  • Metroidvania All-Star Lineup Sparks Endless Pushback on 5ch: ‘Hollow Knight Isn’t Soulslike’

A thread titled “I put together a lineup of Metroidvania masterpieces, any objections?” took off on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. Posters weighed in on staple titles like Ori, Hollow Knight, Nine Sols, and Metroid Dread, but pushback quickly followed, with comments like “Nine Sols is weak as a Metroidvania” and “Hollow Knight isn’t Soulslike.” The discussion spiraled further into a debate over the very origin of the term “Metroidvania” — whether it’s “a word foreigners coined to look down on Japanese games” or just an innocent portmanteau. Posters also traded views on Silksong’s difficulty and asked about which titles are available on consoles.

    All objections fully accepted.
    Rule:
The original Metroid series and the Castlevania series are excluded.
    6AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:42
Bloodstained (Ritual of the Night) was boring.
The sequel still looks stale and kind of rough too.

    Nine Sols is way harder.

Gameplay-wise it's clearly improved over the last game with QoL upgrades.
But atmosphere-wise, I liked the first one better.

Nine Sols was genuinely well made.

    31AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:26
Konami's reviving the original Castlevania, but they're just outsourcing the whole thing to an indie studio — at this point Bloodstained feels more like the "real" Castlevania.

I'd want to squeeze Salt and Sanctuary in there somewhere too — it was the true pioneer of "Soulsvania" before Hollow Knight.
Also, for the Ender series, shouldn't you pick Lilies over Magnolia?
    40AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:47

    Before Hollow Knight???
Hollow Knight isn't Soulslike to begin with.
    33AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:27
It's a term foreigners coined to look down on Japanese games,
but the media mistook it for "Look, foreigners are praising us!" and spread it around.

And now OP goes and uses that very term to start this thread without even knowing that. What a sorry state of affairs.

"Too hard" complaints are usually just a right-after-launch thing that dies down.
It's just bad players rushing for bragging rights who make noise about it.

I think everything except #6 is out on consoles.
#6, Environmental Station Alpha, is an earlier work by Hempuli, the creator of Baba Is You and Noita — probably PC-only.
    58AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:23
    Re: #50
Wasn't it that people started calling these games "Castlevania-like," then someone pushed back with "no wait, Metroid was the real pioneer of exploration-based side-scrollers," and that's how "Metroidvania" came about? That's why there are surprisingly few games that are actually "Metroid-like."

Either way, it's not like the name is meant to mock the genre the way people claim "JRPG" does.
    63AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:26
    Re: #58
Originally it was a term coined specifically about Symphony of the Night.
    67AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:31
Metroid is the true originator of this genre,
but since most games directly homage the "vania" side of things, we ended up with this oddly-named genre label.
    68AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:33
    Re: #67
That's because Metroid itself is pretty light on RPG elements.
    70AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:35
    Re: #67
Yeah, there does seem to be more "vania"-style games out there (Timespinner is a blatant example), but Axiom Verge is definitely Metroid-style.
Also, Environmental Station Alpha is one of the rare ones that homages the original Metroid specifically.
    73AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:44
    Re: #67
    Huh?
There's basically no Metroidvania out there with actual level-grinding mechanics.
    71AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:35
Games should just be about whether they're fun or not.
Being this obsessed with genre-splitting sounds like some kind of sickness.
    72AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:41
    Re: #71
"Why it's fun" and "who it's fun for" differ from person to person and game to game,
and genre labels are useful as a rough sorting tool for that.

"As long as it's fun" doesn't help much if you hand someone a BL game that's a blast for yaoi-loving fujoshi but not for them.

