it’s premature to judge the company’s overall standing purely on hardware unit sales. There’s also been a growing trend in recent years of Xbox titles releasing on PS5 as well, and the thread’s central divide came down to whether to treat “Xbox the hardware” and “Microsoft the software company” as separate things.

  • Sendai Pokémon GO Event Clashes with Tohoku University Entrance Exam Dates, Forcing Applicants to Lodge Outside the Prefecture

The dates for “Pokémon GO Wild Area,” a major event being held in Sendai from November 6–8, overlap with Tohoku University’s comprehensive-selection (AO) entrance exam, leaving applicants scrambling to find lodging. Hotels in the city were quickly booked up by event attendees, with reports of rates spiking to 60,000–70,000 yen per night. The university has secured roughly 1,500 rooms, but most are outside Miyagi Prefecture, raising concerns about the burden on students facing exams. On 5channel, opinions split between those blaming applicants who booked late for their own predicament and those arguing the university should announce exam dates earlier — with the discussion also branching into university trivia, such as Tohoku University filling about 30% of its total enrollment quota (671 students) through AO admissions, and its globally respected materials engineering program.

Lodging in the city was quickly snapped up by event attendees, making it difficult for applicants to secure rooms. Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Tohoku University currently recruits 671 students — about 30% of its total enrollment quota — through comprehensive-selection (AO) admissions, making it known as one of the national universities with a relatively high AO ratio. Meanwhile, “Pokémon GO Wild Area” is a major real-world event that drew 420,000 people over three days when held in Nagasaki in 2025, and this time Sendai is the only city in Japan hosting it. The thread’s opinions split mainly between voices holding applicants who booked late responsible for their own situation, and voices criticizing the underlying structure in which the event’s announcement and room-booking outpaced the exam schedule — with the latter camp also floating the idea that the university should announce exam dates earlier. There were also some barbed comments about “people past retirement age still playing games” and digs tied to academic pedigree at “bottom-tier universities,” which became a separate point of friction from the core lodging issue worth noting. Also worth noting: the claim in the thread that “AO application guidelines were published on August 28” comes from a forum post, and the sequence relative to when the event schedule was announced has not been confirmed against primary sources.

  • Nintendo’s Miyamoto Says ‘Don’t Drag Me Into Hardware Spec Wars’ — 5ch Divided: ‘Isn’t That a Bit Convenient?’

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto remarked that he’d rather not be “dragged into hardware wars over specs and performance,” sparking discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. Thread posters noted that Nintendo once touted its technical prowess by claiming the GameCube could display “128 Marios at once,” and questioned whether it was a bit too convenient for the company to now distance itself from the specs race. Others pushed back, arguing it was Sony that had been “flexing” over performance, leaving the thread divided. The discussion eventually expanded to comparisons between the Switch 2’s 60,000 yen price tag and PS5 sales trends following its price hike.

    1AnonymousSep 24, 2026 11:57
If they'd said this from the start, fine, but Nintendo's the company that used to brag about specs — remember "we can render 128 Marios at once"?
For a company that used to flex on performance to suddenly bow out of the specs race and go "please don't compare us" seems awfully convenient, no?
    2AnonymousSep 24, 2026 12:02
The "128 Marios" thing was just Nintendo promoting its own product — showing how much more powerful the GameCube was compared to the N64.
There's no evidence they used that to flex on other companies.

People who post baseless nonsense like that on boards like 5ch are,
    statistically speaking, mostly socially maladjusted.
In Japan that crowd gets called "kodomobeya ojisan" (basement-dwelling manchildren).

Sony seriously needs to take responsibility for the mess they started.
    38AnonymousSep 24, 2026 12:42

Since the price hike, weekly sales have basically settled at 20,000 units, occasionally spiking to 30,000 around Obon and the like.
And that's with plenty of stock sitting around.
    This hardware is a joke.

    47AnonymousSep 24, 2026 12:49
But it's pretty much guaranteed that Microsoft and Sony will have to sell their next-gen consoles at a serious loss just to keep them in an affordable price range, so within the console space at least, they'll have no real competition left.

    79AnonymousSep 24, 2026 13:05
    Re: #47
Nintendo consoles are conceived as toys for the general public.
At 60,000 yen, the Switch 2 has blown way past that category, which is a real problem.
Sony and Microsoft's consoles, on the other hand, are more like a hobbyist item aimed at people who are into gaming as a pastime.
Being expensive is still an issue for them, sure, but they're not under nearly the same pressure to stay cheap that Nintendo is.
So since these are fundamentally different kinds of products, comparing them on price alone doesn't really mean much.
    53AnonymousSep 24, 2026 12:53
Well, as for whether consoles should have avoided a specs race at all — it was inevitable that PCs would eventually become their rivals.
The fact that they managed decent cost-performance while still being able to run the same games as a PC is thanks to all that relentless R&D.
But where everyone except Nintendo went wrong was pouring all their money into specs while neglecting software development and building up their IP brands.
If you're purely chasing specs, where anyone can just pay more to get something better, you'll eventually lose all your added value.

Yeah, but that 50,000-yen console is losing to the 60,000-yen one…

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “128 Marios at once” claim cited in the thread traces back to a technical demo unveiled at Space World 2000 to showcase the GameCube’s processing power — it was more a demonstration of raw computing capability than marketing rhetoric meant to fuel a specs war. With that in mind, both the argument that “Nintendo used to compete on specs too, so this is rich coming from them now” and the counter-argument that “it was Sony who started the specs war” tend to oversimplify the context of the time. It’s also worth noting that the weekly sales figures and post-price-hike PS5 sales trends cited in the thread are based on 5ch users’ informal observations, not necessarily official aggregated data. Since Nintendo hardware and console/PC-adjacent hardware are built around different assumed user bases and pricing strategies, there are structural differences that a simple side-by-side comparison of specs or price can’t fully capture.

  • Capcom Announces VR Version of ‘Ace Attorney 5’ — Fans Left Baffled: ‘Why 5?’

On September 24, 2026, Capcom announced a VR version of Ace Attorney 5. It’s slated for release in 2027, supporting Meta VR Glasses and the Meta Quest series (Quest 2/3/3s/Pro); support for PSVR2 has not been confirmed. Since Meta also unveiled its new VR glasses that same day, some commenters speculated about a connection between the two companies, while others voiced confusion over why ‘5’ — an entry with famously mixed reviews within the series — was chosen instead of 1-3 or Great Ace Attorney. The thread also touched on what series writer Shu Takumi is up to these days, and debated the reputations of 5 and 6.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Ace Attorney series, launched by Capcom in 2001, is a beloved adventure franchise. Entries 1 through 4 used hand-drawn, picture-book-style visuals, while 5 onward switched to a fully redesigned 3D model style. As several commenters in the thread pointed out, the likely reason ‘5’ was chosen for VR is technical: turning 1-4 into VR would require building all-new 3D models from the original artwork — essentially a full remake — whereas 5 and 6 already use 3D models that are much easier to repurpose. That said, fans are divided over 5 and 6, since series creator Shu Takumi wasn’t directly involved in either, which is fueling complaints of ‘why not the more popular 1-3 or Great Ace Attorney instead?’ Meta also unveiled its own new VR glasses on the same day as this announcement, prompting speculation about a connection between the two companies — though that remains pure speculation. Whether the VR version will support PSVR2 was not confirmed in the announcement, leaving that as the biggest open question for PlayStation-side users.

  • SIE’s New PS5 Ad Hits 470K Views but Only 23 Likes — 5ch Smells ‘Manipulation’

SIE’s new PS5 commercial, “The Time Is Now,” became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. Within tens of minutes of being posted, the video’s view count topped 470,000 — yet it had only 23 likes. Users compared this to another game video posted 11 hours earlier (8,029 views, 87 likes) and called the ratio unnatural, raising suspicions of vote manipulation or paid ad placement. Some also pointed out that the ad’s tagline, “Now is the time to buy,” offers no concrete justification, fueling speculation about inventory clearance or the timing of a PS6 launch.