    Background and Key Points

“Metroidvania” is a colloquial term for exploration-based side-scrolling action games, said to be a portmanteau of Nintendo’s “Metroid” and Konami’s “Castlevania” (particularly “Symphony of the Night”). It started out as fan-community slang, and only became an established genre name relatively recently. The thread floated the theory that it’s “a term foreigners coined to look down on Japanese games,” but this is just one persistent bit of folklore, and its truth has never been settled. In fact, several replies in the thread pushed back on that very theory, making the term’s origin itself a point of dispute. It was also pointed out that most games labeled “Metroidvania” actually lean toward Castlevania-style design, while games truly in the Metroid mold (exploration-focused, light on RPG elements) are a minority — highlighting a mismatch between the genre label and what it actually describes. What’s easy for readers to miss is that the term isn’t just “Metroid-like” — it’s a compound word pointing to the fusion of two distinct lineages.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “Geha”) thread “I put together a lineup of Metroidvania masterpieces, any objections?.”

  • “Wolverine’s ‘1.7 Million Copies’ Image Raises Eyebrows — 5chers: ‘Isn’t It Shrinking Every Day?’”

A thread went up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board after someone posted an image claiming a certain title had surpassed 1.7 million copies sold. Commenters quickly pointed out that the number in the image seemed to shrink a little with each repost, fueling suspicion it might be an AI-generated fake. The fact that no official sales figures have been announced even a week after launch is also being read as a telling silence. As is tradition, the thread spiraled into the usual Nintendo-vs-PlayStation fan slap-fight, with plenty of posts comparing the number to sales of past hit titles.

Back when JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle came out, plenty of people responded to "this isn't fun" with "it sold 500k copies!"
Just curious — did the people who said ASB was boring also happen to be part of those 500k buyers?

Classic pattern: about a year later they'll quietly slip out some embarrassingly low official figure

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Talk about real-world game sales figures comes up constantly on the Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, and numbers from images with no official backing often take on a life of their own — this time, too, some suspected the source image might be AI-generated. Hardware makers and publishers tend to eagerly announce round-number milestones and strong results, while sitting on unfavorable numbers until financial results are released — and the thread’s “read between the lines on the silence” reaction reflects that well-known industry pattern. Note that replies naming and criticizing specific X (formerly Twitter) accounts, or containing language disparaging individual posters, have been excluded from this article.

  • Pokémon Card 30th Anniversary: High-Rarity Pull Rates Too Generous, Resale Prices Crash — 5ch: “Crush These Damn Scalpers”

The Pokémon Card 30th-anniversary commemorative set “30th Celebration” saw a wave of bulk-buying and high-priced resale worldwide right after launch — but according to a report from Kotaku in the US, it turns out the pull rate for high-rarity cards was much higher than expected there, and prices are now crashing. The headline cards, “Mew ex” and “Mewtwo ex,” were fetching $850–$1,400 on eBay before release, with some hitting over $3,000 at the peak — but five days after launch they’d dropped to around $120, and anything priced above $100 is reportedly struggling to sell. On 5ch, reactions ranged from skepticism about the article’s premise (“isn’t this still way too profitable?”) to criticism of scalping itself, to speculation about the company’s own motives in controlling pull rates.

Yahoo! Original Article, 9/22 (Tue) 7:01

Last week, as soon as the Pokémon Card 30th-anniversary commemorative set “30th Celebration” went on sale, bulk-buying and high-priced resale broke out worldwide. But at least in the US, Kotaku reports that the pull rate for high-rarity cards turned out to be far higher than expected, crashing prices and leaving scalpers reeling.

In particular, “Mew ex (FUR)” and “Mewtwo ex (FUR)” reportedly sold on eBay for $850–$1,400 before release, with some examples fetching over $3,000 at the peak. But five days after launch, they were listed around $120, with anything above $100 said to be a tough sell.

What’s being reported as a “price crash” here is specifically the secondary-market price on eBay in the United States — a different market from Japan’s flea-market and buyback prices. The pushback in the thread (“they’re rolling in cash,” “prices are through the roof”) likely stems from that difference in country and market. The 30th Celebration is a commemorative pack loaded with newly designed high-rarity cards like Mew ex and Mewtwo ex, and it’s possible a higher-than-usual pull rate was intentional for this particular release. Since trading-card prices are fundamentally driven by “rarity × scarcity,” once it became clear the pull rate was higher than expected, the scalpers who’d bought up cards at inflated prices were the ones most exposed to losses. The thread’s discussion spread from criticism of scalping itself to speculation about the motives of both the company and the buyers driving that criticism.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Express+) thread “[Pokémon Cards] Pokémon Card 30th Anniversary — Scalpers Who Bought Up Stock Left Reeling as High-Rarity Cards Prove Easier to Pull Than Expected, Crashing Prices.”