    Re: #104
If you buy a worldwide ad placement, it genuinely is that fast
No joke — the ad starts playing simultaneously across every device everywhere

Background and Key Points of Debate

Five years after the PS5’s launch, SIE has kept running ads urging consumers that “now is the time to buy.” What sparked debate in this thread wasn’t the ad’s messaging itself, but how quickly its YouTube view count climbed. Reaching several hundred thousand views immediately after posting can happen simply by purchasing YouTube ad placement, so it doesn’t automatically prove fraudulent inflation. Still, posters repeatedly pointed out that the ratio of views to likes was wildly out of line compared to other videos on the same channel, which is what fueled the suspicion. Some also noted that view counts can lag behind the real figure on the viewer’s end, so no firm conclusion was reached. One post claiming annual sales of the Japanese PS5 Digital Edition were “around 400,000 units” also appeared in the thread, but this is an unsourced guess and cannot be confirmed as fact.

  • Why Is the Gaming Hardware Board Full of Switch 2 Criticism? 5ch: “It Goes Both Ways”

On 5ch’s hardware/industry board (commonly known as “Gaha”), a thread asking “why does this board have so many posts criticizing the Switch 2?” went up and drew a large number of replies. Opinions ranged from “there are overwhelmingly more posts bashing the PS5, so it goes both ways,” to references to the incident where Sony’s Wolverine saw its Metascore drop after a wave of positive reviews got mass-deleted, to Nintendo’s lawsuit against Palworld’s developer being brought up as part of the backdrop to the rivalry. There was also pushback suggesting that simply pointing out “the Switch 2 has low specs” is itself being treated as anti behavior.

It's not criticism, it's just stating a fact — that the Switch 2 has low specs.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Gaha” (short for “hardware/industry board”) is the long-running nickname for 5ch’s console-war threads, a board known since 5ch’s early days for fierce clashes between fans of rival platforms. The Wolverine review controversy mentioned in the thread refers to an incident where a flood of glowing reviews appeared right after launch, prompting the platform to delete them as suspicious scores, which dragged the Metascore down. The lawsuit between Nintendo and Palworld’s developer is an ongoing dispute over patent infringement, and it resurfaced in this thread as well. Looking at how the replies play out, the line between “criticism” and being an “anti” clearly shifts depending on who’s posting, suggesting the flame-baiting itself has become a self-perpetuating part of the board’s culture. Rather than one side being purely the aggressor, what stands out is a continuing pattern of both sides digging up dirt on each other.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Gaha)) thread “Why Is It Only the Gaming Hardware Board That’s Full of Switch 2 Haters?.”

  • New Fire Emblem Title ‘Bansenkou’ Splits Opinion — Scenario Praised, but Save System Sparks Backlash

Opinions split on 5ch’s hardware/industry board over how reception to the new Fire Emblem title “Bansenkou” shifted after the Silver Week holidays. The thread’s OP claimed that as more players tried the game, positive reviews increased, but replies included an image showing the opposite — a rising share of negative reviews — sparking arguments over which was true and whether review manipulation was at play. Meanwhile, many posters praised the main story and character depth, while also raising concrete complaints about the game’s systems, such as having only a single save slot and the punishing scheduling demands of side-quest (“Gaiden”) deadlines.

・A lot of old-school FE fans are absolutely losing it, raging that this is a garbage game.
・Still, pretty much everyone agrees the story is great.
・Theodora, the dark-skinned character — turns out she's adorable and the most popular one, of all things.

    Re: #6
It really comes down to how you look at it.
If you go in blind and just build up whichever skills seem obviously useful, you actually end up with some pretty interesting battles.
Also, Gaiden chapters pay out a ton of gold so they feel mandatory, but the deadlines and same-day recruiting make scheduling tough.
Either way, you can redo a battle from any point, and even reset all the way back to the start of the chapter, so you might as well just take it slow and retry as many times as you need.
(And of course there's a story-skip option too.)

    62AnonymousSep 24, 2026 10:52
    Re: #48
    No, it is NOT fine.
In the Dietrich arc, I advanced time to do a Gaiden quest, then tried to head to the main quest afterward — didn't make it in time and had to redo 160 turns.
The timing design around Gaiden quests is way too sloppy, and even if the saves were separate, it autosaves right before you go do the Gaiden, so you can't even go back.

Calling this design insane would be an understatement.
    67AnonymousSep 24, 2026 10:54
    Re: #62
I hit the exact same thing.
And in that particular chapter, you can't warp anywhere until you go to the main quest location and sit through the dialogue, so depending on where you are when the autosave hits, you can get permanently soft-locked. That's brutal.

    Re: #98
    No, no, no.
The exploration sections are even more of a slog now, and that's tanked how comfortable replaying the game is.
And on top of that, the support conversations — the thing Three Houses got praised for the most — have gotten noticeably worse too.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Bansenkou” is the newest installment in Nintendo’s Fire Emblem tactical RPG series, and the thread repeatedly compared it to the previous entry, Three Houses. The debate centers on two main points. The first concerns how the game is actually being received: the thread’s OP claimed reception had turned positive, but an image was immediately posted showing a rising share of negative reviews, splitting opinion on which was accurate. This kind of user score is often suspected of being skewed by coordinated positive or negative posting (“review bombing”), and speculation about “paid negative campaigns” or “manipulation” circulated on 5ch as well — though it’s worth noting this is all posters’ personal speculation, not official aggregated data or third-party analysis. The second point of contention is the game’s systems: the single save-file design and the tight scheduling demands of Gaiden (side) quests drew criticism, backed by concrete examples like having to redo 160 turns after a scheduling mistake. At the same time, the story and cast were widely praised, making this a discussion that doesn’t fit neatly into a simple “masterpiece” vs. “trash game” framing.

  • No Save Transfer for “Dragon Quest XI S” on Switch 2 — 5ch: “The Gap With The Witcher 3 Is Way Too Big”

It’s been revealed that the Switch 2 version of “Dragon Quest XI S” will launch for 5,478 yen (tax included), and while players will now be able to choose between a “Resolution Priority Mode” (1440p/30fps) and a “Performance Priority Mode” (1080p/60fps), the game will not support carrying over save data from the Switch version. On the hardware/industry (geha) board, opinions split between those saying existing owners don’t need to bother rebuying it since there’s no new content, and critics calling it inconsiderate compared to other companies’ cross-save support — with the discussion also turning to why no PS5 version is being made.

To sum up the conclusions first:

    – The price is 5,478 yen (tax included).

Players will now be able to choose between a “Resolution Priority Mode” (1440p/30fps) and a “Performance Priority Mode” (1080p/60fps).

The FFT remake got flak, but they clearly did careful work.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Square Enix’s approach to the Switch 2 transition has been inconsistent. The team behind “FFT: Revenge of Warlock” and the “Trials of Mana Remake” has carefully handled Switch 1 data carryover and 60fps support, and “Dragon Quest III” and “Dragon Quest X” have already received Switch 2 updates. “Dragon Quest XI S,” on the other hand, is being resold as an entirely new package, with no save data carryover implemented. A common misconception among readers is the explanation that “a PS5 version isn’t coming because the graphics are too lightweight” — but pushback within the thread points to sales projections as the real reason, suggesting the decision comes down to business judgment rather than technical difficulty. Opinions in the thread split between a resigned view that existing owners don’t need to force themselves to rebuy the game since there’s no new content, and criticism calling the move inconsiderate compared to how other companies have handled it.

Regular Resident Evil is basically already a Musou game lol

    Background and Key Points

“Musou” is the action series Koei Tecmo has run since 1997’s Dynasty Warriors, built around the thrill of mowing down huge numbers of enemies. The series has produced numerous collaborations with in-house and outside IPs alike, including Sengoku-era history, Zelda, Dragon Quest, and One Piece. Note that the thread title quoted above is not an actual statement from Koei Tecmo — it’s a made-up line poking fun at the sense that the series is running low on ideas, so it shouldn’t be mistaken for a real quote. While the thread buzzed with hopes for what franchise or setting should get the Musou treatment next, the recurring complaint that “only the look changes, the substance is the same every time” ran just as strong, making the series’ formula fatigue the central point of debate. Some posters called for a Star Wars Musou, but others pushed back with concerns about ballooning licensing costs — a reminder that pairing with a popular franchise isn’t a guaranteed hit on its own.

  • Leak: Sony Reportedly Surveying Developers Over Possible End to Physical Discs

Overseas leaker “Moore’s Law Is Dead” claims Sony has sent developers a large-scale survey about its plan to discontinue physical discs, apparently to gauge whether the policy should be reconsidered. On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, the timing sparked skepticism — with posters asking “what’s the point of asking now?” and “isn’t this just covering their tracks?” — since the discontinuation had seemed all but settled. Others questioned the credibility of the source, given MLID is known mainly for PC hardware leaks, while some called for alternatives like Nintendo’s key-card system instead, fueling further debate.