  • PS6 “Would Dominate If Under ¥100,000”? 5ch Pushes Back: “Maybe Stop Dreaming?”

In response to the thread starter’s prediction that “if the PS6 launches under ¥100,000, PlayStation will become the undisputed dominant console,” skeptical voices piled up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. Posters repeatedly pointed out that the current PS5 Digital Edition (¥55,000) is already losing out to the Switch 2 in sales, with many arguing that price alone won’t turn that around. On the other hand, some took the view that a AAA-scale title like GTA6, if it delivers high performance and visuals, could sell globally even around ¥150,000. As the discussion went on, it shifted away from price itself and toward the substance of the software lineup.

    Re: #108
    Isn't 'it'll cost ¥200,000' also just a fantasy?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

As of September 2026, Sony has made no official announcement about the PS6, so its specs and price remain unconfirmed. The figures floating around the thread — ¥99,800, ¥198,000, ¥298,000, and so on — are all guesses from 5ch users, not information released by Sony. The debate split into two camps: those who believe “if the hardware is powerful enough, it’ll sell” versus those invoking “the lesson of PS4 to PS5,” with the latter pointing out there’s no precedent for a numbered successor becoming dominant on specs alone. Underlying this is the shared perception that the ¥55,000 PS5 (Digital Edition) is already struggling against the Switch 2 in sales, which fuels the pessimistic view that “even under ¥100,000, it’ll be tough.” On the other hand, some optimists argue that a AAA blockbuster on the scale of GTA6 could sell well even at a high price if the hardware performance backs it up. In the end, the argument converged less on price itself and more on the point that it all comes down to the software lineup.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, aka “Geha”) thread “If the PS6 comes out under ¥100,000, it’ll instantly become the undisputed king of consoles.”

  • Debate erupts on 5ch over how to lower blood pressure — “Seriously, just go see a doctor”

On a 5ch message board, users traded tips on “how do you actually lower your blood pressure?” In Japan, a reading above 140 systolic / 90 diastolic is generally the benchmark for recommending a doctor’s visit, and the thread ranged widely — from concrete fixes like cutting salt, exercising, and taking blood pressure medication, to the view that rising blood pressure with age is a natural process not worth obsessing over. Opinions split, though, on whether blood pressure that’s gone up can truly come back down, and on what counts as a healthy target for elderly people — and in the end, the recurring refrain was “don’t trust amateur judgment, talk to an actual doctor.”

It's fine for young people to sit around 120 over 80, but isn't it weird to apply the same standard once you're old? Blood vessels stiffen with age, so staying the same just isn't realistic (obviously actual extreme values are still bad).
I've also heard that elderly people with low blood pressure often can't walk properly and decline mentally faster, while running a bit higher keeps them active and sharper.
Both for the country and for families with elderly relatives, dying suddenly while still active ("pin-pin korori" — living healthy right up until a quick death) beats years bedridden.

That's like saying "I got anesthesia and now nothing hurts."

Background and key points of this discussion

Japan’s diagnostic benchmark for high blood pressure is a reading of 140 systolic over 90 diastolic, and going past it typically prompts a recommendation to see a doctor. In the thread, opinions split between lifestyle fixes — cutting salt, eating potassium-rich foods, doing cardio — and treating it mainly with blood pressure medication. Notably, claims that elevated blood pressure never truly returns to normal were met with pushback pointing out that losing weight reduces the volume of blood that needs pumping and therefore lowers the pressure required — anecdotes with no real expert backing sitting side by side. There was also debate over whether the same standard should apply to the elderly, given that hardening blood vessels naturally push blood pressure up with age, with some arguing the real goal should be overall health rather than just chasing a lower number. A few posters in the thread claimed to be nurses or registered dietitians, but these are all anonymous, self-reported claims — any actual treatment plan needs to be based on an actual doctor’s diagnosis.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from a 5ch “Hardware/Industry” board (nicknamed “Geha,” a board known for console-war-style threads) thread: “So, how do you actually lower your blood pressure?“