🔵 Sony Surveys Developers on Its Decision to Discontinue Physical Discs 💿
According to a rumor from "Moore's Law Is Dead," the company has sent out a large-scale survey asking developers for their views on the decision to discontinue physical discs — apparently to determine whether the policy should be reconsidered.
The survey reportedly includes questions along the lines of, "Do you have any concerns about not selling games on physical media?"
    6AnonymousSep 24, 2026 07:09
If they were actually discontinuing it, they wouldn't bother with a survey!
    8AnonymousSep 24, 2026 07:10
If they end up keeping it, maybe they'll switch to cheap DVDs instead? As long as there's a disc in the box, Western gamers don't seem to mind even if a mandatory extra download is required.

    Re: #8
So basically the key-card system — that's just a boot disc, isn't it?
    9AnonymousSep 24, 2026 07:11
I'd love for it to be true, but the source is Moore's Law Is Dead? Can that guy even get info like this? Isn't he an AMD specialist?
    26AnonymousSep 24, 2026 07:17
It's not like they're discontinuing it on a whim, so what's the point of a survey now? Are they stupid?
    34AnonymousSep 24, 2026 07:21
    Re: #26
It's probably just paperwork to draw up a list of which third parties would 'betray' them.
    30AnonymousSep 24, 2026 07:18
Too late for that now — Sony HQ has already said they won't make disc drives anymore. Plus the PS6 is probably already being designed disc-less and heading into mass-production prep, so there's no walking it back.
    31AnonymousSep 24, 2026 07:18
    Re: #30
Wait, does Sony even make disc drives?
    33AnonymousSep 24, 2026 07:21

Microsoft and Nintendo don't manufacture Blu-ray discs or SD cards either, you know.

    38AnonymousSep 24, 2026 07:25
Swallow your pride and just go with the same key-card system as Nintendo. As long as I can still buy and sell games used, I don't care whether the actual data is on the card or not.
    39AnonymousSep 24, 2026 07:25
    Re: #38
But there's no card slot [on the PS5]. If they're going to do this, it'd just be a regular key disc.

    Re: #39
Even with Sony discontinuing BD, could they still make discs if the CD/DVD line is separate? Though apparently PS5 can't read CDs, so it'd probably end up being DVD.
    64AnonymousSep 24, 2026 07:37
    Re: #39
Just roll it out with the PS6. A USB stick would work too.
    49AnonymousSep 24, 2026 07:31
Could they stop making recordable Blu-ray discs but keep Blu-ray going for something else?
    52AnonymousSep 24, 2026 07:33
    Re: #49
No need to keep it going. Xbox still has discs overseas too, but they're not manufacturing Blu-ray discs themselves.
    50AnonymousSep 24, 2026 07:31
This is already rigged. The outcome — discontinuation — is decided, and they're just running the survey to shut the loud complainers up: 'See? Most people are in favor of discontinuing it.'
    58AnonymousSep 24, 2026 07:34
    Re: #50
They're never going to release the results publicly anyway.
    56AnonymousSep 24, 2026 07:34
Developers are probably in favor of discontinuing it — apparently without a disc version, they get extra breathing room on the deadline right up until release day.

    99AnonymousSep 24, 2026 07:52
If they're doing this anyway, just adopt a new format already. A single-layer BD at 25GB is garbage by today's standards.
    100AnonymousSep 24, 2026 07:53
    Re: #99
    Wait, isn't it 50GB?

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The purported source of the survey, “Moore’s Law Is Dead,” is best known for leaks about PC CPUs and GPUs and has a thin track record on console internals — a point that drew notable skepticism in the thread about the source’s reliability. As an alternative to physical discs, posters raised Nintendo’s Switch-style “Game Card” system (where the card itself doesn’t hold all the data, requiring an additional download after startup), but since the PS5 hardware has no card slot, it was pointed out that any implementation would likely take the form of a “key disc” — a conventional disc containing only a boot key. Whether the production line for game optical discs is shared with recordable Blu-ray also came up as a point of debate, but the industry has offered no official explanation and it remains unconfirmed. It’s worth noting Sony has made no official announcement whatsoever — this remains strictly unverified leaker information.