  • MS Reorganizes Xbox Studios — 5ch: “It Literally Says ‘Layoffs’ Right There”

A thread on 5ch’s “Hardware & Industry” (gaming hardware war board, aka “Geha”) kicked off with a post calling it “bad news” for Xbox. Reading further, though, it turns out the news is that Microsoft is reorganizing its Xbox game studios — and with Bungie stating it will “keep Destiny going” and ongoing collaborations with Kojima Productions and FromSoftware, plenty of posters argued it isn’t necessarily bad news at all. On the other hand, the announcement did actually contain the word “layoffs,” so the thread was split between reading the reorganization as good news and reading it as a grim report of job cuts.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Microsoft’s gaming division, which includes Xbox, has gone through repeated studio reorganizations and layoffs ever since its 2023 acquisition of Activision Blizzard, and this thread looks like part of that ongoing pattern. The thread kicked off with a post framing it as “bad news” for Xbox, but reading further reveals a more mixed picture: Bungie announced it will keep Destiny going, and collaborations with Kojima Productions and FromSoftware remain active — hardly all doom and gloom. On the other hand, as seen in the exchange at posts 112 and 116, the announcement itself did actually include the word “layoffs,” so opinions in the thread split over whether to read the reorganization as a positive move or primarily as job cuts. The specific figure of 3,200 people was cited by posters within the thread itself; nothing in the thread verifies it against an official announcement, so it should be treated as a claim made by a participant at the time of posting rather than confirmed fact.

  • Xbox Enters Second Wave of Mass Layoffs — Halo Studio and Other Studios Merged or Absorbed — 5ch: ‘Phil Was Too Nice’

According to U.S. media reports, Microsoft is planning further layoffs and studio consolidation within its Xbox division. Halo Studio, Rare, and World’s Edge are reportedly being moved under Activision Blizzard, while Ninja Theory faces closure after a sale deal fell through, and Turn 10 is said to be merging with Playground Games. Obsidian is also being moved under Bethesda, though its ongoing projects will reportedly continue. On 5ch, some criticized the move, saying “don’t call plain layoffs a ‘reform,’” while others took a calmer view of the studio reorganizations.

According to multiple reports, Xbox is planning another round of layoffs and studio mergers, as previewed today.

Per a rumor from NateTheHate, Xbox is reportedly moving Halo under Activision Blizzard.

Going forward, studios that can't deliver results won't last long, and new IPs probably won't get greenlit easily either.

If Sledgehammer takes over Halo, they'll pull through somehow.

    Background and Key Points

Microsoft has carried out multiple rounds of layoffs in its Xbox division since acquiring Activision Blizzard for roughly $69 billion in 2023. Internal documents disclosed during the FTC litigation reportedly indicated a plan to end annual Call of Duty releases starting in 2027. Halo Studio is the renamed successor to 343 Industries, the studio behind Halo Infinite, making this a turning point where it loses much of its independence. On the thread, many took the official framing of this reorganization as “reform” to be little more than an extension of plain staff cuts. Opinions also clashed over Obsidian’s situation — some argued fans would drift away now that it’s under Bethesda, while others pointed out that existing projects were explicitly stated to continue, with some misunderstandings arising from posters misreading the article.

  • Kojima’s Nintendo-Pitch Tweet Ignites Viral “Pony” Meme War

A post on X (formerly Twitter) claiming that Hideo Kojima approached Nintendo about funding and technical cooperation on motion-capture and face-mapping technology for a new cross-media IP — supposedly met with Nintendo replying “What’s motion capture?” — became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. Even though Nintendo has no actual stake in the matter, the fact that its name got dragged into the post sparked debate in the thread over “why Nintendo always gets brought up.” Discussion also spread to the origin of “Pony,” a derogatory nickname used overseas for PlayStation loyalists.

    Pony: “

Kojima’s pitch to Nintendo: ‘Are you interested in my new cross-media IP? I’ll need financial backing, plus technical support for motion capture and face-mapping.’

    "I love video games!"

Background and key points of this discussion

On overseas forums and social media, “Pony” is used as a derogatory term to mock PlayStation loyalists, much like “Goki” (roach) is used in Japan — without knowing this context, the exchange at the center of this story is hard to make sense of. It started from a post claiming Hideo Kojima approached Nintendo for funding and motion-capture technology support for a new cross-media IP, built around a joke that framed Nintendo’s reply as curt and clueless. In the thread, opinions split over why Nintendo — which has nothing to do with the matter — got dragged into it, with some offering the analysis that Nintendo, being tied to its own hardware, makes an easy target since it rarely pushes back, while others saw it as simply an extension of long-standing rivalry. Note that the original post was made on X (formerly Twitter), and the material behind this article does not confirm whether a Community Note has verified its accuracy.

  • New FE Divides Fans: ‘Easy Early Game’ vs. ‘Brutal Part 3’ Theories Clash

The difficulty of the new Fire Emblem game sparked debate on 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board. While Parts 1 and 2 are described as “a breeze even without exploring,” Part 3’s difficulty shifts dramatically depending on the allies and character growth built up during Parts 1 and 2 — leading some to speculate that “maybe not many people have actually made it that far.” Discussion also touched on the gap between major outlets like IGN scoring the game in the 60s while its Metacritic user score sits in the 9s, along with the reliability of Amazon reviews.

In Part 3, the difficulty depends on how much effort you put in during Parts 1 and 2.
For example, in Part 3 you split the allies you recruited across Parts 1 and 2 (four story routes' worth) into separate squads and push forward on two or three fronts at once.
    Otherwise you can't win.

Even Gunshi Minoru (a well-known gaming YouTuber) gave it his lowest score ever, and no other major reviewer rated it highly to balance that out.
    Doesn't look good.

Minoru actually rated it highly as a game, though.

    Background and Key Points

The spread in review scores for the new Fire Emblem largely comes down to the series’ structure. Parts 1 and 2 are designed to be easy, while Part 3 is built so that the growth and branching choices accumulated up to that point directly determine its difficulty — meaning reviewers who only played the early parts and those who pushed through to Part 3 are likely to rate it very differently. It’s also common to see a gap between scores from major Western outlets like IGN and the Metacritic user score or Amazon reviews, and neither side is necessarily “correct.” Note that the original thread also contained several unsubstantiated posts tying review reliability to manipulation by firms of a specific nationality; those claims lack any supporting evidence and have been excluded from this article.

  • Forza Horizon 6’s Japanese Steam Reviews Turn ‘Mixed’ Amid Backlash Over Itasha Bans

The popular Xbox racing game ‘Forza Horizon 6’ has become a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry (“geha”) board after its Japanese-language Steam reviews dropped to a ‘Mixed’ rating. While the overall review score across all languages remains ‘Very Positive’ out of 87,230 reviews, the 3,802 most recent Japanese-language reviews have fallen to ‘Mixed.’ Players pointed to the developer’s habit of banning “itasha” (custom cars covered in anime/game character graphics) paint jobs one after another — even ones that were never shared publicly or still works in progress — as well as complaints about the matchmaking playlists. Meanwhile, the thread was also awash with thin, unsubstantiated speculation about harassment targeting a specific country or sabotage by Sony.

What are we gonna do about this…
    3AnonymousSep 22, 2026 12:45
Looks like Japan ended up with the lowest reviews after all 😭
    4AnonymousSep 22, 2026 12:46
Good thing they didn't release it on PS5 (´・ω・`)
    5AnonymousSep 22, 2026 12:46
Why is it only Japan that's 'Mixed' while everywhere else is 'Very Positive'?
I haven't even played it so I don't get it, someone explain.

    Complaints about the playlists
    And the itasha ban frenzy
    6AnonymousSep 22, 2026 12:47
    Total reviews across all languages:
    87,230
    (Very Positive)

    Recent reviews in Japanese:
    3,802
    (Mixed)

Guess the weirdos are kicking up a fuss again lol

    Re: #7
Itasha, huh… guess getting banned for that is kind of understandable.
    36AnonymousSep 22, 2026 13:53
    Re: #9
No, they're banning stuff that isn't even shared — unfinished, half-made designs too.
    The devs are absolute garbage.
    19AnonymousSep 22, 2026 12:54
This is a series that got attention BECAUSE of itasha, come on!!
    20AnonymousSep 22, 2026 12:55
When it comes to itasha in games, it just comes down to the manufacturer saying 'no doodling on our cars,' end of story.
In real life the car belongs to the owner, but in-game it's Microsoft's data under license from the manufacturer.
If the license doesn't get approved, that's a problem for them.
    22AnonymousSep 22, 2026 12:58
    Re: #20
But they used to say it was fine because it's just a bunch of symbols?

The devs are just mechanically banning stuff without actually doing their jobs.
    21AnonymousSep 22, 2026 12:57
There's a crowd that cares more about itasha than racing, and another crowd that shoves teammates off the track in co-op.
The playerbase's manners are pretty bad.
And on top of that the devs are a mess too — I think anyone giving this game a thumbs up is at least partly just being nice.
    25AnonymousSep 22, 2026 13:10
    It was fun, but
isn't there any more map or DLC content coming?
    26AnonymousSep 22, 2026 13:15
    Re: #25
Apparently the first one's coming before year's end — usually they drop two, that's the pattern.
    62AnonymousSep 22, 2026 15:39
I saw someone say they got banned just for having another player's itasha show up in a photo — is that actually true?
    71AnonymousSep 22, 2026 15:46
    Re: #62
Just taking the photo seems to be fine.
Saving or sharing it is apparently what gets you banned.
    64AnonymousSep 22, 2026 15:40
I've been playing this pretty much every day and honestly I don't really get why it's 'Mixed.'
Reading the replies, is this about some country griping over custom itasha designs and the Rising Sun flag or whatever? It's a genuinely good game.
    67AnonymousSep 22, 2026 15:42
    Re: #64
FE and FH6 are genuinely fun games,
but negative news keeps spreading about them like crazy.
    It's really strange.

That's assuming Sony isn't behind some kind of interference, though.
    69AnonymousSep 22, 2026 15:44
    Re: #64
Aside from that, the score was already dropping from complaints about the playlists too.
    70AnonymousSep 22, 2026 15:45
FH6 originally had a PS5 release planned too,
so after launch it didn't get smeared with negative campaigns at all.

But then the whole Kojima Productions departure incident broke out,
and suddenly negative news about it started spreading all at once.
    72AnonymousSep 22, 2026 15:48
    Re: #70
    Seriously? lol, Kojima's the worst.
    83AnonymousSep 22, 2026 16:03
My guess for why the Xbox version isn't getting hit as hard
is that your Xbox account gives you away, and people can't just prepare thousands of Xbox accounts and consoles.

With the Steam version, one single PC can be used to file thousands of reports.

You'd think the reports should really be piling up
on the Xbox version instead, since it has way more players.
    85AnonymousSep 22, 2026 16:05
    Re: #83
Hey buddy who hasn't even played it, this game has cross-play.
    93AnonymousSep 22, 2026 16:39
    Well, it's simple.

    Anything that exists on Xbox
    but not on PlayStation
is absolutely going to become a target for smear campaigns.

That's all there is to it.
    94AnonymousSep 22, 2026 16:42
    Re: #93
    Quit flip-flopping.

    Background and Key Points

Steam’s review ratings are tallied separately for “all-time, all languages” and “recent reviews by language,” and it’s this distinction that sparked the discussion this time. Overall, the game maintains a “Very Positive” rating across 87,230 reviews, but the 3,802 most recent reviews from Japanese-language users alone have sunk to “Mixed.” The itasha bans raised in the thread are widely believed to stem from the developer mechanically removing paint jobs modeled on real cars because they exceed the scope of the automakers’ licensing agreements, though no official explanation has been given. Posts alleging sabotage by Sony or harassment targeting a specific nationality also appeared, but these remain unconfirmed speculation with no evidence behind them.
